L’objectif du présent travail est de proposer, aux étudiants de français langue étrangère en Colombie, unemodélisation de dictionnaire culturel permettant de décrire et d’étudier une nomenclature en français, richeen contenus culturels à visée anthropologique. Elle peut motiver une meilleure réflexion et une connaissanceplus approfondie de la langue française et du système culturel de ce pays.Nous nous sommes principalement fondée sur les divergences linguistiques, conceptuelles et culturelles,totales ou partielles, qui existent entre l’univers français et celui de la Colombie dans des domainesspécifiques. Les contenus culturels d’un grand nombre de méthodes de français et d’ouvrages pédagogiquesou spécialisés connexes ont été examinés afin d’identifier le vocabulaire pouvant être acquis par lesétudiants dans le cadre de leur apprentissage du français mais aussi pour établir notre corpus.Ce travail comprend une analyse comparative sociolinguistique et culturelle de l’univers français etcolombien. Il précise la manière dont nous avons procédé lors de différentes étapes effectuées pourconstituer cette modélisation. Parmi elles, figurent la mise en place d’un cadre théorique, la création d’uncorpus, la proposition d’un modèle de microstructure d’article de dictionnaire culturel, de possiblesméthodes de mettre en évidence le vocabulaire à forts contenus culturels à visée anthropologique, lasélection d’un échantillon d’unités linguistiques ou terminologiques, l’examen des données le concernant, larédaction des informations pour les entrées sélectionnées, la création d’articles de dictionnaire et leurprésentation finale. / The aim of this research is to propose a modelling of a cultural dictionary for students of French as a foreignlanguage in Colombia. It will permit the description and study of French nomenclature at a high level ofanthropological cultural content. This will also enable an in-depth knowledge of French language andculture.We have mainly based our study on total or partial, linguistics and the conceptual and cultural differencesthat exist between French and Colombian worlds in specific fields. We have examined French learningmanuals and other related ressources, not only to create a corpus, but also to identify the vocabulary that islearned by students of French.This research includes a sociolinguistic and cultural comparison between French and Colombian worlds. Weshall explain how this projet has been set up and conducted : the constitution of a theoretical framework, thecreation of a corpus, the proposition of a modelling of microstructure of cultural dictionary entries, possiblemethods to identify the vocabulary with high levels of anthropological cultural contents, the selection of asample of words and terms, the examination of data, the redaction of informations for selected entries, thecreation of dictionary entries and their final presentation.

L'expérience de la télévision sur le téléphone portable : pratiques émergentes en contexte de convergence multimédia / The television experience on mobile phones : emerging practices in the context of multimedia convergence

Dans cette recherche, les usages de la télévision sur le téléphone portable seront saisis dans leur rapport aux contextes et aux situations auxquels ils sont ajustés. Cela concerne donc la manière dont on consulte et visionne des contenus audiovisuels sur des téléphones mobiles dans l’espace public en relation avec l’environnement. De quelle façon lesusagers mobilisent-ils les affordances matérielles et sensibles de l’environnement ? L’entrée par une approche comparative entre la France et la Roumanie, nous permet d’inclure dans l’analyse la dimension anthropologique trop souvent occultée de ces usages : de quelles façons ces usages sont-ils façonnés par les conventions collectives ?La question de l’identité de la télévision sur le téléphone portable se pose sous l’angle des frottements et tissages aux autres médias. Au niveau des méthodes, le tournant de la « nouvelle communication » de l’Ecole de Palo Alto conjugué au tournant « pragmatiste » implique un déplacement d’angle d’analyse par rapport aux perspectives cognitivistes : seules lesmanifestations (visibles, audibles, etc.) peuvent être analysées et non pas les raisons, les motivations ou les pensées enfouies dans la « tête » des usagers. Les résultats de cette recherche comportent dans ce sens une propositionméthodologique susceptible d’enrichir les réflexions en SIC autour d’un renouvellement des approches des usages émergents dans le contexte des nouveaux médias / In this research, the uses of television on the mobile phone will be studied in their relation to the contexts and situations to which they are adjusted. This concerns the ways in which users consult and watch television on their mobile phones in public spaces by taking into account the environment. How do users recognize and use sensitive material affordances allowed by the environment? The comparative approach between France and Romania allows us to include in the analysis the “anthropological dimension” of these uses. How these uses are in-formed by social norms ? The question of the identity of television on mobile phones is studied from the angle of frictions and contacts to other media. In terms of method, we were inspired by the "new communication turn" (the School of Palo Alto) and the "pragmatist turn”. This implies that onlyexpressions can be analyzed and not the reasons, motivations or thoughts hidden in the "head" of users. The results of this research include a proposal in this direction that may enrich the methodological reflections around a renewed approach of emerging uses

Reification, Resistance, and Transformation? The Impact of Migration and Demographics on Linguistic, Racial, and Ethnic Identity and Equity in Educational Systems: An Applied Approach

Using an applied anthropological approach focused on language, this study investigates the relationship between linguistic, racial, and ethnic identities and school resource access in the context of migration. This project examines how these identities are established, experienced, reified, and resisted by various school actors. Exposing power at its roots through a multi-level analysis, this research informs on how people negotiate socialization into particular identities, propelling them toward positions in school and society of varying opportunity. Focused on two elementary schools in a central Florida county that has been and is undergoing demographic changes, this work offers applications for educational institutions dealing with migration. One school’s orientation to meeting needs of non-English speaking students significantly impacts its ability to reach and form relationships with parents and improve the educational outcomes for children. The second school’s culturally responsivity makes it possible to meet higher expectations. At both schools, there is a disconnect between how the school and state think about people and how those people think about themselves, which erases groups and raises questions about how well students from those groups are served. While the ideologies promoted in dominant society are constraining, struggles and resistance do impact and reorganize the system. This study provides recommendations for the research site and similar schools to address linguistic, racial, and ethnic educational inequity. For instance, this project emphasizes the need to provide linguistically appropriate school-home communication. It also offers a means for the schools and state to better serve students by understanding the nuances of identity through more appropriate measures of race and ethnicity.

Traductions Gigognes Or Translation of a Translation of a Translation

The purpose of this thesis is to create a grid to assist in analysing three works of migration literature selected from the anthology, Retrato de una nube: Primera antología del cuento hispano canadiense (Molina Lora & Torres-Recinos, 2008) that would be informative in carrying out their translation with greater depth and scope, including language, discourse and real-life experience. My choice for a model was a recasting of Octavio Paz’s diachronic sequence “translations of translations of translations” (1979, p. 14) into its synchronic equivalent. Translation of the surface text or my interlinguistic (microtextual) translation from Spanish into English is the starting point, and the other two levels then need to be defined in relation to this first one. The next structural level in the sequence is the level that is normally consulted by the translator when the microtext is not sufficient for a satisfactory translation, i.e. the level of the macrotext, where there are networks of elements: plot, characterization, dialogue along with power relations and other characteristics reflected in the dialogue as discovered using critical discourse analysis. These larger discursive structures make up a level, a subtext that “encloses” the previous one. Since the texts chosen are works of migration literature, this subtext deals with migration and with the corresponding characteristics. At this level the translation is that of the migrant from one nationality to another represented with the characters and elements of this migration. Level 3 (the anthropological) is the third translation that encloses the other two, that of the migrant author, who translates him/herself from one nationality to another and who shows diasporic and hybrid characteristics reflected through the (micro)textual and discursive layers. The resulting structure is that of three vertical levels of translations that are synchronic and vertical rather than diachronic and horizontal (as Paz seems to have imagined) that not only describe translations internally but that also translate between themselves externally and in both directions: the linguistic (microtextual) into the discursive, and inversely, and the discursive into the anthropological, and inversely. Résumé : L’objectif de cette thèse consiste en l’élaboration d’une nouvelle grille d’analyse de trois nouvelles de la littérature migrante hispano-canadienne sélectionnées de l’anthologie, Retrato de una nube: Primera antología del cuento hispano canadiense (Molina Lora & Torres-Recinos, 2008) pour entreprendre et justifier leur traduction avec un plus grand degré de profondeur et une portée plus large, à la fois linguistique, discursive et phénoménologique. En vue de développer cette grille, j’ai choisi de revisiter la séquence diachronique d’Octavio Paz, « traductions de traductions de traductions » et de la transposer en son équivalent synchronique. La traduction interlinguistique (microtextuelle) de l'espagnol vers l'anglais constitue le point de départ, les deux autres niveaux devant être définis par rapport à celui-ci. Le niveau structurel qui suit dans la séquence est le niveau normalement consulté par le traducteur ou la traductrice lorsque le microtexte ne suffit pas à la réalisation d’une traduction adéquate, à savoir le niveau du macrotexte, où il existe une série de réseaux de signifiants, que ce soit l'intrigue, la caractérisation des personnages, les dialogues où se révèlent les relations de pouvoir entre ces derniers, et d’autres caractéristiques relatives à la mise en œuvre de ces dialogues, tel qu’on les découvre en appliquant une analyse critique du discours. Ces grandes structures discursives constituent un sous-texte qui « renferme » le précédent. Puisque les textes choisis sont des œuvres de littérature migrante, ce sous-texte traite de la migration et de ses caractéristiques socio-discursives. À ce niveau, la traduction est celle du migrant qui « passe » d'une identité nationale à l'autre, avec tous les personnages et tous les éléments que ce passage suppose. Le troisième niveau, de type anthropologique, est la troisième traduction qui renferme les deux autres, celle de l'auteur-migrant qui traduit en quelque sorte sa nationalité en une autre, et qui présente des caractéristiques hybrides et diasporiques traversant les couches (micro) textuelle et discursive. La structure obtenue est celle de trois niveaux de traduction qui sont synchroniques et verticaux plutôt que diachroniques et horizontaux (comme Paz semble les avoir imaginés), formant ainsi non seulement des traductions internes à chaque niveau, mais qui se traduisent aussi entre eux et dans les deux sens: le linguistique (microtextuel) se traduit dans le discursif, et inversement, et le discursif dans l’anthropologique, et inversement.

Ce travail de recherche étudie la vie quotidienne des personnes âgées atteintes de la maladie d’Alzheimer vivant à domicile. Le groupe social « personnes âgées Alzheimer » nouvellement identifié, se révèle être un sérieux défi à surmonter pour l’ensemble de la société. A travers une approche anthropologique, qui explore et compare la vie quotidienne de personnes malades vivant à Montpellier à celle des personnes vivant à Alger, nous avons pu distinguer certaines caractéristiques de ressemblance et de divergence. En analysant nos observations rapportées sur chacun des deux terrains d’étude, en se basant sur les réactions spontanées de nos informateurs et sur les déclarations de leur entourage, nous avons tenté de comprendre la réalité quotidienne de ces personnes âgées malades. En effet, quelque soit le model culturel et social, que l’on soit à Alger ou à Montpellier les « personnes âgées Alzheimer » aboutissent plus au moins rapidement au confinement et au rétrécissement du réseau social. L’épuisement des aidants informels (la famille) est plus marqué chez les aidants algériens, du fait de l’inexistence d’aidant professionnel. D’autre part, en France, ces personnes bénéficient d’un soutien institutionnel largement diversifié, alors que du coté algérien la prise en charge familiale compense la quasi-absence de dispositifs d’aide à la personne âgée. Ce travail de recherche n’est pas représentatif de toute la population âgée atteinte par la maladie d’Alzheimer mais l’objectif est d’initier de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sur un groupe social qui ne cesse de grandir dans un contexte marqué par des modifications démographiques et par les maladies chroniques liés au grand d’âge. / This research examines the daily lives of seniors with Alzheimer's disease living at home. The social group "elderly Alzheimer 'newly identified, appears to be a serious challenge to overcome for the whole of society. Through an anthropological approach, which explores and compares the daily lives of sick people living in Montpellier to that of people living in Algiers, we were able to distinguish certain features of similarity and divergence. Depletion of informal caregivers (family) is more pronounced among caregivers Algeria, because of the lack of professional help. On the other hand, in France, they benefit from a broadly diversified institutional support, while the Algerian side the strong family support compensates for the virtual absence of mechanisms to help the elderly. This research is not representative of the entire population affected by Alzheimer's disease but the goal is to introduce new ways of thinking about a social group that continues to grow in a context marked by changes demographic and chronic diseases related to high age.

Cette thèse s'intéresse au processus de création chorégraphique d'un spectacle de danses traditionnelles en Bretagne. Elle a été menée à partir d’un terrain effectué au sein de la Kevrenn Alré, ensemble de musique et danse bretonnes basé à Auray dans le Morbihan, de novembre 2010 à novembre 2012. Comme la majorité des groupes bretons, cet ensemble crée son spectacle annuel pour le besoin d'un concours organisé par sa confédération. La recherche analyse les activités et les modes collectifs de production mis en œuvre lors de la fabrication du spectacle Abenn dimeurh sur le thème des préparatifs d'une noce en pays d'Auray vers 1900. La description ethnographique d'un moment de concours et l'analyse des dynamiques internes de la Kevrenn Alré permettent d'abord d'appréhender la relation du groupe à son environnement socio-culturel et d'interroger la façon dont le cadre compétitif façonne le processus de création d'un spectacle. La fabrication d'Abenn Dimeurh est ensuite observée en détaillant les différentes étapes organisées par les chorégraphes : émergence du thème, collectage, présentation du projet aux danseurs, écriture chorégraphique. Cette observation met en lumière la façon dont les responsables de la Kevrenn Alré, pour faire aboutir leur projet artistique, doivent articuler un processus de création nettement ordonnancé et une organisation collective des activités. Au fil du processus sont engagées différentes formes de coopération qui montrent que les acteurs envisagent la notion du collectif et le travail en groupe autour d'une vision commune du sens de l'effort et de la responsabilité partagée. Il se dégage de l’analyse que la définition du travail artistique comme une activité collective est opératoire dans le contexte de la danse bretonne de spectacle en tenant compte des spécificités de l'univers associatif. Dans cet univers, les membres de la Kevrenn Alré s'efforcent de concilier le plaisir du partage et la réussite au concours. De ce constat émerge que le processus de création marque la production de son empreinte en engendrant un spectacle qui exprime leur vision de la culture bretonne. / This thesis focuses on the process of choreographic creation of a folk dance performance in Brittany. It is based on fieldwork conducted in Kevrenn Alré, a Breton music and dance ensemble based in Auray in Morbihan, from November 2010 to November 2012. Like most Breton groups, Kevrenn Alré create their show to compete in the annual contest organized by the folk dance organization to which they belong. The research analyses the collective activities and modes of production implemented during the creation of the performance Abenn dimeurh on the theme of the preparations for a wedding in the Auray region around 1900.The ethnographic description of a dance contest and the analysis of Kevrenn Alré's internal dynamics first allow us to understand the group's relationship to its socio-cultural environment and to examine how the competitive framework shapes the creative process of a show. The making of Abenn Dimeurh is then observed by investigating the various steps organized by the choreographers: finding the theme, collecting data, presenting the project to the dancers, making and staging the choreographic score. This observation highlights the way Kevrenn Alré's leaders, in order to carry out their artistic project, must articulate a clearly organized creative process and a collective organization of activities. Throughout the process, various forms of cooperation are initiated, showing that the actors consider the notion of being and working together around a common vision of joint endeavour and shared responsibilities. The analysis shows that the definition of artistic work as a collective activity is operative in the context of Breton folk dance performance, taking into account the specificities of voluntary associations. In this environment, the members of Kevrenn Alré struggle to bring together the pleasure of shared activities and success in the contest. From all this, it emerges that the creative process leaves its imprint on the production by generating a performance that expresses their vision of Breton culture.

<em>[X]splaininggender</em>, race, class, and body: Metapragmatic disputes of linguistic authority and ideologies on Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr

This study investigates the language of “citizen sociolinguists,” everyday users of social network sites (SNS) who contribute to the discourses about language on Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr, platforms with distinctive user demographics and technological affordances. The data were collected through keyword searches for mansplain, whitesplain, richsplain and thinsplain, metapragmatic neologisms which are lexical blends of the verb explain and one of four social categories. Disputes of macro-level ideologies are revealed by users’ creative meaning-making strategies and metapragmatic awareness of micro-level texts and utterances. Making use of the linguistic practices of the SNS, as well as the concisely-compacted semantic and pragmatic meanings of the four splain words, users come to evaluate communicative dynamics between speakers who differ from or relate with others in their experiences of sex, skin color, economic status, and physical form. Drawing on elements of Citizen Sociolinguistics (Rymes & Leone, 2014) with Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1989) and Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (Herring, 2004), I question how users make metapragmatic judgements to convey varying meanings of the four focal words, and how the uses of [x]splain and the surrounding discourses illuminate socio-ideological values about language, about its intersection with gender, race, class, and body size, and the authority to speak on topics that are macro-contextually situated in discourses of privilege, power, and inequality. Lastly, I compare the findings across the three SNS platforms to understand how competing discourses differ in relation to each site’s user demographics, technological affordances and limitations, and subsequent linguistic practices.

Transgressing Sexuality: An Interdisciplinary Study of Economic History, Anthropology, and Queer Theory

This interdisciplinary thesis examines the concept of sexuality through lenses provided by economic history, anthropology, and queer theory. A close reading reveals historical parallels from the late 1800s between concepts of a desiring, utility-maximizing economic subject on the one hand, and a desiring, carnally decisive sexological subject on the other. Social constructionists have persuasively argued that social and economic elites deploy the discourse of sexuality as a technique of discipline and social control in class- and gender-based struggles. Although prior scholarship discusses how contemporary ideas of sexuality reflect this origin, many anthropologists and queer theorists continue to use "sexuality" uncritically when crafting local, material accounts of sex, pleasure, affection, intimacy, and human agency. In this thesis, I show that other economic, political, and intellectual pathways emerge when sexuality is deliberately dis-ordered. I argued that contemporary research aspires to formulate new ideas about bodies and pleasures. It fails to do so adequately when relying on sexuality as a master narrative.

Being Human, Being Church: The Significance of Theological Anthropology for Ecclesiology

<p>One's conception of human personhood deeply impacts one's understanding and practice of community. Contemporary culture lacks precision and agreement in defining the human person. Such ·anthropological agnosticism· also affects the church. leading to devastating consequences concerning its inner sociality. cultural engagement, and pursuit of justice. This dissertation argues that a significant step forward is to gain a better understanding of theological anthropology and apply it consistently to ecclesiology. Specifically. a theological understanding of the human person as a relational. rational. and eschatological creature leads to a conception of the church as relational. rational, and eschatological communities of the new humanity. This approach overcomes problematic dualisms and false dichotomies presently plaguing the church's inner life and outward mission, in part by accentuating the ethical dimension that pervades its whole existence. Primary conversation partners include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Miroslav Volf. and Stanley Grenz. Alasdair Macintyre and Wolthart Pannenberg are also influential.</p> <p>Part I consists of two chapters. Chapter one explores the difficulties of defining the human person in contemporary culture and the resulting consequences for community and ethics. Chapter two analyzes six typological ways of construing community based IV upon conflicting views of the human person. It evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of each, concluding that none is fully satisfying theologically. Part II (chapters 3-5) constructs a theological anthropology in trinitarian perspective. It presents a threedimensional view of the human person as: a relational creature whose telos is to love God and fellow human beings; a rational creature whose telos is to know God and understand God"s world; and an eschatological creature whose telos is to serve God as a stewardpriest of (new) creation. Part III (chapters 6-8) constructs an ecclesiology corresponding to the themes developed in Part II. depicting the church as relational, rational, and eschatological communities of the new humanity defined and oriented by love. faith. and hope. The concluding chapter summarizes the arguments developed and their implications for Christian community and ethics.
