Searching for Identity in Chinatown: An Architectural Response to Calgary’s Growing Chinese Population

This thesis proposes an architectural design for a public cultural centre for the diverse Chinese immigrant population in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It addresses the history of Chinatown’s formation and how this ethnic community came to be, as well as analyzing how waves of Chinese immigrants contribute to the evolution of Calgary’s Chinatown. The reinterpretation of traditional Chinese architectural concepts and elements in ancient courtyard houses is essential to searching for identity. This reinterpretation studies the spatial organization and structural system, the generation of solids and voids, and the relationship between nature and the built form. This thesis explores a new design for Calgary’s Chinese Cultural Centre by combining traditional Chinese architectural concepts with successful existing and proposed programs to express culture and immigrant integration. It proposes functionality of different courtyards and includes cultural programs such as a performance theatre, heritage and cultural museum, Chinese school, restaurant, exhibition gallery, gymnasium, and a public library.

The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site covers an area of over 47000 hectares in the north-western corner of Gauteng, straddling the boundary between Gauteng and North West provinces. The area is of outstanding universal value as it contains a complex of palaeontological and palaeo – anthropological sites which have yielded some of the most valuable evidence worldwide of the origins of modern humans. Embedded in the rocks found in the numerous dolomitic caves in the area are the fossilised remains of hominids, their lithicultural remains and fossils of other plants, animals and pollen. These give a complete picture of the hominids and their surroundings dating back over 3.3 million years. The richness and variety of these deposits, their excellent preservation in the caves, and the age of the specimens, make this area of world significance. The aim of this dissertation is the development of an architectural product that aids interpretation of the meanings and values inherent in the COH WHS and its context. The design approach is rational and simplicity is explored in order to develop the building as communication medium and introduction to the context. Architecture in ruins

This dissertation investigates the relationship of the Fortifications in Pretoria to the public. The architectural problem of making the public aware of these Fortifications is investigated and responded to by designing a Visitors centre, to draw the public to the Fort, by creating an experience of moving through the landscape. This experience orientates the visitor visually towards various other iconic monuments, by symbolically turning the visitor into a camera, capturing views and experiences for himself. The program also provides facilities for Archaeological research which will be done on various other Fortification ruins and archaeological sites in Pretoria. The visitors experience and interaction with the landscape and the vision of the Fort as artefact contributes to the visitors being made aware of the gradual deterioration of the Fortifications in the city to ruins. The Fortifications themselves are monumental ruins, but by adding to them yet still respecting their heritage qualities, makes this a sensitive and respectful response to an important problem of how to preserve historical artefacts and at the same time utilising them. This thesis presents a follow-up study of young offenders released from secure custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre. It attempted to investigate three questions: What are young offenders' experiences within the community following their release from secure custody?, How do young offenders view their program experiences at the Manitoba Youth Centre? and What are the youn offenders' perceptions regarding the benefits of their program experences toward community adjustement? Twenty-eight youths who had been in secure custody for at least three months and discharged to an address in Winnipeg were interviewed. The study based on a qualitative research model describes the experiences, thoughts and perceptions of these young offenders. The results found that the young offenders' experiences within the community were less than ideal. Most of them lived in several different places, were in school or work for short periods of time and were reinvolved with the law. They viewed their program experiences at the Centre as favourable. Yet, the young offenders felt they did not benefit in the community from these program experiences. The conclusion is that the Manitoba Youth Centre needs to consider factors that have been demonstrated to help young offenders adjust in the community. The recommendations start with the development of theories and the incorporation of intervention strategies. Relapse Prevention is proposed as it takes into consideration many of the youths' comments and suggestions.

Backward bifurcation in HCV transmission dynamics

The thesis is based on the use of mathematical theories and techniques to gain qualitative and quantitative insight into the transmission dynamics of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in an IDU (injecting drug user) population. A deterministic model, which stratifies the IDU population into eight mutually-exclusive compartments (based on epidemiological status), is considered. Rigorous qualitative analysis of the model establishes, for the first time, the presence of the phenomenon of backward bifurcation in HCV transmission dynamics. Three routes (or causes) to such a dynamic phenomenon have been established. Furthermore, five main parameters that play a dominant role on the transmission dynamics of the disease have been identified. Numerical simulations of the model show that the re-infection of recovered individuals has marginal effect on the HCV burden (as measured in terms of the cumulative incidence and prevalence of the disease) in the IDU community.

Det har talats en hel del i media om fritidspedagogers rätt till legitimation samt om fritidspedagogernas yrkesroller. Denna studies syfte är att undersöka hur fritidspedagoger ser på sin egen professionalitet. Fokus riktas på fritidspedagogernas egen syn på deras centrala färdigheter och kunskaper, hur de tror att lärarnas och föräldrarnas syn är på dem, hur fritidspedagogerna själva kan planera och genomföra sin verksamhet och hur avsaknaden av legitimation påverkar deras yrkesroll. Studien har använt sig av en kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Fritidspedagogernasintervjuer analyseras med hjälp av tidigare forskning samt utvalda begrepp och teori. Det framkom att fritidspedagogerna hade liknande åsikter av relevanta färdigheter och kunskaper, social förmåga, omsorgsförmåga och flexibilitet var några av dem. Detta var även något som fritidspedagogerna uppfattade att många av lärarna och föräldrarna höll med om. I sin planering och genomförande av sina arbetsuppgifter upplever flera av fritidspedagogerna att de är rädda att skolans verksamhet tar över för mycket och de är oroliga att bli reducerade till hjälplärare. Näst intill alla av fritidspedagogerna anser att de inte är berörda av legitimationsfrågan då den inte avgör hur de utförsina arbetsuppgifter. Dock resonerar flera av dem att det kan komma att påverka synen på deras yrke samt kårens professionaliseringssträvan.
