"Controlabilidade do rolamento de uma esfera sobre uma superfície de revolução" / Controllability of the rolling of a ball over a surface of revolution

O trabalho apresenta inicialmente os conceitos clássicos de rolamento (sem escorregamento e sem pivotamento) de uma superfície sobre outra usando os triedros de Darboux das duas superfícies ao longo das respectivas curvas de contato. Mostra, ainda, a equivalência desses conceitos com outras definições. A seguir, estuda-se a controlabilidade no problema do rolamento de uma esfera sobre uma superfície S de revolução, tanto no caso de rolar sem escorregar como no caso de não escorregar e não pivotar; a controlabilidade visa determinar a atingibilidade entre dois 'estados' da esfera (posição em S e orientação), isto é, de elementos do espaço das configurações S×SO(3). Na seqüência, estabelecem-se condições nos controles para que os rolamentos sem escorregamento e sem pivotamento ocorram sobre geodésicas de S e obtém-se, também, a controlabilidade nesta situação. Finalmente, verifica-se que, quando S é um plano, 3 ou 4 rolamentos retilíneos, sem escorregamento e sem pivotamento, são suficientes para garantir a atingibilidade entre dois “estados" da esfera. / This work starts by presenting the classical concepts of rolling (without slipping and without slipping or twisting) of a surface over another one, using the Darboux referential frames of the two surfaces along their contact curves. It shows the equivalence between these concepts with other definitions. In the sequel one studies the controllability in the rolling problem of a ball over a surface of revolution S, including both: the non slipping and the non slipping or twisting cases; controllability aims to determine the reachability between two 'states'of the ball (position on S and orientation), that is, two elements of the configuration space S × SO(3). It follows by establishing conditions on controls in order that the rollings occur along geodesics of S and by studying the controllability in this situation. Finally, it is shown that if S is the plane, 3 or 4 retilinear moves without slipping or twisting are enough to guarantee reachability between two states of the ball.

Thermo-Mechanical Reliability of Micro-Interconnects in Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits: Modeling and Simulation

Three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) have been designed with the purpose of achieving higher communication speed by reducing the interconnect length between integrated circuits, and integrating heterogeneous functions into one single package, among other advantages. As a growing, new technology, researchers are still studying the different parameters that impact the overall lifetime of such packages in order to ensure the customer receives reliable end products. This study focused on the effect of four design parameters on the lifetime of the interconnects and, in particular, solder balls and through-silicon vias (TSVs). These parameters included TSV pitch, TSV diameter, underfill stiffness and underfill thickness. A three-dimensional finite element model of a 3D IC package was built in ANSYS to analyze the effect of these parameters under thermo-mechanical cyclic loading. The stresses and damage in the interconnects of the IC were evaluated using Coffin-Manson and the energy partitioning fatigue damage models. A three-level Taguchi design of experiment method was utilized to evaluate the effect of each parameter. Minitab software was used to assess the main effects of the selected design parameters. Locations of maximum stresses and possible damage initiation were discussed, and recommendations were made to the manufacturer for package optimization. Due to the very small scale of the interconnects, conducting mechanical tests and measuring strains in small microscopic scale material is very complicated and challenging; therefore, it is very difficult to validate finite element and analytical analysis of stress and strain in microelectronic devices. At the next step of this work, a new device and method were proposed to facilitate testing and strain measurements of material at microscopic scale. This new micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) consisted of two piezoelectric members that were constrained by a rigid frame and that sandwiched the test material. These two piezoelectric members act as load cell and strain measurement sensors. As the voltage is applied to the first member, it induces a force to the specimen and deforms it, which in turn deforms the second piezoelectric member. The second piezoelectric member induces an output voltage that is proportional to its deformation. Therefore, the strain and stresses in the test material can be determined by knowing the mechanical characteristics of the piezoelectric members. Advantages of the proposed system include ease of use, particularly at microscopic scale, adaptability to measure the strain of different materials, and flexibility to measure the modulus of elasticity for an unknown material. An analytical analysis of the device and method was presented, and the finite element simulation of the device was accomplished. The results were compared and discussed. An inelastic specimen was also analyzed and sensitivity of the device to detecting nonlinear behavior was evaluated. A characteristic curve was developed for the specific geometry and piezoelectric material.

Effects of Alternative Seating on Children with Disabilities

Children with disabilities in school settings often display problem behavior. These challenging behaviors can be inattention, disruptions in class, difficulties with transitions between tasks, and low task motivation. These types of behaviors can lead to problems for the students with their peers, teachers, and school staff. One way to decrease problem behavior is to implement antecedent manipulations to prevent problem behavior from ever occurring. One type of antecedent manipulation is using alternative seating in the classroom, such as stability balls or stabili-t stools. However, little research has been conducted to evaluate different types of alternative seating, therefore this study used an alternating treatments design to evaluate the effects of stability balls versus stabili-t stools on in-seat and on-task behavior in an academic setting. Results indicated increases in both in-seat and on-task behavior with the use of both alternative types of seating. In-seat behavior increased more substantially then on-task behavior with alternative seating. Social validity results indicated that stability balls were not well liked by teachers and therapists, however the stabili-t stools were found to be acceptable. Both types of alternative seating were chosen by participants in the choice phase, however the stabili-t stool was chosen more often.

Queer kinaesthesia : on the dance floor at gay and lesbian dance parties Sydney, 1994-1998

What is happening on the dance floor at the gay and lesbian dance parties? What are lesbians and gay men doing when they dance? This thesis presents a project in performance research that takes as its locus on investigation the dance parties that have been produced annually by gay and lesbian organisations in Sydney since the early 1980s. In particular, it focuses on the largest of these dance parties, Mardi Gras Party and Sleaze Ball, during a period of research from 1994 to 1998. Harnessing these resources, the thesis aims at investigating how dance parties sustain an ongoing salience for gay men and lesbians in Sydney. On the basis of ethnographic research, performance documentation, and movement analysis, the investigation pursues an analytical trajectory across the making of dance parties within a subcultural scene, to the doing of dance parties as performance events, and then onto the dance floor as a site for performative practice. Responding to a persistent debate about straights at the parties, the anlayses register the salience of dancing as an etiquette of doing dance party as it is done, as a queer kinaesthesia sustained on the dance floor, and as an occasional community danced into existence. The thesis attests to the pertinence of analysing movement. It analyses the mobility of practice, rather than its textual residue; the kinaesthesia of performative identities, rather than their morphological contours; and the choregraphy of community, rather than its substantive contents. Recognising that queer theory too has an interest in movement, in proliferating metaphors for the mobility of queer identifications and desires, the thesis argues in conclusion that such metaphors represent imaginative flights of fancy to the extent that they fail to grasp the corporeality of queer kinaesthesia / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Amorphous drug preparation using ball milling

Polymorphism and crystallinity are now recognised as important issues in drug development. This is shown by the increased amount of research in this area over recent years. In pharmaceutical development milling is an important unit operation for size reduction to improve powder handling, processing and dissolution rate. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effect of ball milling (and cryo-milling) on the solid state properties, including amorphous drug formation, of pharmaceutical solids. Milling was carried out using an oscillatory ball mill (Mixer Mill MM301, Retsch GmbH & Co., Germany). In cryo-milling the milling jars were immersed in liquid nitrogen for three min before milling. XRPD was used as the main technique to evaluate the milled samples. Ranitidine hydrochloride (RAN) and indomethacin (INDO) were the model drugs used in this study. It was found that upon milling, RAN form 1 converts to RAN form 2 via an amorphous phase. A faster amorphization rate was observed when the crystalline samples were cryo-milled. Amorphous ranitidine hydrochloride was characterized to have a glass transition (T[g]) range of 13 to 30 �C and a crystallization exotherm (T[c]) between 30 and 65 �C. Conversion was found to occur faster when the temperature of the solid powder was greater than the T[c]. Under various storage conditions, similarly, crystallization of the amorphous phase mainly led to RAN form 2. However, some form 1 and amorphous phase was also detected on the XRPD diffractograms. Using partial least squares regression, the amount of solid form components in the ternary RAN mixtures were successfully quantified. RAN form 2 did not convert to form 1 under any milling (including cryo-milling) or storage conditions used in this study. Overall, RAN form 2 was found to be the thermodynamically stable form and the two (RAN) polymorphs are likely to be a monotropic pair. In a co-milling study of INDO and RAN, the two crystalline drugs were successfully converted into a single amorphous phase after 60 min of co-milling in a cold room (4 �C). The T[g] range (26-44 �C) was also characterized for these mixtures. DRIFTS spectra of the co-milled amorphous samples indicated an interaction had occurred between the carboxylic acid carbonyl (HO-C=O) and benzonyl amide (NC=O) of the INDO molecule with the aci-nitro (C=NO₂) of RAN. Depending on the ratio of INDO to RAN, in general, the amorphous mixtures were stable at 4 �C after 30 days of storage. Crystallization was faster when the binary mixtures were stored at higher temperature or contained higher amounts of RAN in the mixture. Although XRPD and DRIFTS suggested an interaction between the two drugs, co-crystal formation was not observed between INDO and RAN. Ball milling can be used to produce amorphous drug. The rate and extent of amorphization is dependent on the milling conditions. A faster rate of amorphization was observed when the crystalline drugs were cryo-milled. Amorphous drug formation can be made either alone or in combination with another crystalline drug. Amorphization could offer a significant improvement on the dissolution profile and the bioavailability of the poorly water soluble drug - indomethacin. Furthermore, ball milling can also be used to produce a homogenous mix between solids. The �goodmix� effect can be used for seed-induced crystallization or, when the XRPD or Raman data were combined with partial least squares regression, to create a reliable calibration model for quantitative analysis.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnesium-Silicon and Magnesium-Tin Solid Solutions for Thermoelectric Applications

The environmentally friendly n-type Mg2(Si, Sn) thermoelectric solid solutions have a strong potential of commercial utilization in thermoelectric (TE) energy conversion due to their availability, low density (~3.02 g/cm3), and high stability at middle temperature range (400-600 ▫C) that are typically observed from waste heat dissipating systems. The bulk materials were prepared from element powders via slow cooking under vacuum condition and current-assisted hot-press sintering. Temperature vs time curves have been researched in this thesis for fully reacted magnesium-silicide & magnesium-stannide green ingots with doping materials i.e. antimony, bismuth by different doping ratios. These ingots were ground by a high energy ball miller, uniaxial cold pressed into half inch pallets and then sintered by Direct Current-assisted hot pressing. Different synthesis conditions such as ball milling, sintering time, pressure, have been compared by SEM images and XRD tests analysis to figure out optimized process parameters. Several samples’ thermal conductivities (κ) were plotted as a function of temperature to study different synthesis strategies and doping materials’ effects on phonon scattering inside bulk thermoelectric materials.

Simulation and Optimization of Mechanical Alloying Using the Event-Driven Method

Mechanical Alloying is a manufacturing process that produces alloys by cold welding of powders. Usually, a vial containing both the powder and steel balls is agitated. Due to impact between the balls and balls and the vial, the powder is mechanically deformed, crushed, and mixed at nano-scales. In this thesis, a numerical model is developed to simulate the dynamics of the vial and the grinding balls of the SPEX 8000 ball milling device, a standardized equipment in both industrial and academic investigations of ball milling. The numerical model is based on the Event Driven Method, typically used to model granular flows. The method implemented is more efficient than the discrete element method used previously to study ball milling dynamics. The numerical tool obtained is useful for scale-up and optimization of mechanical alloying of various materials. An optimization study is presented for the SPEX 8000.
