Time management challenges of major refurbishment projects : An analysis of 20 hydropower outages at Fortum

Nyqvist, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
While most western hydropower sites are already developed or protected by legislation, the aging hydropower park requires refurbishment actions. Especially to tackle the challenges of an increased fluctuation at the grid coming from the expansion of other renewable energy sources such as wind power. The company Fortum is carrying out a number of major refurbishment projects every year and want to enhance their time performance during the outage. Delayed projects are resulting in unexpected costs and production losses. By investigating 20 historical refurbishment outages from a project manager perspective, the delays are related to different sections of the outage time. These sections are referred to as work packages, meaning a set of activities related to a functional part of the plant. The material is based on interviews and project documentation. The outages are divided into three groups depending on the amount of delay and some additional set of factors are used in a comparison. The results are discussed from a time management and a multi-project perspective. The study can be viewed as an initial study to address time management challenges in a company. The methodology proves to be an efficient way to get time management challenges at a company to the surface. The results displays late manufacturing deliveries and overruns of assembly and erection durations as the most common reasons of delay. A number of potential success/failure factors are suggested. It is also pointed out that small projects are at risk being more delayed compared to larger ones.

Management strategies and time use in food preparation in two-parent, two-child Utah families

Steggell, Carmen Dobson 19 February 1992 (has links)
The management of the home has been a central component of Home Economics since the early 1900s. It is, however, an enigmatic behavior that has not yielded easily to research. Recognizing that meal provision and food consumption by families incorporate management processes and occur on a regular and frequent basis, it was thought that it would be possible to focus on meal management as a step toward understanding resource management. Using time diary and questionnaire data collected in Utah as a part of Regional Research Project S-206, the objectives of this study were (1) to identify variables which may predict the management strategies and time expenditures of meal preparation in two-parent, two-child Utah families, and (2) to assess any changes in current meal patterns in two-parent, two-child families with those reported by Peterson (1979) in a comparable 1977 study. Guided by the Deacon and Firebaugh (1988) family systems perspective, stepwise multiple regression was used to identify predictor variables. It was found that homemaker's education was a statistically significant predictor of shopping frequency(+), frequency of use of a microwave oven(+), number of meals eaten together(+), and homemaker's time in food preparation and dishwashing (-). Seven additional variables, including urban/rural residence, homemaker's hours of employment, age of oldest child, age of youngest child, homemaker's age and a mean score on homemaker's self-reported management skills, were statistically significant predictors of selected management strategies and time expenditures in meal preparation. Decade comparisons revealed few changes of practical significance in meal patterns. The findings of the study were used to suggest hypotheses for further research in family resource management. / Graduation date: 1992

Využití času manažerů ve státní správě / Usage of manager´s time in public administration

LETOVSKÁ, Pavla January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis was to assess the use of manager´s time and to suggest changes that would lead to make their work more efficient. It focuses on managers working in the public sphere. Following offices were chosen to take part in the research: Revenue Authority for South Bohemian Region - Territorial Departement in České Budějovice and Regional Authority of South Bohemian Region. The main topic of this work is time management which is extremely important nowadays. Twenty managers were asked to take part in the research, ten from each office. Questionnaire survey was the basic tool used to collect information about their time management. They were also interviewed afterwards to specify some information from the questionnaires more deeply. It was discovered that most of the respondents have no experience with the time management in general. The lack of such experience brings many problems of course and the managers fight with the difficulties of time planning very often. On the basis of those facts, some changes were proposed, that could lead to more efficient work.

Conversation about goal setting and self-determination among grade 8 learners

Pullen, Adele 27 January 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / Through observing my grade eight learners I noticed that most of them found the transition from primary to high school difficult as they appeared to struggle to manage their time effectively towards completing and submitting quality class assignments. Houck is one of many researchers to present setting and attaining personal and academic goals as a positive coping method in high-stress situations. The purpose of this inquiry was to analyse and understand how grade eight learners' organize their conversation and what they converse about on their experiences in utilizing goal-setting strategies towards better time-management and self determination in completing a class assignment. This inquiry utilized an ethnomethodological Design whereby both Content Analysis and Conversation Analysis were my mode of analysis. Through the qualitative Content Analysis I was able to identify ten categories or themes that explained the experiences these grade eight learners had in utilizing goal-setting strategies towards better time management and self-determination in completing a class assignment. The Conversation Analysis of the video recorded conversation of a small group of six grade eight learners was analysed on four levels. On the experience of completing an assignment utilizing goal-setting strategies the inquiry found that, the participants demonstrated an understanding of the benefits of goal-setting (planning, prioritizing and meeting deadlines) within the school learning context. As expected, goal-setting has made a positive difference in the attitude of these participants towards themselves, their abilities and their school work. Additionally, through this conversation participant voices and perspectives were honored as they refined ideas and judged whether there was anything of merit offered by their fellow participants. It is recommended that teachers and therapists working with grade eight learners converse with learners within the classroom on how to approach their different learning areas' workload utilizing goal-setting strategies in order to achieve the learning outcomes successfully.
