The Role of Richard Savage in Composing Pope's Dunciad

Wilmoth, Traci Carol 07 May 2007 (has links)
Murderer, bastard, spy: Richard Savage was no stranger to scandal and controversy. And yet, for a man who lived such a varied life, little is known for certain about him. There are rumors, suggestions, and accusations, but little that can be said without debates and arguments. It certainly does not help that Savage is often marginalized in eighteenth-century scholarship as scholars seek to discover and analyze all they can about his more famous, and more upstanding, contemporaries. While Savage's relationship with Johnson is well known and discussed frequently, all that is known of his relationship with Pope is that he contributed information to Pope's Dunciad Variorum (1729) and that Pope later contributed large sums to Savage's support. Pope was the driving force behind Savage's retirement to Wales, possibly alluded to in Johnson's London (1738), as well as the chief financial contributor to this retirement plan. No serious effort has been made to connect these two important episodes in Savage's life, perhaps because no serious effort has been made to establish the extent of his involvement with the Dunciad. It may have been this connection with Pope that drew Johnson to Savage in the first place. The intent of this thesis is to clarify the nature of Savage's collaborations with Pope and the extent of his contributions to the Dunciad Variorum of 1729. The Dunciad seeks to make fun not only of Pope's critics, but of writers who write for bread, the "hack writers" of Grub Street. It was here that Pope would most likely turn to Savage for information; Savage was much better acquainted with those writers than was Pope. But Savage may have done more than simply supply Pope with gossip, and I will consider the possibility that he had a more active role in the publication of the Dunciad Variorum. / Master of Arts

How is a Woman Like a Watermelon?: Advocating a Psychological and Comparative Examination of Brautigan's Novels

Plummer, Sarah E. 08 June 2010 (has links)
"How is a Woman Like a Watermelon" examines two of Richard Brautigan's novels, In Watermelon Sugar and An Unfortunate Woman, as they relate to each other in ways that offer a better understanding of each. This paper enriches an understanding of Brautigan's work by exploring the historical context of his writings, studying his style and presenting diverse interpretations in a mutually inclusive way that complements the multifaceted qualities of his writing. By studying Brautigan's novels in a comparative manner, the essential and distinctive principles that drive Brautigan's work—his manipulation of genre, use of memory and a complex first person narrator as an author persona—are better understood. Because of Brautigan's use of the first person, this study advocates an analytical psychological analysis aimed at discerning underlying emotion within apparent personal detachment, the use of projection as a defense mechanism, and the psychological associative value of words, images and memories. An inclusive and comparative study that foregrounds these psychological elements will ultimately allow for a more complete and subtle analysis of Brautigan's work. / Master of Arts

An Analysis of the Suruí Forest Carbon Project in Context of Settler Colonialism

Howard, Faith Elizabeth 25 May 2023 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the Suruí Forest Carbon Project in the context of settler colonialism. By exploring the three core principles of settler colonialism as outlined by settler colonial scholar Patrick Wolfe: access to land, elimination of the native, and the understanding that settler colonialism is a structure and not an event, I will demonstrate how each one of the three principles helped contribute to creating the context within which the Suruí Forest Carbon Project was situated. By taking this approach, I will be able to demonstrate the limits and possibilities of the project for the Suruí indigenous peoples. This analysis will allow me to present the challenges and contradictions associated with implementing REDD+ carbon credit projects in settler states such as Brazil and how, due to settler colonialism's structural limitations, these types of projects could be a possibility of providing some agency for indigenous peoples trying to find ways to assert their autonomy. The Suruí Forest Carbon Project was the first and still one of the only examples of an indigenous-led carbon emissions reduction project operating through the sale of carbon credits. During the first five years the project was operational, it drastically helped reduce deforestation levels within the Suruí's territory, leading many to deem the project a success. However, in 2015 and 2016, following the discovery of gold and diamonds on the Suruí's territory, the project's sight was eventually overrun by garimpeiros (small-scale gold miners), and in 2018 the project was suspended, leading some to consider it a failure. Therefore, I will present some of the challenges that arise when neoliberal conservation efforts, such as carbon credit projects, struggle to address factors outside their initial control, in this case, settler colonialism. Also, by analyzing the different components going into the project's creation, implementation, and suspension, I will present how carbon credit projects working directly with indigenous peoples can successfully halt deforestation for limited periods. But how settler colonialism makes these groups of people and their land vulnerable, which can help contribute to projects being undermined. Through my analysis, I will help demonstrate some factors that impact these types of projects' longevity and some things that would need to be implemented in the future to succeed in the long term. / Master of Arts / This thesis analyzes the Suruí Forest Carbon Project in the context of settler colonialism. My understanding of settler colonialism comes from settler colonial scholar Patrick Wolfe who believes that this specific type of colonialism has three core principles that help distinguish it from other colonial types and explain why anti-indigenous logics can continue. The three principles are access to land, the elimination of the native, and the understanding that settler colonialism is a structure and not an event. These three principles will serve as the core framework for my analysis. The Suruí Forest Carbon Project was the world's first indigenous-led carbon emissions reduction project operated by the indigenous peoples selling REDD+ carbon credits to buyers in order to achieve finances. The project occurred on the Suruí people's territory within the Sete de Setembro Indigenous Land, comprising a 250,000-ha site in the Amazon's "arc of deforestation" bordering the Brazilian states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso. The project was implemented on June 9, 2009, and in 2012 received its validation to sell carbon credits under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Between 2009 and 2014, the project drastically helped limit the deforestation occurring within the project's site, causing many to deem it a success. However, trouble began in 2015 and 2016 following the discovery of gold and diamonds on the Suruí's territory. Shortly after this discovery, the territory began to be infiltrated by garimpeiros (small-scale gold miners), which led to increased levels of deforestation on the project's site. In 2018, the project could no longer meet the standards it needed to maintain to sell the credits and was suspended indefinitely. Therefore, based on my understanding of settler colonialism's three core principles, I will analyze the limits and possibilities of the project for the Suruí indigenous peoples to present how all three principles played a hand in creating the conditions within which the Suruí Forest Carbon Project was situated and how that impacted the indigenous peoples involved in the project ability to have agency over their forests.

Development of an Omni-directional Gait Generator and a Stabilization Feedback Controller for Humanoid Robots

Song, Seungmoon 19 August 2010 (has links)
Bipedal locomotion in humanoid robots is a very challenging problem within the field of robot locomotion. In this thesis, we propose and demonstrate an omni-directional walking engine that achieves stable walking using feedback from an inertial measurement unit. Our walking engine generates gaits for which the zero moment point is on the center of the supporting foot. The mechanical structure of CHARLI-L, a humanoid robot used as our test platform in this thesis, is first introduced by describing the inverse kinematics of its legs. The principles of the omni-directional gait generator that creates walking motions and overcomes the robot's mechanical deficiencies is discussed. We develop and implement two kinds of feedback controllers; one is the gait feedback controller and the other is the joint feedback controller. Both feedback controllers use proportional-derivative of the angle of the pelvis from an inertial measurement unit. The results of the experiments are presented the efficacy of our proposed walking engine. / Master of Science

Nematode communities act as bio-indicator of status and processes of an agricultural soil ecosystem in Thanh An, Binh Phuoc province / Quần xã tuyến trùng giữ vai trò như chỉ thị sinh học của trạng thái và các quá trình của hệ sinh thái đất nông nghiệp ở Thanh An, tỉnh Bình Phước

Duong, Duc Hieu, Le, Thi Phuong Anh, Bui, Thi Thu Nga, Ngo, Xuan Quang, Nguyen, Dinh Tu, Nguyen, Huu Hung, Nguyen, Vu Thanh 09 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Nematode communities in black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) agricultural soil in Thanh An, Binh Phuoc province, were investigated. Soil samples were collected in February 2012 at 9 selected sites belonging to 3 pepper groves. The structure of nematode communities and critical ecological indices were determined to estimate environmental status. 26 genera were found. Of those, plant parasitic nematodes such as Meloidogyne, Helicotylenchus, Hoplolaimus, Psilenchus, and Tylenchidae always appear with high frequency and density, whereas the carnivorous nematodes were rarely detected. The nematode density correlates to the concentration of the total organic matter which correlates closely to the (Ba + Fu) proportion showed by the regression equation y = 0.0223x + 1.6819 with R2 = 1. The ecological triangle model, but not the maturity index (MI), apparently showed the status and processes (decomposition and mineralization) which may be happening in the soils of areas studied. The first grove is rich in nutrient but stressed by chemicals. The second grove is stable, with no chemical stress, but has low nutrient contents. The third grove is affected by chemicals but to a lesser extent than the first one.

Fridrichová, Alžběta January 2019 (has links)
1 Omissive offences Abstract This diploma thesis addresses the issue of omissive offences in the Czech criminal law with regard to the legislation of Germany. Given the little attention paid to this topic in the Czech Republic, the aim of this thesis is to provide the reader with a comprehensive view of the omission in Czech criminal law in the context of contemporary legal literature, case law, and relevant legislation, including critical review of the most controversial aspects of the current regulation. In the beginning, the thesis focuses on the characteristics of the offence and its individual features with an emphasis on the objective aspects of the offence, which is essential for determination of the form of action. This is followed by a detailed historical excursion into the antecedent legislation of omissions in our country, from the time of Austria- Hungary, to the unsuccessful efforts to reform the criminal law during the First Republic, followed by methodically elaborated criminal codes from the period of totalitarianism to the fine government draft of the Criminal Code from the turn of the millennium. The core of this thesis is the third chapter dealing with the valid regulation of omission and categorization of omissive offences to the authentic (genuine) and the inauthentic, while...
