Salvador

A comparison of Reduced Beam Section moment connection and Kaiser Bolted Bracket® moment connections in steel Special Moment Frames

Johnson, Curtis Mathias January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science / Kimberly W. Kramer / Of seismic steel lateral force resisting systems in practice today, the Moment Frame has most diverse connection types. Special Moment frames resist lateral loads through energy dissipation of the inelastic deformation of the beam members. The 1994 Northridge earthquake proved that the standard for welded beam-column connections were not sufficient to prevent damage to the connection or failure of the connection. Through numerous studies, new methods and standards for Special Moment Frame connections are presented in the Seismic Design Manual 2nd Edition to promote energy dissipation away from the beam-column connection. A common type of SMF is the Reduce Beams Section (RBS). To encourage inelastic deformation away from the beam-column connection, the beam flange’s dimensions are reduced a distance away from the beam-column connection; making the member “weaker” at that specific location dictating where the plastic hinging will occur during a seismic event. The reduction is usually taken in a semi-circular pattern. Another type of SMF connection is the Kaiser Bolted Bracket® (KBB) which consists of brackets that stiffen the beam-column connection. KBB connections are similar to RBS connections as the stiffness is higher near the connection and lower away from the connection. Instead of reducing the beam’s sectional properties, KBB uses a bracket to stiffen the connection. The building used in this parametric study is a 4-story office building. This thesis reports the results of the parametric study by comparing two SMF connections: Reduced Beam Section and Kaiser Bolted Brackets. This parametric study includes results from three Seismic Design Categories; B, C, and D, and the use of two different foundation connections; fixed and pinned. The purpose of this parametric study is to compare member sizes, member forces, and story drift. The results of Seismic Design Category D are discussed in depth in this thesis, while the results of Seismic Design Category B and C are provided in the Appendices.

Geometrické postupy v řízení robotických hadů / Geometric approach in robotic snake motion control

Vechetová, Jana January 2018 (has links)

Analysis and optimal design of a titanium aircraft bracket using topology optimization

Curwen, Vincent, Saxin, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
Sustainable engineering within product development is becoming increasingly important with the ever-growing amounts of resources used to sustain the human way of life in modern times. An effective way of helping to deal with this problem is to reduce the resources used in products and components across the world. This thesis explores the effectiveness of the topology optimization method in achieving significant material reductions whilst maintaining structural strength and integrity when designing an aircraft component. The part is an engine handling mounting bracket which will be optimized to be produced by additive manufacturing, and so restrictions imposed by traditional manufacturing methods are not considered, allowing for larger material reductions to be achieved. The original bracket part was provided by GE Electric, and the computer software Abaqus computer aided engineering with integrated TOSCA was used to solve the problem. Two trials were conducted, with the first being used to gain knowledge and understanding of the optimization features of the software. The basic requirements for the optimized design were that it should be able to withstand four given static load cases without undergoing plastic deformation, and these load cases were applied separately in trial 1 for simplicity. The second trial was conducted with a higher complexity, utilising multi-objective topology optimization which allowed the load cases to be weighted individually whilst being applied simultaneously during optimization. The resulting bracket part that was created with the help of the optimized topology from trial 2 reduced the volume of the original part by over 75%. This also left potential for further material reductions as the optimized part did not undergo plastic deformation when subject to any of the four load cases of the study. In conclusion, topology optimization seems to be extremely helpful when designing components that have clearly defined load cases, producing results that designers and engineers can have confidence in. The method does however have its flaws, such as difficulties in utilising the optimized topology directly to create a computer aided design part file. The post-processing process needed to achieve such a part is also time-consuming although it must be implemented to create a digital part that can be analysed and verified by FEA.

Indirect Bonding Method: in vitro Comparison of the Shear Bond Strength between Metallic Orthodontic Brackets and Different Porcelain Surface Preparations

Mai, Stéphanie H. 04 1900 (has links)
Background : Bond strength at the metal-ceramic interface of auto-polymerizing resins used in orthodontic indirect bonding has not yet been evaluated and a literature-based clinical protocol is lacking. Goals : 1) To compare shear bond strength (SBS) between metal brackets and differently treated porcelain surfaces; 2) To suggest efficient and predictable chairside approaches. Materials and methods : Ninety leucite discs (6 groups; n=15/group) were prepared following 6 combinations of mechanical (+/- bur roughening) and chemical (hydrofluoric acid, primer, silane) treatments. Metal brackets with custom composite resin Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, California) bases were bonded with the adhesive resin system Sondhi A+B Rapid Set (3M Unitek, Monrovia, California). Samples were stored (H2O/24hrs), thermocycled (500 cycles) and tested (Instron, Norwood, Massachusetts). Maximum SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were collected for each sample. ANOVAs were performed on ranks since data was not normally distributed, and then adjusted with the post-hoc Tukey method. A Kruskall-Wallis, a Mann Whitney U pairwise comparison and a Weibull analysis were also performed. Results : SBS medians of groups ranged from 17.0 MPa (- bur + hydrofluoric acid) to 26.7MPa (- bur + hydrofluoric acid + silane). Bur roughening did not affect bond strength. The chemical preparation of (- bur + primer + silane) showed statistically significant higher SBS than (- bur + hydrofluoric acid) preparation (p<0,05), while having similar SBS to the popular recommended protocol (- bur + hydrofluoric acid + silane). ARI scores were statistically significant lower in group (- bur + hydrofluoric acid) with p<0,05, while all other 5 groups were not different from each other. Percentage of porcelain damage in these 5 groups were very high at 80-100%. Conclusion : All the tested surface preparations combinations provided clinically adequate adhesion for orthodontic tooth movement. A silane and primer combination for porcelain surface preparation is clinically attractive as it is safe and simple and provides great adhesion for orthodontic tooth movement. It is wise to warn patients that there is a risk of porcelain fractures when debonding brackets. If one prefers to avoid porcelain fracture at all cost, one may treat porcelain with hydrofluoric acid only.
