Emotional Chairs - A study of how emotional objects enter our lives

Jensen, Halfdan Hauch January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a design study of how everyday objects with embedded digital emotionality can be expected to be accepted into peoples lives. Through the design and evaluation of a chair and a stool with digital emotional features, the project explores the way these objects are given presence, and let into peoples lives. By placing them in the homes of volunteers for a shorter time, the project zooms in on the initial meeting with more emotional everyday objects. The project defines the creation of personality and narratives around the objects as being good design assets in designing for emotional relations. Further it states, and discusses, how balancing detailing and open/ended design features are important in both a general design perspective and when creating personality and narratives.

Leadership Styles and Cultural Sensitivity of Department Chairs at Texas Public Universities

Hernandez-Katz, Melissa 05 1900 (has links)
As the U.S. population diversifies, so do its higher education institutions. Leadership at these institutions should be prepared for this diversification of students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this study was to gain greater knowledge about the leadership styles and cultural sensitivity of department chairs. Survey research was used to determine if department chairs’ leadership styles correlated with their cultural sensitivity. The target population was department chairs from public universities in the state of Texas. The survey was distributed to 406 randomly selected department chairs. The participants completed three measures: Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LDBQ) for leadership style, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) for cultural sensitivity, and a demographic questionnaire (gender, age range, race/ethnicity, and years of service as department chair). The sample included 165 usable surveys (40% return rate). The department chairs were primarily male (72%), White (78%), and over 50 (71%) years of age. First, a statistically significant negative correlation (r = -.431, p < .0001) occurred between LBDQ overall scores and overall ISS scores: As chairs scored higher on leadership ability, they scored lower on intercultural sensitivity. Second, leadership style by demographic variable displayed mixed results. No significant difference was found for leadership style by age, gender, years of service, or region of service. For ethnicity, White participants scored significantly lower than Minority participants on the LBDQ scales of consideration (t [162] = -2.021, p = .045), structure (t [162] = -2.705, p = .008), and overall (t [162] = -2.864, p = .005). Minority participants might work more diligently to increase their leadership abilities based on their higher LDBQ scores. Third, findings on intercultural sensitivity by demographic variable were mixed. No statistical significance was observed between any of the ISS scales and age, gender, years of service, and region. For ethnicity, Minority participants’ scores showed significantly lower intercultural sensitivity than White participants scores on two of six ISS subscales: interaction enjoyment (t = -2.46, p = .015) and respect (t = 2.107, p = .037). It was concluded that the Minority and White department chairs’ leadership style and intercultural sensitivity differences could be due in part to differences in the chairs’ ethnic affiliations, associated cultural backgrounds, and views of dominant versus non-dominant cultures. Recommendations for study are included.

As cátedras Unesco: análise de uma proposta para a cooperação ineternacional interuniversitária na América Latina / Unesco Chairs: analyzing a proposal for international interuniversity cooperation in Latin America

Paula, Luciane Miranda de 10 December 2010 (has links)
The study of relationships between international university cooperation and the production and sharing of knowledge among Latin American universities allows us to understand the context of discussions and theories on the contemporary higher education system. Thus, the objective of this dissertation consists of analyzing the factors that contribute towards the importance of the UNESCO Chairs Program in Latin American universities, proposed by UNESCO as an agent for fostering international university cooperation aiming at promoting cultural development and exchange in emerging countries. This research is based on a theoretical referential of Studies on Higher Education and International Cooperation in Latin America found in literature, aimed at understanding the nature, object, structure and dynamics applied to the UNITWIN Program of UNESCO Chairs. As regards the methodological treatment, we combined our documentary analysis and qualitative research with our interviews conducted with chair holders. First we searched for the theoretical referential of UNESCOs origin and the theories and models of international cooperation in Latin American universities. As regards the qualitative research, we analyzed the indicators that create and share knowledge among the universities where there are Chairs in Latin America. We administered a questionnaire and interviewed chair holders both at universities and UNESCO. We visited UNESCO as well as some universities with Chairs. We analyzed the reports based on the theoretical referential, and the results of the study greatly contributed to understanding the influence of research groups in producing knowledge, which is the key element of cooperation and represents the influence wielded by an outside organization on a highly self-referenced institution like the university. We also observed another result, namely that higher education institutions have a crucial role in forming networks designed to produce and disseminate knowledge in Latin America, thus, taking on the role of agents in the process of social and technological innovation in our contemporary world.

Ergonomi : vikten av rätt sittande / Ergonomic : the importance of a correct sitting

Jönsson, Johanna January 2007 (has links)
The science of ergonomic means the human in work, which also can be defined as the combination between the human and the working tools. With this as a background it proves that there are high demands on the chairs that are meant for work. The chair is supposed to complement the user to reach an optimal ergonomic sitting. The purpose of this report is to give an insight in the ergonomic sitting and how workchairs are designed. Ergonomics means that one way to reach an ergonomic sitting is with an open hip angle, which brings out a dynamic sitting. The dynamic sitting gives the user an active sitting. This can partly be achieved through a sitting like the principle for the balance chair. To further achieve a good sitting there are laws that contents the work environment, which controls the sitting on workplaces.
