Hydrologic risk assessment framework for Alberta's green zoneWagner, Michael Johann 11 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, a hydrologic classification approach was tested using the shape factor of hydrographs to represent variation in streamflow regimes across Alberta. Hydrograph shape factor was effective at separating the forested landbase into 6 spatially distinct regions. Further statistical analysis of hydrometric data showed each region to have unique streamflow characteristics. Differences in physiography between regions were evident and strong associations were found between physical catchment characteristics and hydrologic variables describing streamflow magnitude and timing. In a case study, findings were used to define the regional natural range of hydrologic variation and applied into a watershed assessment tool evaluating the potential changes to streamflow regimes as a result of forest disturbance. This analysis showed that because of hydrologic variability among regions, spatial variation in sensitivity to harvest likely exists within the forested landbase, highlighting the need for development of regional criteria and indicators for sustainable management of water resources. / Forest Biology and Management

Implementation of annual national assessment in the intermediate phase at King Cetshwayo district schoolsNtuli, Nombali Lucratia Rose January 2018 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master Of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies at the University Of Zululand, 2018 / The purpose of this study was to understand the efficacy of the implementation of Annual National Assessment (ANA). In this study, the researcher chose King Cetshwayo District and Mthunzini circuit as a field of investigation. The investigation was conducted using a mixed method approach which was driven by both qualititave and quantitative approach. In this case, the Intermediate Phase schools were the main target to select a sample of 75 participants. All these randomly selected educators answered a questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions while five Heads of Departments (HoDs) and five educators were purposively selected to participate in the in-depth interview session. The main objectives of the investigation were to: (a) explore teachers’ views about the implementation of ANA in the Intermediate Phase; (b) find out teachers’ perspectives of on the use of ANA as diagnostic assessment tool; and (c) find out about the impact of ANA on learner performance in English First Additional Language. The findings revealed that the majority of educators complained about lack of training, administration including time in which ANA is written, exposure of underperforming schools and methods of teaching which encourage rote learning. Most educators were unhappy that their district officials were not supportive during the administration phase. Educators raised concerns that Grade 4 learners have difficulty in understanding the questions since it is their first year of using English as Language of Learning and Teaching. Some educators indicated that they have not been sent to ANA workshops yet they are expected to administer the assessment. Based on the findings, the researcher realised that the objectives of the implementation of ANA were not achieved in some schools due to the negative attitude displayed by educators towards ANA. The inconsistency of the test questions makes it difficult for the Department of Basic Education to ascertain whether or not there is any improvement in ANA results. The researcher recommends that in order for ANA to be successfully implemented, the school management teams and the subject advisors have to work closely with Intermediate Phase educators and provide necessary resources and support.

Effects of Basin Size on Streamflow in Southern OntarioJelenick, Alison D. 04 1900 (has links)

Daily discharge data from five Southern Ontario river systems were statistically analysed to seek relationships between streamflow characteristics and basin size. From each river system, at least two stations were used to detennine such relationships. The physiographic characteristics of each river system were also examined and qualitatively related to the streamflow statistics. Comparisons between physiographic regions were expected to support the general nature of the results obtained for each river system.

In Southern Ontario, drainage area is correlated with mean annual peak flows. When the flows were transformed into discharge per unit area no consistent effects of basin area on the streamflow characteristics were found. However, differences in streamflow per unit area between various sub-basins can be qualitatively explained by several physical characteristics of the drainage basins.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Regional And Watershed-Scale Coherence In The Stable-Oxygen and Carbon Isotope Ratio Time Series in Tree Rings Of Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens)Roden, John S., Johnstone, James A., Dawson, Todd E. 07 1900 (has links)
Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) ecosystems are strongly influenced by the presence of
summer marine fog, and variation in fog frequency is closely linked to climate variation in the NE Pacific region. Because oxygen isotope composition (𝛿¹⁸O) of organic matter records distinct water sources (e.g. summertime fog vs. winter precipitation) and carbon isotopes (𝛿¹³C) are typically sensitive to humidity and water status, it then follows that inter-annual variation in tree-ring isotope ratios, which are coherent across multiple sites, should preserve a potentially powerful proxy for climate reconstruction. Here we present an analysis of a 50-year time series for both 𝛿¹⁸O and 𝛿¹³C values from subdivided tree rings obtained from multiple redwood trees at multiple sites. Within-site and between site correlations were highly significant (p < 0.01) for the 𝛿¹⁸O time series indicating a regionally coherent common forcing of 𝛿¹⁸O fractionation. Within-site and between-site correlation coefficients were lower for the 𝛿¹³C than for the 𝛿¹⁸O time series although most were still significant (at least to p < 0.05). The hypothesized reason for the differences in the correlation is that carbon isotope discrimination is more sensitive to microenvironmental and tree-level physiological variation than is 𝛿¹⁸O fractionation. Stable-isotope variation in tree-ring cellulose was similar between slope, gully and riparian micro-habitats within a single watershed, implying that minor topographic variation when sampling should not be a major concern. These results indicate that stable-isotope time series from
redwood tree rings are strongly influenced by regional climate drivers and potentially valuable proxies for Pacific coastal climate variability.
