A qualitative exploration of children's experiences of role-play in two pack-away early childhood settings

Kingdon, Zenna Mary January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, I explored children’s experiences of role-play in relation to notions of self. The research took place in two pack-away settings in the Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) sector of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). The experiences of eight children, aged between three-year-three months and four-years one month, were investigated over a period of seven months. I used an adaptation of The Mosaic Approach (Clark and Moss 2001) combined with a reflective lenses approach (Brookfield 1995) to create a three-dimensional view of the children’s experiences. The children and I used a range of tools to gather data including digital cameras, conferencing, drawing and map-making. Children were conceptualised as agentic and capable of commenting on their lives and experiences (James et al 1998, Qvortrup 2004, Cosaro 2010). The findings revealed that children engage in Wave Play, a fluid form of role-play in which they move both props and ideas from space to space. Practitioners support the children in finding the necessary props and allowing them to move from one area of the setting to another. The children displayed positive self-esteem and effective social behaviours showing an awareness of themselves as social beings. They were confident that their needs will be met when they request support. In their role-play activities, they showed their understanding of themselves as integrated selves; beings, becomings and having beens (Cross 2011). Adults in pack-away settings can support children effectively by adopting a flexible pedagogical approach.

Coping With Capitalism: Monsters and the Spectre of Excess in Spirited Away, Onmyoji, and Tokyo Babylon

Lapointe, Catherine 14 February 2010 (has links)
This thesis is intended to illustrate that monsters, as beings made of pure culture, embody social anxieties and can be deployed as a means of protest. Therefore this thesis examines monsters in Japanese anime, manga, and film that embody the excesses of capitalism. The first chapter examines Spirited Away and how capitalism’s excesses create monsters such as over consumption, greed, and loss of identity through the disintegration of social relationships. The second chapter examines modern onmyoji and why they are different from their ancient counterpart, especially with regards to the commodification of women and the alienation of others. By examining the societal ills that have created monsters we can determine if these representatives of capitalist excess can be managed.

Identification of the Halloween Effect in Swedish Sectors

Lind, Oskar, Uddin, Md Rayhan January 2013 (has links)
Our thesis researches the Halloween effects in the Swedish stock market from a sector perspective. The notion Halloween effect refers to higher returns during the period November until April than the period May until October. The anomaly has been confirmed by previous researchers in Sweden among other countries. There has not been any definite explanation for this anomaly. The majority of explanations base on the assumption that the anomaly is a market wide and induced by changes in investment behavior. However, previous research has shown that the Halloween effect could be limited to certain sectors which experience significantly higher returns during winter months than the summer months. The sectors that exhibited the high Halloween effect tend to be heavy industry sectors while consumer oriented sectors tend to outperform during summer periods. In our study we research the Swedish sectors to test whether the findings of previous researches are true for other market as well. Our result indicates that the Halloween effect is present in a few sectors and not market wide. The findings thus support previous research that the Halloween effect is sector specific. The sectors that exhibited the highest Halloween effect were sectors in heavy industry.

Investigating The Role Of LBH During Early Embryonic Development In Xenopus Laevis

Weir, Emma 29 October 2019 (has links)
LBH is a highly conserved protein whose role during vertebrate development is relatively under-studied. In collaboration with the Albertson lab, our lab has previously shown that it is necessary for cranial neural crest cell migration in the zebrafish and in Xenopus laevis. The molecular mechanisms through which it acts are not well understood. In Xenopus, LBH is a maternally deposited protein. As such, studying its role in early development has not been feasible through the morpholino-mediated knockdown techniques that prevent translation of target genes. Recently, a technique for degrading endogenous proteins was developed, called Trim-Away. This was developed in mammalian systems and utilizes the E3 ubiquitin ligase Trim21 in conjunction with an antibody against a protein of interest in order to degrade the protein. In order to observe the effects of a knockdown of LBH during early embryonic development, we sought to modify the technique for use in Xenopus. We injected embryos with mRNA encoding the human form of trim21 along with a monoclonal antibody against LBH that our lab developed (2B8) and tracked degradation of the protein over time, monitoring embryos for any phenotypes arising during early development. Our results demonstrate that Trim-Away can be utilized in Xenopus. LBH depleted embryos display a variety of defects during gastrulation, the process by which the three germ layers are properly organized. These appear to be mainly due to defects in fibronectin fibrillogenesis and mesodermal migration.

Vision Imagery and Its Relationship to Structure in the Novels of Flannery O'Connor

Sanders, Diane 08 1900 (has links)
An investigation of the prominence of vision imagery in the two novels of Flannery O'Connor, Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away, reveals the importance of vision to the themes and structures of the novels. Seeing truth in order to fulfill one's human vocation is a central concern in O'Connor's fiction. The realization or non-realization of truth by the characters is conveyed by vision imagery. O'Connor's Southern and Catholic heritage is the back-ground of her concern for vision as an integral part of her artistic theory. An analysis of vision imagery in each novel shows how the themes are developed and how the structures relate to such imagery. Each novel progresses according to the main character's clarity of sight. Contradictory patterns occur when the character's sight is not true.

The efficiency of the markets or not is a matter that remains polemic by several academics and market professionals, in the sense that some studies suggest its effectiveness, and others show themselves against this idea. In this context, the aim of this work is to verify whether the Brazilian stock markets may be considered efficient in the weak form, as well as investigate the possibility of existence of market anomalies known as “Monday Effect” and “Sell in may and go away Effect”. In order to verify the market efficiency, we used Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) unit root tests. For the observation of Monday effect presence, we employed two procedures, namely: estimation of the regression coefficients using dummy variables and Wald test to investigate a possible statistical equality of the coefficients; and Anova F test and Kruskal-Wallis test to check for equality of means and medians, respectively. Regarding the calculation of Sell in may and go away effect, it was used only Anova F and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results suggest the market efficiency in the weak form, as well as the no identification of Monday effect. However, it was found the presence of Sell in may and go away effect for the assets CSNA3 and USIM5, according to the methodology proposed, that is, a favorable seasonality in the months from November to April for the respective assets which, in short, contradicts the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH).

Sell in may and go away : Effektens existens och utveckling på Stockholmsbörsen

Ahlström, Andreas, Löfgren, Johan January 2018 (has links)

Some Take-Away Games on Discrete Structures

Barnard, Kristen M. 01 January 2017 (has links)
The game of Subset Take-Away is an impartial combinatorial game posed by David Gale in 1974. The game can be played on various discrete structures, including but not limited to graphs, hypergraphs, polygonal complexes, and partially ordered sets. While a universal winning strategy has yet to be found, results have been found in certain cases. In 2003 R. Riehemann focused on Subset Take-Away on bipartite graphs and produced a complete game analysis by studying nim-values. In this work, we extend the notion of Take-Away on a bipartite graph to Take-Away on particular hypergraphs, namely oddly-uniform hypergraphs and evenly-uniform hypergraphs whose vertices satisfy a particular coloring condition. On both structures we provide a complete game analysis via nim-values. From here, we consider different discrete structures and slight variations of the rules for Take-Away to produce some interesting results. Under certain conditions, polygonal complexes exhibit a sequence of nim-values which are unbounded but have a well-behaved pattern. Under other conditions, the nim-value of a polygonal complex is bounded and predictable based on information about the complex itself. We introduce a Take-Away variant which we call “Take-As-Much-As-You-Want”, and we show that, again, nim-values can grow without bound, but fortunately they are very easily described for a given graph based on the total number of vertices and edges of the graph. Finally we consider Take-Away on a specific type of partially ordered set which we call a rank-complete poset. We have results, again via an analysis of nim-values, for Take-Away on a rank-complete poset for both ordinary play as well as misère play.

Romantic Elements in Selected Writings of Flannery O'Connor

Bradley, William J. 08 1900 (has links)
Certain characteristics generally attributed to the British Romantics can be seen in selected writings of Flannery O'Connor, a contemporary American author (1926-1964). Chapter I defines Romanticism and identifies the Romantic elements to be discussed in the paper. Chapter II discusses Gothicism, Primitivism, and the treatment of the child as they appear in five of O'Connor's short stories. Variations of the Byronic Hero are presented in Chapter III as they appear in two short stories and one novel, Wise Blood. The internal struggle and anti-intellectualism in The Violent Bear It Away are the basis of Chapter IV. Chapter V concludes that O'Connor's concern with man as master of his fate aligns her with the Romantics and thus illustrates the influence of Romanticism on contemporary life and art.
