Interação trófica entre Coleoptera e basidiomas de Polyporales e Hymenochaetales (Fungi : Basidiomycota) / Trophic interaction between Coleoptera and Basidiomes of Polyporales and Hymenochaetales (Fungi: Basidiomycota)Graf, Letícia Vanessa January 2008 (has links)
Fungivory is the consumption of any part of the fungi organism and just a few studies were done about the trophic interactions of its reproductive structures, so called basidiomes, and insects. Even though this is a disseminated habit among Coleoptera, which has many obligated fungivores families, little is known about its community organization. However, there have been works about feeding preferences and oviposing sites of some fungi species. Some of the questions of this study refer to richness and specificity of fungivores beetles on their host. It was also investigated the influence of fungi taxonomy, basidiomes consistency and hyphal system for the selection process of the beetle species, as well as the importance of the taxonomic position of the beetles regarding the host group they use and the basidiome´s consistency. The basidiomes of Polyporales and Hymenochaetales Orders were collected in an Araucaria angustifolia forest of Rio Grande do Sul State. It was obtained 376 fungal individuals, which were kept in the laboratory, individually separated in containers for three months, while the newly emerged beetles were captured, and the fungi were dissected afterwards. All individuals of fungi that had associations (207) were identified (40 species). It was found 447 occurcences of Coleoptera, which were classified in 90 morphospecies belonging to 20 families, with Ciidae and Staphylinidae being the most abundant. The basidiomes where classified by its consistency, following a longevity and hardness gradient. Beetle richness varied among fungal species and no factors that might influence the richness variation in fungi was found. Its specificity did not seem to be related to the longevity of the basidiomes. It was also verified that the fungus taxonomy as well as the consistency of its basidiomes demonstrated some importance for the process of host selection. Regarding the Coleoptera taxonomy, it was not verified that the more phylogenetic related ones use a more similar group of hosts or basidiomes that have similar consistency. This demonstrates that the ability to feed on the same species is not so related to the phylogeny of fungivore beetles as it occurs with herbivores.

Previous issue date: 2009-03-25 / The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the friction resistances among conventional steel-ligated and self-ligating aesthetic brackets with different retangular stainless steel archwires sizes at zero and three degrees angulation. 120 brackets of 6 commercial brands (Gemini, Clarity conventional, Transcend, Inspire, Clarity self-ligating, Damon self-ligating) where tested, 20 brackets of each brand. Two brackets were glued on a metallic plate, with angulations of zero and three degrees between them. Retangular stainless steel archwires of 0.017 x 0.025 , 0.019 x 0.025 and 0.021 x 0.025 were tested on a "instron" universal essay machine. Variance analisys and Tukey tests (p<0,05) were run to compare brackets with different archwires sizes and angulation. The study demonstrated that at zero degree angulation the self-ligating brackets produced less friction in relation to convencional ligated bracket in all archwires sizes tested. Clarity self-ligating produces even less friction then aesthetic Damon, except with the 0.021 x 0.025 archwire, where both self-ligating brackets produced statisticly similar results. Inspire bracket had the least friction with 0.019 x0.025 and 0.021 x0.025 . Similar results were observed for the self-ligating brackets in relation to convencionals at three degrees angulation. Among the convencional steel-ligated brackets, Gemini, Clarity, Transcend and Inspire produced the higest friction resistances, in increasing order. In conclusion, the angulation between the brackets increases significatively the friction forces.

Estudo in vitro de braquetes ortodônticos: avaliação biomecânica e liberação de íons /Guimarães, Andréia Cecilia May. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: Orthodontics brackets have been made from a variety of materials such as metals, ceramics and polymers. Among all the metallic materials, stainless steel are the most popular due low cost associated with reasonable corrosion resistance. In oral environment, they are subject aggressive fluids and pH variation can be leave nickel ions release to body tissues and fluids. Surface modifications of these alloys have been realized using mechanical, electrochemical, chemical and physical treatments. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) prepared by deposition techniques have very attractive properties such as high hardness, chemical inertness and biocompatibility. In this in vitro study, a-C:H films were deposited on orthodontics brackets by r.f. plasmaenhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) from inhibited nickel ions release. After treatment, brackets were bonded to bovine incisors with a composite resin and samples were immersed in physiological serum for 30 days at 37 ºC. During immersion time samples were brushed and/or immersed in mouthwashes daily. Prior immersion, the structural arrangement of films was probed by Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurements were carried out in order to evaluate the wettability of surface. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to measure the release of elements from the samples and SEM for surface analysis. Results showed that the coating prevents Ni release of brackets for statistic test and nickel was released for others groups. Analysis of variance no indicated significance different among groups after shear testing. / Orientadora: Ana Paula Rosifini Alves Claro / Coorientador: Maria Cristina Rosifini Alves Resende / Banca: Sandra Giacomi Scheneider / Banca: Maria da Glória Chiarello Mattos / Mestre

On Knots and DNAAhlquist, Mari January 2017 (has links)
Knot theory is the mathematical study of knots. In this thesis we study knots and one of its applications in DNA. Knot theory sits in the mathematical field of topology and naturally this is where the work begins. Topological concepts such as topological spaces, homeomorphisms, and homology are considered. Thereafter knot theory, and in particular, knot theoretical invariants are examined, aiming to provide insights into why it is difficult to answer the question "How can we tell knots appart?". In knot theory invariants such as the bracket polynomial, the Jones polynomial and tricolorability are considered as well as other helpful results like Seifert surfaces. Lastly knot theory is applied to DNA, where it will shed light on how certain enzymes interact with the genome.

Rankin-Cohen Brackets for Hermitian Jacobi Forms and Hermitian Modular FormsMartin, James D. (James Dudley) 12 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, we define differential operators for Hermitian Jacobi forms and Hermitian modular forms over the Gaussian number field Q(i). In particular, we construct Rankin-Cohen brackets for such spaces of Hermitian Jacobi forms and Hermitian modular forms. As an application, we extend Rankin's method to the case of Hermitian Jacobi forms. Finally we compute Fourier series coefficients of Hermitian modular forms, which allow us to give an example of the first Rankin-Cohen bracket of two Hermitian modular forms. In the appendix, we provide tables of Fourier series coefficients of Hermitian modular forms and also the computer source code that we used to compute such Fourier coefficients.

Lieovy grupy a jejich fyzikální aplikace / Lie groups and their physical applicationsKunz, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis I describe construction of Lie group and Lie algebra and its following usage for physical problems. To be able to construct Lie groups and Lie algebras we need define basic terms such as topological manifold, tensor algebra and differential geometry. First part of my thesis is aimed on this topic. In second part I am dealing with construction of Lie groups and algebras. Furthermore, I am showing different properties of given structures. Next I am trying to show, that there exists some connection among Lie groups and Lie algebras. In last part of this thesis is used just for showing how this apparat can be used on physical problems. Best known usage is to find physical symmetries to establish conservation laws, all thanks to famous Noether theorem.

Log-diversity and abundance of dead wood dependent bracket fungi and bryophytes, a comparison between spruce woodland key habitats and adjacent production forests in Östergötland, Sweden.Lundgren Lodetti, Mathilda January 2019 (has links)
Dead wood in forests are essential habitat for a wide range of fungal, insects, lichens and bryophyte species. The main threat to dead wood dependent species is lack of substrate, which aggravates their ability to reach and colonize a new substrate. Inventories of woodland key habitats (WKHs) is a method to map forests with high biological value in Sweden, and these areas may benefit dead wood dependent species. The aim of this study was to compare spruce dominated WKHs with adjacent production spruce forests (APFs), regarding (1) log diversity, (2) log characteristics and (3) abundance of selected species on logs. The study was conducted in Östergötland County in Sweden, seven spruce WKHs (≥ 60% spruce) and seven APFs of three different types (two clear-cuts, two dominated by trees < 20 cm and three dominated by trees > 20 cm) were investigated. Data of eight wood dependent species (three bryophytes and five bracket fungi), log diversity, six log characteristics and two environmental factors were collected. In a total area of 4.27 ha, 210 logs (105 logs in WKH and APF each) were studied and the results show that there were significantly higher amount of coarse logs, distribution area of species, number of logs/ha, diameter, decay class and humidity inside WKHs compared with APFs. The total distribution area of species was approximately 85% larger in WKHs. Bark cover was slightly less in WKHs and sun exposure was significantly higher and humidity was lower in clear-cuts. According to the current study, WKHs are important for conservation of wood depending species due to the higher amount and diversity of coarse dead wood. Furthermore, it is necessary to put aside larger amount of coarse dead wood inside production forests, together with changed logging techniques to increase the suitable substrate for dead wood dependent species.

Local controllability of affine distributionsAguilar, CESAR 12 January 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, we develop a feedback-invariant theory of local controllability for affine distributions. We begin by developing an unexplored notion in control theory that we call proper small-time local controllability (PSTLC). The notion of PSTLC is developed for an abstraction of the well-known notion of a control-affine system, which we call an affine system. Associated to every affine system is an affine distribution, an adaptation of the notion of a distribution. Roughly speaking, an affine distribution is PSTLC if the local behaviour of every affine system that locally approximates the affine distribution is locally controllable in the standard sense. We prove that, under a regularity condition, the PSTLC property can be characterized by studying control-affine systems.
The main object that we use to study PSTLC is a cone of high-order tangent vectors, or variations, and these are defined using the vector fields of the affine system. To better understand these variations, we study how they depend on the jets of the vector fields by studying the Taylor expansion of a composition of flows. Some connections are made between labeled rooted trees and the coefficients appearing in the Taylor expansion of a composition of flows. Also, a relation between variations and the formal Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff formula is established.
After deriving some algebraic properties of variations, we define a variational cone for an affine system and relate it to the local controllability problem. We then study the notion of neutralizable variations and give a method for constructing subspaces of variations.
Finally, using the tools developed to study variations, we consider two important classes of systems: driftless and homogeneous systems. For both classes, we are able to characterize the PSTLC property. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mathematics & Statistics) -- Queen's University, 2010-01-11 20:11:45.466
