Modernitet i det traditionella : kulturbyggen och gränser inom ett nordsvenskt område / Modernity in the traditional : culture builders and boundaries in northern Sweden

Sjöström, Lars Olov January 2007 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examines how modernisation affects and is affected by existing local culture and identity. It is about the relation between the social and mental barriers experienced, expressed and manifested in the social culture of local community, and modernisation’s dynamic powers over time. The thesis deals with different time periods from the 1800’s until today with regard to expressions and consequences of modernity. People during the societal transformation of Sweden in the 19th and 20th centuries are culturally depicted from a micro-perspective. An overall perspective for the analysis of modernity uses the concepts of basal and variable modernity, borrowed from the historian of ideas Sven-Eric Liedman. The perspective makes possible the separation between on the one hand the structural modernisation within the fields of economy, technology and natural sciences, and on the other hand the cultural modernity manifested in conceptions of the world, politics, existential viewpoints, aesthetic expressions and social culture. Within the first-mentioned fields, where basal modernity dominates, a uniform and cumulative developmental pattern emerges as well as an almost self-propelled continuity toward the next innovation or stage of development. Within the latter fields, however, a non-uniform pattern emerges, where modernisation is constantly the object of alternative interpretations and attitudes. This variable modernity is characterised by a cultural struggle between conflicting ideologies and strategies in relation to ongoing modernisation. Different individuals and groups position themselves between acceptance and resistance, progressiveness and the critique of civilisation, the preservation of traditions and the will to change. In this course of events new affinities and identifications, but also new dissociations and antagonisms are created in local social contexts. Modernity leads both to the obliteration of boundaries and to the emergence of new social and mental boundaries. This process can also lead to existing geographical borders being charged with a new ideological content so their importance is revitalised.

Com isso, permite resgatar a crítica radical e revolucionária instaurada por Marx e, portanto, demonstrar que mais que interpretar, precisamos transformar o mundo / Several considerations were made on Sociology as a private discipline, but most of them starting from the sociological perspective itself. We believe that this will lead to a vicious cycle that would not allow a radical analysis of sociology as a scientific proposal. The studies Marxists, most of them were applied by an epistemological perspective - which is characterized by shifting the priority of knowledge for the subject instead of recognizing the ontological priority of the object. For these reasons, we propose an explanation at the exhibition of György Lukács critique of sociology. This is characterized by the rescue of the ontological perspective in Marx, namely the recognition that the Marxian framework is built upon an ontology of social being founded in the work. Thus, the radical critique has rescued and brought revolutionary Marx and, therefore, show that more than interpret, we must transform the world

Our proposition is that, on the one hand, we will find alternatives to the dramatic form and, on the other, remaining formal aspects of the bourgeois drama. Our goal is to make explicit, by analyzing the formal elements of the plays, how and why these elements take distance from the dramatic literary genre and approach the epic one, so that their reasons can be investigated.

As a corpus, we use one of the works of E?a de Queiroz, The City and the Mountains. Served as theoretical references the Claude Levi-Strauss s concept of universal culinary and the Jean Claude Fischler s concept of specific culinary who understands food as a cultural system which includes representations, beliefs and practices of a specific group. After the initial reading of the novel and construction of a file containing general information of the work, categories designed for elaboration of a material for analysis were these: work, characters, food, intellectuals and geographies. We realized the culinary as an epicenter for understanding the culture of a specific group: in this case, the bourgeois. We proposed a quaternary model for systematizing it: this bourgeois cuisine highlights the technique, has affection for what is rare and/or expensive but still consume it with temperance, establishing a new relationship with the use of time and, finally, it is the one that opens the ritual that involves frequent restaurants and cafes. The exercise of thinking the bourgeois cuisine through the literature suggests that the art may work on increase the comprehensive capabilities of nutritionists, professionals who deal with a complex object in your practice: the food / Utilizar a literatura para problematizar o tema da alimenta??o, propriamente a cozinha burguesa, foi o prop?sito deste trabalho.

Amelia Coelho Rodrigues Maciel 20 July 2016 (has links)

Korb, Johanna Adeline 30 November 2012 (has links)
ENGLISH: The novel, Magersfonteint, o Magersfontein! by Etienne Leroux is an example of social realism and of critical realism, with satire as medium and irony as point of view. Thus the novel highlights the direction taken in social development in modern times, and also attacks those bourgeois characteristics that act as corrosive elements in this development. These characteristics form the butt of the satire in the novel. The novel is based on the Battle of Magersfontein 1899, and the attempt of a TV- and filmgroup to re-enact this battle on the actual terrain. Depicting the heroes who took part in the batt1e the author has pitched prototypes of the descendants of these heroes. The barren flats of Magersfontein, symbol of the malaise of our times, form the background against which these sterile characters move, partrayed as they are to represent aspects of borgeois society in themes, philosophies, groups and even institutions. In this manner Leroux exposes the causes for the existing malaise as being pettiness, self-deceit, wishful thinking, snobbery, hypocrisy and greed. The book, however, ends on a positive note, with the possibility of the complete restoration of man in a fleeting glimpse of the once desolate valley now looking fertile, filled with beauty and blessed with rain. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Afrikaans / unrestricted

A produção de sentidos para as obras é realizada a partir de uma orientação teórica e metodológica feminista e pós estruturalista, apresentada, principalmente, nos escritos de Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Suely Rolnik, Rosi Braidotti, Norma Telles, Tania Swain, Margareth Rago e Michelle Perrot / Abstract: This research addresses the artistic production of Louise Bourgeois, focusing on the corporal forms expressed in in her pieces. It pertains the perception of how her art enables the possibility to criticize the phallogocentric model of feminine and, simultaneously, allows the creation of multiple forms on the women subjectivity. The production of meanings for her works is accomplished trough a theoretical and methodological feminist and post structuralist orientation, presented, mainly, in the writings of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Suely Rolnik, Rosi Braidotti, Norma Telles, Tania Swain, Margareth Rago and Michelle Perrot / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestra em História

The unending cycle of political violence in haiti a case study of the 1991 coup d'etat

Eliacin Mars, Lourdes 01 December 2012 (has links)
Deye mo-n se mo-n is a proverb in Haiti that roughly translates to "Beyond the mountains, more mountains." This saying holds a deep meaning to the Haitian peoples, who have lived through unrelenting violence and poverty. In its 200 years of independence, Haiti's inhabitants have seldom known a decade without political violence. Like the chain of mountains, political violence in Haiti seems to go on forever with no end in sight. Not only are the devastating effects of violence felt within politics, but also in the economic and social sectors of the country. The collapse of these sectors has created a predatory democracy which fails to provide for the population but rather enriches political elites who fight for the control of power and ignore their civic duties. The result of the political infighting, corruption, and weak governance has left Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A recent conflict which continues to have negative effects in the country is the 1991 military coup d'etat. The source of the coup was the political classes' constant fight for the control of power. The consequences of the coup are the collapse of the sectors previously mentioned. This has led to a country's struggle to reestablish functioning political, economic, and social institutions. Through secondary literary sources, online journals, and biographies, the causes and negative effects of the coup will be explored in hopes of illustrating the overall proximate and underlying causes of political violence in Haiti. This research will eventually lead to the exploration of different institutional reforms which needs to be enforced to break the cycle of violence.

Gratton, Julie 07 1900 (has links)
This master's thesis is a study of the French born American artist Louise Bourgeois' critical review. More precisely, it considers the artist’s progress from her beginnings as an American sculptor in the forties to her critical but albeit late public recognition as an important figure in the art of the second half of the twentieth century. From a historiographical perspective, and working with texts dealing with modern sculpture in the U.S.A., feminism in the visual arts and more specifically the career of Bourgeois, we want to examine the situation of this artist amidst the different interpretations of her artworks. This study proposes to look at the subtleties in the construction of a web of interpretations. This web, we will see, is as complex as the production of an artist who created for more than seventy years. The intent of the first chapter is to grasp the position occupied by Bourgeois in some of the major texts constituting the history of modern sculpture. This overview will lead us to the second chapter where we will analyze the manner Bourgeois' work is addressed by feminist literature and practice. In this context, and by the fact that Bourgeois revealed tragic aspects of her childhood at the turn of the eighties, we will seek to understand the changes in the way her work has been perceived. The third chapter focuses on the study of the artist’s national and international recognition in parallel to the monographs having her as their main subject. Those texts, which have been often tied to biographical writing, reassess in a certain way the old concept of the mythical artist.
