January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: The maintenance of wild animals in domiciliary captivity as pets has been common in Brazil and parrots are preferred because they are considered curious, intelligents, amusing, excellent talkative and mimics. However, the blue- fronted amazon parrot (Amazona aestiva) can be source of some zoonosis infections. In the present study the sanitary and nutritional management of 50 blue-fronted amazon parrots kept in domiciliary captivity in Araçatuba city, SP, as well as the occurrence of zoonosis agents in stools samples, social-economic conditions and residents-birds contact were evaluated. Results showed inadequate sanitary and nutritional management in the majority of the cases, strait contact with the parrots and lack of knowledge about parrots diseases. Salmonella was not found in stool samples while Escherichia coli was present in three samples and levedures-like structures were found in the majority them. Cryptosporidium was found in one sample. We can conclude that the close contact with the birds and the uncorrect management can favour occurrence of zoonosis in evaluated residences. The presence of Cryptosporidium sp. Indicates transmition possibility of cryptosporidiosis, in case of zoonotic specie, from parrots to humans in domiciliary captivity conditions. / Mestre

Ovarian function and reproductive behaviors across the female orangutan life cycle

Durgavich, Lara 24 February 2016 (has links)
Due to their phylogenetic position as an outgroup to humans and the other African apes, empirical data from orangutans are an especially valuable comparative tool with which questions about the evolution of human life history and reproductive characteristics can be addressed. Yet few such data are available. In this dissertation, I use endocrinological and behavioral data from 7 female and 3 male orangutans housed at the Woodland Park Zoo in Washington and the Great Ape Trust in Iowa to characterize the ovarian function and reproductive behaviors of captive female orangutans at different points in the life cycle. Ovarian hormone measurements were achieved through the use of non-invasive urine sampling, and assays reveal both intra- and inter-individual variation in hormone production. Results indicate that (1) adolescent females in captivity do not experience a marked period of subfecund estrogen and progesterone levels in association with reproductive maturation, (2) individual females exhibit both "high quality" and "low quality" cycles, including instances of anovulation, in the absence of fluctuating dietary and environmental conditions, (3) mating behaviors vary between individuals and with cycle phase, but are not strongly influenced by absolute ovarian hormone concentrations, and (4) reproductive senescence does not significantly impact the ovarian function and mating behaviors of aging female orangutans. These results demonstrate that many aspects of human reproductive biology and behavior, such as an extended period of mating receptivity, are evolutionarily conserved. They suggest, however, that the decline in human ovarian function in mid-life may be derived and of possible adaptive significance. The potential significance of differences between captive and wild ape populations, and the character, history, and familial relationships of the particular individuals discussed are considered in the interpretation of all data.

'They will attach themselves to the house of Jacob' : a redactional study of the oracles concerning the nations in the Book of Isaiah 13-23

Lee, Jongkyung January 2015 (has links)
The present study argues that a series of programmatic additions were made to the oracles concerning the nations in Isa 13-23 during the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who were responsible for Isa 40-55. These additions were made to create continuity between the ancient oracles against the nations from the Isaiah tradition and the future fate of the same nations as the late-exilic redactor(s) foresaw. The additions portray a two-sided vision concerning the nations. One group of passages (14:1-2; 14:32b; 16:1-4a; 18:7) depicts a positive turn for certain nations while the other group of passages (14:26-27; 19:16-17; 23:8-9, 11) continues to pronounce doom against the remaining nations. This double-sided vision is set out first in Isa 14 surrounding the famous taunt against the fallen tyrant. 14:1-2, before the taunt, paints the broad picture of the future return of the exiles and the attachment of the gentiles to the people of Israel. After the taunt and other sayings of YHWH against his enemies, 14:26-27 extends the sphere of the underlying theme of 14:4b-25a, namely YHWH's judgement against boastful and tyrannical power(s), to all nations and the whole earth. The two sides of this vision are then applied accordingly to the rest of the oracles concerning nations in chs 13-23. To the nations that have experienced similar disasters as the people of Israel, words of hope in line with 14:1-2 were given. To the nations that still possessed some prominence and reasons to be proud, words of doom in line with 14:26-27 were decreed. Only later in the post-exilic period, for whatever reason, be it changed international political climate or further spread of the Jewish diaspora, was the inclusive vision of 14:1-2 extended even to the nations that were not so favourably viewed by our late-exilic redactor (19:18-25; 23:15-18).

The shaping of 'West Barbary' : the re/construction of identity and West Country Barbary captivity

Esra, Jo Ann January 2013 (has links)
Divided into three parts, this thesis maps a cultural history of Barbary captivity; concentrating on the early 17th century leading up to the Civil Wars; an aspect of British-Muslim contact within which the West Country is overrepresented in the archives. However, this wealth of material contrasts sharply with the paucity of popular and public-facing representations. Situating these accounts within wider contexts, this thesis investigates this contrast, exploring the social, cultural, emotional and economic impact of Barbary captivity upon understandings of place and identity. The first part examines representations of being taken captive, the terror and distress of West Country inhabitants, and the responses and concerns of the authorities. The on-going failure to protect the region and its seafarers exacerbated this distress, producing marginalised geographies of fear and anxiety. The second part explores the themes of memory and identity, arguing that how captives were remembered and forgotten had implications for localised and national identities. For those held in Barbary, families and communities petitioned and undertook ransom collections to redeem the captives, providing reminders to the authorities and appealing for wider remembrance as part of the processes of Christian compassion. Nevertheless, the majority of captives were ‘forgotten’, neither ransomed nor leaving their individual mark within the historical record. This part concludes with a discussion of the role of memory in managing and articulating the ‘trauma’ of captivity. The final part examines mobile and fluid identities, concentrating on returning captives and Islamic converts. Early modern theories of identity situated the humoral body of the captive as susceptible to ‘turning Turk’, contributing to wider negotiations of national, ethnic and religious identities. Cultural anxieties were preoccupied with the ill-defined borders of the geographically displaced material body, generating mutable, hidden and shameful identities. In conclusion, sites of cultural trauma are produced, indicated by the subsequent silence regarding this aspect of localised history.

Nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, is one of the most exhibited sharks in Aquariums in the world, however, the reproductive failure rate of this species continues high. Since there probably is an olfactory mediation for its reproduction and environmental enrichments have a potential positive effect on the reproduction of captive animals, the present study aimed to evaluate whether the use of olfactory enrichment would generate effects in the exhibition of reproductive behaviors of nurse sharks, as well as if this effect would be differential according to sex. This study also proposed to evaluate physical proximity as an indicative of proceptive female behavior. The study was divided in three phases (control – without enrichment, shortterm enrichment – recently applied, long-term enrichment – after being incorporated into the management routine) and was performed in two institutions with distinct husbandry. The enrichment used was commercial basil (Ocimum basilicum), which was initially prepared as an ice block and, for the long-term phase, presented as an extract. The behavioral observations were performed through focal sampling with instantaneous recording, totaling 120 hours of observation per animal, divided into two moments (active and inactive). Results show greater activity related to nocturnal period and feeding sessions; greater frequency of occurrence of reproductive behaviors in the inactive period, with males and during the long-term enriched phase. The proximity analysis was efficient as indicative of socio-sexual behavior, as well as the “body movement” behavior. It is important to note that the enrichment effects are differentiated for the sexes and therefore, close monitoring and scheduling are essential to avoid over-stimulation or habituation to the enrichment. Nevertheless, the fact that the greater frequency of reproductive behavior occurred during the inactive period facilitates this monitoring, since it refers to the operating hours of zoological institutions (daytime). Finally, with the definition of proceptive behavior, it is possible to determine which females are receptive and thus, to delineate more efficient breeding programs. These results highlight the importance of having a management that constantly stimulates the senses of elasmobranchs, especially in institutions that aims to carry out breeding programs.

The group was constituted by 21 individuals from different origin, with different ages and from both sexes, maintained at an enclosure in the Center of Reintroduction of Wild Animals. The influence of the position in the enclosure and of the period of the day on the pattern of activity of the group were also investigated. The observations happened between July and September of 2008. The scan method was used to quantify the categories locomotion, exploration, maintenance, rest, vocalization in movement, vocalization in rest, agonístics and affiliatives social interactions. Space use was also registered during scans. Among the intervals of the scans social behaviors were registered using the sampling of all of the occurrences. "Rest" was the category more frequently observed and the social interactions were the least frequently observed. However, social affiliative interactions occurred significantly more than agonístic interactions. The animals showed preference for the superior part of the enclosure but activity occurred more frequently in the inferior than in the superior part and in the front than in the bottom part of the enclosure. There was no effect of the period of the day on the activity of the animals. Our results indicate that: 1) the social behavior of the animals may be affected by the captivity presenting a decrease in the frequency of the occurrence of interactions; 2) the social interactions in this species are primarily affiliatives with little occurrence of aggressive interactions; 3) the activity of the animals depends on characteristics of the environment, in more exposed environments the animals tend to be more active; 4) the individuals of this species present a tropism for higher areas and they avoid to rest in the ground.

Estudo de micobactérias em animais silvestres mantidos em cativeiro / Study of mycobacteria in wildlife maintained in captivity

Cássia Yumi Ikuta 13 July 2015 (has links)
Outbreaks of tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis in zoos, aquariums, research and breeding facilities have shown the importance of these organisms to health of wildlife animal maintained in captivity. Two hundred and eleven samples, from 101 animals among mammal, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, were cultured. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, M. bovis and 13 species of non-tuberculous mycobacteria associated to diseases were isolated. The chronical nature of tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis, their limited ante mortem diagnosis, along with social behavior of each species and confinement, favor mycobacterial transmission through contact with infected humans and other animals. Despite the presence of M. tuberculosis and M. bovis has already been observed in Brazilian institutions, the present study described infections in animal species destined to human consumption, and species known for their susceptiblility, yet not documented in Brazil. Disease caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria was reported, though its importance must be considered according to the animal species affected

Avaliação clínica, sorológica e parasitológica de serpentes naturalmente infectadas com Cryptosporidium serpentis / Clinical, serological and parasitological evaluation of snakes naturally infected with Cryptosporidium serpentis

Philipp Ricardo Scaciotte de Oliveira Paiva 28 September 2012 (has links)
Infection by Cryptosporidium serpentis is one of the most important diseases in reptiles, and is characterized by chronic infection, clinical or subclinical, and the presence of severe hypertrophic gastritis, food regurgitation, progressive weight loss, mortality, and intermittent and continuous shedding of oocysts in feces. The objective of this study was to standardize an indirect enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against C. serpentis, and evaluate the clinical, parasitological and humoral immune response in snakes naturally infected with C. serpentis. Twenty one snakes naturally infected with C. serpentis and housed at the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil, were used for accomplish clinical and parasitological analyzes of C. serpentis infection, through the daily record of clinical signs and monthly survey of fecal shedding of oocysts using Kinyoun staining technique. The serological evaluation was performed monthly using the indirect ELISA for the detection of anti-C. serpentis antibodies, for a period of 12 months in eight animals, eight months in three animals, and six months in one animal. The indirect ELISA was standardized on the basis of block titration using antigen produced from oocysts of C. serpentis, chicken IgY anti-snake gamaglobulins and a conjugate containing rabbit IgG anti-chicken IgY linked to peroxidase. Clinical symptoms consisted in food regurgitation, inappetence, and progressive weight loss. The parasitological analysis revealed intermittent fecal shedding of variable number of oocysts in all snakes, with positivity in 92% (116/126) of the samples. The indirect ELISA was positive in 42.9% (54/126) of the samples. Humoral immune response was observed in most animals, however, fluctuating antibodies levels with rotation of positive and negative results were observed in some snakes.

Biologia reprodutiva de fêmeas de Astyanax fasciatus com números de cromossomos diferentes vivendo em ambiente natural e no cativeiro / Reproductive biology of Astyanax fasciatus females with different chromosome numbers living in natural environment and in captivity

Gabriela Brambila de Souza 02 February 2015 (has links)
To mitigate the environmental impact on the biota, fish restocking programs aim to reproduce fish species affected by dams. In the Ponte Nova Fish Farm, in the Upper Tietê River Basin, the migratory fish Astyanax fasciatus is routinely produced for restocking with a conventional artificial breeding protocol, but its success varies among the females. A cytogenetic study detected that the number of chromosomes was different among the broodstocks, a common feature in A. fasciatus. The purpose of this study was to study the reproductive physiology of Astyanax fasciatus with different numbers of chromosomes in a natural environment (AN) and captivity (Cat) and the possible changes that might explain different results in the success of induced reproduction in captivity. Adult females of each experimental group (G1-46 chromosomes; with low response to induced reproduction, and G2 - 48 chromosomes, with good response to induced reproduction) were collected in Cat and AN over one year. Blood samples were taken to analyze plasma estradiol (E2), and samples of ovaries to calculate the relative fecundity (FR), oocyte diameter, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological analyzes to identify the maturation stage. Females of G1, in both environments, started the vitellogenic phase of the reproductive cycle in the winter, with an increase in E2 levels. In the wild animals, the highest percentage of vitellogenic oocytes was maintained in the ovaries from spring to summer, a period in which E2 levels remained high. On the other hand, in captivity, a higher level of E2 was observed only in winter. Even so, the females in captivity maintained the fecundity significantly higher when compared with the wild ones, and also a higher percentage of vitellogenic oocytes, evidencing the absence of spawning and a delay in the yolk absorption. In G2, the vitellogenic stage of oocytes in wild females started in the fall, with a progressive increase in E2 levels, reaching its peak in spring, with the spawning in summer. On the other hand, remaining in the captivity, somehow altered the availability to the environmental tips of the seasonal cycle, and E2 levels as well as the FR virtually remained high throughout the year. These data suggest that A. fasciatus with different numbers of chromosomes have different reproductive patterns, both in a Cat and AN. G1 females could succeed in induced reproduction when handled immediately after winter, while G2 females seem to succeed the artificial reproductive induction throughout the year

Both species have been hunted commercially since the sixteenth century, resulting in a drastic reduction or elimination of manatees in some places. This hunting pressure may have caused isolation of the populations resulting in geographic genetic isolation, with a reduction of their genetic diversity. The objective of this study is to understand the genetic diversity and population structure of the West Indian manatee (T. manatus) in Brazil; verify the existence of hybridization between the manatees T. manatus and T. inungus; define the degree of relatedness of individuals in captivity; and provide strategies for the conservation of the species. In northeastern Brazil, a large number of dependent calves strand on beaches. Many of these calves have been rescued alive and rehabilitated for future release. Previously, the identification of release sites did not take into account the genetic issues. Through this study, it has been possible to identify suitable release sites based on phylogenetic traits of the manatees. The genetic structure of the population was studied using nuclear DNA in the program STRUCTURE, and comparing FST and RST values. On the Northeast coast one population was identified, which is subdivided in two subpopulations. A different genetic population was found in the Northwest of the Amazon River estuary (extreme north of Brazil, Guyana and Venezuelan). Manatees from the Estuary of the Amazon River grouped with Amazonian manatees from the Santarém region to form a third population. A total of four manatee Management Units were identified along the Brazilian coast, which should be treated separately for management and conservation needs. Using a combination of molecular markers (mtDNA and nDNA) and cytogenetic analyses the existence of hybridization between T. manatus and T inunguis was confirmed, although this does not appear to be a frequent occurrence. Some of the dependent calves rescued, and other individuals transferred from irregular captive conditions to the CMA/ICMBio, were kept together and breeding occurred. Maintaining related manatees together can lead to inbreeding. It was possible 29 to establish the degree of relatedness between individuals kept at CMA/ICMBio and verify the extistence of inbreeding. To avoid inbreeding, hybridization, and overpopulation in captivity, it is necessary that males and females be separated immediately, thereby preventing reproduction ex-situ. The present study allows us to establish actions for the conservation of the West Indian manatee. Actions that should be prioritized include: protection and restoration of habitat with the creation and implementation of specific protected areas; creation and maintenance of travel corridors that allow gene flow; reduction and elimination of anthropogenic pressures on the species; stopping pointless reproduction in captivity; designing further studies in the north of Brazil to better understand the hybridization and implement the action plan.
