Indexicality and Code-switching: Examples from Two Mayors¡¦ Opening Speeches for Two International Sports Events

Lin, Hong-wei 19 August 2011 (has links)
The present study aims to redeem social indexical meanings of language choice and language alternation in the light of indexical order, a notion proposed by Silverstein (2003). Many researchers have agreed that language varieties are indexical of certain macro-social relations and that code-switching even within a speech event can also be socially meaningful. Nonetheless, some issues such as how the indexical associations have been formed and how the associations are dynamically transformed into indexical effects have been less extensively discussed. Based on the framework of indexical order, together with some code-switching approaches and concepts, this thesis examines two opening speeches made for two international sports events held in Taiwan. The two speeches were delivered by the mayors of the host cities. Each speech involved more than one language, including cases of both code-switching and crossing (Rampton, 1998). The notion of indexical order has helped unveil the dialectical nature of how the indexical meanings are produced in code-switching or language-choice practices. Besides, the analyses of this study will demonstrate how the framework of indexical order may enrich the code-switching approaches and general code-switching studies.

In this research, we intend to study it from a language studies perspective, more specifically, from the field of study of the metapragmatics of the language in use. For that, through a digital ethnographic approach, we chose a YouTube humour channel directed to the gay public, named Põe na Roda. It was selected all videos in which the gay closet appeared implicitly or explicitly published during the two first years of the channel, from April 04th of 2014 to April 24th of 2016. We can assert the gay closet is an important element in the entextualization processes which occur in the select videos. It presents metapragmatic functions and is central in metapragmatic discourses articulated to gender, and to the hierarchized binary “outside X inside”. The channel makes use of diverse semiotic resources to give support to indexicalization processes and metapragmatic discourses and evaluations, which try to present the gay closet as an uniform and simple set. Such strategies indicate a series of historical accruals that, besides helping to organize practices related to gay performances and identities, can be associated with determined forms of homosexual subjectivation, at the same time in which they reveal certain communicable cartographies about these processes of subjectivation and about what is possible to communicate concerning the gay closet in this specific context The argumentative line is, therefore, that indexicality and metapragmatic construal in these evaluations work to produce and communicate modes of being in the language and in sexuality. In this sense, production of gays subjectivities, rather, is, simultaneously, presupposed and projected in relations involving both being in the gay closet and coming out.

<em>[X]splaininggender</em>, race, class, and body: Metapragmatic disputes of linguistic authority and ideologies on Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr

Bridges, Judith C. 02 July 2019 (has links)
This study investigates the language of “citizen sociolinguists,” everyday users of social network sites (SNS) who contribute to the discourses about language on Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr, platforms with distinctive user demographics and technological affordances. The data were collected through keyword searches for mansplain, whitesplain, richsplain and thinsplain, metapragmatic neologisms which are lexical blends of the verb explain and one of four social categories. Disputes of macro-level ideologies are revealed by users’ creative meaning-making strategies and metapragmatic awareness of micro-level texts and utterances. Making use of the linguistic practices of the SNS, as well as the concisely-compacted semantic and pragmatic meanings of the four splain words, users come to evaluate communicative dynamics between speakers who differ from or relate with others in their experiences of sex, skin color, economic status, and physical form. Drawing on elements of Citizen Sociolinguistics (Rymes & Leone, 2014) with Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1989) and Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (Herring, 2004), I question how users make metapragmatic judgements to convey varying meanings of the four focal words, and how the uses of [x]splain and the surrounding discourses illuminate socio-ideological values about language, about its intersection with gender, race, class, and body size, and the authority to speak on topics that are macro-contextually situated in discourses of privilege, power, and inequality. Lastly, I compare the findings across the three SNS platforms to understand how competing discourses differ in relation to each site’s user demographics, technological affordances and limitations, and subsequent linguistic practices.

This research aims to identify the linguistic ideologies built in media public texts about More Doctors for Brazil Program migrants in Brazil and to relate the metapragmatics and categories of difference to the discussion of the relation between linguistic ideologies and identity in discourses produced about skilled migrants and their linguistic practices. To achieve these purposes, studies about linguistic ideologies will be used, such as those developed by Kroskrity (2004; 2008) and Blommaert (2014), as well as theories about categories of difference, mainly inserted in Piscitelli (2008), and about metapragmatics, as in Signorini (2008) and Blommaert (2010). ln addition, it is necessary to approach and relate the concepts of communicapility and mediatization introduced by Briggs (2005, 2007, 2011) in order to make it possible to.:.,understand the process of mediation of the news communicated on/by the media. The proposed methodology for this study is qualitative and document-based, using the selection of public texts for an analytical approach. The corpus consists of multimodal Brazilian public texts, of wide and varied circu\ation, produced during the period of 2013-20,14, concerning More Doctors for Brazil Program. The analysis shows that: 1) the notions of scale and textual traffic are essential to understand the visual networks found in the texts about the More Doctors for Brazil Program; 2) metapragmatics is central to the functioning of Tumblr posts and 3) the issue of language in the More Doctors for Brazil Program context is pointed as thé main argu'ment attempting to invalidate the program, or even attempting to validate its negative evaluation. The conclusion therefore is that it is necessary to extrapolate the ideological projections held by the mediatization process from the mediated communicability, in order to understand and, even more, transform and/or update the movement of production and reproduction of dominant national identities widespread and assimilated through 1anguage and differentiation of bodies in qualified and planned miaration contexts, as it is the case of More Doctors for Brazil Proaram.

[en] RHYMING WITH THE OTHER: (META)PRAGMATICS IN/ABOUT FEMALE RAP BATTLES ON YOUTUBE / [pt] RIMANDO COM A OUTRIDADE: (META)PRAGMÁTICAS NAS/SOBRE BATALHAS DE RAP FEMININAS NO YOUTUBE

LUCAS FELIPE DE OLIVEIRA SANTIAGO 21 March 2022 (has links)
[en] The focus of the present study is female Rap Battles. It seeks to understand metapragmatics built in female Rap Battles on two YouTube channels. The research lies in the historical and social assumptions of Hip-hop, in which Rap Battles are inserted, as an environment of male hegemony. Its theoretical orientation is Contemporary Sociolinguistics, within the scope of Applied Linguistics, in interface with Linguistic Anthropology, Pragmatics and Philosophy of Language. Language is understood as performance of meanings. Concepts of performance, performativity, metapragmatics, indexicality, entextualization and scale are used. The methodology adopted is ethnography with the concept of onlineOffline mobility in a qualitative and interpretive view. The analyzed data point out that when battles are posted on YouTube, stabilized meanings suffer a process of rescaling and meaning productions. The word, as the central axis of the battles, is a mechanism for operating meanings in struggles that cross the experience of the MCs. Metapragmatics point to collective causes in a spiral fashion and bring other voices to the rhymes. The semiotic process in the MCs rhymes seeks to produce alliances between women in rap. Meanings are evaluated by the virtual audience in comments, which promotes a reflective construction on the scales. Thus, we could notice the productions of meaning in female Rap Battles work with orders of indexicality, in order to operate metapragmatics on both cultural practice and life. Meanings are intertwined by historical, political, social and cultural issues about black women, lesbians, parenthood, sexuality, harassment, representation and religion.

Authentic Language : Övdalsk, metapragmatic exchange and the margins of Sweden’s linguistic market

Karlander, David January 2017 (has links)
This compilation thesis engages with practices that in some way place stakes in the social existence of Övdalsk (also älvdalska, Elfdalian, Övdalian), a marginal form of Scandinavian used mainly in Sweden’s Älvdalen municipality. The practices at hand range from early 20th century descriptive dialectology and contemporary lay-linguistics to language advocacy and language political debate. The four studies focus on the logic by which such practices operate, on the historically produced visions that they bring into play, as well as on the symbolic effects that they have produced. Study I provides a zoomed-out account of the ordering of Övdalsk in Sweden’s linguistic market. Focusing on a relatively recent debate over the institutional regimentation of Övdalsk, it analyses the forms of agreement upon which the exchange in question has come to rest. The contention has mainly developed over the classification of Övdalsk, percolating in the question of whether Övdalsk ‘is’ a ‘language’ or a ‘dialect’. Analysing this debate, the study takes interest in the relationship between state power and metapragmatic exchange. Study II deals with the history of linguistic thought and research on Övdalsk. It analyses the genesis of some durable visions of the relationship between Övdalsk and linguistic authenticity, focusing on the research practice of the Swedish dialectologist Lars Levander (1883–1950), whose work on Övdalsk commands representative authority to this day. By engaging with Levander’s techniques of scholarly objectivation, as well as with their language theoretical fundaments, the study seeks to create some perspectives on, and distance to, the canonical representations of Övdalsk that have precipitated from Levander’s research. Study III looks into the reuse and reordering of such representations. It provides an ethnographic account of a metapragmatically saturated exchange over Övdalsk grammar, in which descriptivist artefacts play an important part. Through an analysis of texts, in situ interaction, and interviews, the study seeks to grasp the ways in which textual renditions of grammar interrelate with practically sustained, socially recognized models of language and language use (i.e. registers). Study IV tracks the ways in which such visions of authenticity have been drawn into institutionally and politically invested metapragmatic exchanges. It looks into a process of naming of roads in Älvdalen, in which ideas about the contrast between Swedish and Övdalsk played a central part. In all studies, various visions of Övdalsk authenticity and authentic Övdalsk constitute a central theme. The thesis maintains that such visions must be understood in relation to the practices in which they hold currency. Following Silverstein, this epistemological stance entails an engagement with the dialectic between historical formations and situated exchange. Through this analytical orientation, the studies seek to account for the visions of authenticity that have been at the forefront of various symbolic struggles over Övdalsk. Thus, in addition to their respective analytical accounts, the separate studies seek to add shifting temporal horizons to the superordinate heuristic, combining a deep historical backdrop with accounts of protracted institutional processes and analyses of situated linguistic interaction. Ultimately, this mode of analysis provides an in-depth understanding of the object of inquiry. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted.</p>

Los aspectos pragmáticos en manuales suecos de español como lengua extranjera : Su contribución al desarrollo de la competencia pragmática en el bachillerato / Pragmatic aspects in Swedish textbooks for Spanish as a foreign language : Their contribution in the upper secondary school to learners’ development of a pragmatic competence in Spanish

De Matos Lundström, Anna January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to try to determine to what extent and in what way four Swedish textbooks on Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) treat pragmatic aspects, as well as to evaluate the potential and relevance of the metapragmatic information and activities related to pragmatic aspects provided by the textbooks, for the development of pragmatic awareness and competence in Spanish. This study parts from the notion of pragmatic competence as a skill of knowing how to create and understand meanings in interaction effectively (Thomas, 1995), which in intercultural interaction probably requires extra-linguistic knowledge more than language skills (cf. Bravo, 2005). The hypothesis postulated at the beginning of the study was that the manuals would not fully explain why certain language is being used in certain contexts, that the pragmatic content would be scarcely varied and rather difficult to assimilate and that the exercises would not be designed primarily to develop a pragmatic competence. To some extent it can be said that the hypothesis is confirmed: the manuals could have been more comprehensive in terms of the topics covered, they could also have varied and explained those issues further. Despite the fact that there seems to be an effort to incorporate extra-linguistic information and communicative activities, the results indicate that there is a lack of emphasis on or progression on how to treat these issues. For example, there are no didactic models or suggestions in the teacher’s guide, nor is additional information provided elsewhere; usually the metapragmatic information is not combined with any activities, and the activities that aim to develop communicative skills are not combined with further metapragmatic information.
