Inclusion Evaluation for Calcium Treated Steel and Its Relation to Caster Behavior in Industry / Inclusion Evaluation for Calcium Treated Steel in Industry

Valladares, Lewyn 11 1900 (has links)
Undesirable solid oxides and sulphides, known as inclusions, are an inherent product of the steelmaking process that can clog the steel flow during casting. Caster operators can break up the clogged material to improve flow, but this reduces steel quality and yield. Modifying these inclusions using calcium treatment and its effects on industrial processing conditions are the focus of this study. To effectively improve calcium treatment, experimental and industrial data are required to develop models to predict inclusion behaviour. The advantage of experimental testing is that the precise control of chemistry, temperature, alloying elements, and sampling can help identify the effects of each variable. The difficulty, however, is correlating experimental results to real-time industrial processing, where these variables are difficult to control individually. In industry, indirect observations of caster behaviour may give an idea of the effectiveness of the treatment, but this is after the fact. In this study, liquid steel samples were taken at different processing steps without any modification to the process itself to ensure normal shop conditions. The inclusion analysis was conducted using an automated Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and AZtech feature analysis software to determine inclusion characteristics, including population, composition, and size. This study shows 8 sequential calcium-treated steel heats in an industrial setting and their associated clogging behaviour during a cast. The study indicated that a few heats with undermodified alumina inclusions immediately or subsequently affected the casting process leading to a severe clogging event. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

The Design of A New Type Steering Machanism For Wheelchairs

Luo, Kuang-Hong 22 June 2003 (has links)
It¡¦s easy to get the complication of shoulder by using the traditional type of driving a wheelchair, and the move speed of a wheelchair is upper with motor-driven, so makes shimmy or slide usually appearing on caster when the wheelchair is steering .On the other hand, the drive mechanism of wheelchair by single-wheel was developed by the members of MEVL at the same time that this paper was written. Because of these reasons above, this paper analyze the type of steering mechanism and the patents of wheelchair¡¦s steering mechanism first, secondly find the fittest steering mechanism type for a wheelchair. Furthermore, this paper also discusses some irregular conditions of a caster and theirs reasons and how to prove them when a wheelchair is steering or moving with high speed by using several simpler mode of mechanics, such as caster shimmy, the slip angle of a caster, and some irregular cases when wheelchair is driven by single wheel. Finally this paper will design a new type steering mechanism for wheelchair by applied the results of research that above-mentioned, this new steering mechanism not only improve the traditional steering mode of a wheelchair, also avoid several irregular condition above occurring in the caster, moreover, it can be enabled or disabled by user anytime. So this paper expects that the performance of a wheelchair will be raised after the new type steering mechanism is designed.

Assessing manual wheelchair caster design for mobility in winter conditions

Berthelette, Michele 12 September 2016 (has links)
Manual wheelchair users who live in cold climates are faced with daily difficulties related to personal independence and societal inclusion, as their assistive devices are unable to overcome the physical barriers created by snow. Packed snow on sidewalks creates a barrier for wheelchair users as the small caster wheels become embedded in the snow-pack, this leads to upper body fatigue as well as wheelchair tipping, and falling. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method by which the best design could be determined of a group of four commercially available manual wheelchair casters. This method was developed based on the HAAT model of assistive technology design. It was confirmed that snow-packed surfaces, as well as increased inclines, had a significant detrimental effect on the recorded human factors determinants, as well as conventional engineering determinants. / October 2016

Questioning gender : the representation of race and gender in global and local print media responses of the Caster Semenya saga.

Bhula, Vidhya 10 November 2011 (has links)
Examining the print media representations of South African runner, Caster Semenya, is the focal point of this study. Both local and international print media are considered. The dissertation sets out to draw parallels between the representation of Semenya and early 19th century representations of Sarah Baartman. Links between the race of these two women and their “othering” on the basis of their gender are drawn. The study explores the medical and scientific justifications for “othering” these two women, the lack of agency that is attributed to both Semenya and Baartmann, and also discusses the use of humour as a tool of negotiating their “otherness”.

Evolução da microestrutura e da textura durante o processamento de chapas da liga Al-Mn-Fe-Si (3003) produzidas por lingotamento contínuo: um estudo comparativo com o processo semi-contínuo. / Microstructure and texture evolution of the Al-Mn-Fe-Si (3003) aluminum alloy produced from continuous casting process: comparative analysis with semi-continuous casting process.

Martins, Juliana de Paula 25 May 2005 (has links)
The main reason for the development of this PhD Thesis was to compare the microstructures and textures of the 3003 aluminum alloy produced from continuous and semi-continuous casting processes. The roll caster process (continuous casting) has been increasingly used in the aluminum industry. Products usually obtained by means of heavy rolling operations in the past are nowadays obtained with dimensions close to the final ones using the roll caster technology. To understand this new process, microstructures and textures (macrotexture and microtexture) along the thickness of the sheet produced by continuos casting and semi-continuous casting (plates with 250 mm thickness, followed by homogenization and hot rolling) have been investigated. It was possible to verify that materials coming from these two processes did differ each other a lot mainly across the thickness. During roll casting the plastic deformation was large enough to promote the formation of dislocation cells and subgrains. It was also possible to notice that the microstructure, morphology, and grain size from as-cast sample are more homogenous than the ones found in hot rolled samples. Both the sheets obtained by hot rolling and continuous casting have shown a strong texture gradient across the thickness. The predominant texture in both processes is the Brass component {011} . The texture evolution from sheets obtained by roll casting was also determined after rolling and subsequent recrystallization. It shows the presence of typical components of rolling and recrystallization of aluminum. After 91% cold rolling and subsequent recrystallization at 400°C for 1 h, the cube component (recrystallization texture) and the deformation texture were observed. It is well known that this texture minimizes earing effects during deep drawing of aluminum products. Another relevant point in this work was the development of the technique for the extraction of precipitates for the aluminum 3003 alloy. The extraction of precipitates extraction is particularly problematic in aluminum because most of the particles tend to dissolve more readily than the aluminum matrix. Some of the techniques performed are the following: 1. chemical dissolution with iodine in methanol solution; 2. electrolytic dissolution with benzoic acid and hydroxyquinoline in chloroform and methanol; 3. electrolytic dissolution with perchloric acid, butyl-glycol and ethanol; 4. chemical dissolution with phenol solution. Chemical dissolution with the phenol solution was the technique that provided the best results. It was possible to separate precipitates from the aluminum matrix. With this extraction technique it was possible to analyze phase transformations of the intermetallic compound Al6Mn during heat treating of this alloy. The phase transformation of the Al6Mn compound into alfa-AlMnSi, also known as 6-to-alfa transformation, could be followed in detail by means of this technique. Precipitation plays an important role in the recrystallization kinetics and final grain size. Therefore, to understand this behavior, the roll cast aluminum alloy was cold rolled from two distinct starting conditions: as-cast and heat-treated (homogeneized) conditions. It was shown that recrystallization was delayed in the sheet rolled from the as-cast condition. Precipitation has occurred simultaneously with recrystallization, in such a manner that dispersoids did precipitate in the deformed microstructure, preferentially, at subgrain boundaries or at free dislocations. As a result, the rearrangement of the dislocations and further recrystallization nucleation has been significantly retarded.

Mediální zobrazení intersexuality ve sportu / Sport and Intersexuality in the Media

Peštová, Anna January 2013 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Sport and Intersexuality in Media" deals with the topic of intersexuality in professional sport, which was at the centre of media attention during the World Athletics Championship in Berlin in August 2009, as the South African athlete Caster Semenya won on the 800 m track. Because of her sports performance in conjunction with her appearance she had to undergo a sex test and until its evaluation she was excluded from athletic competitions. The aim of the study was to analyse texts published by selected nationally distributed Czech printed journals by using the quantitative content analysis and to describe the image of intersexuality, a publicly infrequently discussed topic, media submit to its readers, to capture any differences in the presentation of intersexuality and intersex people between the analysed media and to evaluate, whether and how the media contribute to retaining of the existing power order discriminating intersex people or whether they try to undermine this order.

Spring som en tjej : en studie om könstester inom friidrott och dess förhållande till artikel 8 och 14 EKMR utifrån ett ras- och genusperspektiv

Ottosson, Sara January 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines gender verifications issues in track and field from a feminist and antiracist perspective. In 2019 the international governing body for the sport of athletics (World Athletics) introduced limits on blood testosterone levels for women with some types of Differences in sex development (DSD) in races from 400 metres to 1 mile. According the eligibility rules Caster Semenya and other athletes with heightened testosterone levels need to lower their testosterone levels in order to be eligible to compete in middle distance running races in the women’s class. This thesis discuss the relationship between gender verifications in athletics and the protection of athletes right to privacy according to article 8 ECHR and prohibition of gender and race discrimination according to article 14 ECHR. The balance between the interests for fair competition in sports and the protection of athletes human rights is an ongoing discussion. Complex relationship between states accountability and international non-governmental sports organizations can put athletes in a vulnerable position.  This paper includes three research questions. Firstly, can the state parties to the ECHR be accountable if the eligibility rules infringe human rights? Secondly, is the eligibility rules in compliance with the right to respect for private and family life according to article 8 ECHR? Thirdly, is the eligibility rules in compliance with prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of sex and race according to article 14 ECHR.

Visibility Grid Method For Efficient Crowd Rendering With Shadows

Kocdemir, Sahin Serdar 01 November 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Virtual crowd rendering have been used in film industry with offine rendering methods for a long time. But its existence in interactive real-time applications such as video games is not so common due to the limited rendering power of current graphics hardware. This thesis describes a novel method to improve shadow mapping performance of a crowded scene by taking into account the screen space visibility of the casted shadow of a crowd instance when rendering the shadow maps. A grid-based visibility mask creation method is proposed which is irrelevant to scene complexity. This improves the rendering performance especially when there are many occluded instances of the crowd which is a common scenario in urban environments and accelerates the usage of crowds in real time applications, such as games. We compute visibility of all agents in a crowd in parallel on the graphics processing unit(GPU) without having a requirement of a stencil buer or light direction dependent shadow mask. Technique also improves the view space rendering time by reducing the visibility check cost of the agents that are located on the invisible areas of the scene. The methodology introduced in this thesis gets more effective in each shadow map rendering pass by re-using the same visibility mask for shadow caster culling and enables many local lights with shadows. We also give a brief information about the state of the art of crowd rendering and shadowing, explaining how suitable the method with the implementations of different shadow mapping approaches. The technique is very well compatible with the modern crowd rendering techniques such as skinned instancing, dynamic level of detail(LOD) determination and GPU-based simulation.
