Coetzee

Coetzee, Matthys Gerhardus Human January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (D.Mus)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Optical Precursors in Rubidium Vapor and Their Relation to Superradiance

Yang, Wenlong 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Optical precursor is the sharp optical pulse front that does not show delay in absorptive media. In this thesis, optical precursor behavior in rubidium (Rb) vapor was investigated in the picoseconds regime. An amplified femtosecond laser was shaped to a 7-ps square pulse with sharp rising and trailing edges. This pulse was then sent into a hot rubidium vapor, and the center frequency of the laser pulse was absorbed. The output pulses were measured by a fast streak camera with 2-picosecond resolution. By varying the temperature of the Rb vapor, the measured pulse shapes showed the progression of formation of optical precursors. The measured pulses shapes showed good agreement with theory. On the other hand, a connection between optical precursors and femtosecond laser pumped 3-photon superradiance was investigated in this thesis. Maxwell-Bloch equations were numerically solved in two steps with commercial software Mathematica 8. A good agreement was found between simulation and experiment. It was confirmed that, at low excitation regime, superradiance generated from hot rubidium vapor, which were pumped by a femtosecond laser, can be understood as the formation of optical precursors.

Private Museums and Their Legacies: The Case of Ronald S. Lauder and Adele Bloch-Bauer's Neue Galerie

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The Neue Galerie in New York City includes some of the most impressive and culturally-specific artwork from Ronald S. Lauder's private art collection. The Neue's permanent exhibitions showcase pieces from the Wiener Sezession (Vienna Secession) and Wiener Werkstätte (Applied Arts of Vienna) in an environment that also employs replicas and period specific motifs to evoke the interiors of the private homes in which affluent fin-de-siècle Viennese art patrons lived, displayed influential modernist work, and held culturally important salons. Gustav Klimt's celebrated Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) is arguably the museum's most prized artwork. It serves as an icon that immortalizes Ronald Lauder as private collector. The figure of Adele Bloch-Bauer has also become an important emblem, whose story epitomizes the complexities of Jewish identity and its influence upon Viennese modern art. This thesis explores how the Neue Galerie's physical layout represents a specific model of modernism. By focusing on the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, I urge a rethinking of the museum's relationship to modern art as an interpretation of the past. The themes that surround Adele Bloch-Bauer I have shaped Lauder's agenda as the leading private collector of the art of fin-de-siècle Vienna. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Art History 2012

Fossatti, Nelson Costa January 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 000448380-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 1031015 bytes, checksum: 7951c94bcd5afa19e0416aa9b6e19f37 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013 / Bloch’s ontology suggests different levels in the category of possibility, and, among them, the subjective possibility, which presupposes the human beings’ capacity to accomplish their daydreams and build their utopias that is a fact that triggers an instrumental rationality, determining the domain that men has towards nature. Another level of the possibility identifies, in the natura naturans movement, “nature that produces nature”, the domain that matter has towards man and the consequent degeneration of the matter in this relationship. Thus, our main objective is to present a blochiana solution to the conflict. According to Bloch, the “possible dialectic” is carried out through the organic interaction between the human being’s tendencies as well as latencies of matter. The current study reflects this possibility and verifies that the process of the instrumentation of the world reveals the “possible dialectic”, which can be the solution of the of the impacts, that are trigged by the matter dynamic and the man’s activity, that generates a relevant tension in docta spes, that is, clarified hope. So, we tried to demonstrate that the consequences of this conflict are appropriate for two movements: the first is generated by the human being’s instrumentation, announced by Frankfurt School and was not understood by man in the XXI century; and the second has, as a consequence, the natural evolution of the science, that develops technologies which can build a new face to the world. Therefore, this research suggests that is necessary to rethink about the solution of organicity, man-matter, announced by Bloch, who introduced the ethic aspect in this relationship.

Nonlinear and stochastic driving of a superconducting qubit

Silveri, M. (Matti) 25 April 2013 (has links)
Abstract The topic of this thesis is superconducting electric circuits. Technical advances have made possible the experimental study of Josephson junction based circuit elements which sustain quantum mechanical properties long enough to be denoted as quantum devices. The quantum state can be controlled with electronic variables and measured using standard electrical setups. The research is motivated by the possibility to examine quantum phenomena in circumstances that can be customized, prospects of new quantum devices, and the development of quantum information processing. This thesis presents theoretical studies on the nonlinear and stochastic driving of a superconducting quantum two-level system (qubit). We first investigate the energy level shifts a single-Cooper-pair transistor under large amplitude driving realized via the inherently nonlinear Josephson energy by using an external magnetic flux. The effective driving field substantially deviates from a circular polarization and linear coupling. The energy level shifts are compared to the cases of a vanishing and a weak driving field, measured as the Stark shift and the generalized Bloch-Siegert shift, respectively. We describe criteria for the natural basis of the analytical and the numerical calculations. In addition to that, we develop a formalism based on the Floquet method for the weak probe measurement of the strongly driven qubit. In the latter part of the thesis research, we study utilization of a stochastic driving field whose time evolution is not regular but follows probabilistic laws. We concentrate on the motional averaging phenomenon and show that it can be measured with an unparalleled accuracy by employing a flux-modulated transmon qubit. As the stochastically modulated qubit is simultaneously measured with a moderate driving field, we develop a theoretical description accounting the possible interference effects between the modulation and the drive. The comparison with experimental results shows good agreement. Motional averaging phenomenon can be applied to estimate the properties of fluctuation processes occurring in qubits, e.g., the quasiparticle tunneling or the photon shot noise. Resting on the motional averaging, we anticipate that the qubit dephasing times can be improved if one can accelerate the dynamics of two-level fluctuators. We apply a semiclassical formalism where the qubit is treated with quantum mechanical concepts whereas the driving fields are classical. In the solution procedure, the numerical results support the main analytical understanding. As the theoretical results are extensively compared to reflection measurements, we construct an explicit connection between the dynamics of the studied quantum devices and the measured reflection coefficient.
