Ensaios sobre decisão, incerteza e escolha social no contexto políticoMariani, Chantós Guilherme Antunes January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation presents two essays on decision, uncertainty and social choice in the electoral context. The first essay theoretically approaches the topic of ambiguous campaign discourses, relating it to the decision theory under uncertainty, and showing what effects it can have on individual and social decision-making processes. The second essay analyzes the freedom of choice aspects of the electoral process when there is uncertainty about the characteristics of candidates, using two axiomatic approaches of freedom that are present in the literature.

CONSTITUTING THE POLITICAL: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON POLITICAL LIBERALISMPontin, Fabricio 01 December 2013 (has links)
In this thesis I will attempt to develop a phenomenological account for Political Liberalism. My hypothesis is that a re-articulation of the main issues in transcendental phenomenology as it relates to social philosophy, first in a genetic sense (as developed by Alfred Schutz), but also in a generative context (as developed by Bernhard Waldenfels), provides us with a methodological ground that can instigate a more complex account for the questions of social choice and the way in which we establish preferences. My thesis is that such a complex account of social choice can motivate us to focus on the disordered nature of our constitution of preferences, and point at the importance of a deep comprehension of historicity, along with a defense of freedom of speech as a tool for resignification of social values.

Ideographic usage of "choice" in contemporary abortion rhetoricSnider, Sarah Jane January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Speech Communication, Theater, and Dance / Timothy R. Steffensmeier / This work explores the emergence and evolution of the rhetoric choice rhetoric as it pertains to contemporary American abortion politics. <Choice> is explored from an ideographic perspective, borrowing from the theoretical framework for ideographic rhetorical criticism established by Michael Calvin McGee. The analysis begins with a diachronic analysis of the emergence of the ideograph of <choice> within the law with an investigation of the written decisions in four Supreme Court cases central to the construction of the right to choose: Roe v. Wade (1973), Maher v. Roe (1977), Harris v. McRae (1980), and Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (1989). This investigation reveals a synchronic relationship between <choice> and another higher order ideograph, <liberty>. The criticism continues with an investigation of the usage of <choice> by pro-choice advocates in two documents published by NARAL Pro-Choice America, Choices: Women Speak About Abortion is a collection of women's narratives about their experiences obtaining an abortion, and Breaking Barriers, a guide for the development and implementation of proactive policy campaigns for pro-choice advocates. McGee's method is employed to investigate the ideographic usage of <choice> within these documents, revealing the ideographic abstraction that associates the alleged idea content of ideographs. This ideographic analysis reveals the inability of <choice> to live up to its alleged idea content as a result of the limitations inherent in the grounding of <choice> within the higher order ideograph of <liberty> and the impact of these limitations on particular populations, mainly indigent women in the United States.

Choices in Reinforcer DeliveryLaw, Sarah Ann 08 1900 (has links)
The current study consisted of two experiments, both of which were comparisons of choice conditions replicated across four participants. Four typically-developing pre-school children participated in this study. Experiment 1 evaluated participants' preference for choosing consequent stimuli prior to engaging in academic tasks (pre-session choice) versus choosing consequent stimuli each time criterion for reinforcement had been met within the session (within-session choice). In Experiment 2, preference for choice-making was evaluated when outcomes for both choice and no-choice conditions were identical. For two participants, results indicated strong preference for choice-making.

Factors influencing student choice to continue participation in an alternative education programMartin, Douglas Lynn 01 January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to identify students' reasons for choosing to participate in the San Joaquin County Office of Education's Alternative Programs. The major areas studied were (a) curricula, (b) teacher instruction, (c) teacher and student relationship, (d) school climate, and (e) teacher and student ratio. The study also examined the relationship between these areas and their importance in contributing to students attending and remaining in school. Data were gathered from two different sources: (a) student surveys of 104 randomly selected students who have been enrolled in the alternative program for a period of six months and had the opportunity to return to their school district of residence; (b) interviews with 20 randomly selected students who participated in the student survey. Analysis of the data suggested that factors such as subject matter, teacher instruction, teacher and student relationship, school climate, and class size are influential in students choosing to attend and participate in the alternative education program. Evidence supported the notion that many of these factors are interrelated. Data supports the research regarding factors within the classroom that influence students, decisions to attend and participate in school. In addition, data supports the need to provide options to a diverse school population. The study provides recommendations for administrators and teachers of the alternative education program to continue promotion of a positive school culture which may result in positive student outcomes.
