Este trabalho está estruturado a partir de três diferentes e concomitantes frentes de pesquisa (cujos suportes metodológicos são discutidos na Introdução) e traz uma abordagem diversificada acerca da Regência coral infantojuvenil. Parte-se de uma pesquisa social com 52 regentes que, em suas respostas ao questionário apresentado, identificam características, desafios e dificuldades de ordem social e técnica no desenvolvimento de seus grupos e nos oferecem dados sobre o atual contexto em que a atividade coral é realizada. Com a análise desses dados, foram eleitos três focos de pesquisa bibliográfica, referentes às principais questões colocadas pelos regentes: a própria Regência, a Técnica Vocal e a Educação Musical. Assim, foram levantados pontos de vista de variados autores referentes a esses itens,que tradicionalmente fazem parte da formação do regente e compõem o conjunto de saberes, competências e habilidades desse profissional. Segue-se uma discussão sobre elementos estruturais dos coros e sobre os aspectos de um planejamento em canto coral, visando facilitar e organizar as tarefas do regente, especialmente no que concerne aos procedimentos de ensaio e aos processos de criação e recriação na música coral. A pesquisa-ação foi realizada a partir doPCIU! (Projeto Coral Infantojuvenil da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul), um grupo coral infantojuvenil criado especificamente para os fins desta pesquisa, que perpassa toda a discussão e sintetiza o todo, na medida em que se observa o desenvolvimento do coro e se analisam as atividades e escolhas técnicaspresentes nos ensaios. As dificuldades relatadas pelos colegas regentes corais participantes da pesquisa servem de pano de fundo permanente ao processo reflexivo e interagem com as práticas do PCIU!, em uma pesquisa coesa que une teoria e prática e se consolida em um trabalho artístico de performance musical. / This work is structured from three different and concomitant research fronts (whose methodological supports are discussed in the Introduction) and brings a diverse approach to the Children\'s and youth\'s choir conducting. It begins from a social survey with 52 conductors; in their responses to the questionnaire presented, they identify features, challenges and difficulties of social and technical order in the development of their groups and provide us data about the current context in which the choral activity is fulfilled. By analyzing these data, we elected three focuses of literature research, about the main issues raised by conductors: the Conducting itself, Vocal Technique and Music Education. Thus there were raised points of view of various authors regarding these items, which traditionally are part of the conductor\'s formation and consist the set of knowledge, skills and abilities of this professional. Then follows a discussion about structural elements and planning in choral singing, aiming to facilitate and organize the conductor\'s tasks, especially what regards to the processes of choral rehearsal and the processes of creation and recreation in choral music. The action research was accomplished from the PCIU! (Children and Youth Choir Project of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul), a children\'s and youth group created specifically for the purposes of this research, which permeates the whole discussion and summarizes the whole, accordingly it observes the development of the choir, and it analyzes the activities and technical choices present in rehearsals. The difficulties reported by fellow conductors participants of the research serve as a permanent backdrop to the reflective process and interact with the PCIU! practices, into a cohesive research that combines theory and practice and is consolidated into an artistic work of musical performance.

This document chronicles the history, development, process, and impact of three of the United States' first and most successful professional choirs. Representing the impact of these three choirs demonstrates a need for current professional or community choirs today. Four conductors of current professional and community choirs were interviewed and discussed elements for establishing, maintaining and succeeding in creating of a professional or community choir in the United States today. This document impresses the importance and considerations for a successful endeavor when establishing a professional or community choir.

The theoretical part of this MA thesis outlines the history of the Prague Philharmonic Children's Choir, its cooperation with Prague's leading stages, with outstanding Czech and international musical ensembles and conductors, as well as important concerts and appearances at prestigious festivals. It introduces the personalities who have held the position of choirmaster, and it surveys the choir's repertoire and discography. A short chapter is dedicated to the present situation of the choir and its present artistic guidance. The practical part comprises interviews with personalities who are, in various ways, linked with the Prague Philharmonic Children's Choir. A separate chapter is dedicated to a questionnaire which was given to members of the concert section of the choir and which covers the reasons and motivation for entering the choir and remaining there, the musical background in families etc.

The base theme of diploma thesis is the musical life with a focus on musical ensembles in Rychnov nad Kněžnou. At first the history of the town and its musical evolution is presented. In the next part of the thesis the active musical ensembles in Rychnov nad Kněžnou are discussed. They are for example the Rychnov Children's Choir of Carmina, Praus Choir and the X-tet and the Rychnov Temple Choir. There are also instrumental ensembles working at the ZUŠ of Rychnov nad Kněžnou: Sarabanda Flute ensemble, Orecchie grandi String Orchestra, Orecchie piccole String Orchestra, Nona Band, I flauti Matti Flute ensemble and Dance Orchestra ColorBand. The aim of the thesis is to map the culture of Rychnov in the field of artificial music.

The introductory chapter of this Thesis describes the development of choir music in Bohemia, starting with unison singing, through polyphonic singing, proceeding to forming of literary societies, and, finally, the form of choir singing as we know it today. In the theoretical part, we use the most important historic and social moments of the Prague Hlahol Choir to illustrate almost 155 years of its existence. The following chapter reflects the most significant concerts, introduces the choir's repertoire and how it changed through times, mentions premieres of choir masterpieces, cooperation with other significant choirs and prominent musicians. In the practical part, we reprint the interviews with long-time choir members and personal experience of some of the artists who have cooperated with the Prague Hlahol Choir. To complete this Thesis, we used anniversary almanacs, annual reports, historic documents and photographs, etc. We also included personal views of the choir members, choir leaders and the prominent musicians who have cooperated with the choir. Based on the assembled data, we can evaluate the progress the choir has made, the changes it has undergone and also the impact it has made from the day it was established. The purpose of this study was to explore adolescent self-views of singing ability through both implicit theories and self-concept meaning systems. A secondary purpose of this study was to examine these self-views specifically in the context of a choral hierarchy. Using a researcher-designed survey instrument, I gathered data from middle- and high-school students currently enrolled in a choir program organized in a hierarchical structure. I analyzed descriptive statistics of survey responses to items designed to measure implicit theories of singing ability, singing self-concept, and goal orientation. I also examined differences among participants by ensemble placement in implicit theory and self-concept scores, correlation between implicit theory and self-concept, and whether implicit theory, self-concept, goal orientation, or current enrollment could predict future enrollment decisions. In addition to these quantitative measures, I coded open-ended responses to two failure scenarios and examined participant responses by ensemble and gender. Both implicit theory and self-concept scores were higher for participants at the top of the choral hierarchy than at the bottom. Open-ended responses, however, did not align with the implicit theory scale and a number of students presented a false growth mindset. Open-ended responses also indicated that failure scenarios were likely to result in an altered view of the self and shame in placement in an ensemble at the bottom of the choral hierarchy. The means scores for participants in the middle- and high-school ensembles in both implicit theory and self-concept were significantly different, with participants in the high-school ensembles having higher scores in both constructs. Implicit theory and self-concept were significantly related, and self-concept, goal orientation, and current enrollment significantly predicted future enrollment decisions.

The most important 1920’s men’s choral composer, Erwin Lendvai, is used in this lecture as an example to demonstrate some compositional steps that were taken to save the genre. Contemporaries praised him as a bold innovator of men’s choir. His writing is highly professional and his experience as a conductor shows in every detail. Stylistically, his music is a mixture of chromatically altered extended tonality and polyphonic principles found in the kind of boyish and unmannerly Renaissance songs Lendvai was familiar with, due to his transcriptions in the style of the “Jugenmusikbewegung”. He connects two ultra-modern tendencies of the time, namely linear counterpoint (no longer exactly in the sense of Ernst Kurth) and a morbid post-wagnerianism, both en vogue and equally fascinating.
