Bookmarks : in the footprints of Edward Thomas

This thesis muddies the idea of singular being, tracing the footprints of nature writer and poet Edward Thomas, from the beginning of his epically creative final four years, to the site where he died in 1917, during the Battle of Arras. It is presented as a series of engagements with landscape, writing, and poetry; affective mapping, chasing memory-prompts, bookmarks and the shock of the poetic. The journeys seek to return to an ‘open’ idea of the geographical imagination, negating a negative, reductionist form of geography; shifting the focus away from sociologically determined notions of mobility. A resident of England for all his life, but with Welsh heritage, Edward Thomas believed he belonged nowhere. His texts: little time capsules, admixtures of social commentary, environmental action, and personal musings, are archaeological exercises, presenting a complicated picture of loss, demonstrating the value of artistic imagination. Loss - and subsequent estrangement from the world - would become his poetic source. This thesis is about trying to understand the relationship between poetry - indeed all ‘land writing’ - and place. How it affects in-place, what it does in-place? To understand this relationship properly it was necessary to consider why, as humans, we write? To find out what the subjective condition of the poet, or writer, emerges out of - in order to relay the experience of meeting poetry in-place. Edward Thomas began as a nature writer and became a poet after much agonizing. This made him a useful subject (object) (neither). Furthermore he suffered a long period of introspection and had a knowledge of Freud and psychoanalysis - which he underwent in 1912. This was played out in what Edna Longley (2008) terms; ‘poetic psychodrama.’ His poems often feature a split self or switch between patient and analyst (Longley, 2008). The Other Man, is his doppelganger, who he plays himself off against: the poems are, as such, multi-voiced, counterpointed, intersubjective. Deleuze and Guattari wrote in A Thousand Plateaus (1988: 3): ‘since each of us was already several, there was already quite a crowd.’ Edward Thomas knew this all too well. Οι εξατομικευμένοι κατάλογοι διαδικτύου εμφανίστηκαν σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα με την εμφάνιση των φυλλομετρητών διαδικτύων, και από τότε όλοι οι φυλλομετρητές ενσωματώνουν απλά συστήματα διαχείρισης των εξατομικευμένων καταλόγων. Με τον όρο εξατομικευμένοι κατάλογοι εννοούμε τις προσωπικές συλλογές από ιστοσελίδες που ένας χρήστης διαδικτύου αποθηκεύει κατά την ώρα της πλοήγησης στον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό. Οι εξατομικευμένοι κατάλογοι διαδικτύου χρησιμοποιούνται σαν «προσωπικός χώρος πληροφορίας του δικτύου» για να βοηθούν τους ανθρώπους να θυμούνται και να ανακτούν ενδιαφέρουσες ιστοσελίδες από το διαδίκτυο. Στην εργασία αυτή παρουσιάζουμε ένα πρότυπο σύστημα διαχείρισης εξατομικευμένων καταλόγων διαδικτύου ορίζοντας τις προϋποθέσεις που πρέπει να πληρεί ώστε να είναι εύχρηστο και αποτελεσματικό. Το σύστημα αυτό έχει όλες τις δυνατότητες που έχουν τα εμπορικά αλλά και τα πρότυπα συστήματα διαχείρισης bookmarks. Επιπλέον διαθέτει καινοτόμες λειτουργίες που το καθιστούν μοναδικό. Παράλληλα παρουσιάζουμε αναλυτικά έναν πρότυπο αλγόριθμο κατάταξης, τον αλγόριθμο κατάταξης με βάση την συνάφεια των σελίδων με τις κατηγορίες στις οποίες ανήκουν. Τον αλγόριθμο αυτόν τον συγκρίνουμε με τον δημοφιλή αλγόριθμος γενικής κατάταξης το PageRank. Από το πείραμα που κάναμε προκύπτει ότι ο αλγόριθμος που προτείνουμε είναι πιο κατάλληλος για την ταξινόμηση των σελίδων σε θεματικές κατηγορίες από το PageRank. / The individualised lists of internet were presented almost simultaneously with the appearance of browser internets, and from then all browser incorporate simple systems of management of individualised lists. Annotation et visualisation interactives de documents hypermédias

Le développement du multimédia, des capacités de stockage et du matériel de numérisation permet de mettre à disposition sous une forme électronique un nombre toujours croissant de documents " matériels " (journaux, cartes, photographies, peintures, cahiers d'expérimentations, originaux d'œuvres littéraires, rapports, etc.). La numérisation, le stockage et la diffusion de ces matériaux sources ne posent aujourd'hui plus réellement problème. Néanmoins, il s'avère que les utilisateurs ont souvent des difficultés à exploiter ces documents en milieu informatique. Cet état de fait est la conséquence de plusieurs problèmes. Tout d'abord, peu d'outils logiciels permettent aux utilisateurs de réaliser les tâches qu'ils ont l'habitude d‘effectuer avec des documents papiers (annoter, comparer, associer des idées, etc.). Ensuite, l'accès à l'information dans un espace informationnel de vaste envergure s'avère être un problème non trivial. Les utilisateurs éprouvent des difficultés à trouver les données recherchées, à comprendre leur organisation et leurs relations, ainsi qu'à collecter et organiser celles jugées intéressantes afin de pouvoir les retrouver plus rapidement par la suite.<br />A cette problématique de l'utilisation des documents en milieu informatique, nous proposons deux approches complémentaires issues des domaines de l'interaction homme-machine et de la visualisation d'information.<br />La première approche repose sur le concept de lecture active qui vise à transformer le " lecteur " en " acteur " en lui permettant d'enrichir interactivement les documents qu'il est en train de lire par un ensemble de signes graphiques (surlignages, cerclages, etc.) et d'informations textuelles (notes, commentaires, etc.). L'idée consiste à permettre aux utilisateurs de construire leur propre système de repérage afin de faciliter la compréhension et la réutilisation des documents. Une attention particulière est portée à la manière d'associer ces méta-données " ajoutées " (que nous nommons, d'une manière générique, " annotations ") aux documents sources au moyen de liens hypertextes, ainsi qu'à leur codage informatique dans un format normalisé (dérivé de XML).<br />La seconde approche consiste à faciliter l'exploration d'espaces documentaires en exploitant les capacités perceptives et mémorielles humaines au moyen de techniques interactives de visualisation. Nous proposons tout d'abord un système de navigation qui repose sur un fort couplage entre vues globales et vues locales pour aider à trouver les documents. Les vues globales montrent l'organisation de l'espace d'information et en permettent un survol rapide. Elles sont utilisées pour atteindre des zones d'intérêts. Les vues locales présentent le contenu de plusieurs documents en contexte afin d'aider l'utilisateur à les comparer et à choisir celui qu'il va consulter. Nous proposons ensuite un environnement visuel de gestion de bookmarks dans le but de pouvoir retrouver le plus simplement possible les documents préalablement consultés. Les utilisateurs organisent leurs bookmarks de la même manière qu'ils le feraient avec un ensemble de documents papiers sur un bureau. Ils définissent interactivement leur propre organisation conceptuelle de l'espace documentaire en se basant sur des propriétés visuelles et spatiales. Ces propriétés aideront les utilisateurs à retrouver plus efficacement les documents sauvegardés par une stimulation de leurs capacités mémorielles.

The defined ecological discourses surrounding the proposed field, taking into account the social structure of the place, the creation of Units conservation and preparing the management plan for the same. It made use of field notes, multi languages, participant observation, valuing complementarity provides a contribution in environmental studies, and Popular Education in the history of the settlement and exploitation of the space Sabiaguaba. / A presente pesquisa em Educação ambiental Dialógica identifica os Marcadores sociais do discurso do lugar e a percepção dos mesmos sobre as demandas ambientais da Sabiaguaba, reconhece a cultura dos indivíduos, a experiência dos mesmos, sua interdependência com os ambientes naturais e a complexidade existente na relação entre homem natureza e cultura, privilegia as relações interculturais entre os autores epistêmicos, que se estabeleceram ao longo da tessitura do trabalho tracejando seu caráter Eco Relacional e eminentemente qualitativo. Interliga os dados coletados e analisa os mesmos na sua integralidade, fundamentando-se na etnografia cultural proposta por James Clifford e Nestor Garcia Canclini, os definiu discursos ecológicos circundantes no campo proposto, levando em conta o tecido social do lugar, a criação das Unidades de Conservação e a preparação para o plano de manejo das mesmas.
