Socioeconomic Status and Social Class as Predictors of Career Adaptability and Educational Aspirations in High School StudentsEshelman, Alec 01 August 2013 (has links)
This study examined socioeconomic status (SES) and perceived social class as predictors of career adaptability and educational aspirations in a sample of American high school students. SES was measured using caregivers' occupation and education, and the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status--Youth Version (Goodman et al., 2001) assessed subjective social class. Career adaptability was be measured using the Career Futures Inventory-Revised (CFI-R; Rottinghaus, Buelow, Matyja, & Schneider, 2012) and the Career Maturity Inventory (CMI) Form C (Savickas & Porfeli, 2011). Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regressions. SES and perceived social class independently predicted educational aspirations and expectations, while SES independently predicted occupational aspirations and expectations. Expected correlations between CFI-R and CMI Form C scales were found, providing convergent validity evidence and supporting the use of the CFI-R with adolescents. This study represents a step toward developing empirically informed vocational interventions that take SES and social class into account.

Duas dimensões afetam fortemente a vida das pessoas, o trabalho e a família. A dual career, favorece a relação trabalho-família, pois o envolvimento dos cônjuges no atendimento das demandas das duas esferas possibilita o avanço da carreira ao mesmo tempo em que se ajustam na vida familiar. Estar seguro nessa relação endossa a prontidão para lidar com as mudanças de carreiras. A adaptabilidade de carreira envolve a capacidade de um indivíduo de usar vários recursos para lidar com mudanças na carreira. Dessa forma, a fim de conhecer os recursos que as pessoas casadas utilizam para se ajustar ao mundo dinâmico atual, este trabalho propôs-se a compreender como se dão as configurações familiares de pessoas casadas na relação dual career, sob o enfoque da adaptabilidade de carreira? Com base no objetivo proposto, foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva e quantitativa, com 634 participantes, dos quais 331 pessoas eram casadas e com filhos e 303 pessoas eram casadas e sem filhos. Os resultados foram obtidos pela análise descritiva de dados, utilizando-se a Análise Fatorial Exploratória e análise de conglomerados (cluster). Os resultados a partir dos grupos com filhos e sem filhos revelaram os seguintes agrupamentos: casados com filhos; resolvidos, balanceados, desamparados e desapaixonados. Para o grupo de pessoas casadas e sem filhos outros quatro agrupamentos se destacam, sendo: os indiferentes, desapegados, influenciados e apegados. Os resultados obtidos permitiram caracterizar o perfil de pessoas casadas com filhos e sem filhos, verificando quais deles demonstraram domínios de adaptabilidade de carreira quando relacionadas a perspectiva da dual career. Para aqueles que sentem o apoio (do cônjuge ou organizacional), a adaptabilidade de carreira é percebida, demonstrando que a cooperação e o suporte social estimulam o acesso aos recursos de enfrentamento interno e reforçam as respostas apropriadas as decisões de carreira. / Two dimensions strongly affect the lives of people, work and family. The dual career favors the work-family relationship, since the involvement of the spouses in meeting the demands of the two spheres makes it possible to advance the career while adjusting for family life. Being secure in this relationship endorses readiness to cope with career changes. Career adaptability refers to the ability of an individual to use various resources to deal with career changes. Thus, in order to know the resources which married people use to adjust to the current dynamic world, this study aims to verify how the family configurations of married people work in the dual career relationship, under the approach of career adaptability. Based on the objective, a descriptive and quantitative survey was conducted with 634 participants, of whom 331 were married with children and 303 people were married without children. The results were obtained through descriptive data analysis, using exploratory factorial analysis and cluster analysis. The results from the groups with children and without children revealed the following groupings: married with children; resolved, balanced, helpless and dispassionate. For the group of married without children, four other groups stand out: the indifferent, detached, influenced and attached. The results obtained allowed to characterize the profile of married people with children and without children, verifying which of them demonstrated domains of career adaptability when related to the perspective of the dual career. For those who feel the support (of the spouse or organizational), career adaptability is perceived, demonstrating that cooperation and social support stimulate access to internal coping resources and reinforce appropriate responses to career decisions.

The Psychological Armor of Urban Adolescents: Exploring the Influence of Critical Consciousness and Racial Identity on Career AdaptabilityPhan, Olivia Minh January 2010 (has links)

Blustein / Deficit-oriented research has ignored the strengths of urban adolescents of color, perpetuating interpretations that they are deviant and pathological (Spencer et al., 2006). Generally unacknowledged by problem-focused perspectives is how youths of color grapple with vulnerability to negative socialization messages, prejudice and discrimination, thus they possess competencies that warrant attention (Blustein et al., 2010; Franklin, 2004; Nicolas et al., 2008; Spencer et al., 2006). The purpose of this study is to examine psychosocial influences that promote career adaptability in a sample of 84 urban adolescents of color. Exploratory questions about the contributions of critical consciousness and racial identity to career outcome expectations and subjective well-being were investigated. The results of the regression analyses offer support for considering selected racial identity schemas (Helms, 1995b) as integral parts of counseling interventions to promote career adaptability. Internalization was significantly associated with both outcome variables. Additionally, decreased levels of Dissonance and Immersion-Resistance were found to be related to higher levels of satisfaction with school and work. Implications for programming and policy include recognizing and strengthening abilities of high school students of color to value their racial identity in the vocational process. These findings enhance the understanding of urban adolescents' psychological armor against social injustice and add to the career development literature by counteracting the negative portrayal of this group. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WORKING THEORY: PREDICTING DECENT WORK EXPERIENCESBettonville, Brian Peter 01 December 2018 (has links)
The Psychology of Working Theory (PWT; Duffy, Blustein, Diemer, & Autin, 2016) was recently proposed as an empirically testable approach to understanding the work processes of those for whom work decisions are influenced by contextual factors and who engage in work for reasons other than satisfaction. In the present study of 285 adults, I investigated the relationships between marginalization, economic resources, work volition, career adaptability, and decent work. I found that work volition, career adaptability, and economic resources all uniquely predicted decent work. I also found that greater economic resources and lower marginalization predicted greater work volition. Economic resources and marginalization have a significant negative correlation, and work volition significantly predicted career adaptability. I failed to support the hypotheses that greater marginalization would predict lower decent work experiences when accounting for other variables and that greater economic resources and lower marginalization would predict greater career adaptability. I identified two alternative models for the data. A model with only work volition and career adaptability predicting decent work provided an adequate fit. A model with only work volition predicting career adaptability provided mixed results. This study provides empirical support for the initial propositions of the PWT, provides further evidence for the importance of contextual variables in work experiences, and identifies several key factors that lead individuals to attain a decent work experience.

Este estudo objetivou investigar qualitativamente a adaptabilidade de carreira de trabalhadores-estudantes, descrevendo como percebem seus recursos de adaptabilidade e os expressam no dia-a-dia. Entendeu-se que este público vivencia uma situação de transição de carreira ao desempenhar simultaneamente os papeis de trabalhador e de estudante, o que exige mais de sua capacidade de adaptação e consequentemente gera maior ativação de sua adaptabilidade de carreira. Participaram deste nove trabalhadores estudantes de nível superior de graduação de universidades particulares da cidade de Porto Alegre. A coleta de dados foi feita utilizando uma entrevista semiestruturada aplicando a estratégia teaching the test proposta por Savickas e Porfeli (2011), que consiste em aplicar uma escala e discutir as respostas com o participante. Foi utilizada a versão brasileira da Escala de Adaptabilidade de Carreira como objetivo de abordar aspectos relacionados aos construtos investigados, sendo o material verbal produzido analisado através de análise temática. Os resultados são apresentados em duas seções: percepções sobre o manejo dos papeis de trabalhador e estudante e percepções sobre a adaptabilidade de carreira. Cada tema ou subtema foram ilustrados com excertos representativos. In this study the researcher explores the career adaptability needs of a young woman in Swaziland. The study is driven by the work of Hackett and Betz (1981) and the Career Counselling Approach of Savickas (1993, 1997,&2009). Hackett and Betz (1981) postulate that women’s career development is hindered largely as a result of socialization experiences. A number of academics and practitioners assert that career adaptability is a key competency for career success (Hartung; Hirschi, 2009; O’Connell, McNeely&Hall 2008), hence the focus in this study on career adaptability through a qualitative research approach employing a case study design. In a bid to yield an up to date and inclusive personality and career profile of the participant, the following data collection techniques were utilised: Career Adaptability Questionnaire, career-story interview, semi-structured follow-up interviews, Rothwell-Miller Interest Blank, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Career Interest Profile, Values Scales, observations and a researcher journal. The results were then be analysed and interpreted quantitatively and QUALITATIVELY. Swaziland has established her own rules based on widely accepted and held values, beliefs and meanings (Daly, 2001). These views, beliefs and meanings have a strong influence on women’s place in society and in the workplace. In fact, a number of interrelated factors influence the way in which Swazi women are treated in Swaziland. Given this long-standing heritage, Swazi society has become accustomed to male control and decision making over family, traditional and societal issues (Daly, 2001). The effect of life-design counselling on the career adaptability of learners in an independent school settingSymington, Claire January 2015 (has links)
The future work force will be expected to transition from the familiarity of their school environment into an unfamiliar and unstable career world. Organisational changes have shifted the terms of employment from an employee practicing a life-long vocation to now becoming part of a contingent work force. This infers that employees may have to forfeit their reliance on the company to shape their identity development in lieu of self-management. The acknowledgement of these changes has created a ripple effect in the career counselling field as career practitioners increasingly begin to experience the limitations of traditional career approaches in addressing their clients’ evolving career needs. Subsequently, a post-modern framework to career counselling has been introduced to guide career counselling practices in the 21st century. My study focused on the use of two such approaches, namely life-design counselling and career adaptability.
This study was based on a socio-constructivist paradigm, which had developed from an interpretivist worldview. The nature of my research study lent itself well to a collective case study, which involved the participation of five learners from an independent school context in a major South African city. Qualitative data collection, analysis and interpretation techniques were used to explore the effect of life-design counselling on the career adaptability of the afore-mentioned participants. Prior to attending eight group-based life-design counselling sessions, the participants were asked to attend an individual pre-interview. They were also asked to participate in a post-interview upon completion of the last-mentioned sessions.
The identified themes generated from the qualitative data collected were as follows: responses related to career adaptability and the related sub-skills based on the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) (Savickas & Porfeli, 2012:357); family/significant others’ influences; financial and economic considerations; components related to emotional intelligence (Bar-On, 2007); adolescent development; school life; childhood dreams, and reflection on the process of life-design counselling. Findings suggest that the participants from my study appeared to benefit from the implementation of a life-design counselling intervention aimed at improving their career adaptability. With this study I aimed to contribute to the field of career counselling by highlighting the specific factors that were likely to influence the career trajectory of the five participants and to demonstrate the positive effect of life-design counselling on their career adaptability.
