Testicular development in bulls

Bagu, Edward Tshima 02 January 2007 (has links)
In the present study our objectives were (1) to follow the temporal patterns of testicular LH and FSH receptor (LH-R and FSH-R) concentrations and affinity (Ka) during sexual maturation in bulls, to see if such patterns could explain the control of rapid testicular growth that occurs after 25 weeks of age, when serum gonadotropin concentrations are low; (2) to see if transformation growth factors (TGF- alpha and beta 1, 2 and 3) and interleukins (IL-1 and IL-6) are produced in the developing bovine testis and if their concentrations change during development; (3) to see if the onset of puberty could be hastened by treating bull calves subcutaneously (sc) with 3 mg of bLH (n=6) or 4 mg of bFSH (n=6) once every 2 days, from 4 to 8 weeks after birth. Mean LH-R concentrations decreased from 13 to 25 weeks of age and increased to 56 weeks of age (P<0.05). LH-RKa decreased from 9 to 17 weeks of age, increased to 29 weeks and declined to 33 weeks of age (P<0.05). FSH-R concentrations declined from 17 to 25 weeks of age then increased to 56 weeks of age (P<0.05). FSH-RKa increased from 17 to 25 weeks of age (P<0.05). Testicular TGF-alpha concentrations increased from 13 to 17 weeks of age, decreased to 21 weeks and from 33 to 56 weeks of age (P<0.05). Testicular TGF-beta 1 concentrations decreased from 17 to 21 weeks of age, increased to 25 weeks and decreased from 25 to 29 weeks of age (P<0.05). Testicular TGF-beta 2 concentrations increased from 5 to 17 weeks of age, decreased to 21 weeks, increased to 25 weeks and decreased at 29 weeks of age (P<0.05). Testicular TGF-beta 3 concentrations increased from 13 to 17 weeks of age, decreased to 21 weeks of age and from 25 to 29 weeks of age (P<0.05). Mean testicular IL-1 alpha concentrations decreased from 5 to 9 weeks of age and 13 to 21 weeks of age (P<0.01) while mean testicular IL-1 beta concentrations decreased from 13 to 17 weeks and 29 to 33 weeks of age (P<0.01). Mean IL-1 bioactivity increased from 13 to 17 weeks of age, decreased to 21 weeks, increased to 25 weeks, decreased to 29 weeks and decreased from 33 to 56 weeks of age (P<0.05). Mean testicular IL-6 concentrations decreased (P<0.05) from 9 to 13 weeks of age, increased (P<0.05) to 21 weeks, decreased (P<0.05) to 25 weeks of age, increased (P<0.05) to 29 weeks and decreased (P<0.01) to 56 weeks of age.
We concluded that high concentrations of gonadotropin receptors might be critical to initiate postnatal testis growth and support it after 25 weeks of age in the face of low serum gonadotropin concentrations. Testicular TGF-alpha concentrations were higher in calves than adults while concentrations of TGF-beta and IL-1 were higher in the early postnatal period than the peripubertal period. The changes in testicular concentrations of TGFs and ILs led us to suggest a possible local regulatory role in development. Testicular IL-6 concentrations were higher in prepubertal calves than adults. Treatment of bull calves with bFSH from 4 to 8 weeks of age increased testicular growth (SC), hastened the onset of puberty (SC ≥ 28 cm), and enhanced spermatogenesis.

Market efficiency in the portfolio strategy of technical indicators in the bull and bear stock markets

Chang, Tze-Wei 26 June 2012 (has links)
The study uses Moving Average, On Balance Volume, and KD (Stochastic Oscillator) to analyze that the technical analysis in which the bull or bear stock markets is efficiency. Also, verifies the changes of market efficiency before and after the financial crisis and whether it can earn excess returns or not by using technical analysis. That is, the returns earned by using technical analysis significantly greater than buy and hold which means the efficiency of technical analysis. Nevertheless, the study also aims to realize that whether the returns of the portfolio of technical indicators better than unit indicator. The companies in our samples are selected by the size of market value top 30 companies in the industries of electronic and finance in order to avoid the effect of market micro structure. Our results are as follows: (1) The returns in bear market are significantly higher than bull market by using MA6-144. (2) The MA6-72 and MA6-144 of financial stock before financial crisis, the returns of technical analysis are significantly better than buy and hold. In the other hand, in the electronic stock, we can use MA6-22-250, KD, and OBV to beat the buy and hold strategy and verify that the market efficiency does not exist. (3) The returns which combine of KD and OBV indicators are significantly higher than KD.

Crossing borders despite conflict : The role of communication routes

Mohlin, Henrik, Muratovic, Fazila January 2007 (has links)

Can cross-border interaction: interpersonal, economic, and otherwise, help ease relations between neighbouring political entities facing conflicts of interest and other differences?

1. How and why are border crossing communication routes created and maintained?

2. Under what circumstances are they used and how?

3. In what ways do they alter the conditions of a conflict between the parties that they link?

4. How do governments relate to the communication route and in what ways do they fit it into their policies?

Seeking to reconcile the theories of the international system advanced by Hedley Bull and John W. Burton, we conduct a comparative case study, based on contemporary media and scholarship, of the situations regarding Senegal and the Gambia, as well as the two de facto (if not de jure) republics of Cyprus to answer these questions. Having sought to estimate the causes and effects of border crossing, we find that host factors, in particular divergent economies and the utilization of international partners, may in fact come to stem from the issues of border-crossing activity and contribute to complicating existing conflicts rather than resolve them.

Skandinavijos ir Baltijos šalių akcijų rinkų cikliškumo įvertinimas / Assessment of Scandinavian and Baltic stock market cycles

Chackevič, Marija 18 August 2008 (has links)
The history of stock markets in Baltic states is short, whereas analysis of stock market cycles requires longer time series data. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to find out whether the behavior of stock market in above mentioned countries is similar to Scandinavian stock market changes. In theoretical chapter of paper work characteristics and conditions of stock market cycles were examined to determine similarities or differences in analyzed countries. Second chapter studies economic background and identifies stock market cycles using NBER method. Three hypotheses were raised based on three aspects of stock market cycles: stock market cycle characteristics, correlations of stock indices’ changes and economic background in light of stock cycles’ peaks. Only second and third hypotheses were proved. Assessing all three hypotheses Scandinavian stock market history is not suitable to make prognosis for stock markets cycles in Baltic states because of lots of differences.

DNA fingerprinting of Alberta bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) populations

Groft, Donald G., University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 1997 (has links)
Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) populations from Alberta river drainage systems were compared using molecular techniques. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP's) within the NDI and ND5/6 regions of the mitochondrial genome were observed. In addition, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA profiles (RAPD's) from total genomic DNA extracts were compared. Interdrainage comparisons using mtDNA revealed significant population heterogeneity among Alberta bull trout. Percent sequence divergence in mtDNA ranged from 0.14% to 0.92%. Most fish in each population were composed of a small number of common haplotypes, and the remaining fish displayed rare or locally unique haplotypes. RAPD profiles were used to calculate genetic distance values for Alberta, Canada and Montana, U.S.A. populations. Both Nei and Cavalli-Sforza distance values were used to generate neighbor-joining, FITCH and KITSCH distance trees. Two genetically distinct groups of bull trout were revealed by the RAPD analysis and the possiblity that post-glacial bull trout populations are derived from two separate refugia is suggested. / xvii, 161 leaves : ill. ; 28 cm.

Pinched bellies and a hell of a fight : the battle at Brawner Farm / Battle at Brawner Farm

Gaff, Alan D. January 1980 (has links)
This thesis examined the movements of Rufus King's Federal division during a portion of the Second Manassas Campaign. With an emphasis on the role of John Gibbon's brigade, this study concentrated on the battle fought on the evening of August 28, 1862 near Groveton, Virginia between King's division and two Confederate divisions under Stonewall Jackson. Events leading up to file battle, poor cooperation between the Union generals and the faulty deployment by Jackson were stressed, as was the severity of the fighting. The withdrawal of King's division following the battle was portrayed as an important strategic error which allowed the two wings of the Confederate army to unite the following day. Although the Union troops fought Jackson's larger force to a draw, poor leadership by the Union generals resulted in tide loss of the advantages gained by the fighting. The Battle at Brawner Farm was an important event in the campaign, although it has generally been overlooked by historians.

Darbo tikslas: įvertinti skirtingais racionais šertų veislinių bulių spermos kokybę. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Išnagrinėti ir įvertinti skirtingus veislinių bulių racionus; 2. Nustatyti tiriamųjų bulių spermos kokybę; 3. Įvertinti skirtingų racionų įtaką veislinių bulių spermos kokybiniams rodikliams. Išvados: 1. B fermos buliai reproduktoriai gavo 16,4 MJ AE, 52,35 žaliųjų baltymų, 20,66 g fosforo, 40,9 mg vario, 859,2 mg cinko, 28290 TV vitamino D bei 122700 TV vitamino A daugiau nei A fermos buliai, kur šios medžiagos yra ypač svarbios reprodukcinei sistemai ir spermos kokybei. 2. A fermoje laikomų bulių išskirtas spermos tūris buvo 5,60 (±0,11) ml, koncentracija 1287,61 (±38,04) mln/cm3, gyvybingų spermatozoidų 81,22 (±0,57) proc., tiesiai judančių spermatozoidų 65,73 (±0,76) proc. B fermoje laikomų bulių vidutinis išskiriamas spermos tūris buvo 8,50 (±0,25) ml, koncentracija 1371,54 (±67,07) mln/cm3, gyvybingų spermatozoidų 80,13 (±0,37) proc, tiesiai judančių spermatozoidų 67,81 (±0,47) proc. 3. B fermoje laikomų bulių išskirtas spermos tūris buvo 2,90 ml (P<0,001), koncentracija – 84,92 mln/cm3 (P>0,05), tiesiai judančių spermatozoidų – 2,07 proc. didesnis (P>0,05) nei A fermoje laikomų bulių. Vienintelis priešingai rodęs rodiklis, t.y. gyvybingi spermatozoidai buvo 1,09 proc. (P<0,05) mažesnis už A fermos bulių. 4. Bulių davusių iki 4 ml spermos kiekį, koncentracija vidutiniškai nuo 1351,11(P<0,001) (A buliai) ir 2218,25 (P<0,001) (B buliai) sumažėjo iki 1097,43 (P<0,001)... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The aim of this research is evaluate the quality of bull semen, that are fed different diets. Research goal of the paper: 1. Analyze and evaluate different breeding bull rations; 2. Analyze bull’s semen quality; 3. Evaluate the influence of different diets on breeding bull semen quality (semen volume, concentration, percent viable sperm, directly moving spermatozoa percent). The results of different bull’s diet show that bulls of farm B got more mineral and vitamin needed for reproductive system than bulls from farm A. The breeding bulls of farm B were given 16.4 MJ 52.35 crude protein, 20.66 g of phosphorus, 40.9 mg of copper, 859.2 mg of zinc, 28,290 IU of vitamin D and 122 700 IU of vitamin A more than bulls from farm A. This material is particularly important for the reproductive system and sperm quality. Breeding bull’s sperm quality indicators showed that the semen characteristics (volume, concentration, and right-moving sperm) were on average superior to those bulls whose diets were additionally given mineral - vitamin supplements. The semen quality of bulls is changing dependent on different bull semen volume released. It showed that increasing volume of the sperm determine decreasing in sperm concentration mln/cm3.

The Red Bull as community theatre in Clerkenwell /

Richards, Keith Owen. January 1997 (has links)
Recent criticism has cast the suburban playhouses of Early Modern London as marginalised institutions, in at least a topographic if not a symbolic sense. This thesis will contend that marginality is a relative term, and that for the inhabitants of the suburb, of Clerkenwell, the salient social function of the Red Bull theatre was not to serve the City as a site for licence, but to provide a neighbourhood space in which bonds of community could be formed. Arguing that theatres were built in particular locations not just to escape City prohibitions, but to draw on proximate audiences, I provide a brief history of Clerkenwell and place the Red Bull in its local context. By figuring the Red Bull, both in terms of its standard repertoire and its audience, as a prototypical "community theatre," I develop a sociology of dramatic production which understands this Early Modern theatre as a crucial nexus of local solidarity.
