The Effects of Maternal Characteristics on Adolescent Emotion Regulation

Phillips, Jennifer J. 10 May 2021 (has links)
Emotion regulation is an important skill to acquire during childhood, as an inability to do so can lead to negative outcomes such as aggression, anxiety, eating disorders, and personality disorders during adolescence. Much research has demonstrated that maternal factors play a role in childhood emotion regulation; however, little research has looked at how these factors might predict emotion regulation during adolescence. Therefore, my thesis study assessed how maternal personality, parenting behaviors, and emotion regulation during middle childhood and adolescence predicted adolescent emotion regulation. Specifically, I hypothesized that maternal parenting behaviors during middle childhood would positively predict adolescent cognitive reappraisal, that this association would be moderated by maternal intrapersonal and interpersonal personality, and that maternal cognitive reappraisal during middle childhood would positively predict adolescent cognitive reappraisal. Participants included 122 mother-child dyads who provided data on parenting and maternal emotion regulation when the children were 9-years-old, in addition to data on child emotion regulation, maternal emotion regulation, and maternal personality when the children were adolescents. My initial hypotheses were not supported by the data, but post-hoc analyses revealed that maternal emotion suppression during middle childhood and adolescence predicts adolescent emotion suppression and that this association between maternal emotion suppression during middle childhood and adolescent emotion suppression was moderated by maternal intrapersonal personality. These results support the idea that maternal characteristics continue to play a role in shaping emotion regulation in children through adolescence, but not in the manner I had originally predicted. / M.S. / Emotion regulation refers to our ability to adjust to changes in our emotions. Difficulty with emotion regulation early in life can lead to negative outcomes such as aggression, anxiety, eating disorders, and personality disorders later in life. Maternal factors, like parenting, emotion regulation, and personality, affect emotion regulation during early childhood, but the research is lacking when it comes to looking at how these maternal factors might predict emotion regulation abilities during adolescence. This is important to consider, as adolescence is a time when we see some of these negative outcomes associated with difficulties in emotion regulation emerge. Therefore, my thesis study looked at how these maternal factors during middle childhood and adolescence predicted adolescent emotion regulation. Specifically, I hypothesized that optimal maternal parenting behaviors during middle childhood would predict better adolescent emotion regulation, that maternal personality during adolescence would moderate this association, and that better maternal emotion regulation during middle childhood would predict better emotion regulation during adolescence. Participants included 122 mother-child dyads. Mothers provided data on parenting and their own emotion regulation when their children were 9-years-old and data on their own personality and emotion regulation when the children were adolescents. Adolescents self-reported their own emotion regulation. My initial hypotheses were not supported, later analyses showed that maternal emotion regulation during middle childhood predicted adolescent emotion regulation and that this association was moderated by maternal personality. These results support the idea that maternal characteristics continue to play a role in shaping emotion regulation in children through adolescence.

Linking Work Design and Corporate Social Responsibility Through an Exploratory Model for the Interdependency of Work Characteristics and Corporate Social Responsibility Orientation

Kurup, Priya Darshini 2011 December 1900 (has links)
Driven by the demands of drastic changes in today’s nature of work due to globalization and technological advances, researchers have continually revisited, redesigned, and restructured work design processes in a quest to identify the key characteristics that can result in desired organizational outcomes. Specifically, in current times, organizations are looking to develop socially responsible outcomes, otherwise referred as corporate social responsibility (CSR). A possible link between work design and CSR has been postulated by researchers, but few studies have emerged where the associations between work design and CSR factors are examined. The purpose of this study was to explore the link between work design and CSR using a work design-CSR conceptual model that was developed based on previous literature. The model depicted relationships between work design factors and CSR factors. Work design factors included work characteristics and worker characteristics. Work characteristics were measured using task, knowledge, social, and contextual characteristics; while worker characteristics were measured using personality traits. CSR Orientation (CSRO) was used as a reflective indicator of CSR at the individual level. The study sample consisted of 941 job incumbents of a public education institution in Texas. The data were collected using an online survey that included the work design questionnaire, the short Big Five Inventory, and the CSRO questionnaire. The model was tested using Structural Equation Modeling. Based on the results, a significant association between work characteristics and CSRO factors were obtained. As hypothesized, associations were found between task characteristics and profit CSRO, and between social characteristics and legal CSRO and philanthropic CSRO. The knowledge characteristics were found to have negative association to philanthropic CSRO. The findings also suggest that jobs that are high on problem solving and job autonomy had a negative association to philanthropic CSRO. Similarly, as the job complexity increased, individuals’ orientation towards profit making decreased, and information processing was found to be linked to legal compliance. Research and practice implications of these results are discussed.

Because of the importance of common bean crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on Brazilian basic feeding, a research was carried out on the Experimental Lageado farm, which belongs to FCA/UNESP, campus of Botucatu - SP. It had the objective of evaluating the response to nitrogen topdressing in dry season period in two soil tillage systems. The experimental design used was the randomized blocks in split-plot design, with four replications. The parcels were represented by systems of soil tillage: conventional soil tillage and no-tillage. The subdivision of the parcels was constituted by doses of nitrogen topdressing: (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha-1 of N). Urea was the source of nitrogen used. The cultivar used was Pérola and it was sowed in the spacing of 0,45 meters in succession to black oat (fall sowing) and to pearl millet (spring sowing), during the years of 2002/2003. It can be concluded that no-tillage promoted a higher percentage of covering of the soil for black oat and pearl millet and promoted a higher nitrogen content in shoot for pearl millet crop. The soil tillage systems didn't influence at the grain productivity of the common bean. The doses of nitrogen topdressing interfered in several productivity characteristics of the common bean, and presented the maximum productivity of 1.870 kg ha-1 was obtained with the N dose of 78 kg ha-1. The physiologic quality of the seeds has been influenced positive by the doses of nitrogen, as well as the protein content, being found interaction soil tillage x doses at the cooking time.

Characteristics of adults with advanced hiv/aids referred to community nurses

Lucey, Adrienne, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2001 (has links)
Community nurses have a critical role in caring for people and families affected by HIV/AIDS in the home setting. Despite this, there is a dearth of Australian literature describing the health needs of these clients who are referred to them. This study identified the demographic, clinical and psychoemotional aspects of adult clients with HIV/AIDS in Sydney, Australia, who were referred to community nurses and died between 1993 and 1995. Retrospective data from the records of 73 clients identified on 171 Community Nursing Referral Forms completed within the study period from an inpatient HIV/AIDS Unit was analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The sample was demographically similar to the general population of people with HIV/AIDS during the study period. The most commonly identified clinical aspects of clients included oral candida, mycobacterium avium complex, anaemia, drug intolerance, cytomegalovirus, pain, fever, diarrhoea, weight loss and cough. The most commonly identified psychoemotional variables were depressed mood, anxiety, grief and nonadherence to suggested interventions, with the most common emergent theme being the physical effects of HIV/AIDS illness. Emotional support, symptom monitoring and home assessments were the most common requests made of community nurses. The study sample represented 14% of people who died following AIDS in New South Wales during this known peak period of AIDS diagnoses and deaths following AIDS. As a result of this study, documentation exists describing the characteristics of clients with advanced HIV/AIDS referred to community nurses. Current and future clients with advanced HIV/AIDS referred to community nurses may experience a similar clinical picture to that identified in this study. The findings can be used to reveal relationships amongst the key variables; lay the foundation for further comparative, theory or hypothesis driven studies; and demonstrate how this influences the community nursing role, strategies, interventions and outcomes.

What’s mine is yours, or is it? Knowledge sharing in voluntary project-based organizations : The case of AIESEC – the largest international student-run organization

Petrauskaite, Gabriele January 2012 (has links)
In knowledge economy, organizational knowledge is considered to be a critical strategic resource which may help the organization to achieve competitive advantage; therefore, knowledge sharing, as one of the knowledge management processes, attracts the attention of both researchers and practitioners. Knowledge sharing may bring many benefits such as personal development for the employees and knowledge accumulation for the organization. However, at the same time it is very challenging because employees may be very mobile, too occupied to engage in knowledge sharing, or just unwilling to share their valuable knowledge. Nevertheless, although many organizations have started to invest heavily in various knowledge sharing mechanisms, quite often these processes are not effective because various organizational and individual factors impede the usage of those mechanisms. This study seeks to increase the understanding of how and which of such factors affect knowledge sharing in voluntary project-based organizations. Ten in-depth interviews have been conducted with the project managers in AIESEC, the largest international student organization, in order to find out what KS mechanisms they use, and what enables or hinders KS in this organization. It was found that in this organization KS takes place at all organizational levels, and the most popular KS mechanisms are documents and social interaction. Various documents include planning and tracking tools, proposals for sponsors, budget spread-sheets, feedback forms from participants and companies, and reports about functional areas. Social interaction comprises individual and group meetings, including trainings, coaching or mentoring, conversations over the phone and software Skype, discussions in conferences and communication in social groups online. So there is a balance between the KS mechanisms used to personalize and codify knowledge. However, the individualized KS mechanisms dominate on the individualization- institutionalization dimension. Also AIESEC members share all types of knowledge: tacit and explicit, individual and collective. Factors affecting KS can be categorized in 5 groups: Organizational context, Interpersonal and Team characteristics, Cultural characteristics, Individual characteristics, and Motivational factors. As KS in AIESEC takes place quite intensively, not surprisingly more KS facilitators were identified. The most significant ones in each group are as follows: the organizational culture and structure; diversity and strong social ties; willingness to help, and structure and exactness; self-efficiency and personal characteristics such as talkativeness, open-mindedness, empathy, motivation, responsibility and ambitiousness; perceived personal benefits, interpersonal trust, and organizational commitment. The few factors identified that might impede KS in AIESEC are the lack of time, lack of KS regulation and some negative cultural attitudes.

Organizacijos sisteminis projektas tarptautinių pervežimų įmonės pavyzdžiu / The systematic project of the organization by example of international transit company

Skališienė, Olga 07 January 2013 (has links)
Darbo tikslas: Tarptautinių pervežimų organizacijos sisteminio projekto kūrimas. Teorinėje dalyje atlikau organizacijos, kaip socialinės – ekonominės sistemos, analizę. Visų pirma analizavau sistemos sampratą bei jos atsiradimą sąlygojančius veiksnius, pagrindinių sistemos sąvokos tyrėjų mokslinius darbus, sistemų klasifikaciją. Toliau nagrinėjau sistemos pagrindines charakteristikas – funkcinę, morfologinę, procesinę. Šių charakteristikų nustatymo pagrindinius kriterijus. Atskirai nagrinėjau valdymo sistemos sandaros ypatybes. Analitinėje dalyje sudariau organizacijos sisteminio projektavimo metodiką. Aprašiau, kaip turi būti nustatomos organizacijos funkcijos, projektuojama jos sandara, charakterizuojami joje vykstantys procesai. Projektinėje dalyje, naudodama savo parašytą sisteminio projektavimo metodiką, sukūriau tarptautinių pervežimų organizacijos sisteminį projektą. Nustačiau kokias funkcijas atliks kuriama organizacija, suprojektavau jos organizacinę sandarą, valdymo struktūrą, charakterizavau joje vykstančius procesus. / The aim of the paper was the creation of the systemic project for the international transit organization. In theoretical part the analysis of the organization as a social-economical system was done. Firstly, I analyzed the conception of the system and factors that determine its occurrence, as well as the main works of the researchers and classification of the systems. Further, I scrutinized the main characteristics of the system, which are as follows: functional, morphological and procedural, and criterions for identification of those characteristics. The structure of the system was analyzed separately. In the analytical part, I composed the methodology for systemic engineering of the organization, described how the functions of the organization are to be determined, how its architecture is designed and how processes occurring within the organization are characterized. In the design part, using my own methodology, I created the systematic project of the international transit organization, identified its functions, planned its organizational structure, leadership structure and characterized the processes occurring within the organization.
