New Collective structures in the Z=76 stable odd neutron nucleus, 187Os

Sithole, Makuhane Abel January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Low- and medium-spin bands of 187Os have been studied using the AFRODITE array, following the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements of γ − γ coincidences, angular distribution ratios (RAD), polarization and γ-intensities were performed using eleven High Purity Germanium (HPGe) clover detectors. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been significantly extended and five new bands have been added to the level scheme. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM), cranked Nilsson-StrutinskyBogoliubov (CNSB) formalism and Quasiparticle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (QTR) model. Systematic comparison of bands with the neighbouring isotopes has also been made. Comparison of the models with experimental data shows good agreement. The configurations of some of the previously observed bands have been modified. Most importantly, the coupling of 2+ γ band to the 11/2+[615] neutron configuration is observed for the first time.

Rotational Structure of Extremely Floppy van der Waals Complexes: Adiabatic Separation of Angular and Radial Motion

Ward, P. Daniel 01 May 2000 (has links)
The adiabatic or Born-Oppenheimer approximation is often used in molecular calculations to simplify the solution to the Schrodinger equation. The basis of the approximation is the large difference in the relative motions of the nuclei and electrons in the molecule-the electrons are able to respond almost instantly to the movements of the nuclei. Thus, the nuclei may be regarded as being fixed in a certain position and the Schrodinger equation can then be solved using the potential obtained by solving the electronic problem at fixed nuclear configuration. A similar argument can be used to decouple the angular and radial motions of many van der Waals complexes because, like nuclei in molecules, the radial motions in many van der Waals complexes are strongly localized. Fixing the radial separation between the atoms and molecules in the complex to a particular value results in a Schrodinger equation that is much simpler to solve because it is only dependent on angles. van der Waals complexes containing helium atoms, however, present a dilemma because the extremely weak interactions present also lead to large amplitude radial as well as angular motions. Because the basis of the adiabatic approximation is a large difference in time scale between the angular and radial motions, the validity of the adiabatic approximation for helium complexes is uncertain. In this thesis, the adiabatic separation of angular and radial motion is shown to be accurate for extremely floppy complexes of helium by demonstrating its use on the van der Waals molecule He-HCN. A major application of this method is expected to be the quick calculation of approximate wave functions for Diffusion Monte Carlo studies of the rotation of impurity molecules inside ultra-cold droplets of helium. The method presented here is significantly faster than other methods (e.g., Variational Monte Carlo) that have been used to calculate approximate wave functions for Diffusion Monte Carlo.

Directional correlation of the 346-136 keV gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹

Wilson, Robert Allan 01 May 1969 (has links)
The directional correlation of the 346-136 Kev gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹ was measured using the delayed coincidence method with a source of Hf¹⁸¹ in 27 N HF. The contributions to the composite delayed coincidence spectrum of the interfering 133-482 Kev and 133 - 346 Kev cascades were removed by the subtraction from this spectrum of appropriate 133-482 Kev pure delayed coincidence data. The extracted 346 -136 Kev coincidence data then yielded the correlation coefficients A₂₂ = o.190 土0.011 and A₄₄. = -0.025 土O. 024 that are consistent with the established spin sequence 5/ 2(E2)9 / 2(Ml +E2)7 / 2 and with an admixture of 16.20/0土1. 2% E2 radiation in the 136 Kev mixed transition. The results of the experiment are in excellent agreement with those obtained from conversion electron measurements and resolve the discrepancy apparent in earlier work on the 346-136 Kev cascade

Experimental studies at CERN-nTOF of the 230Th(n,f) reaction

Lapinski, Felicia January 2020 (has links)
This work investigates the feasibility to perform an experiment at CERN n_TOF to study the fission cross section and fission fragment angular distribution (FFAD) of the 230Th(n,f) reaction. An analysis of fission fragment energy losses in the experimental target resulted in a choice of target thickness of 0.1 µm (100 µg/cm2 ), which yields good transmission out of the target at up to 45° emission angles from the target normal. A detection setup using ten PPAC detectors with nine thorium targets interleaved in between them was investigated, where the detectors and targets were tilted 45° with respect to the neutron beam. This makes it possible to measure all emission angles needed with respect to the neutron beam in order to determine the FFAD. For the experimental area EAR2 at n_TOF, a prediction of the count rate in the experiment resulted in low statistical uncertainties after a few weeks of beam time, which indicates that an experiment like this is feasible.

Measurements of biomechanical workload onthe forearm during padel : a pilot study / Mätning av belastning på underarm under padelspel : en pilotstudie

Forsström, Rebecka January 2022 (has links)
Padel involves repetitive and high-velocity upper limb movements, which can be associated with overuse injuries. There is a lack of evidence regarding injury prevention in padel and a necessity of developing and evaluating ways to monitor workload. The objective of this study was to use a new mobile measurement method (Delsys Trigno Light System) to evaluate muscle activation and movement of the forearm during padel. The percentage of MVC (%MVC) of Mm. Extensor carpi radialis (ECR) longus et brevis and M. flexor carpi radialis (FCR), angular velocities of the wrist and co-contraction between ECR and FCR were measured and analyzed. The main results showed a relatively low general muscle activation; 1.42 (0.44 – 2.33) %MVC of FCR and 8.02 (4.23 – 12.62) %MVC of ECR, with significantly greater muscle activation of the ECR than the FCR (p<0.001), high angular wrist velocities; 17.0 (13.2 – 34.6) °/s, and a weak positive correlation for co-contraction with peak values of FCR > 0.15 V and concurrent ECR, Spearman’s r = 0.326, p<0.001 and peak values of ECR > 0,15 V and concurrent FCR, Spearman’s r = 0.181, p<0.001. This study indicates that this mobile measurement method may be used to evaluate biomechanical workload on the forearm during padel play and may serve as an injury preventive tool.
