The effect of aversive racism on mock legal decision making.

Haw, St. John Blake. January 2008
The present study experimentally examined the effect(s) of aversive racism on mock legal decisions made by university students. The experiment adopted a 3 (Evidence quality: low, ambiguous or high) x 2 (race stereotype crime: black vs. white) x 2 (Defendant race: black vs. white) between subjects design, in which 785 black, white, Indian and coloured participants were asked to judge legal cases. The legal vignettes were piloted to ensure that low, ambiguous and high evidence conditions were clearly represented, and that the white stereotype and black stereotype crimes chosen for the research were appropriate. Participants were each given two vignettes and used 10-point scales to judge a) the guilt or innocence of the defendant(s) and b) the sentence they would recommend for the defendant(s) should they be found guilty by a court of law. Our prediction that we would find evidence for the classic aversive racism effect in this sample was not supported, and no evidence of racial bias was found. Interestingly, white participants judged the guilt of defendants more leniently than all other race groups. These results are discussed and recommendations for future research are made. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

Arrestation et placement en détention avant jugement : points de vue et expériences des justiciables

Brassard, Virginie 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis aim to understand and analyze the experiences of individuals placed in pretrial detention. More specifically, this study aims to clarify that lived on the judicial and prison components involved in a remand. We want more free from the felling of such an investment. Finally, we wanted to reflect on the use of pretrial detention from the perspective of justice based on risk management and on the logic of efficiency, effectiveness and accountability. To do this, we used a qualitative approach to conduct our twenty-three interviews with men and women incarcerated awaiting trial in four detention facilities in Quebec. From these interviews, two main themes emerged, namely The judicial and prison experiences of the accused, marked by uncertainty, incomprehension, helplessness, dependency, difficult conditions of detention, losses and expectation and Sentiments from a remand, marked by suffering, injustice and the urgency out of this temporary situation. It is clear from our analysis that the way the system is administered justice, public opinion and the policies in effect have an impact on how to manage the use of remand in promoting the opposite of its original. Thus, the measurement is to be conducted at the expense of the main actor: the accused.

Možnosti před cestovního poradenství a specifické profylaxe importovaných infekčních onemocnění v Jihočeském kraji / Possibilities of pre-travel consultancy and specific prophylaxis of imported infectious diseases in the region of South Bohemia

RYTÍŘOVÁ, Zuzana January 2012 (has links)
The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the problems of imported infectious diseases. It comprises the factors influencing their incidence and the possibilities of specific and nonspecific prophylaxis and prevention. Further on, this part focuses on chosen infectious diseases, their epidemiological and clinical characteristics and trends in incidence. These infections are divided according to possibilities of specific prophylaxis. The thesis offers an overview of the possibilities of pre-travel consultancy in the South Bohemia region. The practical part of the thesis aims at the characterization of the incidence of imported infectious diseases in the districts within the region of South Bohemia in the years 2000 ? 2010. It also presents a survey of medical facilities and other subjects providing pre-travel consultancy and specific prophylaxis in the sphere of imported infectious diseases prevention. During the monitoring period, the total number of imported diseases which occurred in the region of South Bohemia and were registered in the EPIDAT system was 351. Out of this number, 205 cases occurred in the district of České Budějovice. (Český Krumlov ? 47, Jindřichův Hradec ? 25, Písek ? 2, Prachatice ? 17, Strakonice ? 31, Tábor ? 24). The most frequent imported infections were alimentary infections (240 cases, i.e.68 %); out of this, the most frequent cases were diseases caused by Salmonella (73 cases), Shigella (71 cases) and campylobacters (42 cases). The most frequent countries of origin were Egypt (43 cases), Croatia (42 cases) and India (30 cases). The number of medical facilities and other subjects providing pre-travelling consultancy and specific prophylaxis of infectious diseases rose from nine to thirteen during the period of monitoring. Four hypotheses were determined within this thesis. Hypothesis no.1 ? during the period of monitoring the total number of imported infectious diseases increased. Hypothesis no.2 ? during the period of monitoring the total number of infectious diseases imported from exotic destinations increased. Hypothesis no. 3 ? during the period of monitoring there was an increase in the number of the facilities and other subjects providing pre-travel advice, vaccination or other specific prophylaxis. Hypothesis no. 4 ? the increasing number of medical facilities or other subjects providing pre-travel advice, vaccination or other specific prophylaxis did not influence an increase in the number of imported infectious diseases during the period of monitoring. Only hypotheses no. 3 and no. 4 were proved.

Pedagogická činnost před 20-30lety. / Pedagogical activity 20-30 years ago.

NETÍKOVÁ, Miroslava January 2014 (has links)
My science described and compared differences between pedagogical work and peda-gogical work before 20 ? 30 years ago. I asked myself some questions for example ? what differences are between pedagogical work in these days and pedagogical work before 20 ? 30 years ago? What was different? What about the relationship between teachers and pupils? What about methods, which methods teachers used in their class-room? And what about relationship between teachers and parents of pupils? Were par-ents interested in pupils´ marks? Was the period before 20 ? 30 years ago influenced by policy? In my theoretical part I described both ? the school events and the political events which took places before 20 ? 30 years ago. I made up two types of questionnaires. The first type of a questionnaire is for teach-ers who taught before 20 ? 30 years ago. The second type of a questionnaire is for teachers who teach in these days. I used tables and graphs to interpret my obtained re-sults from the two types of questionnaires. I think that my science and obtained results are beneficial. The results from my ques-tionnaires I find useful and important. All my unanswered questions were answered.

Vlastní literární dílo s autorským komentářem / Personal literary writing with an authorial commentary

Wilczková, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
The Thesis Personal prose with an authorial commentary is divided into two parts. The first part consists of the personal prose called Before it Happened. This is a more perspective psychological prose from family life in which Mirek plays the lead role (is the main character). Mirek has been a more active child since his childhood. It brings to his parents a number of worries that multiply with increasing age. At the age of twelve, at the time when the story unfolds, his problems get too far and cause a number of complications in his parents' marriage as well. In the second part of the thesis the author reflects her own story. It deals, for example, with the characteristics of the individual characters, the motivation for the choice of the subject, the variants of the conclusion and the choice of the literary code and the title. Two literary criticisms and an author's statement to them form an integral part of the thesis. KEYWORDS psychological prose, Before it Happened, family relationships, troubled child, title, narration

AMERICAN CULTURE OF SERVITUDE: THE PROBLEM OF DOMESTIC SERVICE IN ANTEBELLUM LITERATURE AND CULTURE

Holliger, Andrea 01 January 2017 (has links)
My dissertation argues that domestic service alters a culture’s relationship to the laboring body. I theorize this relationship via popular literary and cultural antebellum texts to explore the effects of servitude as a trope. Methodologically, each chapter reads a literary text in context with social and legal paradigms to 1) demonstrate that servitude undergirds myriad articulations of antebellum power and difference; 2) show how servitude inflects the construction of these paradigms; and 3) trace Americans’ changing relationship to the concept of servitude from the Early Republic through the Civil War. I begin with James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pioneers (1823), exploring the famous Leather-stocking character – not (as has canonically been the case) as an icon of American independence, but as an icon of American servitude. I historicize this reading with the legal history of master/servant statutes in the early nineteenth century. While public opinion quarantined servitude to an oppressed racial minority, the apparatuses of the law were dramatically expanding servitude’s purview, rendering the master/servant relation the touchstone from which to understand all employment relations. Following, my second chapter examines Caroline Kirkland’s A New Home, Who’ll Follow? (1833). I show that Kirkland’s text dramatizes the narrativity of identity-formation and its potential class consequences. Throughout, Kirkland suggests that this is particularly a women’s problem, whose narratives of self are charged with maintaining the narratives of the family and, synecdochically, the nation. Maria Susanna Cummins’s The Lamplighter (1854) is a revolutionary intervention into the narratives of laborless-ness. I read the adoptions within the novel alongside the legalization of bounded servitude for children, since antebellum minors could be adopted or sign indentures if doing so was determined to be in their “best interest.” In my fourth and final chapter, I examine Civil War draft resistance. In her House and Home Papers columns for The Atlantic (1863-4), Harriet Beecher Stowe turned to the tropes of servitude to make sense of these violent eruptions. Yet this strategy laid bare servitude’s place as the basis for many other forms of state power (including military service) and servitude’s incompatibility with principles of individual sovereignty.
