Take a Deep Breath: How Yoga Postures and Breathing Techniques Can Impact PTSD Symptoms

Armington, Sophia E 01 January 2015 (has links)
Yoga postures (asana) and yoga breathing techniques (pranayama) could be an effective method of treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study investigates the importance of the style of yoga treatment (pranayama, asana, or both) and the frequency with which these interventions are conducted (two or five times per week). The participants in this study will be military personnel with diagnosed PTSD who are currently receiving CBT and pharmaceutical treatment. All participants will have their PTSD symptoms assessed before the study begins, and then once a week each of the 12 weeks of the study. Structured interviews will be administered to both participants and loved ones of participants before and after the study in order to verify construct validity. It is proposed that all groups will show improvement in all three styles (asana, pranayama, and both) over the span of 12 weeks and the groups that practice five times a week will improve more than groups that practice twice a week. Therefore, participants who practice both pranayama and asana twice a week will have the most decrease in PTSD symptoms.

Title: Pedagogy of Yoga Asanas in Relationship to the Public Health Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to describe selected forward bend asanas according to the literature, compare the performance and instructions given during lessons with our research. We would like to find out whether a student's health condition is being asked of and considered by the tutor and whether there is a connection between the education of the tutor and their ability to provide appropriate directions. Evaluation of the possibilities for the use of yoga in physiotherapy. Methods: It is descriptive research of theoretical and empirical character, where research, observation, guided interview and comparison of acquired data were used. Results: Among the chosen asanas we found discrepancies in literature research. There were discrepancies among the theoretical background of asanas and their pedagogy in yoga classes. Two thirds of tutors do not ask about an individual's health limitations. A connection between tutors' education in yoga and ability to provide appropriate directions during classes has been not confirmed nor was a connection between medical education in the tutor and their ability to lead quality class. 20% of classes included less than three forward bend asanas and there was a class with none. Cronología y conexiones: evidencias precerámicas de Asana

Aldenderfer, Mark 10 April 2018 (has links)
Chronology and Connections: Preceramic Evidences at Asana SiteWith its long and continuous history of occupation, the site of Asana has a unique body of information to offer for the study of the Archaic Period in the south-central Andes. In this paper, I explore two important themes: the chronological sequence of occupation at the site with specific regard to the ways in which phases are defined, and the evidence from the site that describes the connections Asana had throughout its occupation with other regions of the Andean world. In the latter I examine in detail projectile point style and the sources of obsidian and other lithic materials found at the site. There is strong evidence for connections to the central Andes, the Colca valley, and the northern Chilean valleys.

Palladino, Candida Fortunata 02 April 2009 (has links)
The aim of this work is to describe the methodology of Yoga and Tai Chi Chuan to build the actors theatrical piece while reporting the usage of these eastern techniques in exercises of improvisation. From tranquilising to transforming : How can yoga practices address systemic patterns of oppression in order to cultivate liberation?

Gobillot, Chloé January 2023 (has links)
This study is an exploration of the practices of yoga teachers whose approaches are inscribed in social justice. Indeed, it attempts to understand how they find cohesion between a complex and spiritual discipline and their commitment to participate in anti-oppression. Moreover, it looks at the ways they believe yoga can be used for collective liberation. It is autoethnographical, and is based on semi-qualitative interviews which are then analysed thematically. Furthermore, it is analytically framed within theories of intersectionality, affective knowledge and teaching, solidarity and language, and critical future and utopian studies. The analysis then focuses on the teachers’ understanding of yogic practices andphilosophies before unveiling the ways they address and/or avoid issues of oppression and looking at the ways they envision yoga as a tool for collective liberation.
