Aspectos da validade de conteúdo e construto de tarefas motoras / Aspects of the content and construct validity of motor tasks

Nine academic authorities on motor development and motor assessment area were recruited to address the aims in theoretical terms. Three hundred and fifty children from Manaus, aged between eight and ten years of both gender participated of this study to address the empirical terms. The selected variables was: conceptual dimensionality of motor tasks, internal structure of motor tasks, gender, age and motor performance in motor tasks. To determine the conceptual dimensions of the tasks a questionnaire developed by the authors of this study (Appendix 3) was used. To study the internal structure of the task, we used the criteria described in the literature and adapted by the authors based on concepts previous determined. To determine the motor performance in tasks, 27 motor tasks were taken from three instruments of motor assessment: Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC-2), Körperkoordination Test für Kinder (KTK) and Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD - 2). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (p≤0.05). The results showed that 25% of motor tasks demonstrated a level of agreement among the experts, or the experts classified within the same dimension. The internal structure of the motor task had a specific analysis according to their nature depending on the criteria used. When analyzing the complexity/difficulty of the task, 33% of motor tasks showed a distribution similar to a normal distribution curve. The majority of the tasks were negative asymmetric that means an easy task since the most individuals achieved the maximum value proposed by the task. The discrimination according to gender showed that only 30% of the tasks significantly classified boys as superior than girls in the majority of the tasks. The discrimination according to age showed that fourteen tasks were significantly discriminatory (52%). Children of eight years consistently showed lower motor performance in the task compared to children with nine. Furthermore, children of nine years consistently showed lower motor performance in the task compared to children with ten. The construct validity of the motor tasks was assessed by exploratory factor analysis and was possible to extract four factors explaining 50.09% of the variance. From the 27 motor tasks, fifteen tasks (56%) achieved statistical criteria and explain the construct validity. Thus, the psychometric assumptions have to be respected in its entirety; in other words, the choice of items should be based on both theoretical and empirical elements. Therefore, caution on the importance of reversing the traditional procedure of construction and validation of instruments (concept, construct, dimensions, items or tasks) for empirical initial approach of multiple motor possibilities that can converge to the needs of the construct previously defined. / O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a validade de conteúdo e construto de tarefas motoras propostas por instrumentos de avaliação utilizados para discriminar o desempenho motor. Para contemplar os objetivos em termos teóricos participaram nove autoridades acadêmicas na área do desenvolvimento motor e avaliação motora. Para contemplar os objetivos em termos empíricos participaram 350 indivíduos, idades entre oito e dez anos, de ambos os sexos, regularmente matriculados em escolas na cidade de Manaus. As variáveis selecionadas para a pesquisa foram: dimensionalidade conceitual das tarefas motoras, organização interna das tarefas motoras, sexo, idade e desempenho motor nas tarefas motoras. Para determinar as dimensões conceituais das tarefas foi utilizado um questionário construído pelos próprios autores desta pesquisa (Apêndice 3). Para o estudo da organização interna da tarefa foram utilizados critérios descritos na literatura e ainda critérios adaptados pelos autores desta pesquisa definidos com base em conceitos já determinados. Para determinar o desempenho motor nas tarefas foram aplicadas 27 tarefas motoras retiradas de três instrumentos de avaliação motora Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC-2), Körperkoordination Test für Kinder (KTK) e Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2). Os dados foram analisados a partir dos recursos da estatística descritiva e inferencial (p≤0,05). Os resultados desta pesquisa demonstraram que apenas 25% das tarefas motoras em análise demonstraram um nível de concordância entre os juízes, ou seja, os juízes as classificaram dentro da mesma dimensão. Em relação à organização interna da tarefa motora foi possível observar que as tarefas em análise apresentam especificidades de acordo com sua natureza, variando em função do critério utilizado. Ao analisar a complexidade/dificuldade da tarefa constatou-se que apenas 33% das tarefas motoras apresentaram uma distribuição próxima a uma curva de distribuição normal. Assim, a maioria das tarefas apresentaram assimetria negativa, característica de tarefa fácil, pois a grande parte dos indivíduos conseguiu atingir o valor máximo proposto pela tarefa. Ao observar o poder de discriminação de acordo com o estrato de sexo observou-se que 30% das tarefas apenas discriminaram significantemente meninos de meninas, sendo os meninos superiores na maioria das tarefas. Em relação aos estratos idade quatorze tarefas apresentaram poder de discriminação significante (52%), onde as crianças de 08 anos sempre demonstraram desempenho motor na tarefa inferior as de 9 anos que consecutivamente apresentaram desempenho motor inferior as crianças de 10 anos. Em relação à validade de construto das tarefas motoras desta pesquisa foi possível extrair, por meio da análise fatorial exploratória, quatro fatores explicando 50,09% da variância. Das 27 tarefas motoras analisadas quinze tarefas (56%) supriram os critérios estatísticos e explicam o construto estudado. Conclui que os pressupostos psicométricos na escolha dos itens precisam ser respeitados em sua totalidade, ou seja, a escolha dos itens deve ser baseada tanto em elementos teóricos quanto empíricos. Assim, alerta-se para a importância de reverter o tradicional procedimento de construção e validação de instrumentos de medida (conceito, construto, dimensões, itens ou tarefas) para uma abordagem inicial empírica das múltiplas possibilidades motoras que possa convergir para as necessidades do construto previamente definido.

The external validity of the South African Substance Use Contextual Risk Instrument: predictive validity

Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / The purpose of the present study was to gather further external validity evidence towards the validity argument for an instrument designed to measure individual and contextual factors associated with adolescent substance use in low socio-economic status communities in the Western Cape, South Africa. The South African Substance Use Contextual Risk Instrument (SASUCRI) measures adolescents' subjective experiences of their own psycho-social and their communities' functioning. The present study uses secondary data analysis in order to further evaluate its external validity. Both content and structural evidence for the instrument has been gathered in the larger study in which the present study is located. Validity theory was used as the theoretical framework for the gathering of the different types of evidence in support of the validity argument for this instrument. The study employed non-probability purposive sampling to select schools from three education districts from which twenty-six schools were selected where the sample total was N=1959. English and Afrikaans versions of the instrument were administered to English- and Afrikaans home language, school-going adolescents, aged 12 to 21 years. All ethical standards were maintained throughout the research process. External evidence procedures were conducted using Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) to evaluate the extent to which the instrument could discriminate between substance using and non-using adolescents. The DFA revealed that nine SASUCRI sub-scales totals can act as significant predictors to substance use among adolescents based on the predictive validity of sub-scales.

Fundamental validity issues of an english as a foreign language test: a process-oriented approach to examining the reading construct as measured by the DR Congo English state examination

Doctor Educationis / The study aims to investigate the fundamental validity issues that can affect the DR Congo English state examination, a national exit test administered to high school final year students for certification. The study aspires to generate an understanding of the potential issues that affect the construct validity of a test within the epistemological stance that supports a strong relationship between test construct and test context. The study draws its theoretical underpinning from three theories: the validity theory that provides a theoretical ground necessary for understanding the quality of tests needed for assessing students’ reading abilities; the construction-integration theory that provides an understanding of how texts used in reading assessments are processed and understood by the examinees; and the strategic competence theory that explains how examinees deploy strategies to complete test tasks, and the extent to which these strategies tap into the reading construct. Furthermore, the study proposes a reading model that signposts the social context of testing; therefore, conceptualizing reading as both a cognitive and a social process. As research design, the study adopts an exploratory design using both qualitative and quantitative data. Besides, the study uses protocol analysis and content analysis methodologies. While the former provides an understanding of the cognitive processes that mediate the reading construct and test performance so as to explore the different strategies examinees use to answer the English state examination (henceforth termed ESE) test questions, the latter examines the content of the different ESE papers so as to identify the different textual and item features that potentially impact on examinees’ performance on the ESE tasks. As instruments, the study uses a concurrent strategies questionnaire administered to 496 student-participants, a contextual questionnaire administered to 26 student-participants, a contextual questionnaire administered to 27 teacher-participants, and eight tests administered to 496 student-participants. The findings indicate that, the ESE appears to be less appropriate to the ESE context as the majority of ESE test items target careful reading than expeditious reading; on the one hand, and reading at global level than to reading at local level; on the other hand. The findings also indicate that the ESE tasks hardly take account of the text structure and the underlined cognitive demands appropriate to the text types. Besides, the ESE fails to include other critical aspects of the reading construct. Finally, the findings also indicate that the ESE constructors may not be capable to construct an ESE with five functioning distractors as expected. Moreover, the inclusion of the implicit option 6 overlaps with the conceptual meaning of this option. The entire process of the present study has generated some insights that can advance our understanding of the construct validity of reading tests. These insights are: (a) the concept of validity is an evolving and context-dependent concept, (b) reading construct cannot be examined outside the actual context of reading activity, (c) elimination of distractors can sometimes be a construct-relevant strategy, (d) construct underrepresentation is a context-dependent concept, and (e) a reading test cannot be valid in all contexts. The suggested proposal for the improvement of the ESE requires the Congolese government through its Department of Education to (a) always conduct validation studies to justify the use of the ESE, (b) always consider the actual context of reading activity while developing the ESE, (c) revisit the meanings and interpretations of the ESE scores, (d) ensure the appropriateness of tasks to be included in the ESE, (e) ensure the construct representativeness of the ESE tasks, (f) revisit the number of questions to be included in the ESE, (g) avoid bias in the ESE texts in order to ensure fairness, (h) diversify the genres of ESE texts, (i) ensure the coherence of ESE texts through the use of transitions and cohesive devices, (j) ensure that the order of test questions is in alignment with the order of text information, (k) revisit the structure and length of the texts to be included in the ESE, (l) revisit the number of alternatives to be included in the ESE, and (m) reconsider the use of the implicit alternative 6.

Comparability of WPPSI-R and Slosson Tests as a Function of the Child's Ethnicity

The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, this study compared the performance of children on the WPPSI-R with their performance on the Slosson Intelligence Test. Secondly, this study explored the comparability of minority and non-minority students' scores on the WPPSI-R. Seventy five children between 3 and 7 years of age were administered the WPPSI-R and Slosson. Of this sample, 25 children were White, 25 children were Black, and 25 children were Mexican American. Low, but significant correlations were found between WPPSI-R and Slosson scores. The Vocabulary subscale of the WPPSI-R correlated highest, while the Geometric Design subscale correlated the lowest with the Slosson test scores. Further analyses indicated that White children obtained significantly higher scores on the WPPSI-R than both Black and Mexican American children.

A novel measure to assess self-discrimination in binge eating disorder and obesity

Stigmatized obese individuals tend to internalize the pervasive weight stigma which might lead to self-discrimination and increased psychopathology. While explicit and implicit weight stigma can be measured using self-report questionnaires and Implicit Association Tests (IAT), respectively, the assessment of self-discrimination relied solely on self-report. The present study sought to develop an IAT measuring implicit self-discrimination (SD-IAT) in samples of obese individuals with and without binge-eating disorder (BED). Seventy-eight individuals were recruited from the community and individually matched in three groups. Obese participants with BED, obese participants without BED (OB), and a normal weight control group without eating disorder psychopathology (HC) were assessed with the SD-IAT and other measures relevant for convergent and discriminant validation. Results revealed significantly higher implicit self-discrimination in the BED group when compared to both OB and HC. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between the SD-IAT with body mass index, experiences of weight stigma, depressive symptoms, and implicit self-esteem. Finally, implicit self-discrimination predicted eating disorder psychopathology over and above group membership, and experiences of weight stigma. This study provides first evidence of the validity of the SD-IAT. Assessing implicit self-discrimination might further increase understanding of weight stigma and its significance for psychosocial functioning among vulnerable obese individuals.

The primary goal of the study was to standardise and validate a scale to measure the arts’ contribution of arts festivals. To achieve this goal, four objectives were formulated. First, to study arts’ contribution of arts festivals by defining, analysing and exploring related concepts through the provision of a detailed background and discussion on the topic by means of a literature review. Second, to study and select applicable explanatory theory that can be used to develop a standardised scale that measures the arts’ contribution of arts festivals by means of a second literature review. Third to determine the validity and reliability of the scale measuring the arts festival’s contribution to the performing arts and to the visual arts through an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis. Lastly, to draw conclusions based on the research and make recommendations with regard to the standardisation and validation of the scale to measure the arts’ contribution of arts festivals. The first objective was achieved by conducting a literature study. The literature study on arts festivals and their contribution to the arts was explored by defining the term festival tourism; discussing aspects related to a festival (by defining a festival, explaining the festival’s relationship with culture and events, identifying the characteristics, types, benefits and potential problems associated with a festival, and identifying visitor motives for attending a festival); discussing aspects related to the term arts festival (by providing an overview of arts tourism, defining an arts festival, listing reasons for the establishment of an arts festival and discussing the arts present at arts festivals – through defining and classifying the arts); and identifying the contributions of an arts festival to the arts (by listing the types of contribution – educational, emotional, economic, quality, marketing, and growth and development – , discussing the purpose of contributing to the arts, listing perceptual differences of festival visitors regarding the contributions of an arts festival to the arts and discussing limitations of an arts festival to contribute to the arts). Achieving the second objective, the second literature study discussed the term survey (by defining a survey, identifying the types, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and merits of a survey and discussing the survey process); discussed the term standardisation (by defining standardisation and stating the purpose for the standardisation of a measurement scale); discussed the standardisation process (by outlining the different stages in the standardisation process – the planning phase, where the aim of the measure is specified, the content is defined and the test plan is developed; the item writing phase, includes the writing and review of items; assembling and pre-testing the experimental version of the measure, which includes the arrangements of the items, finalisation of the length, protocols for answering, development of administration instructions and pre-test of the experimental version of the measure; the item and data analysis phase consists of the determination of discriminating power, preliminary investigation into item bias and the establishment of validity and reliability; and revising the final version of the measure, which encompasses the revision of the items and test, the selection of items for the final version of the test, the refinement of administration instructions and score procedures and the administration of the final version of the test); and identified and discussed ethical considerations, foreseen problems, limitations and recommendations associated with conducting a survey and the standardisation of a measurement scale. The third objective was to determine the validity and reliability of the measurement scale. This objective was achieved by discussing the implementation phase of the measurement scale where attention was given to the survey design and sampling. A stratified random sampling method was used at three selected arts festivals in South Africa, the KKNK, Innibos and Vryfees, where a descriptive survey design was administered in the form of a measurement scale, such as a questionnaire. Research assistants were trained and the scale was administered in a consistent fashion which supports internal reliability. The same survey procedures were undertaken at all three arts festivals, supporting face validity and internal validity. Representative samples were collected at the three arts festivals, also supporting external validity. Attention was also given to the measurement scale design (where respondents could give their perceptions concerning the contributions made by the arts festival to the arts through the completion of the questionnaire – which was based on literature and contained the relevant information to collect problem specific information, supporting content validity and construct validity. The scale had also undergone the delphi-technique for expert advice, supporting face validity. Providing a summary of the data analysis procedure contributed to the achievement of this objective. The data collected from the measurement scale have been captured in Microsoft™ Excel™ and analysed using the statistical software program, SPSS. The data of the arts festivals contributing to the performing arts were analysed separately from the data of the festivals where they contribute to the visual arts. This was done to get a detailed data analysis for the standardisation of the measurement scale. The split of the data also contributed to the measurement scale being divided in two separate standardised scales in determining the arts festival’s contribution to a specific form of the arts; both the data of the performing arts and the data of the visual arts had undergone the same statistical procedure for data analysis in determining the validity and reliability thereof. The results indicated that the measurement scale is a valid and reliable measure in determining the arts festival’s contribution to both the arts forms. To determine the validity of the measurement scale pertaining to the performing arts and to the visual arts, an exploratory principal axis factor analysis with Oblimin rotation was conducted on the combined data of Innibos and Vryfees (n = 982). Bartlett's Test of Sphericity was p < 0.001 and the Kaiser-Meyer- Olkin test of sample adequacy rendered a value between 0 and 1, indicating that the sample sizes were adequate to conduct an exploratory factor analysis on the data of the performing arts (KMO = 0.958) and on the data of the visual arts (KMO = 0.972); all items of the performing arts (22 items) and of the visual arts (22 items) loaded on a factor with loadings greater than 0.2. The factor analysis on the performing arts data extracted five factors. Factor 1 (Quality and Education Contribution) was defined by 5 items with a Cronbach’s α-value of 0.867 and an interitem correlation mean of 0.568. Factor 2 (Growth and Development Contribution) was defined by 6 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.896; inter-item correlation = 0.594). Factor 3 (Emotional Contribution) was defined by 3 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.706; inter-item correlation = 0.440). Factor 4 (Economic Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.824; inter-item correlation = 0.540). Factor 5 (Marketing Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.866; inter-item correlation = 0.617). The factor analysis on the visual arts data extracted four factors. Factor 1 (Education and Growth and Development Contribution) was defined by 8 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.947; inter-item correlation = 0.690). Factor 2 (Economic and Quality Contribution) was defined by 7 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.920; inter-item correlation = 0.622). Factor 3 (Emotional Contribution) was defined by 3 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.828; inter-item correlation = 0.616). Factor 4 (Marketing Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.905; inter-item correlation of 0.704). There were correlations between factors of the performing arts and between the factors of the visual arts, where all correlations were 0.3 and larger, supporting construct validity. Further validity of the measurement scale was determined by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the performing arts data and on the visual arts data of KKNK (n = 602), where the path diagram confirmed the factor structures of both the performing arts and visual arts exploratory factor analyses, supporting criterion validity. CFA goodness-of-fit indexes were also used to determine whether the models fit with the data. The performing arts model and the visual arts model were found to have an adequate to good fit with the data of KKNK. The chi-square test of Independence (X2) for the performing arts rendered a value of p < 0.001 and for the visual arts was p < 0.001. The chi-square divided by the degrees of freedom (X2 / df) for the performing arts was 4.284 and for the visual arts was 4.9, the Comparative Fit Index (CFI) for the performing arts was 0.914 and for the visual arts was 0.931, and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) for the performing arts was 0.074 and for the visual arts was 0.079. To determine the reliability of the measurement scale, the Cronbach’s Alpha values and inter-item correlations between the factors were determined. All the factors of the performing arts rendered a high Cronbach’s Alpha value (greater than 0.7) and for the visual arts a value of 0.8. All the factors of the performing arts rendered a high interitem correlation value (greater than 0.4) and for the visual arts a value greater than 0.6. The final objective, to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on the results of the study, indicated that this study made a significant contribution to the literature and methodology of standardising a measurement scale and to the planning of arts festivals as it would lead to the development of arts festivals contributing to the arts more effectively and more efficiently. Future research on this topic should be conducted at other arts festivals, including Englishlanguage arts festivals, to enable comparative studies to be made and supporting the test-retest reliability theory on the standardised measurement scale. It is also recommended that the study should measure contribution to the arts by other arts-related organisations, for example, at museums, theatres, and galleries, by administering the standardised scale to measure the contribution they make to their specific arts form. Using existing dietary data for evaluating the construct validity of a nutrient profiling model / Susara JohannaLee

AIM: Nutrient profiling can be defined as ‘the science of categorising foods according to their nutritional composition’ and can be used as a valuable tool in food labelling legislation. Validation is an absolute essential step in the implementation of a nutrient profiling model (NPM), it is important to verify whether or not the NPM has a good solid scientific basis and if it is at all suitable for South Africa. This mini-dissertation investigated the construct validity of a NPM for South Africa. OBJECTIVES: 1) To test construct validity for the nutrient profiling model by examining the relationship between the way the NPM categorises foods and the healthiness of diets in South Africa. 2) To assess if the quality of a diet will improve if ‘unhealthy’ foods are replaced by ‘healthy’ foods as defined by the NPM. STUDY DESIGN: Nested in the South African leg of the international PURE (Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology) study at baseline. METHOD: The PURE (Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology) baseline study conducted in the North-West province in 2005, was identified as a suitable dataset of food intake. For the first objective the proportion of respondent’s diets consisting of healthy or unhealthy food, as classified by the NPM, was calculated. The respondents were divided into four groups based on their dietary quality as characterised by the Diet Quality Index (DQI), the lower the DQI-score the better the diet quality. The proportion of healthy or unhealthy foods were compared to the DQI-scores using one-way ANOVA’s, p-values were calculated using the Tukey post-hoc test. For the second objective the diet quality of four different diets consisting of either YES foods (according to NPM), NO foods, a combination of YES and NO were calculated and compared. RESULTS: The model displayed good construct validity by showing a statistically significant positive relationship between the proportion of ‘healthy’ (p<0.0001) and ‘unhealthy’ (p<0.0001) foods, as classified by the NPM, and participants’ DQI-scores. The second objective was also confirmed and a diet consisting of ‘healthy’ foods or a diet where ‘unhealthy’ foods were substituted by ‘healthy’ foods, had a better DQI than diets consisting only of ‘unhealthy’ foods CONCLUSION: Construct validity was confirmed by proving that the better the diet quality of the respondents the bigger their proportion of foods categorised as ‘healthy’ by the NPM and vice versa. / MSc (Dietetics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Second, to study and select applicable explanatory theory that can be used to develop a standardised scale that measures the arts’ contribution of arts festivals by means of a second literature review. Third to determine the validity and reliability of the scale measuring the arts festival’s contribution to the performing arts and to the visual arts through an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis. Lastly, to draw conclusions based on the research and make recommendations with regard to the standardisation and validation of the scale to measure the arts’ contribution of arts festivals. The first objective was achieved by conducting a literature study. The literature study on arts festivals and their contribution to the arts was explored by defining the term festival tourism; discussing aspects related to a festival (by defining a festival, explaining the festival’s relationship with culture and events, identifying the characteristics, types, benefits and potential problems associated with a festival, and identifying visitor motives for attending a festival); discussing aspects related to the term arts festival (by providing an overview of arts tourism, defining an arts festival, listing reasons for the establishment of an arts festival and discussing the arts present at arts festivals – through defining and classifying the arts); and identifying the contributions of an arts festival to the arts (by listing the types of contribution – educational, emotional, economic, quality, marketing, and growth and development – , discussing the purpose of contributing to the arts, listing perceptual differences of festival visitors regarding the contributions of an arts festival to the arts and discussing limitations of an arts festival to contribute to the arts). Achieving the second objective, the second literature study discussed the term survey (by defining a survey, identifying the types, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and merits of a survey and discussing the survey process); discussed the term standardisation (by defining standardisation and stating the purpose for the standardisation of a measurement scale); discussed the standardisation process (by outlining the different stages in the standardisation process – the planning phase, where the aim of the measure is specified, the content is defined and the test plan is developed; the item writing phase, includes the writing and review of items; assembling and pre-testing the experimental version of the measure, which includes the arrangements of the items, finalisation of the length, protocols for answering, development of administration instructions and pre-test of the experimental version of the measure; the item and data analysis phase consists of the determination of discriminating power, preliminary investigation into item bias and the establishment of validity and reliability; and revising the final version of the measure, which encompasses the revision of the items and test, the selection of items for the final version of the test, the refinement of administration instructions and score procedures and the administration of the final version of the test); and identified and discussed ethical considerations, foreseen problems, limitations and recommendations associated with conducting a survey and the standardisation of a measurement scale. The third objective was to determine the validity and reliability of the measurement scale. This objective was achieved by discussing the implementation phase of the measurement scale where attention was given to the survey design and sampling. A stratified random sampling method was used at three selected arts festivals in South Africa, the KKNK, Innibos and Vryfees, where a descriptive survey design was administered in the form of a measurement scale, such as a questionnaire. Research assistants were trained and the scale was administered in a consistent fashion which supports internal reliability. The same survey procedures were undertaken at all three arts festivals, supporting face validity and internal validity. Representative samples were collected at the three arts festivals, also supporting external validity. Attention was also given to the measurement scale design (where respondents could give their perceptions concerning the contributions made by the arts festival to the arts through the completion of the questionnaire – which was based on literature and contained the relevant information to collect problem specific information, supporting content validity and construct validity. The scale had also undergone the delphi-technique for expert advice, supporting face validity. Providing a summary of the data analysis procedure contributed to the achievement of this objective. The data collected from the measurement scale have been captured in Microsoft™ Excel™ and analysed using the statistical software program, SPSS. The data of the arts festivals contributing to the performing arts were analysed separately from the data of the festivals where they contribute to the visual arts. This was done to get a detailed data analysis for the standardisation of the measurement scale. The split of the data also contributed to the measurement scale being divided in two separate standardised scales in determining the arts festival’s contribution to a specific form of the arts; both the data of the performing arts and the data of the visual arts had undergone the same statistical procedure for data analysis in determining the validity and reliability thereof. The results indicated that the measurement scale is a valid and reliable measure in determining the arts festival’s contribution to both the arts forms. To determine the validity of the measurement scale pertaining to the performing arts and to the visual arts, an exploratory principal axis factor analysis with Oblimin rotation was conducted on the combined data of Innibos and Vryfees (n = 982). Bartlett's Test of Sphericity was p < 0.001 and the Kaiser-Meyer- Olkin test of sample adequacy rendered a value between 0 and 1, indicating that the sample sizes were adequate to conduct an exploratory factor analysis on the data of the performing arts (KMO = 0.958) and on the data of the visual arts (KMO = 0.972); all items of the performing arts (22 items) and of the visual arts (22 items) loaded on a factor with loadings greater than 0.2. The factor analysis on the performing arts data extracted five factors. Factor 1 (Quality and Education Contribution) was defined by 5 items with a Cronbach’s α-value of 0.867 and an interitem correlation mean of 0.568. Factor 2 (Growth and Development Contribution) was defined by 6 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.896; inter-item correlation = 0.594). Factor 3 (Emotional Contribution) was defined by 3 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.706; inter-item correlation = 0.440). Factor 4 (Economic Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.824; inter-item correlation = 0.540). Factor 5 (Marketing Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.866; inter-item correlation = 0.617). The factor analysis on the visual arts data extracted four factors. Factor 1 (Education and Growth and Development Contribution) was defined by 8 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.947; inter-item correlation = 0.690). Factor 2 (Economic and Quality Contribution) was defined by 7 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.920; inter-item correlation = 0.622). Factor 3 (Emotional Contribution) was defined by 3 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.828; inter-item correlation = 0.616). Factor 4 (Marketing Contribution) was defined by 4 items (Cronbach’s α = 0.905; inter-item correlation of 0.704). There were correlations between factors of the performing arts and between the factors of the visual arts, where all correlations were 0.3 and larger, supporting construct validity. Further validity of the measurement scale was determined by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the performing arts data and on the visual arts data of KKNK (n = 602), where the path diagram confirmed the factor structures of both the performing arts and visual arts exploratory factor analyses, supporting criterion validity. CFA goodness-of-fit indexes were also used to determine whether the models fit with the data. The performing arts model and the visual arts model were found to have an adequate to good fit with the data of KKNK. The chi-square test of Independence (X2) for the performing arts rendered a value of p < 0.001 and for the visual arts was p < 0.001. The chi-square divided by the degrees of freedom (X2 / df) for the performing arts was 4.284 and for the visual arts was 4.9, the Comparative Fit Index (CFI) for the performing arts was 0.914 and for the visual arts was 0.931, and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) for the performing arts was 0.074 and for the visual arts was 0.079. To determine the reliability of the measurement scale, the Cronbach’s Alpha values and inter-item correlations between the factors were determined. All the factors of the performing arts rendered a high Cronbach’s Alpha value (greater than 0.7) and for the visual arts a value of 0.8. All the factors of the performing arts rendered a high interitem correlation value (greater than 0.4) and for the visual arts a value greater than 0.6. The final objective, to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on the results of the study, indicated that this study made a significant contribution to the literature and methodology of standardising a measurement scale and to the planning of arts festivals as it would lead to the development of arts festivals contributing to the arts more effectively and more efficiently. Future research on this topic should be conducted at other arts festivals, including Englishlanguage arts festivals, to enable comparative studies to be made and supporting the test-retest reliability theory on the standardised measurement scale. It is also recommended that the study should measure contribution to the arts by other arts-related organisations, for example, at museums, theatres, and galleries, by administering the standardised scale to measure the contribution they make to their specific arts form. It is important to standardise a measurement scale for arts contribution to better understand the contributing factors of the arts festival to the arts which will assist festival managers in implementing strategies that ensure the livelihood and ongoing contribution of arts festivals to the arts. / PhD (Tourism Management), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
