Controle emocional e cognitivo após treino de meditação da atenção focada

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar se o treino de meditação da atenção focada promoveria melhoras em variáveis emocionais e cognitivas. Foram realizadas duas intervenções de diferentes durações, as quais foram avaliadas antes e depois através de um paradigma experimental que permitiu analisar a interferência emocional e o controle cognitivo, assim como de medidas de autorrelato avaliando variáveis de ansiedade, afeto, dificuldades de regulação emocional e atenção concentrada. A primeira intervenção compreendeu um ensaio randomizado de seis semanas, com encontros semanais e com dois grupos controle - relaxamento progressivo e lista de espera. A segunda compreendeu um ensaio de cinco dias consecutivos, com apenas um grupo controle de lista de espera. Os resultados de ambas intervenções indicaram que a meditação da atenção focada pode ajudar na modulação da interferência emocional, no controle cognitivo, assim como na melhora de aspectos emocionais, tal como redução de ansiedade e afeto negativo, e melhora na atenção concentrada. Além disso, estes resultados foram superiores àqueles observados nos grupos controle. Ressalta-se que apesar de complementares, os achados da intervenção mais curta foram menos robustos, indicando que um treino curto já pode produzir mudanças, mas que estas ganham maior magnitude à medida que o tempo de prática aumenta. Discute-se o papel da interrelação entre as variáveis investigadas para a regulação emocional, sugerindo-se que a meditação pode ser caracterizada como um tipo particular de estratégia regulatória. / The present work aimed to evaluate whether a focused attention meditation training would promote enhancements in emotional and cognitive variables. Two interventions with distinct durations were carried out, which were evaluated before and afterwards through an experimental paradigm that allowed the analysis of emotion intereference and cognitive control, as well self-report measures assessing variables such as anxiety, affect, difficulties in emotion regulation, and concentrated attention. The first intervention comprised of a six-week randomized trial, with weekly meetings and two control groups - progressive relaxation and wait list control. The second comprised a five-consecutive-day randomized trial, with only a wait list control group. Results from both interventions indicated that focused attention meditation can help modulating emotion interference, enhance cognitive control, as well as improve emotional aspects, such as reducing anxiety, negative affect, and increasing concentrated attention. In addition, these findings were superior to those observed in the control groups. We highlight that despite being complementary, the results from the short intervention were less robust, indicating that a short-term training can already promote some changes, but that the extent of their magnitude seems to be related to the amount of practice. We discuss the role of the interrelationship between the investigated variables for emotion regulation, suggesting that meditation can be considered a particular type of regulatory strategy.

Neuroticism related differences during porcessing of controlled congnitive tasks

It is suggested that neuroticism impairs cognitive performance mostly in difficult tasks i.e. WM tasks, but not so much in easier tasks. However, behavioural, and functional neuroanatomical correlates of detrimental effect of neuroticism in relation to central executive system (CES) during cognitive tasks particularly in multitasking still unknown. I aim at investigating behavioural and functional neuroanatomical correlates of single- and dual-task performance in high and low neurotics. The general hypothesis is that high neurotics will show a poorer performance on processing of cognitive tasks as compared to low neurotics. From a screened population, I select low neurotics (below 6) and high neurotics (over 16) on 24 item Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) neuroticism scale. First empirical study was consisted of three standard WM tests. The result of this study showed that high neurotics had lower performance when the task heavily requires CES such as switching and inhibition. Next empirical studies were consisted of dual tasks based on PRP paradigm. In dual task studies, in addition to SOA manipulation SOA (0 and1000ms), task demand manipulated either by presentation of task order or task set maintenance. The results show that high neurotics considerably slower when SOA is short. Further, it has been observed dual task cost differences between high and low neurotics increase as the demand increase either by random tasks or task set maintenance as evident by lower processing efficiency in high neurotics. Also, high neurotics perceived higher stress level as the task demand increase. In the final study, I assessed brain activity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in low and high neurotics while they were performing a demanding dual-task and the less demanding component tasks as single-tasks. Imaging data showed that high neurotics showed less dual-task specific activation in lateral and medial prefrontal cortices. In conclusion, I conclude that high levels of neuroticism impair behavioural performance in demanding tasks with higher perceived stress level, and that this impairment is accompanied by reduced activation of the task-associated brain areas. Différences individuelles dans les processus de contrôle attentionnel chez des personnes jeunes et âgées : approches expérimentale et computationnelle / Individual differences in attentional control processes in people young and old : experimental and computational approaches

L’effet du vieillissement sur les fonctions cognitives de haut niveau demeure encore relativement incompris. Cette recherche vise à mieux comprendre les différences interindividuelles de performances entre les individus jeunes et âgés par l’étude des processus de contrôle attentionnel mis en jeu dans les tâches de commutation attentionnelle. Dans unpremier temps, deux tâches d’alternance de type séries alternées ont été administrées à des adultes jeunes et âgés. Les résultats n’indiquent pas d’effet de l’âge sur les coûts d’alternance mesurés mais en revanche un coût d’alternance symétrique (étude 1) et des coûts d’alternance locaux et globaux différents selon les individus (étude 1 et 2). Dans un second temps, un travail de modélisation du fonctionnement cognitif à l’aide de l’architecture cognitive ACT-R a été réalisé. Il permet de tester la plausibilité des hypothèses de diminution de la vitesse de traitement (VT) et de diminution de la capacité de la mémoire de travail (CMT), à pouvoir reproduire les différences de performances entre jeunes et âgés. Lesrésultats des tests d’hypothèse pour les deux études réalisées indiquent que ces hypothèses ne reproduisent pas assez les effets empiriquement observés ce qui suppose que les hypothèses de diminution de la VT ou de la CMT sont insuffisantes pour expliquer les différences de performances individuelles observées. Cette étude met en évidence l’intérêt de la modélisation cognitive computationnelle dans la compréhension des processus sous-jacent le fonctionnement cognitif humain / The effect of aging on high level cognitive functions is still relatively misunderstood. The aim of this research is to better understand individual performance differences between young and elderly individuals, by studying the attentional control processes involved in task switching. Initially, two switching tasks were administered to young and elderly adults. The results indicate no age effect on the switching cost but show an asymmetric switching cost (Study 1) and differentlocal and global switching costs between individuals (study 1 and 2). In a second step, a computational cognitive modeling of cognitive functioning is built using the ACT-R architecture. It enables to test the veracity of the assumptions of reduced processing speed (VT) and reduced capacity of working memory (WCL), to reproduce the observed performance differences between young and old individuals. The results of the hypothesis tests for both studies indicate that these assumptions do not reproduce adequately the empirically observed effects, which implies that the assumptions of decreased VT or CMT are insufficient to explain the individual performance differences observed. This study highlights the interest of computational cognitive modeling in the understanding of the processes underlying human cognitive functioning

The aim of the study was to investigate the association between working memory capacity and golf performance in a dual-task paradigm. Twenty-eight golfers with ages varying from 19-58 participated in the study. The participants were instructed to, after assessing their working memory capacity with digit span tests, hit ten golf putts from varying distances in two different conditions, one single-task condition (just performing the golf putts) and one dual-task condition (golf putts plus a working memory task). In the dual-task condition the participants were given an address (including street name, postal code and city) to remember while hitting all ten putts. After hitting the putts in each condition the participants reported their perceived mental effort. Results from the study showed that participants with higher working memory capacity performed better than participants with lower working memory capacity in general, but especially in the distracted condition. Results also showed that participants with higher working memory capacity perceived less mental effort compared to participants with lower working memory capacity, especially in the distracted condition. The findings from this study indicate that working memory capacity is related to performance and mental effort exerted during performance, especially in a distracted condition.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of attentional focus on football performance. 20 junior elite football players participated in a repeated measure experiment where the effects of external focus and internal focus (compared to a control condition with no instructions regarding attentional focus) in a football related performance was investigated. The participants got to do an obstacle course three times, one with no instructions regarding focus of attention, one with internal focus and one with external focus. Significant effect of focus was found in two out of three dependent variables, passing points and cone touches, but no effect on time taken to finish the obstacle course. The participants got more points in passing and touched less cones in the obstacle course when having an external focus (with medium to strong effect sizes) compared to both internal focus and no instructions regarding focus. There were no differences in performance between internal focus and no instructions. The result in this study indicates that having external focus could enhance performance for junior elite football players, even though more research is needed on the subject for senior football players.

The Development and Validation of a New Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the past research that has been conducted to date on pre-shot routines in golf via a thorough review of the literature. A historical review is presented in a chronological order of research studies that have been conducted pertaining to pre-shot routines in golf over the last 40 years. From this review, the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf was developed and assessed amongst college golf coaches in the United States. A total of 36 college golf coaches working at the NCAA Division I level participated in a two-round Delphi study to validate the usefulness and future utility of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf. The usefulness of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf was validated by achieving a 72.73% consensus agreement level amongst study participants. The researchers were unable to reach adequate levels of expert consensus amongst college golf coaches working at the NCAA Division I level pertaining to the future utility of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf in their golf instruction. However, it was found that future utilization rates of the model may increase if the designer of the model were to provide educational sessions to college golf coaches and members of their college golf team. Practitioners and researchers are encouraged to further examine the efficacy and future adoption rates of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf amongst golfers of all ability levels. In addition, a study examining the real adoption and utilization rates of college golf coaches working at the Division I level is encouraged upon the completion of face-to-face educational sessions by a researcher who has expertise in the area of pre-shot routines in golf.

Understanding shooting bias using a dual mechanisms of control framework

Deciding to use lethal force with a firearm is a critical decision that has major implications within society. In order to investigate racial bias in shooting decisions, the current dissertation uses the First-Person Shooter Task (FPST). Previous literature has shown that shooting decisions in this task are made faster and more often towards Black targets when compared to White targets. The relationship between this shooting bias and individual differences in cognitive ability is explored. The FPST was presented in three different conditions, each with trial proportions that varied in level of stereotype congruency (i.e., trials that are congruent with racial stereotypes). A Baseline condition presented an even distribution of Black Armed, Black Unarmed, White Armed, and White unarmed targets. A Mostly Congruent condition presented most (80%) of the Black targets as armed and most (80%) of the White targets as unarmed. A Mostly Incongruent condition presented most of the Black targets as unarmed and the White targets as mostly armed. Working memory, theoretically represented as a system of three separate components, was related to shooting behavior in these FPST conditions. The attentional control component of working memory was shown to be more related to shooting bias when compared to the capacity-related components, especially in the Mostly Incongruent condition (where most trials required making shooting decisions that go against racial stereotype). Study 2 used Confirmatory Factor Analysis to test whether attentional control ability was separate from proactive and reactive control strategy usage. Results showed that the attentional control ability was independent from which attentional control strategy was used. Finally, relating attentional control ability and attentional control strategies to shooting behavior, results showed that people with high attentional control and high proactive control usage were more likely to correctly adjust their expectations of threat in the Mostly Incongruent condition when compared to people with lower ability. People with low attentional control and high proactive control usage were more likely to adjust their expectations of threat based on racial stereotypes. Overall, these findings provide new insight into how cognitive ability interacts with shooting decisions in order to produce racial shooting bias.
