The Islamic doctrine of Al-Wala' wal Bara' (Loyalty and Disavowal) in modern Salafism

Bin Ali, Mohamed January 2012 (has links)
This study examines the Islamic concept of Al-Wala’ wal Bara’ (Loyalty and Disavowal) in modern Salafism referred to here as WB. The research is divided into two parts. Part One introduces the phenomenon of modern Salafism and the concept of WB (Chapter One). It also demonstrates how the Quran, particularly its sixtieth chapter (Surah Al-Mumtahanah) and the concept of Millat Ibrahim (Religion of Abraham) play an important role in formulating the modern Salafi concept of WB (Chapter Two). Part Two discusses the realities and complexities of the concept. First, the concept in Wahhabism, whose adherents form the majority of modern Salafis, and whose tradition is believed to have influenced and shaped modern Salafism, is discussed (Chapter Three). The complexities of WB are described as the research recognizes the diversity or “spectrum” of the concept in modern Salafism, which ranges from what might be termed “very mild” to “very extreme” (Chapter Four). The research shows that one of the main reasons for this diversity is the different Salafi orientations or the backgrounds from which modern Salafis emerge. This is proven through analyzing the writings on WB by Salafis of purist, politico and Jihadi backgrounds – a specific categorization of modern Salafis used for the purpose of this research (Chapter Five). The analysis is conducted by mainly observing the role of WB within their intellectual systems. Through this analysis, it is concluded that a particular Salafi orientation has an effect on the style of writing and presentation of the concept by modern Salafis. This reflects the position of WB in modern Salafism as being fluid and multi-dimensional. The research then, aims to explore the centrality, breadth and complexity of the WB concept in modern Salafism, and proves that WB in modern Salafism is not static but flexible and dynamic. The significance of the research lies in the fact that understanding modern Salafi conceptions of WB is an urgent priority in the lives of Muslims today. This understanding is critical, as Muslims increasingly live as minority communities across the globe and WB has specific implications for whether (and how) Muslims can live with non-Muslims. The research concludes that the consequences of applying the modern Salafi concept of WB are serious – WB generally promotes a way of life that is insular and hostile towards non-Muslims and this, it might be argued, is at variance with more tolerant, inclusive nature of Islam.

Villkorens estetik : Människans och litteraturens villkor i ett urval texter av Willy Kyrklund / The Art of the Rules : The Rules of Literature and Human Existence in a Selection of Willy Kyrklund’s Prose

Renholm, Sebastian January 2016 (has links)
This study explores the interplay between theme and form in the writings of Willy Kyrklund. It investigates the relationship between the concept of “människans villkor” (the human condition), the rules of literature and the use of mathematics. Using a combined methodology of close reading, according to the principles of new criticism and hermeneutics, with narratology, this study analyses several texts covering a wide span of Kyrklund’s oeuvre. Special attention is devoted to short prose and the narrative strategies and aesthetics of short stories. Furthermore this study looks at the strategies Kyrklund employs in order to dispel the illusions of literature and direct the reader’s attention to the textuality of the text. It concludes that the interest in “människans villkor” and the constructions of literature is widely interconnected and a part of a broader interest in structures and rules. Using the short story format, Kyrklund emphasizes the structures and conditions which shape literature and human existence. This is also achieved through certain narrative strategies heavily characterized by distance. The reader is thereby invited to follow the events from a higher perspective, where the conditions, “människans villkor”, become more evident. The scepticism towards language and literature is also reflected in the praise and use of mathematics, which elevates the human mind beyond the unreliability of language and the general calamity of earthly existence. The laws of mathematics are unreachable, and mathematical language is thus used in order to portray a longing for purity and the absolute, which the human being cannot attain.

Samtala som ung(e) : En samtalsanalytisk studie av Mirja Unges dialogstil / To Talk Like Unge : A study of the dialogue style of the author Mirja Unge

Torefeldt, Stina January 2020 (has links)
Mirja Unge is a Swedish author who often writes about young people and the tough situations they face. She writes both plays and short-stories and is acclaimed for her dialogue. The aim of this essay is to examine Unge’s dialogue style and how potential face-threatening situations are portrayed. To reach my aim I pose questions regarding the conversational support in two of Unge’s literary works, the short story Det var igår bara and the play Mariella and compare the result. The dialogues analysed both tackle the sensitive subject of sexual assault, a topic that is potentially face-threatening. The analysis is based on the theoretical and methodical framework of conversation analysis. The conversational support is analysed through “keys” that unlock interesting points in the conversation. The keys in this essay are ‘topic generation’ and ‘topic shifts’. The results show that in the text with the most conversational support (the short story) the subject of assault is avoided and only appear in the characters thoughts. In the play on the other hand there is very little conversational support, but the character tells the whole story in a direct manner. This indicates that the situation in the short story is more face-threatening than in the play. However there are other aspects in the dialogue that makes the conversation difficult for the characters in both stories.
