A Reconfigurable Device for GALS Systems

Sciaraffa, Rocco January 2018 (has links)
Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are composed of standard synchronous reconfigurable logic islands that communicate with each other via an asynchronous means. Past research into fully asynchronous FPGA has demonstrated high throughput and reliability adopting dual-rail encoding. GALS FPGAs have been proposed, relying on bundled-data encoding and fixed asynchronous communication between synchronous islands. This thesis proposes a new GALS FPGA architecture with fully reconfigurable asynchronous fabric, that relies on coarse-grained Configurable Logic Blocks (CLBs) to improve the communication capability of the device. Through datapath dedicated elements, asynchronous pipelines are efficiently mapped onto the device. The architecture is presented as well as the customized tool flow needed to compile Verilog for this new coarse-grained reconfigurable circuit. The main purpose of this thesis is to map communication-purpose user-circuits on the proposed asynchronous fabric and evaluate their performance. The benchmark circuits target the design of a Networkon-Chip (NoC) router and employ two-phase bundled-data protocol. The results are obtained through simulation and compared with the performances of the same circuits on a fine-grained classical FPGA style. The proposed architecture achieves up to 3.2x higher throughput and 2.9x lower latency than the classical one. The results show that the coarse-grained style efficiently maps asynchronous communication circuits, and it may be the starting point for future reconfigurable GALS systems. Future work should focus on improving the back-end synthesis and evaluating the FPGA GALS system as a whole.

Handling Complexity via Statistical Methods

Evidence S Matangi (8082623) 05 December 2019 (has links)
<p>Phenomena investigated from complex systems are characteristically dynamic, multi-dimensional, and nonlinear. Their traits can be captured through data generating mechanisms (<i>DGM</i>) that explain the interactions among the systems’ components. Measurement is fundamental to advance science, and complexity requires deviation from linear thinking to handle. Simplifying the measurement of complex and heterogeneous data in statistical methodology can compromise their accuracy. In particular, conventional statistical methods make assumptions on the DGM that are rarely met in real world, which can make inference inaccurate. We posit that causal inference for complex systems phenomena requires at least the incorporation of subject-matter knowledge and use of dynamic metrics in statistical methods to improve on its accuracy.</p> <p>This thesis consists of two separate topics on handling data and data generating mechanisms complexities, the evaluation of bundled nutrition interventions and modeling atmospheric data.</p> <p>Firstly, when a public health problem requires multiple ways to address its contributing factors, bundling of the approaches can be cost-effective. Scaling up bundled interventions geographically requires a hierarchical structure in implementation, with central coordination and supervision of multiple sites and staff delivering a bundled intervention. The experimental design to evaluate such an intervention becomes complex to accommodate the multiple intervention components and hierarchical implementation structure. The components of a bundled intervention may impact targeted outcomes additively or synergistically. However, noncompliance and protocol deviation can impede this potential impact, and introduce data complexities. We identify several statistical considerations and recommendations for the implementation and evaluation of bundled interventions. </p> <p>The simple aggregate metrics used in clustering randomized controlled trials do not utilize all available information, and findings are prone to the ecological fallacy problem, in which inference at the aggregate level may not hold at the disaggregate level. Further, implementation heterogeneity impedes statistical power and consequently the accuracy of the inference from conventional comparison with a control arm. The intention-to-treat analysis can be inadequate for bundled interventions. We developed novel process-driven, disaggregated participation metrics to examine the mechanisms of impact of the Agriculture to Nutrition (ATONU) bundled intervention (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03152227). Logistic and beta-logistic hierarchical models were used to characterize these metrics, and generalized mixed models were employed to identify determinants of the study outcome, dietary diversity for women of reproductive age. Mediation analysis was applied to explore the underlying determinants by which the intervention affects the outcome through the process metrics. The determinants of greater participation should be the targets to improve implementation of future bundled interventions.</p> <p>Secondly, observed atmospheric records are often prohibitively short with only one record typically available for study. Classical nonlinear time series models applied to explain the nonlinear DGM exhibit some statistical properties of the phenomena being investigated, but have nothing to do with their physical properties. The data’s complex dependent structure invalidates inference from classical time series models involving strong statistical assumptions rarely met in real atmospheric and climate data. The subsampling method may yield valid statistical inference. Atmospheric records, however, are typically too short to satisfy<i> </i>asymptotic conditions for the method’s validity, which necessitates enhancements of subsampling with the use of approximating models (those sharing statistical properties with the series under study). </p> <p>Gyrostat models (<i>G-models</i>) are physically sound low-order models generated from the governing equations for atmospheric dynamics thus retaining some of their fundamental statistical and physical properties. We have demonstrated statistic that using G-models as approximating models in place of traditional time series models results in more precise subsampling confidence intervals with improved coverage probabilities. Future works will explore other types of G-models as approximating models for inference on atmospheric data. We will adopt this technique for inference on phenomena for AstroStatistics and pharmacokinetics. </p>

The present work describes an alternative methodology to evaluate the longitudinal and transversal parameters of a generic bundled conductor, based on the configuration of an equivalent conductor. The proposed methodology considers precisely the mutual coupling among subconductors of the bundle, the distributed nature of parameters and the current distribution through subconductors. The parameters are calculated and analyzed using the proposed alternative methodology and the classic procedure, based on equivalent conductor applying the concept of Geometric Mean Radius (GMR), for several bundled conductors, symmetric or nonsymmetric, conventional or non-conventional. Subsequently, the obtained results are compared to both methods and then it is possible to verify the efficacy of the proposed methodology and eventual situations where the classic methodology, based on RMG concept, presents inaccuracies due to the non-uniform distribution of the current in non-symmetric or non-conventional bundled conductors

Value of Bundled Recreation Amenities in Southern Arizona Communities: A Hedonic Pricing Approach

Hoffman, Eliza Ann 16 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of family-recreation amenities to home valuation in Southern Arizona communities. Although recreation amenities have become a frequent addition to housing developments, little research exists regarding the value these amenities contribute to home valuation. The sample consisted of 600 homes in master-planned communities and 600 homes in comparable traditional subdivisions. Using the hedonic pricing method, this study examined whether the inclusion of recreation amenities provides additional value to homes after structural and locational characteristics were controlled for. Blocked multiple regression analyses were used to determine the contribution of both individual and bundled recreation amenities to home valuation. The results of this study revealed a positive significant relationship between the bundle of community parks, neighborhood parks, and trails located within master-planned communities and home valuation, accounting for 17.45% of home value in this sample. In addition, the inclusion of family-recreation programming was found to contribute 6.82% of home value within master-planned communities. The findings suggest the inclusion of recreation amenities may be an appropriate way to revitalize communities, to increase the tax base for new housing developments, and to attract residents during a time of economic recession.

ANALÝZA MOŽNOSTÍ SIMULÁCIE A IMPLEMENTÁCIE AUTOSYNCHRÓNNYCH SUBSYSTÉMOV V OBVODOCH VLSI / SIMULATION AND IMPLEMENTATION ANALYSIS OF THE AUTOSYNCHRONOUS SUBSYSTEMS IN VLSI DEVICE

Kováč, Michal January 2010 (has links)
This thesis focuses on problem-solution analysis of synchronous digital circuits; the results of which are autosynchronous circuit design methodology, timing parameter definitions based on simulation models and constraint settings. The RTL transformation of the synchronous state machine in VHDL language to an autosynchronous state machine was created with minimal modifications for the simple design of these circuits. Following this, a comparison of the transformed state machines with their synchronous originals in parameters such as chip area, current consumption and timing specification domain is introduced. The summation of this thesis displays a theoretical comparison of several types of synchronization (synchronous, autosynchronous, fundamental asynchronous, EAIC, Bundled-data, Dual-rail) which are presented on the single state machine example with the same technology parameters.

The Effects of Bundled Ticket Forms and Consumer Regulatory Focus on Switching and Repurchase Behavior

Chiu ,Ya-Kang Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵詞: 沉入成本效果、規範導向論、動機系統、價格組合、套票、認知評估論 / This study utilized two experimental designs in testing consumer behavior in the usage and repurchase of bundled tickets (price bundling). In the first experiment, a traditional context was employed by using respondent regulatory focus as the moderator to test the impact of bundled ticket types on consumer usage intention. In the second experiment, a more realistic context was employed to examine consumers’ real usage and repurchase behavior with the bundle. Here in addition to using respondents’ regulatory focus as pure-moderator, study two also included bundling quasi-moderator—possession phases. The results of the first study showed that the difference in sunk cost effects caused by the two types of bundling would result in different bundling utilization intentions. Moreover, respondents within different motivation systems showed significantly different behavior patterns—promotion focus respondents were more likely to seek better gains, thus when competitors provided better alternatives, these respondents were more likely to make the switch. Prevention focus respondents, on the other hand, cared more about losses, making them more likely to remain with the original service provider. The result of the second study showed that compared with the later phase, bundling usage propensity was higher in the earlier holding phase. Moreover, different forms of bundled tickets had different extent influences on prevention focus respondents. Prevention focus respondents held that separate types caused them to have higher intentions in using bundling, but they would be relatively less likely to use bundling when they were in possession of an integrated one. However, the effect of different types of bundling on the usage behavior of promotion focus respondents was not significant. Among prevention focus respondents who were more sensitive to bundled ticket costs, there is no significant difference in their utilization of bundling from earlier to later phases. However, if the bundled tickets in possession were the integrated type, they were less likely to use the tickets in the later phase than in the earlier one. Regarding promotion focus respondents, the effect of bundled ticket form in the usage of said tickets in the two phases was not significant. In fact, no matter what form the bundling took, promotion focus respondents displayed significantly less use for the bundling in the later phase. Bundling possession forms had the direct impact on repurchasing behavior. In this regard, respondents holding integrated bundling types displayed a higher incidence of repurchase behavior. This was, however, only effective when it came to prevention focus respondents; no significant difference was found regarding promotion focus respondents. The results of this study yielded suggestions for both theoretical and practical areas.
