The Economic Implications of NBA Player Achievements on Athletic Apparel Companies

Maddock, Paul Andrew, II 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper aims to measure the economic impact of different NBA player achievements on the athletic apparel companies, Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. It looks at players affiliated with the brands who participated in three different events in the NBA from from 2007 to 2017: the All-Star game, the All-NBA awards, and starting lineups in the Finals. Monthly stock returns for each company were calculated for the months the events took place: January, February, May, and June. The return of each company was then regressed on total number of players each company had in the events. Four total regressions were run for the months of January, February, May, and June. Understanding the economic implications of endorsed players participating in these events can help athletic apparel companies draft more cost efficient endorsement contracts.

Hollywood redux: A comparative study of film remake performance in the foreign and domestic box office

Goetomo, Desmond 01 January 2018 (has links)
In the eyes of Hollywood producers, film remakes are popular endeavors to undertake. Part of the logic behind remakes is that they will likely perform successfully in the domestic box office because of the tried-and-tested formula that was the remake’s source material as well as the pre-existing fanbase. In addition, over the past two decades the international box office, particularly countries like China and Russia, are overtaking the United States in generating box office revenue. Hence, with the increasing popularity of producing remakes, as well as the growing significance of foreign markets for the entertainment industry, I test whether the international share of the box office is higher for remakes compared to other types of films. I control for several standard variables including type of film, genre, production budget, critical review score, recency of film, and number of installments in the film franchise. In conclusion, I find that although film remakes do not achieve significantly higher foreign box office shares, factors like sequel films, the horror genre, production budget and critical review scores play a significantly positive role in determining foreign box office share, thus indicating the preferences of foreign film audiences.

Text analytics in business environments: a managerial and methodological approach

Marcolin, Carla Bonato January 2018 (has links)
The decision-making process, in different management environments, faces a moment of change in the organizational context. In this sense, Business Analytics can be seen as an area that leverages the value of data, containing important tools for the decision-making process. However, the presence of data in different formats poses a challenge. In this context of variability, text data has attracted the attention of organizations, as thousands of people express themselves daily in this format in many applications and tools available. Although several techniques have been developed by the computer science community, there is ample scope to improve the organizational use of such text data, especially when it comes to decision-making support. However, despite the importance and availability of textual data to support decisions, its use is not common because of the analysis and interpretation challenge that the volume and the unstructured format of text data presents. Thus, the aim of this dissertation is to develop and evaluate a framework to contribute with the expansion and development of text analytics in decision-making processes, based on several natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The results presents the validity of the framework, using as a demonstration of its applicability the tourism sector through the TripAdvisor platform, as well as the internal validation of performance and the acceptance by managers.

Dias, Franciely Morais, 0000-0003-3240-5144 27 October 2017 (has links)

The literature has demonstrated the strong relationship between the analytical orientation of organizations and the generation of competitive advantage for the same organizations (KIRON et al., 2011; KIRON, FERGUSON AND PRENTICE, 2013). Therefore, this study was conducted in the supermarket sector, in order to understand how analytical orientation influences value creation - the main component of competitive advantage - (BARNEY, 1991; ITO et al., 2012; PICCOLI; IVES , 2005) for customers. It is worth clarifying that in order to achieve this objective, it was necessary to fulfill an earlier objective, that is, to investigate the existence of a ranking of the attributes of value for the supermarket customer, since a solid discussion regarding this subject was not found in the literature. In order to fulfill these purposes, this research adopted a mixed approach, being the first a quantitative phase and the second a qualitative one. In the quantitative phase, the data was collected through a closed questionnaire, applied to 480 supermarket customers, in the four major cities of the Grande Vitória region (Serra, Vitória, Vila Velha and Cariacica). The analyses in this phase were done using averages and chi-square test, on the SPSS platform. In the qualitative phase, a case study was used as the research strategy, whose data was collected through a semistructured interview. In this stage, the data was analyzed through content analysis, using the software MAXQDA12. The results of the quantitative phase indicates that there is, in fact, a ranking among the attributes of value for supermarket customers, in which price, quality, variety and proximity were the attributes considered of the highest value. The results of the qualitative phase indicate that decisions regarding price and quality - attributes of higher relevance to supermarket customers - tend to be based on more analytically oriented sources of information and processes. Decisions regarding location were considered by this study to be moderately analytical, based on poorly structured sources of information. Finally, in relation to variety, the decision is basically guided by the experience that decision-makers have in the business area. As this research identified the way in which analytical guidance influences decisions about the most relevant value attributes for supermarket customers, a number of considerations and opportunities are presented at the end of this paper to move forward with the gathering and use of data, as well the recognition, by the people, of the information generated in this process, over the information produced by just the business feeling. Such opportunities seek to explore, beyond the generation and use of data, the analytical orientation of people, who still seems to rely on experience to generate insights that would be best supported by analytical processes.

The present dissertation seeks to explain the determining factors for the effective adoption of Big Data and Business Analytics on Pernambuco’s Private Organization in terms of attitudes, skills and results. For this purpose, a theoretical-conceptual caught is gathered about the progress in data traffic in the Digital Revolution age and the willingness of organizations to take ownership of supported technologies of information and communication that transform the modus faciendi and the modus pensandi of the society. In the research corpus stand two essential theories: The Cognitive Mediation Networks Theory and the Structuration Theory (base Structurational Model of Technology). Both explored the matter of duality-use technology, in which the interaction with technological artifacts interacting with human actions starts a process of mutual influence between these elements, constituting a new form of mediation called Hyperculture. In a quantitative search method, such constructs will be related to each other and investigated 183 strategic leaders from Pernambuco, and equivalents compared to individuals with other places of birth and nationality using a specially prepared form. The results may indicate the level of readiness of the companies on this issue and if there is, or not, relation with success or failure, when considering the hyperculture levels, analytical capacity and conditions of information and communication technologies in the existing companies. At the end of the study a several possible developments, implications, and applications for the concepts introduced are presented.

Fors, Anton, Ohlson, Emelie January 2016 (has links)
Decision-making is no longer based on human preferences and expertise alone. The era of big data brings up new challenges with business analytics for organizations that want a competitive advantage. Previous research shows that a lot of studies have been made on why this era is now crucial to organizations but not how they can adapt it. In this case study there is a glimpse of how a traditional organization with an old mindset can catch up on the new technological advantages. The purpose of this study is to understand how a traditional company in Sweden is affected by analytics and if it is valuable to them. For us to be able to create our theoretical framework, we based our on peer-reviewed material but also technological and science blogs from key experts in the field. The material examines the most essential and crucial elements within the area of business analytics and data management. The theoretical framework has guided our work when formulating and refining the research question and the interview questions. The results of the study clearly show that our case is on the right track with new development and projects, but there are still a lot of milestones to achieve before these are fulfilled. Issues within the company have to be solved and there is a need to modify and change the culture in the organization to a more data-driven decisive culture. The study gives a clear insight into the challenges that organizations have to face and overcome before making radical changes.

Mapping Social Media Analytics for Small Business: A Case Study of Business Analytics

Kim, Sookhyun 01 January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop a guideline/map for small businesses to effectively utilise social media analytics and to create appropriate strategies through an examination of Key Performance Indicators with the business analytics process (Strategy-making map). Also, the researcher examines the new sequential relationships among business analytics types, the role of human analysts in business analytics, and the reciprocal relationships among the social media marketing goals. This is a case study with a local small business’s social media analytics provided by a social media network platform (i.e., Facebook Insights). The map visualises how to interpret the KPIs and how to create effective marketing strategies based on the organisational decision-making model. The results supported that if a business could create a winning strategy based on accurate business analytics with human analysts, the business could achieve multiple social media goals at once with a single marketing strategy.
