Financial impact of voluntary turnover on small businesses a focus on management of human capital and organizational culture

Martinez, Maria Hannia Catalina 19 July 2012 (has links)
Talented employees are leaving small businesses in the search for more lucrative opportunities where their talent is acknowledged, valued and able to grow. Dealing with voluntary talent turnover decreases profitability and becomes a roadblock for achieving strategic goals. Businesses incur additional costs to find and replace talent to maintain continuity. However, the time and money spent replacing talent does not guarantee turnover will vanish. What were the stimuli that caused disengagement? Were they strategically managed? Did employees leave because the initial stimuli were not addressed? These are all questions that can lead to decisive actions focused on reducing talent departure. The goal of a small business should be to find a balance where employee values are met and human capital levers are strategically managed; consequently adding value to small businesses by reducing unnecessary costs due to turnover. / text

The "invisible" entrepreneurs : women's home-based economic activities in Tehran, Iran

Tehrani-Ami, Behnaz. January 2000 (has links)
Women's role in contemporary Iranian economy has either been ignored or portrayed as suppressed by the state's so-called "Islamic" ideologies and policies. This thesis argues that while the post-revolutionary state's Islamization attempted to create a particular gender system that excludes women from the labour market, it has proved to be unsuccessful. This imposed gender system has failed to achieve its goals due to both unstable economic conditions and through the active role women have played in opposing this set of ideologies. Concurrently, Iranian women have confirmed themselves as income-earning and economically productive individuals, contributing to the social and economic well being of their families as well as their country. The field study herein focuses on a sample of these economically active women, including both formally employed women and women who have set up (informal) businesses at home. It is argued that both groups of women contribute significant monetary income to the household and consequently to the economic and social development of their nation. In doing so they also challenge state ideologies and policies that restrict their economic and social role.

The use of domestic space for income generation in a low-income housing settlement : case study in Calcutta, India

Ghosh, Anindita, 1966- January 1994 (has links)
The urban poor of the third world cities living in slums and squatter settlements often have to support themselves or augment their meagre and uncertain incomes with small-scale business enterprises. This deceptively marginal sector of the urban economy in reality plays a vital role as a major percentage of the urban population are poor. These enterprises are, more often than not, home-based due to their lack of resources. The squalid and congested living conditions in these settlements are thus further compromised by setting up these commercial endeavour, but it is essential for their livelihood as employment opportunities occupy a primary position in their list of priorities. / This thesis studies the phenomenon of people in low-income housing settlements using their own homes for income generating activities and the compromise between the various uses of the same space. A field study was undertaken in a typical bustee in Calcutta, India to help illustrate this phenomenon. Sample surveys of a number of households where small-scale economic activity takes place were taken and studied in detail. How the integration of such activities in their daily living environment shapes, changes and influences their living patterns forms the main focus of the study.

The perception of broad–based black economic empowerment across agricultural businesses / Olivier, D.

Olivier, Dewald January 2011 (has links)
Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment could possibly be the utmost strategic issue, challenge, threat and potential opportunity facing businesses of all sizes, structures and shapes currently in South Africa. Broad–Based BEE is a government initiative to promote economic transformation in order to enable meaningful participation in the economy by black people. Broad–Based BEE is a reality and a business imperative. Broad–based BEE already have a huge impact in the way business is done in South Africa by large corporate entities, family businesses, small and medium sized businesses and professional practitioners. Broad–based BEE affects almost every participant in the South African economy. Broad–Based BEE can be divided into three components, which holds the seven elements of Broad–Based BEE, namely direct empowerment, human resource development and indirect empowerment. These elements include Equity Ownership, Management, Employment Equity, Skills Development, Preferential Procurement, Enterprise Development and Corporate Social Investment. The agricultural businesses in South Africa have implemented unique types of Broad–Based BEE strategies to conform to Broad–Based BEE. These strategies include shareholding by external Broad–Based BEE companies, and registering Broad–Based BEE employee trusts that obtains shareholding in the company. According to the AgriBEE Framework its vision is to pursue Broad–Based BEE in support of a United and Prosperous Agricultural Sector. The objectives of AgriBEE as described by the AgriBEE Steering Committee are to facilitate broad–based black economic empowerment in the agricultural sector by implementing initiatives to include Black South Africans at all levels of agricultural activity and enterprises along the entire agricultural value chain by following certain steps and ideologies. The contribution of the agribusinesses has some clear indications of shortcomings within the industry as well as and indication of possible elements to be pursued in future. There are however also serious implications to the respondents actions and attitude towards Broad–Based BEE now and in future. It also very apparent that the agribusiness does not distance themselves from the Broad–Based BEE Act and its requirements as well as the consequences thereof. The agribusiness industry is actively involved in Broad–Based BEE. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.
