Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Peru: A Twelve-Year Experience and Its connections to “LA REFERENCIA”, a Latin American RepositoryHuaroto, Libio, Recavarren, Isabel 18 November 2015 (has links)
In June 2004, University of San Marcos (UNMSM, Lima, Peru) launched the first portal providing access to electronic theses and dissertations in Peru using the Cybertesis platform. This initiative marked the beginning of open access theses repositories in the country. It was followed by other higher education and research institutions, both public and private. Four years later, the Peruvian Network for Digital Theses was established. It was officially closed in December 2014. In June 2010, Red CLARA launched LA REFERENCIA, a project funded by Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID). Eight regional countries were part of this initiative: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. El Salvador joined it recently. The aim of the project was to design a strategy for and an agreed framework on interoperability and scientific production management for Latin America. As of today, country members have developed national networks, each with its respective national repository portal. Repositories contain three (3) basic types of collections: master’s theses and doctoral dissertations; journal articles; and research projects. Participant institutions in LA REFERFENCIA are SNRD (Argentina), IBICT (Brazil), RRAAE (Ecuador), COLCIENCIAS, MEN, RENATA (Colombia), CONICYT, (Chile), CBUES (El Salvador), CONACYT, CUDI (México), RENARE (Peru), and CENIT, REACCIUN (Venezuela). Two events furthering open access to scientific research have been of key importance in Peru in the last two years; the first being the enacting of statute 30035 and its Regulations, by which the National Repository for Open Access Science and Technology was created. According to this legislation, all projects funded with public money will be openly accessible. The second event was the implementation of ALICIA (http://alicia.concytec.gob.pe), the aforementioned National Repository for Open Access Science and Technology. ALICIA is made up of 33 repositories – 13 of them are theses and dissertation repositories; 20 are institutional ones. ALICIA contains 34,567 registration records: 9,297 of them correspond to master’s theses, and 1,906 to doctoral dissertations (ALICIA has an additional 25,270 professional theses submitted by students after completing their undergraduate studies in order to obtain a professional license granted by the Peruvian state). LA REFERENCIA offers access to 88,599 doctoral dissertations and 202,798 master’s theses. Peruvian repositories for electronic theses and dissertations use DSpace, and have adopted the DRIVE 2.0 norms. Some institutions, like Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) have implemented Altmetrics indicators, showing social network activities connected to contents in theses, dissertations and journal articles.

Open access och spridning : En kvantitativ analys av hur open access-publicerade artiklar citeras och sprids på webben / Open access and proliferation : a quantitative study of how open access published articles are cited and distributed onlineGranholm, Kris January 2013 (has links)
To publish research articles by the means of open access is to provide them for free to the reader. An increasing number of universities around the world have begun to institute open access policies regarding their researchers academic output, requiring them to primarily publish in open access journals and / or archive their pre- or post- prints in institutional archives. The aim of this this thesis is to explore how the adoption of the open access policy at the Swedish Universi- ty of Agricultural Sciences in 2008 has affected how their researchers publish and if this has had any effect on how their academic output are cited and distributed online. To reach this goal a combination of bibliometric and altmetric methods were used as well as cross-referencing between Scopus, Altmetric.com, Google Scholar and the SHERPA/RoMEO database. The results points towards a mostly open access positive trend with an increase in articles published in jour- nals that allow archiving of both pre- and post-prints. There also seems to be a correlation between these journals and which kind of articles gets the most mentions in social media.

Altmetri : ett delfält i utveckling / Altmetrics : a Subfield in DevelopmentAhmetspahic, Narcisa January 2014 (has links)
Altmetrics, a subfield of informetrics, is still in development. The aim of this thesis is to explore; the significance altmetrics may have in the LIS field, and to define the new perspectives altmetrics offer in comparison to traditional metrics. The research questions are:- How can altmetrics affect research assessment?- How does altmetrics position itself towards traditional metrics?- How could altmetrics influence the LIS field?A qualitative content analysis was used as a method. The analysis of a sample of ten peer reviewed articles was based on a coding scheme with eleven codes. The sample was selected using Web of Science, Scopus, the Altmetrics Bibliography and chain search model. Kuhns paradigm concept was used as a theoretic framework together with the concepts Technologies of control (traditional metrics) and Technologies of narcissism (altmetrics) developed by Wouters and Costas. The results show a beginning of a paradigm shift in the research assessment field. Technologies of control with traditional metrics as measure of quality co-exist with the Technologies of narcissim using altmetrics for measuring a researchers impact on society. Altmetrics can be regarded as a complement to traditional metrics capable of evaluating research in four new perspectives: To evaluate the whole readership Potentially benefiting narrower fields Evaluation in realtime Evaluation of research productsThe significance altmetrics may have for the LIS field is to be used as an instrument for information mediation. / Program: Bibliotekarie

You Can View the Tweets!: Content Analysis of Tweets Mentioning Works in an Institutional RepositoryLowery, Ashley 21 April 2017 (has links)
Academic libraries provide resources scholars can use to measure their scholarly output, including altmetrics products. Altmetrics recently emerged to accommodate the sharing and dissemination of scholarship on the social web. The scholarly community is grappling with understanding and utilizing altmetrics tracked by these products. This study uses altmetrics provided by Plum Analytics products to analyze the content of tweets mentioning works from a Digital Commons institutional repository. Plum Analytics provides quantitative (number of tweets and retweets) and qualitative (content of the tweets) data from Twitter. In this study qualitative data is collected and coded to determine the tone of the tweets (negative, neutral, or positive) and other information including the tweet’s author, the intended audience, and hashtags. Results from the study will help better understand the meaning behind Twitter data and consequently guide scholars on effectively using tweets as scholarship measures.

Defining the Research-Practice Gap in PediatricsJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: There is a gap between today's scientific advances and their application--between what is known and what is actually being done. This gap occurs because of the process of knowledge translation required to digest research findings for policymakers and practitioners. Studies have repeatedly shown that because of this "know-do" gap, approximately one-half of patients in the United States and Europe are not receiving care according to the most recent scientific evidence. Children are a medically unique and underserved population that stands to be most affected by this gap. Therefore, in this study, the research-practice gap in the pediatric field was calculated and discussed in the context of knowledge brokers, who facilitate opportunities for knowledge translation. Article mentions from the journal Pediatrics were identified in policy documents and analyzed for the years 2010, 2013, and 2016 with the use of the Altmetric platform as a quantitative means of identifying patterns and drawing conclusions about the knowledge translation gap in pediatrics. Altmetric is a bibliometric tool that offers viable insights into the types of impact not covered with traditional methods of citation analysis. The expert policymaking bodies that cited the Pediatrics articles in their policy documents were coded, categorized, and subcategorized to clarify how and where Pediatrics research is ultimately being used to create health policy and to discover whether the gap is similar or different between the various types of policymaking organizations. This allowed the quantitative findings to be nested within a qualitative context. It took a mean of 7.1 years for research to reach the point of policy uptake for practitioners, with a range of 0-32.8 years. There were more international policy mentions than U.S. mentions, but information made its way through the knowledge translation process more quickly in the United States than it did elsewhere. In fact, nearly 40% of articles were cited in policy fewer than five years after original publication. The gap in pediatrics is thus significantly shorter than the 17-year average reported in the literature. However, knowledge brokerage activities performed by technical communicators are continually needed to build links between research, policy applications, and practice. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Technical Communication 2018

Analysis of Tweets Mentioning Scholarly Works from an Institutional RepositorySergiadis, Ashley D.R. 30 June 2018 (has links)
Altmetrics derived from Twitter have potential benefits for institutional repository (IR) stakeholders (faculty, students, administrators, and academic libraries) when metrics aggregators (Altmetric, Plum Analytics) are integrated with IRs. There is limited research on tweets mentioning works in IRs and how the results impact IR stakeholders, specifically libraries. In order to address this gap in the literature, the author conducted a content analysis of tweets tracked by a metrics aggregator (Plum X Metrics) in a Digital Commons IR. The study found that the majority of tweets were neutral in attitude, intended for a general audience, included no hashtags, and were written by users unaffiliated with the works. The results are similar to findings from other studies, including low numbers of tweeted works, high numbers of tweets neutral in attitude, and evidence of self-tweets. The discussion addresses these results in relation to the value of tweets and suggested improvements to Twitter metrics based on IR stakeholders’ needs.
