A Philosophical Perspective of Art

Hopp, Larry F. 05 1900 (has links)
The underlying problem of the thesis is elucidating the relationship between the art object and philosophy. The thesis is organized into an introduction and four chapters. The introduction poses the need for a philosophical approach to the art object, and the phenomological method is briefly described. The first chapter defines and describes two basic structures found in the art object. The second chapter probes into the ontological structure of the art object in terms of form and media. The third chapter focuses on the relation of form and media evident in personal art works. The fourth chapter summarizes the content of preceding chapters and describes the relationship between the art object and the phenomological method, and discusses the significance of this relationship to philosophy and mankind.

In particular, the thesis focuses on the relation to the divine and the concept of the ideal beauty. This work's goal is to state, by comparing philosophy and visual arts, whether philosophical thinking has always corresponded with visual arts; and how much they have influenced each other. Keywords The relationship of art and philosophy, ancient Greece, God, beauty, movement.

Affinity to infinity : the endlessness, correalism, and galaxies of Frederick Kiesler

Wilk, Michael. January 1999 (has links)
Frederick Kiesler's Endless House was a response to the principles of functionalism that dominated architectural theory during his lifetime. The house was developed from his philosophy of correalism and his galaxial art. Correalism explains his understanding of the universe as correlating proposing an integration of technology into architecture, and galaxial art is a method for producing art based upon his idea of art as ritual. Kiesler attempted to apply his new awareness to the Endless House design. In many ways, he was successful in uniting theory and design, but the house was never built. While highlighting the work's deficiencies this fact distracts his critics causing them to overlook his actual accomplishments.

Metaphoric Truth: Seeing and Saying in Merleau-Ponty and Ricoeur, and a Broader Ethics Via Zuidervaart

Read, Janet January 2010 (has links)
Artistic meaning via visual art and literary fiction is debated in modern aesthetic thought. Language is a cognitive component in postmodernist aesthetic projects. This thesis investigates Maurice Merleau-Ponty's and Paul Ricoeur's writings on painting and language, respectively, whose phenomenological aim is the revelation of being in works of the imagination in tandem with Lambert Zuidervaart's approach to artistic truth which opens the lifeworld to the biotic context of the earth. For him, imaginative disclosure is integral to techno-scientific and art realms. Embodiment, natality, and expression illuminate the problematic of meaning in forms of postmodern visual art. Metaphoric imagination and metaphor are used for metaphor is a principle of articulation, not a figure of speech. Aesthetic projects connect with the lifeworld in a hermeneutic circle of meaning.

This study aims to investigate the curricular dimension of the discipline of Philosophy throughout history, as well as the potential of the object of Art and its formative character in Philosophy. The understanding of Art as a communicative, perceptive and reflexive resource in the educational process in Philosophy is emphasized as presupposing in this dimension, being this one conceived in a dialogical way and having the teacher as an important mediator of that process. In this bias, the hypothesis is assumed that the treatment given to the object of Art in the classroom can exceed the usual sense of illustration or sensitization and characterizes the teaching of Philosophy supported in the interlocution of knowledge. The reflections developed on the meaning of Art in the teaching of Philosophy, have repercussions on an exploratory process on the role of didactic book in the process of interlocution of knowledge. The investigations were carried out having as object the didactic book Filosofia: experiência do pensamento (2014), since it contains subsidies for a critical reading on the interlocution between Art and Philosophy, given its differentiated structure in the presentation of the philosophical problems that brings a considerable number of pieces of Art used in the formative process in Philosophy. The analysis has as premise that the didactic material reflects educational intentionalities and it i still an instrument that subsidizes teaching practices. Finally, the research recognizes the place of aesthetics as a language that provides knowledge through art, not only restricted to the contemplation or apprehension of beauty, but rather as an important element in the process of building philosophical knowledge / A presente pesquisa tem como foco central o ensino de Filosofia em interlocução com a Arte.

Within words, without words

Hartigan, Patrick, Art, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
This paper centres in and around words. I have incorporated words into my recent work in a variety of ways including drawing, Letraset, sound and fiction writing. The philosophical questions which arise through any use of language and the various ways of adopting these questions and words within a 'visual art' context is considered in a number of ways. These include The Voyager Interstellar Space Mission which was humankind's first attempt to communicate with other hypothesized populations, conceptual word-incorporating artists, writers of fiction and philosophers within whose work can readily be found an extreme vigilance towards language. Alongside this word exploration I will consider other processes through which I've made and continue to make, works of art. These processes include drawing and film/video. My drawings (which sometimes include words) will be addressed in terms of a crossover between the drawn line and words found in Raymond Carver's story Cathedral. This story made me think about what it means to 'be led' by somebody and how I'm led (by myself or perhaps those mysterious 'populations' the Voyager team of thinkers had in mind) when drawing. It also marks an interesting point in my discussion of a state of being 'without words.' In addition to words an important focus in this paper are the windows through which I've spent a lot of 'my life' looking at 'life pass by' (which are in many ways a physical reality corresponding to the metaphorical 'frame of language'). The time I've spent looking out windows over the past few years has resulted in. several film and video pieces in addition to my latest work (presented as the appendix of this paper) which comprises of a series of short stories. The paper opens with a quote by German philosopher Martin Heidegger: "Language is the house of Being. In its home man dwells." The enigmatic broadness of this statement is appropriate to the apprehensive and cautious attitude towards words found throughout the paper (also it mentions 'house' which immediately brings to my mind 'windows')

A ontologia da Geografia à luz da obra de arte : o embate Terra-mundo em "Out of Africa" / The ontology of Geography in light of the artwork : the strife Earth-world in "Out of Africa"

The dialogue between Geography and Philosophy and Geography and Art has launched possibilities to geographer to think about "What Geography means?" whose understanding has been carried through the construction of a ontology of geography. Such construction has involved a care with the basic concept of the geographicity to broaden its understanding when searching its ontological ground. The Art under a heideggerian perspective offers an approach to think the geographicity from the reflections around the origin of the work of art, that is, the strife Earth-world that give grounds for thinking the origin of the knowledge under a existential perspective so far as this strife occurs as the opening up a horizon of comprehension, that is, the world by the Earth¿s unveiling. In other words, it is the very existence as a relationship with the Earth that brings to the light the being opening a horizon of comprehension where the being can remain unveiled. In a way that the ground of the geographicity resides in an existencial movement of comprehension of the being. We explore such a ground from the geopoetics view having it as a methodological way to let the geographicity reveal itself in the work of art dealing with the ontological discussions from a poetical language, that is, that it speaks out the being. The comprehension of the geographicity from an ontological perspective constructed out of the comprehension of the origin of the work of art brings the epistemological reflections of Geography to the very original condition of the being, having it as the proper ground of the geographic knowledge. The ontology of Geography to the light of the work of art strengthens the existential ground of the geographic knowledge as it places clearly its essence, the geographicity. So, the Geography is an existential science / Mestrado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Mestra em Geografia
