This thesis is a collaboration with Framtidens läromedel, which is a research and product development project at Mälardalen University. Studies show that the mathematics skills of Swedish students are declining. The project aims to create a teaching material based on research that can help change the trend.   The project is developing several different parts. A book for students, a teacher's guide and a PowerPoint to use in the classroom. My task is to design the PowerPoint which aim to include interesting illustrations.   Research shows that students understand the content of a text better if they can look at a descriptive image. The “image” can be a movie, a picture in a book or a sketch drawn by the teacher on the board to help the students to understand.   The conclusion of this study is that a design should be attractive and that an image should be easy to read and to understand. This makes the recipients interested to the message being conveyed.   Studies show that in mathematics and mainly geometry, children relate geometric shapes to familiar objects. I have considered this in the creation of a descriptive image showing geometric shapes placed in an everyday context.

Urban nature center : The development of educational spaces and how they can interplay with nature in an urban context

Educational spaces that interact with nature can give children in the city a start in experiencing the nature close to them. First hand experiences have the potential to influence and inspire children to continue learning about the environment that they are a part of. The Urban Nature Center aims to bring the concept of Nature School into the urban setting of Tantolunden in Stockholm city in order to invite the public to experience the urban nature. It creates a link to further explore the nature areas surrounding the city. By developing educational spaces that interplay with nature, focus has been on the relationship between inside and outside and on creating different levels of openness. Providing spaces for teaching both in groups and individually. The interior spaces either focus inwards on the activity taking place or outwards towards the nearby environment by filtering the view between inside and outside. / Pedagogiska miljöer som interagerar med naturen kan ge barn en start till att börja utforska sin närmiljö. Förstahandsupplevelser i naturen har potential att påverka och inspirera barn att fortsätta lära sig om miljön som de är en del av. Centret syftar till att ta konceptet av Naturskolan till stadsmiljön i Tantolunden i Stockholm för att bjuda in allmänheten att uppleva den urbana naturen. Centret skapar en länk till utforskande av naturområden runt om staden. I utvecklingen av dessa läromiljöer har fokus legat på relationen mellan inne och ute samt på att skapa olika nivåer av öppenhet. De interiöra utrymmena fokuserar antingen inåt på aktiviteten som äger rum där eller utåt mot den närliggande miljön genom att filtrera utsikten mellan insidan och utsidan.

Translating serial relations aspects of the genetic grid in algorithmic design

The notion of seriality describes such relations where each element has a processor. It could be also understood as a condition of sequential translation and transfonnation. This thesis investi gates “seriality” in the relationship to architecture and landscape. I begin my investigation with a criticism of the conventional relationship between architecture and landscape. This relationship is often static and inert while it should be more dynamic and interactive within the design process. Reconsidering the relationship between “research” and “design,” my attempt to connect the two using algorithmic design was instrumental in formulating a new design process. In this thesis, a new design process has been developed and examined in three different sec tions: 1) “Theoretical Approach,” 2) “Technical Approach” and 3) “Case Study.” In the theoretical section, I investigate “rhythm,” which is an underlying series of movements affecting on architecture physically and fundamentally, in both architecture and landscape. In re sponse to this theory, I propose a method known as the “Genetic Grid” to manage grid flexibly by receiving its new identities from “natural conditions.” In the technical approach, I introduce methods in algorithmic design to manage grid flexibly. The basic method is called the ‘UVN generator’ which is based on the algorithmic process com bining the scripting potentiality and flexibility of traditional 3D surface modeling. This technique contributes to a method to generate the “Genetic Grid.” In the third section, I examine this “Genetic grid” more closely throughout a proposed design process called “Condition Linkage.” By embedding “Gene of Place” into architectural elements, I hope to show an underlying harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Intelligent intervention : toward a definition for the process of design in the architecture of design/build

The method of Design/Build is known for its practicality and skillful designers and builders. However, high quality buildings produced by this method suggest there is an intellectual wealth hidden beneath this technical practicality. To uncover this wealth, a definition for the processes of design used in this method must be constructed to clarify its intellectual aspects. Such a definition begins with the assumption that design is an intelligent process through which people arrange their environment. To uphold the intelligence of design, the interaction between human (designer, tradesperson, client, or inhabitants) and architecture must be maintained throughout the process. The unique conditions in the method of Design/build allow the human intellect to freely interpret and intervene in the processes of architecture. To fully exploit these conditions, a designer must develop a particular view, seeing architecture as combined processes rather than as an end-result. Via this view, it becomes evident that the arrangement of lines, forms, and structures of buildings is just a material manifestation of a deeper reality, i.e. the agreed values that an individual or society holds. These values are translated into two groups of design principles in architecture. The first group is geometrical and includes proportion, symmetry, order, and unity. The second group is relational and leads to consideration of adaptability, nature, need, tradition, and material. These principles define the relationships of architecture, humans, and the environment, expressing the role of intelligence in man-made settings. In Design/Build, these principles can be incorporated into the processes of design far more than in any other method, because architecture is intimately connected to environment (social and natural), and there is a dynamic interaction between designing and building. This method sees architecture as a combination of processes, considering design not as rules and regulations, but as a process that is empowered and motivated by the events of everyday life. This method arrives at the rules and regulation of architecture only after recognizing this fact. Without the attendance of life in an architectural process, the geometrical and relational principles of design are dull and meaningless. Friåkning, att jaga orörd pudersnö utanför skidområdets gränser, är en extremsport förknippad med många risker. Laviner är en av dem. Intresset för friåkning ökar ständigt vilket leder till fler som är exponerade för fara och stigande olyckssiffror. Lavinrisken beror på många faktorer; till exempel väder, terräng och väderstreck medan grupptryck och kommunikationssvårigheter påverkar skidåkarens beslutsfattande negativt. Mitt mål var att hjälpa skidåkaren förstå riskerna medan den åker skidor för att undvika lavinolyckor. Genom en enketundersökning och intervjuer med experter på området samt fokusgrupp har jag lokaliserat de största problemen vilka har blivit grundpelarna i mitt slutgiltiga koncept. Resultatet är Avoid. En tjänst som skickar notiser till skidåkaren, i realtid, om vilka risker den är utsatt för baserat på skidåkarens GPS-position, lavinprognosen och terrängdata. Genom påminnelser om planering och säkerhetsutrustning, ett adderat riskfilter på kartan, kommunikationshjälpmedel och riskinformation blir det lättare för skidåkaren att fatta kloka beslut och välja säkrare alternativ.

Tortoise : Hållbar design för Kinas möbelmarknad / Tortoise : Sustainable design for the Chinese furniture market

I Kina ökar konsumtionen i takt med välfärden och det finns ett behov av en mer hållbar attityd i landet, både för konsumenter och producenter. Det blir mer och mer viktigt för vår globala hälsa och miljö med hållbar design. I den här rapporten försöker jag förtydliga vad hållbarhet innebär genom att förhålla mig och mitt examensarbete till den kinesiska marknaden. Hur skulle en hållbar möbeldesign tänkas se ut för en kinesisk marknad? I mitt examensarbete fokuserar jag på våningssängen. Det är en möbel som är lite bortglömd formmässigt men som trots allt verkar sälja väldigt bra i Kina. Jag hoppas kunna hitta en mer stilren lösning som också är mer köns och åldersneutral än de våningssängar som finns idag. Mitt arbete börjar med att försöka skapa en generell förståelse för landet som helhet och att leta efter likheter och olikheter mellan våra kulturer som kan ha betydelse för min frågeställning. I min designprocess utgår jag från olika designstrategier som fungerar som en checklista för utvecklingen av min möbel. I en funktionsanal listar jag sedan önskade funktioner som alla har egenskaper att påverka en bättre global miljö eller mänskligt välbefinnande. Mitt slutgiltiga förslag, Tortoise, är en våningssäng ämnad för unga familjer i Kina. Den är i första hand tänkt att användas i barnkammaren för en familj med 1 till 2 barn eller för en familj som ofta får besök av mor och farföräldrar, men kan lika väl stå i ett kombinerat gästrum/kontor. Sängen kan vara en stabil och rolig klätterställning på dagen, en mysig soffa för en eller flera på kvällen och en mysig och fantastiskt skön säng på natten. Sängen ser kanske inte ut som en sköldpadda, Tortoise, men den har egenskaper som stämmer väl överens med sköldpaddans symbolik, som värnar om trygghet, stabilitet och ett lång liv.  Genom mitt examensarbete med sängen i fokus har jag lagt grunden för en framtida verksamhet på en arena utanför Sverige, i en annan kultur med andra förutsättningar både beträffande kundunderlag, produktionsvillkor och attityder till hållbarhetsfrågor. Detta har också varit mitt syfte med uppgiften på längre sikt.

ECMO : Last Chance Treatment in the event of Respiratory Failure

ECMO is out of body oxygenation through an artificial lung in the event of severe respiratory failure where conventional care is not enough. Today the treament is complex, overwhelming and it is hard for staff to get a good overview. The usage of ECMO is increasing stready and therefore the treament needs to be simplified, better structured and fit the right context to become accessible to a larger scope of patients. With a user centered design approach and ethnographic research the ICU environment was studied in two hospitals in Sweden to gather information about ECMO. Interviews were held with doctors, nurses and perfusionists (responsible for the ECMO machine).   The creative work consisted of brainstorms with both designers, clinical experts and engineers. Mock-ups were built combined with sketching and feedback-sessions with clinical experts to create three different concept directions. One direction was taken further due to compactness, flexibility and integration.  The final concept is called Adoxy and creates one compact ECMO system that reduces cables and hides connections for an easier usage and cleaner apperance in a complex environment. The oxygenator (disposible part) placement is easier and more hidden for safety and usability.  The final product comes with two different carts, a ward cart, used internally in the hospital and an transportation cart, used outside of the hospital. The ward cart enables the staff to a safer internal transportation by connecting the EMCO to the patient bed. The transportation cart is lower in profile to fit in an airplane or helicopter.  Priming possibilities of the machine are designed for complete integration to be able to use when needed, otherwise hidden. There is a bigger screen on the ECMO for visibility but it is also connected to a general monitor that will show alarms when they occur. This is to give the nurses a chance to easier prioritize work from a distance and to get a better overview.
