Výskyt sebevražd u alkoholiků / The Incidence of Suicide Among Alcoholics

LHOTSKÁ, Veronika January 2014 (has links)
For my master thesis, I have chosen the topic of alcoholics' suicide occurrence. There were 1647 people who have committed a suicide in the Czech Republic during the year 2012. Out of the 1647 people, there were 1370 men, and 277 women (ČSÚ, 2013). The deaths of alcoholics are not recorded by the National Evidence Center. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The information for the theoretical part was gathered from academic sources. The two examined parts are the suicide commitment in the Czech Republic, and the alcohol consumption. The practical part is simply a primary research that I have done in PL Červený Dvůr. The research had two parts; quantitative and qualitative. The qualitative part was done through interviews with chosen respondents. The quantitative part was done through surveys distributed in PL Červený Dvůr. I have chosen to do the quantitative part first, so that I could choose the right candidates for the quantitative part based on their responses. The interviews helped me to complete the information I was looking for. I have set various goals that I wanted to reach through the research. The main goal was to chart the suicide behavior of alcoholics who are patients of PL Červený Dvůr. In order to reach such goal, I have set partial goals. The first partial goal was to contras the reason that lead the patients of PL Červený Dvůr to try to commit a suicide. According to the results I received, the most common reason for committing a suicide is either unfulfilled love, or the breaking-up with partner. Another goal was to discover the way the patients tried to kill themselves. As the majority responded so, the most common way is to cut the veins while drunk. The third goal was to compare and contrast the different reasons why as well as the ways how to commit a suicide. I have focused on two groups of patients of PL Červený Dvůr; the alcoholics and the toxicants. The alcoholics had proven that the reason why the tried to kill themselves was love, but the toxicants stated that they did it because they simply did not have a reason to live anymore. Both of the groups decided to end their lives by cutting their veins.

Background: First institution specialized in treatment of alcohol was opened by Bedrich Konarik-Becvan in 1911 in Velke Kuncice. This hospital was closed in 1915 and therefore there was the necessity of creation of the new medical institution. The czechoslovak abstinent association along with Bedrich Konarik found suitable premises and then in 1923 the second anti-alcoholic institution in Tuchlov was opend. Aims: The aim of this thesis is to map the existence (commencement and the expiry) of Abstinential pension Chateau Tuchlov. Use historical documents to describe the composition of the patients, their succesful/unsuccesful treatment attempts, and which therapeutical procedures were used. Methods: The content quality analysis of historical documents, which have not been yet completed has been used for the data collection. The key information are archive sheets from the National Museu archive, so like periodical magazines "Vyssi narod" and "Zdravy lid". Results: Since 1908, when Bedrich Konarik - Becvan began publishing about the alcohol addiction, he pointe dout the necessity of creating the new facilities focused on the treatment of this addictive substance. After the closure of Velke Kuncice medical center, he grabbed the possibility of creating of the new medical institution, and so react to...

Ethanol administration dampens the prolactin response to psychosocial stress exposure in sons of alcohol-dependent fathers

Zimmermann, Ulrich S., Buchmann, Arlette F., Spring, Constance, Uhr, Manfred, Holsboer, Florian, Wittchen, Hans-Ulrich January 2009 (has links)
Genetic predisposition and exposure to alcohol and stress increase the risk for alcoholism, possibly by forming a threefold interaction. This is suggested by various aspects of alcohol-induced stress response dampening in offspring of alcoholics. We tested whether such an interaction is also revealed by prolactin secretion, which is predominantly controlled by hypothalamic dopamine. Plasma prolactin was measured during four experimental days in 26 young males with a paternal history of alcoholism (PHA) and in 22 family history negative (FHN) controls. A public speaking stress paradigm was applied on the first 2 days, and a non-stress acoustic startle experiment on the others. Before the tests, subjects drank alcohol (0.6 g/kg) or placebo in a randomized, double-blind crossover design. During placebo experiments, prolactin levels significantly increased after stress, but not after startle, and did not differ between risk groups. Alcohol administration significantly increased prolactin before stress and during startle in both groups, did not alter stress-induced prolactin stimulation in FHN, but significantly attenuated the prolactin stress response in PHA subjects. The alcohol effects on prolactin, cortisol, and adrenocorticotropin stress response were positively interrelated with each other. These data confirm that alcohol specifically dampens the stress response in PHA but not FHN subjects. Since prolactin responses to stress alone and alcohol alone were normal in PHA, we conclude that this genetic effect is not related to altered physiology of the hypothalamic dopaminergic system, but to risk-group specific alcohol effects on hierarchically higher brain areas controlling the stress response in general.
