Using computers to facilitate formative assessment of open-ended written assignments : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Zhang, Jun January 2005 (has links)
This thesis presents an e-learning solution to facilitate formative assessment of electronically submitted open-ended written assignments. It is widely accepted that formative assessment is highly beneficial to student leaning. A number of researchers are active in developing specialized approaches and software systems for assisting formative assessment of student work. However, no comprehensive e-learning solution exists for facilitating formative assessment of students' open-ended written work. The project presented in this thesis has developed a new approach for using computers to facilitate formative assessment of electronically submitted open-ended written assignments.Based on the literature review of the education theories around formative assessment and current computer software technologies, this project has developed three principles for e-learning support for formative assessment of open-ended written assignments:1. It needs to facilitate all the activities that are potentially required for formative assessment of student assignments (for example, the creation of assessment criteria, the submission of assignments, and the analysis of the assessment results), not only the marking activity to create feedback on assignments.2. It needs to provide an onscreen marking tool which enables human markers to mark open-ended written assignments in an intuitive and efficient way by replicating their paper-based assessment approaches.3. It needs to provide a generic solution for facilitating formative assessment of open-ended written assignments from all disciplines, not a limited solution restricted to some specific domains (for example, computers science or business courses).Based on these principles, a specification of an e-learning system for facilitating formative assessment of open-ended written assignment was developed and a system was implemented accordingly. This system, called the Written Assignment Assessment (WAA) system, has been already used in the assignment marking of several courses at Massey University.

What did they cover? : a cluster analysis of news stories published in the Botswana Daily News, January – December 2004

Mogotsi, Isaac Carter 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study, a cluster analysis of news stories published in the Botswana Daily News during the period January - December 2004 was undertaken. The study was exploratory in nature and sought to find out what topics were predominant during the study period. The approach we adopted can be divided into three phases, namely data collection, document pre-processing, and cluster analysis. The data used in the study was downloaded from the Botswana Daily News website using a simple program developed specifically for that purpose. Document pre-processing was concerned with transforming the raw documents into a format that could be directly operated upon by the various clustering algorithms. The documents themselves were represented using the vector space model, with the tf.idf term weighting scheme. We experimented with three clustering approaches, namely, direct k-way clustering, k-way clustering through repeated bisections, and agglomerative clustering. Agglomerative clustering performed poorly, and we thus discarded its results. Direct k-way clustering and k-way clustering through repeated bisections produced similar results, though the former performed better in terms of external isolation and internal cohesion of the clusters produced. Consequently, we only retained the results from direct k-way clustering, and subsequently performed a quarterly analysis of our corpus using only the direct k-way clustering algorithm. Analysis of the complete corpus identified a number of topics that were prevalent over the study period. Interestingly, a quarterly analysis of the corpus revealed other topics whose prevalence appears to have been limited to certain parts of the year.

Mentoring as a knowledge management tool in organisations

Mavuso, Michael Abby 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Mentoring programmes have been implemented in organisations to manage succession planning and talent management; to make sure that there are enough resources (people) to take over some tasks when employees in those positions retire or leave the organisation for greener pastures. Mentoring programmes have also been implemented to minimize the call back of retired employees to the organisation at an exorbitant salary to transfer the knowledge that should have been transferred while they where still employees of the organisation. The number one problem facing organisations these days is talent management and global brain drain. Organisations are continuously faced with challenges of how they are going to make sure that their intellectual capital and knowledge remain in their organisational structures and not lost to competitors outside. Organisations have tried many tools to enhance knowledge sharing and transfer, however very little research has been done to look at mentoring as another form to share and transfer knowledge within the structures of organisations. This study aims to look at mentoring and the role it plays in knowledge management as a tool to share and transfer knowledge. It will also pursue to understand the term mentoring, how it differs or is similar to coaching and other related terms. It will also look at how organisations can go about implementing and running mentoring programmes. The research will follow a methodology of literature review from various primary and secondary sources, to ascertain what has been written on mentoring in general, as well as more specifically literature on the relationship between mentoring and knowledge management and its use in organisations. It will also look at local and international firms which have implemented mentoring programmes and how they have succeeded in managing and transferring knowledge between experienced and less experienced employees. It will also look at types of mentoring that the organisation may consider implementing in respective structures. Roles and responsibilities of various parties in the mentoring programme will also be discussed briefly. It has been proven in this research that little has been written and researched on mentoring and knowledge management. Even companies mentioned in this research, their mentoring programmes didn’t have a knowledge management flavour in it; they looked more at succession planning and the human resource factor of mentoring. South Africa as a country as well is still lagging behind with regard to mentoring; it is only in 2006 that an association of mentoring and coaching was introduced, which hopes to look at implementing country-wide standards and ethics. United States of America and United Kingdom are well developed and far ahead with mentoring in general as well as within organisations. Seeing that little has been written on the concept of mentoring and knowledge management, this research concludes that more research need to be conducted to understand and look at the relationship and value of mentoring in knowledge management. It also recommends further research on e-mentoring. The research also recommends that mentoring should be included in performance agreements of experienced employees.

Turning up the heat : an analysis of the historic, scientific and socio-political complexities influencing climate change reporting in the modern newsroom

Joubert, Leonie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Global climate change is the result of the natural greenhouse effect being enhanced or augmented by human activities such as industrial burning of fossil fuels and large-scale agricultural practices which have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The result – the first truly globalised consequence of pollution – is arguably one of the most pressing matters facing the future of the human species. Journalists reporting on the subject have considerable responsibility to unravel the science and present it accurately and responsibly to the public, so that the latter can make informed decisions about individual energy consumption, informed decisions at the voting poll and go further to put the necessary pressure on policy makers. However climate change is without doubt the most complex story environmental and science reporters have ever encountered, not only because it encompasses so many different fields of natural sciences (oceanography, climatology, biological sciences including flora and fauna, hydrology, horticulture etc.), but because it all too often spills over into the political, economic and social arenas. “Climate change is a difficult story to recreate… (it) is one of the most complicated stories of our time. It involves abstract and probabilistic science, labyrinthine laws, grandstanding politicians, speculative economics and the complex interplay of individuals and societies” (Wilson, 2000: 206). Specialist environmental and science news reporters only have three and a half decades of experience and history, since this is one of the more recent journalistic beats to be assigned to modern newsrooms. Such writers face a particularly challenging job of reporting the complex and growing science of global climate change. Furthermore they must do so in an environment where politicians and environmental activists feed journalists sometimes conflicting information, each with its own agenda. Increasing consumer demand for entertainment in place of information may also complicate the telling of these stories, given the financial imperative to sell newspapers. Furthermore, the “global warming story is also affected by a number of journalistic constraints, such as deadlines, space, one-source stories, complexity and reporter education” (Wilson, 2000: 206). The complexities of news values also shape the stories which finally are released to the news consuming public.

Healthcare right in Brazil was conquered through struggling and demands from the working class for better life conditions. The creation of the Unified Health System (SUS) in the Federal Constitution of 1988 was a landmark to the population, by granting the healthcare as a universal right and a State’s responsibility. In view of the setbacks on social rights, due to the advance of neoliberalism in the 1990’s, the social assistant’s work on healthcare social policies is stressed with challenges of several natures, either as a social drive of its daily routine of work or on its condition as a worker. The research adopts as premises that the Social Service in the Santa Casa of Franca/SP contributes effectively to the access of healthcare right, even with all the limitations involved, the profession has moved significantly forward in this occupational space. Therefore, the research has as a general objective to study healthcare policies and the contribution of the social assistant’s work to the effectiveness of the healthcare right in the Santa Casa of Franca/SP. As a specific objectives, to reflect healthcare right having as reference the attributions of the social assistant in field, to evidence main demands of the Social Service and to state how the category presents qualified answers to such demands. The results collected state that the institutional demands are complex, demanding a professional increasingly critic, propositional and inventive, able to reflect the social reality of the subjects addressed and to give qualified answers to social and healthcare issues. It is considered that an ethical and political positioning in defense of the healthcare right’s affirmation contributes for universal access of SUS’ users and creates possibilities for a social transformation toward a fairer and more egalitarian society, as presented by the Social Service in the Santa Casa of Franca/SP. / CAPES -1617827

Sequenciamento de tarefas em sistemas de pintura balizado por heurísticas do tipo ATC (Apparent Tardiness Cost)

Noal, Lúcio Cantarelli January 2015 (has links)
The competitive industrial scenarios required companies to improve efficiency, flexibility and quality of production systems (RON, 1998). In this context, job scheduling is deemed important to support planning and control of manufacturing systems. This dissertation addresses the scheduling problem in painting systems where setups depend on the job sequence. The first paper proposes an approach to release batches aimed at minimizing the sum of setup and painting costs. The released lots are scheduled using the Apparent Tardiness Cost (ATC) and Apparent Tardiness Cost with Setups (ATCS) rules. When applied to a painting process, the proposed approach increased efficiency measured by the Overall Equipment Effectiveness 32.84%. The second article proposes a modification to the ATCS rule by including a quality related parameter. This parameter is tailored to reduce delivery delays due to quality problems. This new heuristic, when applied to the same painting process, increased the OEE 2.74%, the delivery accuracy 2.11% and the percentage of completed packages at the end of the painting process 8%.

Utvärdering och utveckling av Fiskarhedens Trävaru AB:s traktdirektiv för slutavverkning / Evaluation and development of Fiskarhedens Trävaru AB's working instructions for final felling

Andersson, Björn January 2018 (has links)
Gross felling has accelerated in recent decades, and as a consequence, the requirements for forestry have increased. Today a comprehensive environmental consideration needs to be taken. This also imposes higher demands on the contractors. In order for contractors to be able to live up to the requirements, it is important that the customer of the service hands over a work instruction in connection to the removal of region assignments. This work instruction and work order is created in the form of a region directive. A qualitative region directive is considered important for Fiskarhedens Trävaru AB and for their contractors. A case study has been conducted to evaluate and describe the company's current region directive. The results show that the current region directive is sometimes inadequate due to that they are poorly completed. Important content is therefore not communicated as needed. A proposal of a new improved region directive, where the content is intended to be filled in better, has therefore been developed. With the help of this region directive, Fiskarheden can maintain sustainable forestry.
