Spreading Seeds: Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds and His Performative Personality Received in the West

Wu, Wei 01 January 2017 (has links)
In 2010, Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds made its debut in Tate Modern, which promoted Ai to be one of the most famous and respected contemporary Chinese artists. This Conceptual art work has multiple layers of meanings, which all corresponds to the Western expectations for a successful contemporary Chinese artist. In fact, the Western art world has long held bias and stereotypes towards international artists. Ai chose to perform his personality to conform to the expectations and Western ideologies, which brought him international fame. On the other hand, other Chinese artists, including Cai Guo-Qiang and Zhou Chunya, don't totally agree with these Western ideologies, and therefore their fame in the society are less distinguished than Ai.

Méthode de création numérique et interactivité inconsciente entre philosophie de l’oeuvre et psychologie du participant : ré-exploration de la peinture traditionnelle chinoise de manière numérique en utilisant l’installation artistique interactive / Method of digital creation and unconscious interactivity between philosophy of artwork and psychology of participant : digital re-exploration of traditional Chinese painting using interactive art installation

Huang, Yiyuan 14 June 2016 (has links)
Our research deals with the problem of expression of meaning and artistic philosophy toward individual understanding by using, in an unconscious way, digital interactivity. Thus, we will realize some interactive art installation experiments that are based on a profound analysis of traditional art and innovative technology, as well as philosophy, aesthetics and psychology (especially on cognition and unconscious), also an analysis of unconscious and psychotherapy. We asked two central questions: what is the relationship between philosophy and psychology? How to use digital interactions to influence understanding unconsciously? For answering these questions, we focus on the expression of the artistic philosophy and individual understanding related to digital art visualization and innovative interactive technologies.First, we focus on research of the aesthetic of traditional Chinese art, traditional Chinese philosophy and digital technology. We propose to create an “interaction scenario” during conception. Otherwise, we created an interactive art installation based on the hybridization between the Qi philosophy and brain waves. The objective is not to make a digital artistic demonstration, but to better introduce the relationship between innovative technologies and philosophical understanding. Next, the research focuses on psychology (cognition and unconscious) to achieve a new interactive method named “unconscious interactivity”. This method is implemented by another interactive art installation including brain control, olfactory suggestion and body perception.

Operational Strategies of International Auction Companies in Taiwan

Teng, Chual Hsin Unknown Date (has links)
The main areas of Chinese art market are Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China; however, the developing background, time and model in each area are quite different. Among the three, Taiwan is the earliest and the most developed market for Chinese oil paintings because of its full preservation of Chinese culture and humanities. Taiwan almost dominates the market trend of “20th Century Chinese Art”. In 1980s, the economy in Taiwan was booming and commercial activities were very active which lead to thriving art market. Sotheby’s foresaw the opportunity to carry out auction business in Taiwan. Therefore, the company established Taiwan branch office in 1981 and upgraded the branch to auction center in 1992, holding the first auction in Taiwan on March 22nd in the same year. Its competitor, Christie’s, established Taiwan branch in 1991. Unlike Sotheby’s, Christie’s formed a joint venture to enter Taiwan. It established “Christie’s Swire” Taiwan in 1991 and started its first auction in October 10th, 1993. The two global auction companies coming to Taiwan to hold auctions drove Taiwan’s art auction industry to be geared to international standards. Furthermore, Sotheby’s and Christie’s coming has transformed Taiwan to become the most mature art market of 20th Century Chinese Art. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the operational strategies of Sotheby’s and Christie’s in Taiwan in the 90s. By analyzing their strategies and resource bases, we can understand how heterogeneous resources affect their competitiveness, sustainable competitive advantages, and pursuing of growth opportunities. Because most Taiwanese local auction houses are small and have less competitive advantage, facing the strong growth of Asian art market and potential competition of foreign auction houses, I hope that my research findings can help their strategic thinking and strategy formation to capture the business opportunities in 20th Century Chinese Art. This research finds that the core strategy to make Sotheby’s and Christie’s successful in Taiwan art market is “adaption”, which is a poly-centric adaption in which the companies are pretty familiar with local conditions and culture of the host country. As for the impact these two companies have on Taiwan art auction industry, this research finds that Sotheby’s and Christie’s coming not only help Taiwan settle the norms of auction and make Taiwan to be geared to international standards, but also drive galleries, art fairs and other related art industries upgrading. The successful auctions in Taiwan have also stimulated the development of other industries, such as hotels, restaurants, conventions, exhibitions, and luxury industry. ※ Keywords: Resource-based view, Sotheby’s, Christie’s, 20th Century Chinese Art.

Čínská sbírka Ludvíka Kuby v kontextu doby a malířova díla / The Chinese Collection of Ludvík Kuba in Historical Context and the Context of his Oeuvre

Daňková, Lucie January 2019 (has links)
(in English) The master's thesis The Chinese Collection of Ludvík Kuba in Historical Context and the Context of his Oeuvre is focused on works, ethnographic interests and contacts of Czech painter Ludvík Kuba in connection with his collection of Chinese art and the context of the popularity of Chinese culture amongst Czech modern painters. The author will also pay attention to the history of collecting Chinese art in former Czechoslovakia and to some objects collected by Kuba in particular. The thesis aims to reconstruct the collection of Chinese art amassed by Ludvík Kuba, using period photographs and information from institutions that house the artist's estate (Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, National Gallery in Prague, Polabské muzeum v Poděbradech, and others.) The artist's book Moje Čína (My China), as well as other sources (period articles, correspondence), will be used as source material, too. The information gathered about Kuba's former collection of Chinese art will serve the purpose of deeper reflection of the extent of Chinese influences in Kuba's art, as well as his role in the process of establishing of Asian art collecting by modern Czech artists of his day.

"A Blossoming Tree": A Study and Interpretive Guide to the Songs of Nan-Chang Chien on Selected Poems of Muren Hsi

Tsai, Wei-Shu 05 1900 (has links)
According to a recent United Nations report, China's population of 1.4 billion represents 19% of the world's entire population of 7.6 billion. As the distance between east and west contracts in business, so too do the arts. This dissertation focuses on six selected contemporary Chinese art songs composed by Nan-Chang Chien. By providing the references of musical facts, synopsis of the poems, word-for-word translation, IPA transcription, poetic translation, and interpretive and performance guides, singers and pianists will have an overall understanding and detailed directions for learning the Chinese language and Chinese art songs. This dissertation also provides the foundation and model for further exploration and research into Chinese art sing literature by scholars in the west.
