Reading Through Displacement: Functionality of the Underlying Theme in Tim O'Brien's Fiction

McClure, Benjamin Taylor 17 May 2011 (has links)
Tim O'Brien, a contemporary author writing mostly about his combat experience in Vietnam, has written eight books to date. All involve Vietnam in some way—overtly, for the most part. He and his stories are well known stylistically for several traits including the blurred distinctions between what actually happened and "story truth," something that did not really happen, but is true nonetheless. Within the story, he also blurs the line between what actually happens and what is imagined by the narrator or one of the characters; and, although he sometimes makes the distinction, he often does not. To help shed some light on this, there are a number of published interviews and articles wherein he discusses the themes, forms, and methods of his writing as well as his experiences. Research and analysis of O'Brien and his works show that, although his stories overtly deal with a myriad of other issues and themes, the complex and specific theme of displacement caused by trauma is present in all of his work, and can even be considered the engine that drives his stories and how they work with the reader. Additionally, O'Brien's well-known method of writing is actually a subtle yet intensely effective performance and enactment of this underlying theme of displacement. When used as a reading strategy, the theme itself clarifies and unlocks several points of contention about his texts such as O'Brien's generally negative treatment of women. / Master of Arts

Knowledge evolution within business processes undergoing planned/radical change : empirical evidence from Kuwaiti higher education institutes

Alyaseen, Nouf M. B. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates changes in knowledge required to complete tasks within business processes that have implemented planned/radical change. The research is based on the synthesis of three scholarly domains: change management, knowledge management, and business processes. Organisations implement planned/radical change for various reasons: due to perturbations in the external environment, to achieve strategic goals, or to improve profitability. Radical changes affect business processes and the people carrying out tasks within those processes. Yet, many radical process change initiatives founder. The conceptual argument underpinning this thesis is that planned/radical change initiatives are rarely fully implemented because knowledge does not fully evolve from pre-change to post-change knowledge. People can hold onto knowledge they have, or are unable to grasp new knowledge required, or attempt to apply knowledge that is redundant. This thesis posits that knowledge which does not evolve is a barrier to change. Consequently, this study contributes by providing a deeper understanding of knowledge evolution in the context of processes that have undergone planned/radical change, and specifically the evolution of declarative, procedural and heuristic knowledge necessary to complete new or redesigned tasks within business processes, which form the bedrock to enhancing the implementation of planned/radical change. Drawing on the literature related to change, knowledge, process and dynamic capabilities, a conceptual model is developed to explain evolutionary stages from pre-change to post-change declarative, procedural and heuristic knowledge within business processes. The model is based upon empirical data, collected qualitatively from two higher educational institutes based in Kuwait. This thesis also investigates redundant knowledge: knowledge that is no longer of use in post-change processes. In addition, the factors affecting knowledge evolution that exist during the period of implementing planned/radical change in a business process are identified and defined. Understanding these factors enhances the progression of staff members through the evolution stages. The model suggests that greater recognition of the pace at which knowledge evolves is important for implementing planned/radical change. The implications for practice are highlighted. This study has a number of limitations and suggestions for future research, which are set out in more detail in the concluding chapter.

Medical Treatment and Grading of Bell's Palsy

Berg, Thomas January 2009 (has links)
The main aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of prednisolone and valaciclovir in a large number of Bell's palsy patients. The incidence and intensity of pain around the ear, in the face or in the neck during the first two months of palsy, and its prognostic value, was also assessed. We also investigated how study design and choice of analysis method affect the rate of facial recovery. Furthermore, the agreement between the Sunnybrook, House-Brackmann and Yanagihara facial grading systems was evaluated. From May 2001 to September 2007, a prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial with 12-month follow-up was performed in patients with Bell's palsy. Of 839 randomised patients, 829 were included in the intention-to-treat analysis; 206 received placebo plus placebo, 210 prednisolone plus placebo, 207 valaciclovir plus placebo, and 206 prednisolone plus valaciclovir. Time to recovery was significantly shorter in the 416 patients who received prednisolone compared with the 413 who did not (p<0.0001). At 12 months, 300 of 416 patients (72%) in the prednisolone group had recovered compared with 237 of 413 patients (57%) in the no prednisolone group (p<0.0001). Valaciclovir was not found to affect time to facial recovery or outcome at 12 months. Prednisolone and/or valaciclovir did not affect the incidence or intensity of pain. Presence of pain at day 11 to 17 indicated a worse prognosis for facial recovery at 12 months. We also found that recovery rates in a Bell's palsy trial are substantially affected by the choice of analysis method and definition of facial recovery. We used weighted Kappa statistics in 100 examinations of patients with facial palsy to assess the agreement between the Sunnybrook, House-Brackmann and Yanagihara scales. The highest agreement was found between the regional Sunnybrook and Yanagihara scales. An evaluative difference between the Sunnybrook and House-Brackmann systems was observed.

Zdroje cen pro porovnávací způsob ocenění u rodinných domů v severní části okresu Brno-venkov / Price Sources for the Comparative Valuation Method for Houses in the Northern Part of the Brno-venkov District

Durišová, Nina January 2020 (has links)
The objective of this work, price sources for the comparative valuation method for houses in the northern part of Brno-venkov district, is to create eight databases of houses based on advertised and carried prices. Using the input database the another database for pricing is created, then databases with advertised and carried prices are compared and to obtain results. The valuation of houses is done using sales comparison approach. Based on the results, we can conclude that price is not the only information that may affect the valuation, by mainly the lack of information about specific real estate might affect the results. We propose recommendations for valuation and verification of the information about compared and valuated real estates.

Vliv izokinetické síly a posturálních svalů na dynamické síly, rychlost a úhlovou rychlost přímého kopu bez zátěže a s nesenou zátěží / Effects of isokinetic strength and postural muscles on dynamic strength, velocity and angular velocity of a front kick with and no carried load.

Krajcigr, Jan January 2022 (has links)
Title: Effects of isokinetic strength and postural muscles on dynamic strength, velocity and angular velocity of a front kick with and no carried load. Objectives: The aim of the work was to find the effect of the isokinetic strength of hip and knee flexors and extensors of the lower limb performing a front kick, hip rotators during concentric and eccentric contraction of the standing lower limb and the postural muscles on dynamic forces, velocity and angular velocity of a front kick with and no carried load. Methods: This correlation study was conducted on 16 male participants (age: 22 ± 1,5 years⁏ weight: 79 ± 6,6 kg⁏ height: 182 ± 6,1 cm) studying military physical education at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports of Charles University in Prague. Participants performed 5 consecutive front kicks with or without additional load (0 kg, 5 kg, 15 kg, 30 kg, 45 kg). The dynamic strength of the kicks was measured using a Kistler force plate. The velocity and angular velocity of the kicks were measured using a motion capture system (Qualisys). The isokinetic strength of hip and knee flexors and extensors and hip internal and external rotators were measured using a Humac Norm isokinetic dynamometer (CSMI). Postural muscles strength was assessed using 5 different stability tests. The correlation...

The objects used in this take over on a contract basis are clippings of lapsings contained in national laws in such a way as international that they regulate this subject, as well as writings in audio and video of lessons given for two teachers of different areas (arts and sciences) that they work with the same group of nineteen pupils, being that it has between them a pupil with syndrome of Down, beyond being used three interviews with the teachers and others two on people the pedagogical area of the school. The analysis if return for the frequency with that the agents use the daily lapsings in its practical being that to direct the work for this end, I adopted slight knowledge of prescribed work and carried through work (Schwartz, 1998; 2000; 2002; Nourodine 2002) as well as I used estimated of Amigues (2003; 2004) to investigate the real activity of the teaching work. Some devices if had shown excellent for concretion of this study such as: interdiscurso, the cenografia and the ethos which are inserted concepts in the field of the language (Maingueneau, 1998 2005; 2007) this last one, related ace interviews, allow to analyze what the citizen says and the way as it says. The research made possible to verify that the practical one of the adopted actions, most of the time an involuntary act that generally occurs with the question of the inclusion, nor always condiz with the lapsing due to one strong presence of instituted knowing that it is internalizado from the teaching experience / Esse trabalho propõe um estudo de como estão sendo interpretados os prescritos de inclusão e como estão sendo gerenciados na atividade de trabalhos de profissionais que atuam com alunos com necessidade educacionais especiais - NEE.
