O presente trabalho aborda análises de sistemas de propulsão e manobra para comboios fluviais, e seus efeitos na manobrabilidade dos comboios. Analisam-se o sistema de propulsão convencional (propulsor mais leme), o sistema azimutal e o equipamento de proa auxiliar combinado com cada um destes sistemas de propulsão. Apresenta-se a modelagem matemática dos sistemas de propulsão e manobra citados, os quais serviram de base para implementação de um simulador computacional utilizado para obtenção dos resultados desta dissertação. As forças e momentos hidrodinâmicos são obtidos através do método das derivadas hidrodinâmicas para as simulações próximas à velocidade de serviço do comboio, enquanto para simulações em baixa velocidade utilizou um método semi-empírico baseado no princípio de cross-flow. Inicialmente, efetuou-se a validação do simulador com resultados da literatura para o caso do comboio com propulsão convencional. Em seguida, o modelo foi adaptado para os demais tipos de sistemas de propulsão e manobra propostos. Os resultados obtidos mostram que há uma maior eficiência do sistema de propulsão azimutal e do equipamento na proa para manobras em baixas velocidades, o que se torna adequado sua aplicação em comboios fluvial, pois essas embarcações navegam em velocidades menores se comparadas a outros tipos de embarcações. / The present work deal with analysis of propulsion and maneuvering systems for pusher-barge system, and results on the maneuverability of convoys. It analyzes the conventional propulsion system (rudder plus propeller), the azimuth system and combined auxiliary equipment bow with each of these propulsion systems. Presents the mathematical modeling of propulsion and maneuvering systems mentioned, which served as the basis for implementation of a computational simulator used to obtain the results of this dissertation. The hydrodynamic forces and moments are obtained by the method of hydrodynamic derivatives for simulations about service speed, while for simulations at low speed used a semi - empirical method based on the principle of cross-flow. Initially, performed the validation of the simulation results with the literature for the case of pusher-barge system with conventional propulsion. Then the model was adapted to other types of propulsion and maneuvering systems proposed. The results show that there is a greater efficiency of azimuth propulsion system and equipment in the bow to maneuver at low speeds, which makes it suitable for application in river transport, because these vessels navigate slower speeds compared to other types of vessels.

Object Detection from FMCW Radar Using Deep Learning

Sensors, as a crucial part of autonomous driving, are primarily used for perceiving the environment. The recent deep learning development of different sensors has demonstrated the ability of machines recognizing and understanding their surroundings. Automotive radar, as a primary sensor for self-driving vehicles, is well-known for its robustness against variable lighting and weather conditions. Compared with camera-based deep learning development, Object detection using automotive radars has not been explored to its full extent. This can be attributed to the lack of public radar datasets. In this thesis, we collect a novel radar dataset that contains radar data in the form of Range-Azimuth-Doppler tensors along with the bounding boxes on the tensor for dynamic road users, category labels, and 2D bounding boxes on the Cartesian Bird-EyeView range map. To build the dataset, we propose an instance-wise auto-annotation algorithm. Furthermore, a novel Range-Azimuth-Doppler based multi-class object detection deep learning model is proposed. The algorithm is a one-stage anchor-based detector that generates both 3D bounding boxes and 2D bounding boxes on Range-AzimuthDoppler and Cartesian domains, respectively. Our proposed algorithm achieves 56.3% AP with IOU of 0.3 on 3D bounding box predictions, and 51.6% with IOU of 0.5 on 2D bounding box predictions. Investigation, design and implementation of MIMO antennas for mobile phones : simulation and measurement of MIMO antennas for mobile handsets and investigations of channel capacity of the radiating elements using spatial and polarisation diversity strategies

The objectives of this work were to investigate, design and implement Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna arrays for mobile phones. Several MIMO antennas were developed and tested over various wireless-communication frequency bands. The radiation performance and channel capacity of these antennas were computed and measured: the results are discussed in the context of the frequency bands of interest. A comprehensive study of MIMO antenna configurations such as 2 × 1, 3 × 1, 2 × 2 and 3 × 3, using polarisation diversity as proposed for future mobile handsets, is presented. The channel capacity is investigated and discussed, as applying to Rayleigh fading channels with different power spectrum distributions with respect to azimuth and zenith angles. The channel capacity of 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 MIMO systems using spatial polarisation diversity is presented for different antenna designs. The presented results show that the maximum channel capacity for an antenna contained within a small volume can be reached with careful selection of the orthogonal spatial fields. The results are also compared against planar array MIMO antenna systems, in which the antenna size considered was much larger. A 50% antenna size reduction method is explored by applying magnetic wall concept on the symmetry reference of the antenna structure. Using this method, a triple dual-band inverted-F antenna system is presented and considered for MIMO application. Means of achieving minimum coupling between the three antennas are investigated over the 2.45 GHz and 5.2 GHz bands. A new 2 2 MIMO dual-band balanced antenna handset, intended to minimise the coupling with the handset and human body was proposed, developed and tested. The antenna coupling with the handset and human hand is reported in terms the radiation performance and the available channel capacity. In addition, a dual-polarisation dipole antenna is proposed, intended for use as one of three collocated orthogonal antennas in a polarisation-diversity MIMO communication system. The antenna actually consists of two overlaid electric and magnetic dipoles, such that their radiation patterns are nominally identical but they are cross-polarised and hence only interact minimally.

Object Detection and Tracking Using Uncalibrated Cameras

This thesis considers the problem of tracking an object in world coordinates using measurements obtained from multiple uncalibrated cameras. A general approach to track the location of a target involves different phases including calibrating the camera, detecting the object's feature points over frames, tracking the object over frames and analyzing object's motion and behavior. The approach contains two stages. First, the problem of camera calibration using a calibration object is studied. This approach retrieves the camera parameters from the known locations of ground data in 3D and their corresponding image coordinates. The next important part of this work is to develop an automated system to estimate the trajectory of the object in 3D from image sequences. This is achieved by combining, adapting and integrating several state-of-the-art algorithms. Synthetic data based on a nearly constant velocity object motion model is used to evaluate the performance of camera calibration and state estimation algorithms.

Vehicle detection and tracking using wireless sensors and video cameras

This thesis presents the development of a surveillance testbed using wireless sensors and video cameras for vehicle detection and tracking. The experimental study includes testbed design and discusses some of the implementation issues in using wireless sensors and video cameras for a practical application. A group of sensor devices equipped with light sensors are used to detect and localize the position of moving vehicle. Background subtraction method is used to detect the moving vehicle from the video sequences. Vehicle centroid is calculated in each frame. A non-linear minimization method is used to estimate the perspective transformation which project 3D points to 2D image points. Vehicle location estimates from three cameras are fused to form a single trajectory representing the vehicle motion. Experimental results using both sensors and cameras are presented. Average error between vehicle location estimates from the cameras and the wireless sensors is around 0.5ft.

Nonlinear MPC for Motion Control and Thruster Allocation of Ships

Critical automated maneuvers for ships typically require a redundant set of thrusters. The motion control system hierarchy is commonly separated into several layers using a high-level motion controller and a thruster allocation (TA) algorithm. This allows for a modular design of the software where the high-level controller can be designed without comprehensive information on the thrusters, while detailed issues such as input saturation and rate limits are handled by the TA. However, for a certain set of thruster configurations this decoupling may result in poor control performance due to the limited knowledge in the high-level controller about the physical limitations of the ship and the behavior of the TA. This thesis investigates different approaches of improving the control performance, using nonlinear Model Predictive Control (MPC) as a foundation for the developed motion controllers due to its optimized solution and capability of satisfying constraints. First, a decoupled system is implemented and results are provided for two simple motion tasks showing problems related to the decoupling. Thereafter, two different approaches are taken to remedy the observed drawbacks. A nonlinear MPC controller is developed combining the motion controller and thruster allocation resulting in a more robust control system. Then, in order to keep the control system modularized, an investigation of possible ways to augment the decoupled system so as to achieve similar performance as the combined system is carried out. One proposed solution is a nonlinear MPC controller with time-varying constraints accounting for the current limitations of the thruster system. However, this did not always improve the control performance since the behavior of the TA still is unknown to the MPC controller.

Residential Use of Building Integrated Photo Voltaics

Building Integrated Photo Voltaics (BIPVs) are devices which are manufactured to replace building components exposed to sufficient sunlight to generate energy. Photo Voltaic Roof tiles are Building Integrated components which can be used instead of traditional roofing materials. The following thesis is focused on comparing traditional, cheaper asphalt roof tiles with Photo Voltaic (PV) roofing tiles in terms of energy cost savings during their respective Net Present Values. The method used for achieving this is computer simulation made possible by software named "Solar Advisory Model" (SAM), developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL), to simulate energy output and resultant energy costs saved. The simulations have been run on a prototype example of a model of a dwelling unit's roof area. The simulations have been repeated for 35 cities all over the U.S.A. for 5 different climatic zones on the same prototype example of the dwelling unit. Similarly, the roof area being laid with an array of PV roof tiles has been estimated for coverage by traditional asphalt roof shingles by using data from the RS Means construction costs data. The estimated costs associated with the asphalt roof area have been adjusted to a different set of 35 locations from the 5 climatic zones by using the location factor from RS Means. A statistical analysis was done to analyze the data, net present value of roofing materials being the dependent variable versus climatic zones and roofing material as the independent variables. The statistical model also included CDD (Cooling Degree Days) and HDD (Heating Degree Days) as co-variates. The results indicate that NPV (Net Present Value) of BIPV roof is significantly different from that of asphalt roof. Another statistical analysis was done to determine the effect of climatic zones on energy savings due to the use of BIPV roofing. Energy savings (in US$) was used as a dependent variable, and climatic zone as the independent variable. HDD AND CDD were also included in this model as co-variates. The results of this test indicate that both climatic zone and HDD have an effect on total energy savings.

Experimental results from the Lysekil Wave Power Research Site

This thesis presents how experimental results, from wave power research performed offshore at the Lysekil research site, were obtained. The data were used to verify theoretical models as well as evaluate the feasibility of wave power as a future sustainable energy source. The first experiments carried out at the research site was the measurement of the force in a line where one end was connected to a buoy with a diameter of 3 m and the other end to a set of springs with limited stroke length. The system is exposed to high peak forces compared to average forces. The maximum measured force in the line, when the buoy motion is limited by a stiff stopper rope is ten times the average force in that particular sea state. The experiment performed on the first wave energy converter tested at the Lysekil Research Site is described. The infrastructure of the site is presented where the central connection point is the measuring station. The key finding is that it is possible to transform the motions of ocean waves into electrical energy and distribute it to land. Many wave energy converters must be interconnected if large amounts of energy are to be harvested from the waves. The first submerged substation intended for aggregation of energy from wave power converters is described, with focus on the measurement and control system placed inside the substation. During this experiment period the generators were equipped with many different sensors; these measurements are explained in the thesis. The system that aggregates power from the studied wave energy converter is regularly exposed to peak power of up to 20 times the maximum average output from the converter. Vertical and horizontal movement of the buoy has been measured in different ways. The result is that the vertical displacement of the buoy can be measured with a simple accelerometer circuit but it is much more complicated to measure the horizontal displacement. A special method for measuring the horizontal displacement has been implemented by measuring the strain in the enclosure and the force in the line. / Den här avhandlingen berättar om hur experimenten vid Lysekils forskningsområde för vågkraft har utförts.
