Asteroseismology, Standard Candles and the Hubble Constant: What Is the Role of Asteroseismology in the Era of Precision Cosmology?

Neilson, Hilding R., Biesiada, Marek, Evans, Nancy Remage, Marconi, Marcella, Ngeow, Chow Choong, Reese, Daniel R. 03 March 2014 (has links)
Classical Cepheids form one of the foundations of modern cosmology and the extragalactic distance scale; however, cosmic microwave background observations measure cosmological parameters and indirectly the Hubble Constant, H 0, to unparalleled precision. The coming decade will provide opportunities to measure H0 to 2% uncertainty thanks to the Gaia satellite, JWST, ELTs and other telescopes using Cepheids and other standard candles. In this work, we discuss the upcoming role for variable stars and asteroseismology in calibrating the distance scale and measuring H0 and what problems exist in understanding these stars that will feed back on these measurements.

Investigation into the Short-term Effects of Chipped Branch Wood (CBW) on Soil Fertility, Plant Growth and Soil Microbiology in an Agricultural Context

Mercer, Theresa 09 1900 (has links)
The principal objective of this project was to evaluate the short-term effects of CBW incorporation into soil in terms of soil fertility, plant growth and soil microbiology. Treatments consisted of a control, standard woodchip treatment (incorporation rate of 150m3/ha), woodchip + woodland litter incorporation treatment (woodland litter incorporation of 10-20g/m2), woodchip + fertiliser treatment (KNO3 applied at 50kgN/ha at start and a continuous fertiliser application treatment) and double woodchip treatment. Standard soil NO-3 tests were conducted to determine soil fertility. To assess plant growth and development, plant DW, S:R DW and plant K levels were measured Finally, microbiological analyses were carried out through serial dilutions and plate counts, with in-depth microscopy. Results indicated that there were obvious differences between treatments throughout the study period. In all measurements, woodchip treatments were found to have significantly lower values than the control. The exception to the rule was the WC + fertiliser treatment (continuous complete nutrient fertiliser application), which showed comparable results with the control. The addition of woodland litter did not seem to affect any of the soil fertility, plant growth or microbial measurements. The differences between the unfertilised woodchip treatments and the control were explained by a general nutrient deficiency resulting from a ‘dilution effect’ to soil nutrients by adding woodchips. This was further exacerbated by immobilisation of nutrients from the micro-organisms in the soil.

Branch banking in California

Claypool, Burrus Everett 01 January 1930 (has links)
In this paper it is hoped to present an accurate account of branch banking conditions. as they exist in California, followed by an expression of the writer's views upon the subject which have come from an impartial consideration of the movement from several standpoints. Part one explains briefly the nature of branch banking , tells something of its importance and success in other countries and of its development in the United States. A discussion of the branch systems that are active in California and a detailed description of the origin, growth and importance of one large organization in the state gives an idea of the :prominence this movement is assuming. In part two the arguments for and against branch banking are presented and discussed from a theoretical basis, and also compared with the results of this type of banking a s reported by those who have had dealings with both unit and branch organizations. One difficulty confronting a study of this nature is the number of changes t hat are constantly taking place. Large banking systems are being consolidated into single organizations. Holding companies are formed to bring. important organizations, both unit and branch, under central control. In banking, as in other types of business, the movement is toward fewer and larger systems. Since this study was begun in 1928, a number of such changes have taken place. In all cases an attempt has been made to revise the material to conform with conditions as they existed January 1, 1930. Many times it has not been possible to determine completely the inter-corporate relations between large organizations. Much of the material for t his study has been taken from magazine articles written by bankers and students of banking problems. The daily newspapers have been another source. To date, very few books have been published which treat of this subject except in a very general way. It is hoped that some ideas have been developed which, while likely not new to those who have made studies of this subject, will be taken as an attempt on the part of the writer to present the strong and weak points of branch banking as he sees it.

Městská knihovna v Přerově / City Library of Přerov

Odstrčilík, Viktor January 2012 (has links)
The project is solving problem with Library in Prerov and its location on the site and connection to existing infrastructure. The project can be divided into three parts - urban solutions, architectural design and technical solutions. Urban solutions The area is currently degraded by uncontrolled parking of cars and too much communication. This causes confusion functioning of transport and pedestrians weaving between cars. Vegetation is devastated. Influencing factor is the close proximity to the City Circle, whose importance will increase, if realized "shortcut" towards the main railway and bus station. The proposal aims to improve respectively. build high-quality public space. The library building is defined as a solitaire, a reaction to the complicated and urban neighborhood. Its placed on the Conner for puting there some object of interrest. Communications are in the area reduced. Towards the north west corner of the square is placed park. The composition of park is as organic as a library. Architectural design The shape of the building based on the urban situation and the requirements to define solitary building. First shape was circle that was formed into the shape of an ellipse.Outer shell is made from glass up to ensure connected with outdoor space. Horizontal structure is dividet into two sections. The first floor is public place with cofe etc. The rest of floor space is used for administration and supply. The second floor is only for memebers of library. There is situated all books, study places and storages for books. Library has three departments. Department for adults, department for children and music department. The technical solution The basis of construction of the building are reinforced concrete columns with „extendet head“. These are placed on the base plate with the pilots.

Efficient Search for Cost-Performance Optimal Caches

Lima-Engelmann, Tobias January 2024 (has links)
CPU cache hierarchies are the central solution in bridging the memory wall. A proper understanding of how to trade-off their high cost against performance can lead to cost-savings without sacrificing performance.Due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, there exist a large number of configurations to investigate, making design space exploration slow and cumbersome. To improve this process, this Thesis develops and evaluates a model for optimally trading-off cost and performance of CPU cache hierarchies, named the Optimal Cache Problem (OCP), in the form of a Non-linear Integer Problem. A second goal of this work is the development of an efficient solver for the OCP, which was found to be a branch & bound algorithm and proven to function correctly. Experiments were conducted to empirically analyse and validate the model and to showcase possible use-cases. There, it was possible to ascribe the model outputs on measurable performance metrics. The model succeeded in formalising the inherent trade-off between cost and performance in a way that allows for an efficient and complete search of the configuration space of possible cache hierarchies. In future work, the model needs to be refined and extended to allow for the simultaneous analysis of multiple programs.

Hydrostatic Drive System Design

Greenberg, Leslie S. January 1970 (has links)

A solution to an industrial problem of designing a hydrostatic drive system for logging vehicles is presented. A computer program using Land and Doig's method of Branch and Bound Mixed Integer Programming is used to obtain an optimal solution to the problem. A comprehensive users guide to allow the use of the program by unsophisticated users is provided.

An attempted alternate method of solution using the Gomory method of Integer Programming is presented and reasons for its failure discussed.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)
