The Caring Face of Business? The Discursive Construction of the New Zealand Businesses for Social Responsibility (NZ BSR) Organisation.

Allen, Clifford January 2009 (has links)
In 2008 the use of the term Business Social Responsibility (BSR) is now seen, in New Zealand at least, as being old fashioned. The field of BSR has been overwhelmed by the terminology of sustainability. In 1998, however, BSR in NZ was a new, exciting, and controversial development. The progression from BSR to sustainability is often presented as natural and inevitable but this thesis argues that BSR and sustainability in New Zealand arose from different roots and most of the key people who became involved in the NZ BSR organisation did so for reasons that were substantially different from the driving rationale of sustainability. Further, not all of those NZ BSR pioneers consider the current focus on sustainability to be a natural outgrowth of what they were trying to achieve through BSR. This thesis applies critical discourse analysis to interview transcripts and archived documents to examine the competing discourses surrounding the formation of the NZ BSR organisation in New Zealand up until the time of its merger to form the Sustainable Business Network. The NZ BSR organisation was seen by some as primarily a reaction to the prevailing hegemony of the ideas of the neo-liberal New Zealand Business Round Table (NZBRT). The NZ BSR philosophy did not necessarily challenge the neo-liberal inspired reforms of the previous fourteen years but did offer an alternative way for businesses to react to the new environment they found themselves in.

From the aggravation of this impact and major perception of it by the society and government, there is a change adopted by companies, which focus only on the economic role of job creation and taxes payment, and begins to value its paper and relationship with society and environment. How enterprises impact in the territories in which they are installed should contributed to the development. One of the ways to contribute are the actions in Business Social Responsibility, acting in social projects and environmental. This dissertation has the objective analyze the Cooperatives Solidarity Program of Recycle of the Information Center of Environment and Recycle ? Recicloteca of the Non Governmental Organization (ONG) Ecomarapendi sponsored by the with the contribution to the territorial development and social inclusion of the community where the cooperatives Coopar and Coopcarmo are located and reflect about the role of business social responsibility in the environmental and social actions. The present theme is justified because the Baixada Fluminense is an area of expressive populational and industrial concentration and presents economic growth, however the human development observed doesn?t accompanies the growth. As methodology it was used bibliographical research and interviews with the Recicloteca, cooperatives and presidents of Coopar and Coopcarmo. The participation in the program brought economic, social and environmental benefits for the cooperatives; however there is the necessity of continuity of the actions.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TeseEAA.pdf: 5497269 bytes, checksum: 00c5f3f96ec517ff19975022d932faa6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-06-20 / The present work approaches the subject of the social responsibility of businesses, considering the implications that the institutional environment exerts on business practices. The business world has increasingly emitted signals acknowledging its social duties, and with regards to Brazil, this has mainly occurred during the last decade of twentieth century. During this period, while taking the shoe industry of Franca as an object of study, the factories social responsibility is manifested in the creation of the Pro-Child Institute as a reaction taken by the local entrepreneurs against allegations of the use of child labor in the productive chain. The transformations verified in the national institutional environment are analyzed in the space of the four classic dimensions of the business social responsibility (economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic), aiming to understand the determining institutions for the phenomenon studied from the point of view of the actors. The perception of the footwear manufacturers associated with the Pro-Child Institute is obtained by means of interviews and survey of the historical declarations registered by the media. The content analysis is made by use of a matrix of thematic categories compatible with the treatment given to the subject of business social responsibility according to the influence of the institutions. The results reveal the preponderant force of economic interests associated with the international market, and the national fragility in the application of the legal measures, in the field of external social obligations, as well as the moral complacency of the actors involved and the restricted contribution of the governing structures toward philanthropic action to transform the local values relative to the use of child labor. The legitimacy of the businesses intermix with the economic interests in the reduction in the costs of transactions and its social representation, as to the relative weight of the institutions that conform to the environment.

The possible role of business organisations in sustainable development : approaches, boundaries, future directions

O'Dochartaigh, Aideen January 2014 (has links)
It is increasingly evident that human development is proceeding in an unsustainable manner, and that large business organisations are significantly complicit in this process. In this context, the purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities by which business organisations could come to support sustainable development, with a particular focus on related barriers and how they may be overcome. Literature on business and sustainable development is dominated by managerialist, organisation-centric perspectives, where the focus is on business profitability rather than planetary sustainability. This study seeks to challenge this mainstream literature, engaging with more critical perspectives and exploring the subtleties of the contradictory arguments presented by these two literatures. Empirical investigation involved two major steps. First the thesis employs a) a content analysis and b) a “close reading” of corporate public utterances on sustainability. Secondly, and more substantively, the thesis comprises a series of semi-structured interviews with individuals in organisations. To obtain a range of perspectives on the sustainable development-business relationship, a number of “different types” of organisation are sampled, in the form of social enterprises, large PLCs, SMEs and co-owned businesses. Based on the research findings, it is argued that the most significant barriers within the business-sustainable development relationship in fact concern the nature of modern international financial capitalism, and the nature of business itself. Certain characteristics, such as growth, competition and self-interest, essential to both the nature of the “system” and the nature of business, are fundamentally incompatible with sustainable development. In recognising this dissonance, a blank canvas is created where new imaginings of “sustainable business” can begin to take place. Through detailed engagement with the critical and managerialist literatures, and drawing insight from the different types of organisations sampled, the thesis identifies a number of characteristics, such as collaboration, compromise and consideration of the common good, which may have the potential to enable an alternative, more “human”, and ultimately more “sustainable” form of business organisation.

Engaging with the Total oil corporation in Myanmar : the impact of dialogue as a tool for change towards greater conflict sensitivity

Cerletti, F. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores whether dialogue between a company and a non-profit organisation (NPO) can influence a company’s way of working towards being more conflict sensitive. As a case-study I analysed the dialogue between the French oil and gas company, Total S.A. (Total), and the US based NPO, CDA Collaborative Learning Projects (CDA) relating to the company’s operations in Myanmar/Burma. The objectives of the research were to ascertain if dialogue had a positive impact, and if so, what it was about the dialogue that enabled change, what was the process of change that could be observed and how embedded such change was. Drawing on post-modernism, systems thinking and complexity thinking, I have built on organisational change, conflict transformation, dialogue and cross-sector partnership literature to examine the role of dialogue as an enabler of change. While highlighting parallels in the discourses, I analyse the process and degree of change within the company through two conflict transformation models, one by Lederach (1997) and the other by Lederach, Neufeld and Culbertson (2007), which I feel best synthesise these parallels. The research is a longitudinal case-study (2002-2012), based on semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study adds to the limited academic research on conflict sensitivity in general, and on the implications for a company’s way of working in particular. Although I find that within the business sector, the notion of conflict sensitivity is assumed in the wider concept of corporate social responsibility, noteworthy is the relevance of dialogue in change processes. Dialogue is an essential enabler as it sparks transformational levers also recognised in the literature reviewed. However it is not sufficient. The research illustrates that the dialogue between CDA and Total has played a critical role in facilitating a shift in the company’s way of working, with the contribution of other influences at play. As such, I draw attention to the complexity of the change process and discuss the current nature of the drivers of change within Total.

The author of the essay also presents a private enterprise initiative, acting in the area of Communal Relations of the Ecovias Concessionaire, that can bring benefits to the children and also to everyone who participates of the project. The main goal is to reduce the accidents caused by stone thrown onto the Imigrantes Highway. Through drawings, collages and also their testimonies, the children who participated of the first group of the Virando o Jogo Project exposed their perceptions, meaningful memories as well as possible attitude changing after the experience they had lived on the Project. For the effectiveness of this experience, we considered the history of the Diadema district, since the company is located there; as well as the creation of the Imigrantes Highway and the creation of the company itself called Imigrantes Ecovias Concessionaire that manages the Anchieta- Imigrantes System. We also presented briefly the other accomplished initiatives of the Concessionaire that were targeted to the communities located around it. We took the Business Social Responsability concepts as our main corpus to present how these concepts has been changing/ developing through the years. We concluded the essay pointing the reverberations that the Project achieved after the collected material and the possible ways to lead to the success of those business social responsability actions were analysed in order to reduce the social inequality through alliances between the private enterprise and the government / Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo sobre as repercussões na vida de crianças atendidas pelo Projeto Virando o Jogo, iniciativa que, através do esporte, trabalha valores como respeito, disciplina e valorização da vida.
