Os resultados obtidos também demonstram a permanência da produção, não obstante questões políticas, como a reação à comunidade - e à cultura - alemã nos períodos da I e II Guerras Mundiais / The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to approach German-speaking Children's literature books production in the Brazilian publishing market context, pointing out, by means of data systematization and interpretation, the developments of that production throughout the history of books in Brazil. Its premise is that German titles aimed at the Brazilian public contribute towards the making up of our literary system in representing a considerable share of works that reach the reader, either through translations or adapted translations. The research made possible not only to outline a repertoire of authors and works, and the different conditions which determine their publication, but also to verify the particularities of the books in circulation. In many cases, several of these books are legitimated by German Criticism, meeting the needs of the Brazilian publishing market and the Brazilian Children's literature trends. The results obtained also demonstrate the enduring of the production in spite of political issues, such as the reaction against German community and culture during the World War I and World War II periods

Digital publishing in Ghana : a focus on children's e-books

Ry-Kottoh, Lucy Afeafa January 2017 (has links)
Adopting a mixed methods approach consisting of interviews, focus group discussions and surveys, this thesis investigates the state of digital publishing in Ghana within the context of Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory. With a focus on children’s ebooks, it examines publishers’, authors’ and readers’ levels of adoption of ebooks, and their motivations for, perceptions of, and challenges or barriers to, going digital or otherwise. It also assesses the state of digital infrastructure and human resource capacity in Ghana to support the growing ebook sector, and identifies the knowledge and skills deficit in the industry in order to inform the development of courses that will be incorporated into the BA Publishing Studies programme at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This thesis reveals that the level of adoption of ebook publishing among publishers and authors was relatively low given the interest demonstrated by young readers. The latter were very interested in ebooks and read mainly foreign content because it was freely available and accessible online. Publishers’ and authors’ motivations for publishing ebooks include visibility, the opportunity to reach a much wider audience, and the novelty of publishing digitally to keep abreast of current trends so as to transform the local industry. Some barriers to adoption identified were the cost associated with acquiring infrastructure, the security of online content, inadequate information about ebooks, non-use of ebooks, and infrastructural challenges such as inconsistent electricity supply and poor Internet penetration. The thesis also identified an awareness disconnect between publishers and their local readers: publishers perceive ebooks to be for the international market and, as such, do not focus on promoting them in the local market; thus, local readers are not aware of the existence of ebooks. Expanding on Rogers’ adoption categories, two new categories were created, incidental adopters and perceptual late adopters, to accommodate individuals who do not fall within Rogers’ established adopter categories. To increase the spread of digital publishing and the uptake of ebooks in the Ghanaian book market, the thesis recommends the elimination of the barriers to adoption and, most importantly, advocates training and skills development to reduce the knowledge and skills deficit gap among publishers and authors.

The Trombone in Children's Literature: A Survey and Contribution

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Literature is an important source for children to learn about many aspects of life, including music, and, more specifically, the trombone as a special type of musical instrument. The project at hand seeks to encourage the introduction of the trombone to young children through books and stories in which the instrument is featured prominently. Seven such books by various authors are identified and analyzed, and a study guide for each is presented. In addition, a brief history of children’s literature and a discussion of its use in the music classroom provide context for these seven books as well as any music-themed literature. Finally, the centerpiece of this project is the creation of a new book intended for children and featuring the trombone, written and illustrated by the present author. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

'Dobraia Staraia Angliia' in Russian perception : literary representations of Englishness in translated children's literature in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia

Goodwin, Elena January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores Englishness and its representation in translated children’s literature in Russia during the Soviet period (from 1917 until 1991) and the post-Soviet period (from 1992 until 2015). It focuses on Russian translations of English children’s classics published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War. It studies how Russian translations of English children’s literature construct literary portrayals of Englishness in varied socio-cultural and historical contexts. It investigates the complex processes involved in re-creating national specificities of English literary texts in Russian culture. The Anglo-centric essence of Englishness – or ‘dobraia staraia Angliia’ [good old England] – is expressed to a greater degree in the classics of English children’s literature. It is this particular idealised Englishness that is represented in the Russian translations. This thesis demonstrates that various manifestations of Englishness are modified in Russian translations and that the degree of modification varies according to changes in the political climate in Russia. A significant role is played by ideology – of a prevailing political nature during in the Soviet Union and a commercial ideology in post-Soviet Russia. The first chapter lays the theoretical foundation for the whole thesis and outlines the methodology adopted. Chapters 2 and 3 set out the contextual background for understanding Englishness by focusing on the question of Englishness perceived from English and Russian perspectives, and discussing the main tendencies of representing Englishness in both cultures. Chapter 4 presents the historical background by highlighting the political and cultural circumstances in which Russian translations were made. The second half of the thesis (chapters five, six and seven) focuses on the analysis of the representation of Englishness in Russian translations. Chapter 5 discusses which English children’s books, published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War, were selected for translation and at what point between 1918 and 2015. Chapters 6 and 7 present the case studies in this thesis. These provide an analysis of how different manifestations of Englishness were translated and, taking into account the Soviet and post-Soviet historical contexts, examine why they were translated in certain ways.

The shadowed corners of sunlit ruins: Gothic elements in twentieth century children's adventure fiction

Wagenaar, Peter Simon January 1991 (has links)
This thesis examines the way in which children's adventure fiction makes use of Gothic features, how these features have been modified for a younger audience and how these modifications have been influenced by other developments in children's and popular fiction: Chapter One sets out to define the nature of Gothic and isolate those aspects of it relevant to the proposed study. It puts forward a theory to account for the movement of Gothic trends into later children's fiction. Chapter Two examines the use of landscape, setting and atmospheric effects in Gothic and the way in which children's fiction has used similar trappings to create similar effects. Children's fiction, emphasising pleasurable excitement rather than fear has, however, muted these effects somewhat and played down the role of the supernatural, so intrinsic to Gothic. Chapter Three emphasises the Gothic's use of stereotypes, focusing on the portrayal of heroes and heroines. Those of children's fiction are portrayed very similarly to those of Gothic and the chapter compares and, on occasion, contrasts them noting, inter alia, their adherence to rigid moral codes and narrowly defined norms of masculine and feminine behaviour. Chapter Four looks at the portrayal of villains and the way in which their appearance defines them as such (as, indeed, does that of heroes and heroines). It examines in some detail their relationship to and interaction with the heroes and heroines, noting, for example, the 'pseudo-parental' role of villains who are characteristically older and in socially approved positions to exert power over heroes and heroines. The Conclusion addresses the fantasy aspect of these novels, referred to several times in passing in the course of earlier chapters, and comments on how the features detailed in Chapters Two, Three and Four all operate within the conventions of a fantasy.

Para teorizar e historicizar essas categorias, recorro a alguns retóricos greco-latinos e renascentistas, a alguns ensaístas do século XX e a neurocientistas. Procuro mostrar a funcionalidade e colaboração dessas categorias por meio do estudo do livro O prato azul-pombinho, de Cora Coralina, com desenhos de Angela Lago. / Abstract: The illustrated children¿s book is a ¿cultural object that blends visual and verbal codes¿ (LAJOLO, ZILBERMAN, 1984). To deal with this blend, five categories are suggested: 1) text support; 2) graphic enunciation; 3) visuality, i.e., mental imagery that the text elicit to the reader¿s mind¿s eye; 4) image, hence, illustration, as visual text; 5) dialogue between text and illustration. To theorize and historicize these categories, I discuss some Greek, Roman and Renaissance rhetoricians, some XX century essayists and some neuroscientists. I attempt to show the collaboration and usefulness of these categories, analyzing Cora Coralina¿s book O prato azul pombinho, with drawings by Angela Lago. / Doutorado / Literatura e Outras Produções Culturais / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária
