Development of identity of Latvians living in the Lithuanian–Latvian border region in 1918–1940 / Latvių, Lietuvos–Latvijos pasienio gyventojų, tapatumo raida 1918–1940 m

Akmenytė, Vilma 29 December 2008 (has links)
Each state has its borders. Emphasis on territorial integrity is one of the key components in a definition of a state. Therefore, borders represent a natural part of a state indicating what belongs to the state and what is outside the boundaries of its territory. At the same time existing of a border poses both legal and ethnic problems to population of border regions. Though those problems are not specific to border regions and are faced by people living deeper inside a state, however, population of border regions experience consequences of these problems much more acutely and painfully than people living in the middle of a country. What does it mean to be an inhabitant of a border zone? What does it mean to be a “Lithuanian”? Who is “Latvian”? How did a “Latvian” become a “Lithuanian”? How citizenship is contrasted with nationality? What caused a decision to take Lithuanian or Latvian citizenship? What caused a decision to become a member of one nation or the other? Period 1918–1940 has been selected because the most important moment in formation of national and citizen identity was emergence of the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Latvia and setting of the administrative boundary between these two republics in 1921. Identity as such is not finite; therefore it is important to evaluate factors, which in time had determined decisions of people living in the border region to take Latvian or Lithuanian citizenship, and to analyze the relationship between a... Valstybės teritoriją riboja sienos, kurios žymį vietą ties, kuria baigiasi vienos valstybės galia ir prasideda kitos. Disertacijos tyrimo objektas – latviai, Lietuvos–Latvijos pasienio gyventojai, jų tautinio tapatumo raida. Darbo tikslas: išanalizuoti Lietuvos–Latvijos (iki 1918 m. XX a. trečiojo dešimtmečio pradžioje... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Möjligheter och problem för en cross-borderregion – En fallstudie av Greater Copenhagen and Skåne Committee

Silic, Tea, Stigertsson, Alexander January 2016 (has links)
Regional planning has become an important part of today’s politics. As a result of the ongoing globalization municipalties and cities now have to form partnerships accross borders to be able to compete for resources, residents and businesses establishments. Oresund collaboration was initiated when Denmark and Sweden formed The Oresund Committee, which today is called Greater Copenhagen and Skane Committee. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate what the cooperation actually means to three selected municipalties in the region, how the region is perceived by media and how it is portrayed in planning documents. This has been done through a case study.Since the region is a cross-border region it struggles with problems that a region located in one country does not. The biggest issue that we have identified has to do with different laws and economic systems that exists within the region. This has affected the many residents living in Oresund, especially those who travel across the border on a daily basis. Another problem that has arisen concerns the undefined identity that is created by politicians and authorities, which becomes a problem when the citizens do not perceive themselves as a part of the mutual region. Furthermore we have identified an issue that affects the matter of democracy and the recently established border controls. This issue has become apparent due to low priority from the government and the politicians of the capital of Sweden. There are elements that demonstrate that some people consider Stockholm to be the most important actor for Sweden’s future growth, which leads to unequal distribution of power. This brings us to the final problem, dealing with the decision to impose border controls between Sweden and Denmark. The border controls have proven to be very costly for the society and for the travellers who lose a lot of time because of the inflexibility of the way the border controls are carried out. In the final section of this bachelor thesis we discuss what needs to be accomplished to be able to create a better future for Greater Copenhagen and Skane Committee.

On the Fence

Medrano, Estevan 12 1900 (has links)
Living the vast majority of my life in an area that celebrates diversity but thrives because of illegal cross-border activities (undocumented workers, drug imports) at times the distance between the United States and Mexico is in fact as thin as the width of a fence. Though it is typical for a filmmaker to hope to present a unique take on a subject, given how I have seen the topics of immigration and the perspective of the purpose of homeland security portray, I am confident that there is an opportunity to show these issues in a more personal, less aggressive light with the use of first person accounts instead of a dependence on the most violent aspects of these topics. The main subject will give character to this agency by blurring the lines of his life as an agent and as a citizen.

Modeling the U.S. border patrol Tucson sector for the deployment and operations of border security forces

Ordonez, Karina J. 03 1900 (has links)
CHDS State/Local / Illegal cross-border activity is a severe homeland defense and security problem along the international Southwest border. The issue of illegal human smuggling is not new to the United States-Mexico border or to law enforcement agencies; however, the phenomenon is rising and human smugglers are adjusting to law enforcement tactics. This thesis has three objectives. First, it describes and identifies the fundamental dimensions of U.S. Border Patrol operations in the busiest, most vulnerable section of the border. Second, it integrates prominent border security factors into a mathematical predictive model -- the Arizona-Sonora Border (ASB) Model * that provides an illustration of possible border security operational strategies and the outcome apprehension probability of migrants given the implementation of various operational strategies. Last, this thesis seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of the complex dynamics along the USBP Tucson Sector. This picture highlights the primary challenges facing policymakers in developing innovative policies that will minimize illegal cross-border activity and secure the homeland. / Southwest Border Specialist, Arizona Office of Homeland Security
