Being (Almost) a Mathematician: Teacher Identity Formation in Post-Secondary Mathematics

Within the field of mathematics teacher education, mathematics graduate students have recently become subjects of investigation. While research in this area tends to focus on future schoolteachers, little has been done to examine prospective university teachers of mathematics and their understanding of its teaching and learning. As a result, the experiences of mathematics graduate students and the development of their teaching practices are not well understood. Almost seventy-five percent of mathematics PhDs will become professors at post-secondary institutions dedicated to undergraduate education. Since much of their careers will be spent in the classroom, attending to the manner in which mathematics graduate students develop their teaching practices is important in understanding how they are shaped for their future profession. The purpose of this research project was to uncover issues and difficulties that arise as mathematics graduate students develop their views of their possible future roles as university teachers of mathematics. Over a six-month period, conversations were held with six mathematics graduate students exploring their experiences of and perspectives on mathematics teaching. Using hermeneutic inquiry and thematic analysis, the conversations were analysed and interpreted with attention to themes and experiences that had the potential to influence the graduate students ideas about and approaches to the task of teaching. This dissertation also attends to notions of identity for mathematics graduate students, in particular their emerging identities as mathematicians and what being a mathematician in the world means to them, as well as their identities as future post-secondary teachers of mathematics. The structures and expectations of behaviour within their department of mathematics had implications for how the participants formed their identities as mathematicians and mathematics teachers. Lave and Wengers notion of legitimate peripheral participation is explored with regard to the meta-themes that came through the analysis. These meta-themes are: replication where university mathematics teacher identity and classroom practices became a process of replication; resignation the research participants felt resigned to one particular way of being in mathematics and of mathematics teaching; and despondence the participants were beginning to lose their excitement about becoming post-secondary teachers of mathematics.

In all times school has defined and categorized pupils from a hypothetical normality. The National Agency for Education is today critical to how the municipalities provide for the necessity of special support for pupils with difficulties in school. Pupil`s assistants has been a growing profession in school during the last decade and their importance for the pupils is relatively unexplored. The aim of this study is to find out how the pupils think about having pupil`s assistant during the obligatory school on the basis of the ideas of power, knowledge, involvment and understanding. The study is based on qualitative interviews, consisting of half-structured questions, with eight pupils that have or have had pupil`s assistant during their time in senior compulsory school. The result notifies that the pupils feel powerless in school, they have no opportunity to affect and they do not think they are someone that could make any change. With the pupil`s assistant the pupils get an opportunity to affect and a feeling of recognition. The pupil thinks that the pupil`s assistant is a translator of the teachers instructions and someone who builds a bridge between teacher and pupil. There is a fear within the pupils to be different, to not belong. When the pupil`s assistance is given in the classroom the pupil think they belong more to the class than if the assistance is given outside the classroom. With assistance outside the classroom the pupil sees the pupil`s assistant more as a teacher.

A Verified Algorithm for Detecting Conflicts in XACML Access Control Rules

The goal of this thesis is to find provably correct methods for detecting conflicts between XACML rules. A conflict occurs when one rule permits a request and another denies that same request. As XACML deals with access control, we can help prevent unwanted access by verifying that it contains rules that do not have unintended conflicts. In order to help with this, we propose an algorithm to find these conflicts then use the Coq Proof Assistant to prove correctness of this algorithm. The algorithm takes a rule set specified in XACML and returns a list of pairs of indices denoting which rules conflict. It is then up to the policy writer to see if the conflicts are intended, or if they need modifying. Since we will prove that this algorithm is sound and complete, we can be assured that the list we obtain is complete and only contains true conflicts.

Teacher and teacher assistant perceptions of their relationship

This qualitative research study examined teachers and teacher assistants perceptions of their working relationships. Three teachers and three teacher assistants reflected specifically on their work experiences and interactions with their job partners in their respective schools, as they worked to provide supports to students with a variety of behavioral, academic and medical needs. Two main questions guided this research: How did each participant describe their working relationship with his/her job partner? What factors were perceived as influential on a positive and effective working relationship? <p>Thematic analysis of the qualitative interview data from the participants informed the generation of dominant themes. The role of administration, professional interaction, and personal attributes emerged as main factors influencing the teacher and teacher assistant relationship. The researcher provides a model for conceptualizing this relationship and suggests that professionalism is required of both parties in the relationship. The model of professionalism is supported by three main behaviors exhibited by people in the relationship: competence, collegiality, and clarity of role.

A Comparative Analysis of Work-Life Balance in Intercollegiate Athletic Graduate Assistants and Supervisors

The sport industry is a popular and competitive career field with employees drawn to work in a dynamic, yet often untraditional work environment. The challenge of achieving work-life balance has received considerable study in sport, as employees often find a conflict in balancing their job and other life responsibilities, such as family (work-family conflict) and outside activities. This study introduces a new area of potential conflict (work-extracurricular conflict), the outside activities that may be neglected due to a job, which may impact employees. This area may be especially pertinent to a younger segment of the industry which has not been studied, graduate assistants who work in athletic departments while continuing their education. The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess work-life balance in graduate assistants (GAs) and their supervisors by comparing their levels of work-family conflict, work-extracurricular conflict, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction. Secondly, the study introduced the work-extracurricular conflict construct. Data were collected from GAs and supervisors (N = 47) working in five Division I university athletic departments. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA revealed significant differences between GAs’ and supervisors’ job satisfaction, while determining they did not differ on work-family conflict, work-extracurricular conflict and life satisfaction levels. They reported moderate levels of family and extracurricular conflict. Sport managers can utilize this information to better understand the work-life balance of GAs and establish dialogue on ways to improve GAs experience in hopes of keeping these sport professionals in the industry long-term.

It makes no exceptions that the key learning method of these materials needs either parents or teachers¡¦ accompanies in order to teach Children to recognize alphabets and to pronounce tones, helping Children to learn alphabets. The research aims to assist Children to study English alphabets more effectively. The research methods consist of the following: to study through related documents in order to comprehend specialists¡¦ advises about children studies; to observe how the specialists using teaching methods to tutor children study alphabets; to realize users¡¦ requirements through interviews. Combining the three methods above, the researcher decides to use LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robots and accessories as teaching tools which are low cost, similar to LEGO cubes in appearance, and with easy replace accessories. Associate with PC to transmit information, the researcher designs an assisting studying system that can help children to recognize and study alphabets and tones without parents or teacher¡¦s accompanying. The research intends to provide the follow-through children assisted study system developers as a reference through this research and develop methods, in order to speed the time of development.

The Intentions of Florida Educational Leadership Graduate Students to Pursue Administrative Positions

This study examined the intentions of educational leadership students in Florida university graduate programs in regards to demographics and self-assessed leadership characteristics. The study employed a non-experimental design wherein Regression, ANOVA, and Multiple Regression statistical techniques were employed to explore intent. It examined the influences that self-assessed leadership behavior, gender, number of credits completed, and age had on respondent intentions as measured by the Leadership Practice Inventory and the Demographics and Intentions Questionnaire. The highest assessed priori sample size was 159 when power was set at 0.80, alpha was 0.05, and the expected effect size was set at .10. This study is important because it identified additional reasons administrative pools have perceived shortages of quality candidates using job choice theory as a frame of reference and identified. Results were made available in order to offer the Florida Department of Education, school district leadership academies, and university educational leadership departments valuable insight for reform of selection, recruitment, and retention.
