The appropriateness of selected subtests of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition for hearing impaired children

Perley-McField, Jo-Anne January 1990 (has links)
This study proposed to evaluate the appropriateness of selected subtests of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition (SB:FE) for use with severely to profoundly hearing impaired children. The subjects used in this study were enrolled in a residential/day school for the deaf whose educational methodology was Total Communication. The subjects were tested on both the SB:FE nonverbal selected subtests and the Performance Scale of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R PIQ). To assess appropriateness, several procedures were employed comparing data gathered from the hearing impaired sample with data reported for the standardized population of the SB:FE. Correlations were computed between the WISC-R and the SB:FE and comparisons of the total composite scores for each measure were made to detect any systematic differences. The results indicated that the correlations reported for the hearing impaired sample are generally similar to the correlations reported for the standardized sample of the SB:FE. The analysis performed between the Area Scores of the SB:FE and the WISC-R PIQ to detect systematic differences revealed a difference of one standard deviation between these two instruments, with the. SB:FE results being lower than the WISC-R PIQ results. It was concluded that the selected subtests of the SB:FE and the WISC-R PIQ could not be used interchangeably. Further research into this area was advised before using this measure to estimate general cognitive ability for hearing impaired children whose levels of language development may be delayed. Further research was also encouraged to confirm the suggestion of greater predictive validity of the SB:FE with academic measures. It was suggested that these findings indicated that the use of language as a cognitive tool may be important in acquiring certain problem solving skills. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Topos Prahy ve francouzské literatuře / Prague as a Literary Topos by French authors

Šimr, Patrik January 2020 (has links)
This master thesis written in French language "Le topos de Prague dans la littérature francaise" is analysing literature pieces: Le Passant de Prague and Zone, Guillaume Apollinaire, L'insoutenable légèreté de l'être, Milan Kundera, HHhH, Laurent Binet, La vie brève de Jan Palach, Anthony Sitruk, Mémoires d'outre-tombe, René de Chateaubriand, Les Lettres, Prosper Mérimée and poem Charles Bridge from Cycle de Prague, Serge Patrice Thibodeau. In the main part of the work emphasis is placed on the use of the unique topos of Prague, the purpose of its selection, its role and function in the literary text, as well as intertextual interconnection with other works working with the motifs of Prague. In the introduction, a literary theoretical concept is defined and demonstrated on other examples than this capital city, as there are more definitions and ambiguity in the understanding of this concept could cause difficulties in interpreting the results of text analysis. The result of the work is a limited number, yet three centuries and several genres covering a set of francophone texts that work with the topos of Prague. This is at the end enriched of work with a didactic outline of the use of results, actually the topic of this work in general, in French language lessons in Czech schools. KEYWORDS topos;...

The Effects of Serial Testing Upon the Results of the Standford-Binet Tests of Intelligence

McCullough, Betsey Rogers 01 May 1948 (has links)
The revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale probably is the best instrument we now have for measuring the general intelligence of young people. Using this scale we can foretell to a large degree a child's future mental growth; and with this knowledge as an important part of the total knowledge needed for prediction, we can more scientifically plan his further education and his vocational choice.

Le rôle de la mémoire de travail telle que conçue par Baddeley dans les quatre sous-tests de l'échelle de Stanford-Binet

Dumont, Jilda 12 November 2021 (has links)

Problematika hybridních útvarů: román HHhH Laurenta Bineta / History or Fiction? The Question of Hybrid Literature: Laurent Binet's Novel HHhH

Soukup, Jan January 2022 (has links)
The diploma thesis concerns the questions of hybrid literature, especially the novel HHhH by Laurent Binet. Even though history and fiction can impact and enrich each other, their relationship is quite problematic. Therefore philosophers, historians and literary critics are trying to answer the questions of how to write (about) history. Laurent Binet tackles this in his novel HHhH, in which two storylines keep alternating. In the first one narrator constantly addresses the reader, expressing his doubts if it is even possible to give a faithful account of an historical event. In the second storyline he portrays the events that led to the assassination of deputy Reich Protector of the Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich. The goal of the thesis is to analyse the relationship between history and fiction, as this relationship has during the 20th century undergone rapid changes, which are also apparent in the analysed text. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first, which serves as a theoretical base for the subsequent analysis of HHhH, depicts the historiographical approaches, which have changed and evolved significantly in the 20th century. The second part tracks the reflections of the particular historiographical approaches in HHhH and examines, which conclusions has the author reached in his...

A Generalization of AUC to an Ordered Multi-Class Diagnosis and Application to Longitudinal Data Analysis on Intellectual Outcome in Pediatric Brain-Tumor Patients

Li, Yi 10 April 2009 (has links)
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves have been widely used in evaluation of the goodness of the diagnostic method in many study fields, such as disease diagnosis in medicine. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) naturally became one of the most used variables in gauging the goodness of the diagnosis (Mossman, Somoza 1991). Since medical diagnosis often is not dichotomous, the ROC curve and AUC need to be generalized to a multi-dimensional case. The generalization of AUC to multi-class case has been studied by many researchers in the past decade. Most recently, Nakas & Yiannoutsos (2004) considered the ordered d classes ROC analysis by only considering the sensitivities of each class. Hence, their dimension is only d. Cha (2005) considered more types of mis-classification in the ordered multiple-class case, but reduced the dimension of Ferri, at.el. from d(d-1) to 2(d-1). In this dissertation we are trying to adjust and calculate the VUS for an ordered multipleclass with Cha’s 2(d-1)-dimension method. Our methodology of finding the VUS is introduced. We present the method of adjusting and calculating VUS and their statistical inferences for the 2(d-1)-dimension. Some simulation results are included and a real example will be presented. Intellectual outcomes in pediatric brain-tumor patients were investigated in a prospective longitudinal study. The Standard-Binet Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (SB-IV) Standard Age Score (SAS) and Composite intelligence quotient (IQ) score are examined as cognitive outcomes in pediatric brain-tumor patients. Treatment factors, patient factors and time since diagnosis are taken into account as the risk factors. Hierarchical linear/quadratic models and Gompertz based hierarchical nonlinear growth models were applied to build linear and nonlinear longitudinal curves. We use PRESS and Volume Under the Surface (VUS) as the criterions to compare these two methods. Some model interpretations are presented in this dissertation.
