The effect of five monoculture treatments on the nitrogen status of a brown clay soil from Narayen, South east Queensland

Leksono, Dwi Pudjo Unknown Date (has links)
The effect of continuous monoculture of sorghum, mungbean, oats, greenpanic and luceren on the nitrogen status of a brown clay soil from Narayen, South East Queensland was studied using biological and chemical methods. the soil nitrogen status was estimated by using indices of nitrogen availability i.e. waterlogged incubation method as the biological method and 2 M KCL, phosphate-borate buffer and 0.01 M CaCl_2 as rapid chemical methods. Total soil nitrogen and organic carbon were also included as estimates of soil nitrogen status. The results obtained by the waterlogged (WL) method were used to evaluate the results obtained by the three rapid chemical methods. The results show that of the three rapid chemical methods 2 M KCL was the most closely correlated with the waterlogged incubation method. Total N and organic C were also highly correlated with the WL method and they may have value as indices of nitrogen availability. The available N, total N and organic C contents in the 0-5 cm and 5-15cm layer soils were consistently higher under greenpanic and lucerne than for the annual crop treatments. The available N contents as determined by the WL method in the 0-5 cm and 5-15 cm soil layers under greenpanic and lucerne ranged from 75.6 to 126.5 ug N/g soil and 53.2 to 106.7 ug N/g soil, respectively, whereas the values under the annual crop treatments ranged from 13.2 to 75.3 ug N/g soil and 25.6 to 66.1 ug N/g soil, respectively. The total N contents in the 0-5 cm and 5-15 cm layer soils under the greenpanic and lucerne ranged from 0.29 to 0.38 % and 0.20 to 0.33 %, respectively, whereas the values under the annual crop treatments ranged from 0.17 to 0.31 % and 0.17 to 0.25 %, respectively. The availability of the total N as indicated by the available N as a percentage of the total N in the 0-5 cm and 5-15 cm layer soils under the greenpanic and lucerne ranged from 2.6 to 4.0 % and 2.1 to 3.2 %, respectively, whereas the values under the annual crop treatments ranged from 0.8 to 3.8 % and 1.5 to 2.4 %, respectively. In addition the organic C contents in the 0.5 cm and 5-15 cm layer soils under the greenpanic and lucerne range from 2.4 to 4.0 % and 2.0 to 3.5 %, respectively, whereas the values under the annual crop treatments ranged from 1.4 to 3.3 % and 1.7 to 2.7 %, respectively.

Arsenic (V) and Phosphate sorption to Swedish clay soils - Freundlich sorption modelling.

Mwamila, Luhuvilo January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to analyze and interpret the behavior of the two elements arsenic and phosphorus when released into the environment. Both of them may occur naturally in the environment but also may be added to the environment for certain purposes e.g. as pesticides and fertilizers respectively or through anthropogenic sources. When in excess, arsenic can be toxic to plants and organisms in the soil and some of it when leaches to groundwater or transported to surface water bodies through runoffs may pose a threat to aquatic organisms. Likewise, phosphorus when in excess result into eutrophication of surface water bodies and groundwater as well which has been a major problem in the Baltic Sea. In order to be able to predict their mobility a study on their chemical and physical characteristics under different conditions is important. The soil composition is an important aspect of nutrient management because some of the minerals present i.e. hydr(oxides) of aluminium and iron tend to hold and store both arsenic and phosphorus in the soil, while plant uptake and harvest may remove them (especially phosphorus) from the soil. This study was focused on Swedish agricultural soils and the samples for investigation were collected from two locations, one is Broknäs from which samples were collected from different horizons i.e. A 0-30 cm, C 60-90 cm and C 47-67 cm samples from an area known as Bogesundslandet, NE of Stockholm (59°24’N, 18°18’E) and E21:2 was collected from the county of Östergötland (58°27’N,14°57’E), southern Sweden not far from Lake Vättern, from where the A horizon was collected. Batch experiments were performed to check pH and concentration dependence of the sorption/desorption of As and P. Two varieties of the Freundlich equation (Basic and Competitive) were used to model the results obtained. It was observed that the dependence of arsenate and phosphate sorption/desorption on pH show a similar but not identical trend for both anions. At low pH, the dependence of dissolved P and As did not agree, for unknown reasons. Possibly, the low pH value may mobilize otherwise un-reactive P that at higher pH are blocked by some aluminium/iron precipitate. The Freundlich modeling results showed that there is direct competitive adsorption between As and P ions, at least in the A horizon. However use of the competitive Freundlich equation did not result in meaningful results in the C horizon, which may indicate different As and P sorption mechanisms. However, further studies on this are recommended.

Estudio experimental del efecto en el comportamiento mecánico al adicionar caucho triturado en un suelo arcilloso de baja plasticidad proveniente del caserío de Callampampa - Llama–Cajamarca / Experimental study of the effect on mechanical behavior by adding recycled rubber in a clay soil of low plasticity in the Caserío Callampampa - Llama - Cajamarca

Alvarez Benites, Nicols Cristina, Gutierrez Gallegos, Julio Alvaro 10 July 2020 (has links)
The present investigation presents the influence on the mechanical behavior of a soil from the Caserio de Callampampa, Llama, Cajamarca by adding powder rubber. This soil is low plasticity clay and its physical parameters were determined with the tests, such as Granulometric Analysis by means of the Hydrometer (MTC E 109-2016) and by Screening (MTC E 107-2016, NTP 339.128) and the determination of the Limit Liquid, Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index (NTP 339.129). The Modified Proctor (NTP 339.141) and Shear Box (NTP 339.171) test was performed as part of the methodology in order to know the mechanical parameters of the samples and explain the influence caused by the crushed rubber in the shear strength, cohesion, friction angle, etc. The samples tested were that of natural soil (S100) and mixtures with the addition of crushed rubber at 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5%. The results obtained indicate that the maximum dry density offered by the S100 / C3.5 mixture is increased by 1.76% with respect to the S100 sample and the optimum moisture content decreases by 5.75%. Likewise, the resistance to shear stress offered by the S100 / C3.5 mixture is increased by 35.2% compared to the S100 sample, cohesion increases by 64% and the friction angle decreases by 9.1%. On the other hand, for the CBR test the results obtained in the Modified Proctor tests will be required to find the parameters of the soil at the shear strength and see the viability as a terrain for a subgrade. The percentages were 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% whose results are compared with respect to natural soil. The results obtained from the 2 mm CBR of penetration with 95% of M.D.S was for an S100 of 3.3% and with the mixture of S100 / C3.5 it was increased to 9.4%. In conclusion, the clay floor of low plasticity improves its mechanical properties when crushed rubber is added. / Tesis

Kalcio jonų įtaka kadmio jonų adsorbcijos-desorbcijos procesams skirtingos granuliometrinės sudėties dirvožemiuose / The influence of calcium ions on cadmium adsorbtion-desorbtion processes in the soils of various texture

Muraškaitė, Vaiva 06 June 2005 (has links)
In this master work the influence of calcium ions on the cadmium mobility in the sandy and clay soils was investigated. Work subject - samples of Orthieutric Fluvisol and Calcaric-Endohypogleyic Luvisol topsoils taken from arable lands in Balbieriskis distirict. Work objective - to investigate the influence of calcium ions on the cadmium adsorption-desorption processes in the model systems of different kind of soil-Cd(NO3)2-Ca(NO3)2 simulating pH, Cd2+ and Ca2+ amounts. Work methods - the investigated soil samples were agitated for 1 hour with Cd(NO3)2 and Ca(NO3)2 solutions of various concentrations. The solutions were made in the 0.03M NaNO3 for the constant ionic strength maintaining. The Cd amounts in the equilibrium solution after the adsorption were determined with atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). The Cd desorption was investigated in the samples after adsorption using 0.05M NH4-EDTA (pH 7) solution as extractant. The Cd amount in extract was determined with AAS. Work results - results of the research showed that in the clay soil were accumulated more mobile Cd ions under the influence of Ca ions than in the sandy soil. The clay soil adsorbed for 25 % less and desorbed for 77 % more mobile Cd ions than sandy soil. When soil contamination with Cd was increased from 8 till 40 mg/kg, the Cd adsorption increased about 17 % in both alkaline (pH 8) and acidic (pH 4) medium, while in the sandy soil it decreased about 7 % at pH 8 and increased about 3 % at pH 4. Atenuação de cargas dinâmicas em linhas de ancoragem de plataformas offshore / Attenuation of dynamics loads in mooring lines of offshore plataforms

Sampa, Naloan Coutinho January 2015 (has links)
The increasing use of floating platforms for oil exploration activity has required development of studies related to new techniques and methodologies for foundation design in the marine environment. This research is the continuation of the work of Rocha (2014) and aims: to study the attenuation of dynamic loads in buried mooring lines through experiments in reduced scale models in clay deposits. The tests were performed in the laboratory from a system of dynamic loading that is able to produce vibration within desirable ranges of acceleration and frequency. The concepts of dynamic loading, rheology and thixotropy are discussed in order of evaluating the properties of the clay. Tests were conducted on clay soils with moisture content of about 120% obtained from laboratory mixtures of kaolin (85% dry matter), bentonite (15% dry matter) and water, in order to obtain a clay soil with geotechnical properties similar to those of offshore fields prospected by Petrobras. The mini vane tests and water content of specimens showed that the values undrained shear strength increase with increasing depth, while the moisture content decreases. In carrying out static and dynamic loading tests performed on reference angles ranging from 0° to 55° two cell loads were used to measure the forces applied at the touch down point and at the anchor point. The results obtained in these tests showed load attenuation due to the reaction forces (friction) generated by the soil along the soil-stream interface, when the mass of the surrounding soil is subjected to large deformations. It was observed that the magnitude of the static attenuation varies from 12.9 to 18.3%, the variation being a function of depth of cutting mounting (anchoring line length), reference angle, undrained shear strength of the clay and level of pre-applied tensile force, while the dynamic loading tests were found to give normalized attenuation values of dynamic loads in the range of 24 to 26%. Under dynamic loading, attenuation is slightly influenced by variation of tensile force and frequency of vibration due the viscous efects of the clay.

Kaolinitic clay soil of Amazon region was treated and modified,in order to obtain new materials for removal of contaminants from aqueous phase. The modification was performed by two methods: thermal treatment in presence of sugar cane fiber and modification with surfactants; using the new materials in adsorption of Methylene Blue (AM), used as spectrophotometric probe. The clay soil was treated with acid attack, cation change and after calcination at 400 0C with and without sugar cane fiber, and at 800 0C. All material was characterized by X-ray Diffraction, Infrared spectrophotometry and thermal analysis. Adsorption of AM was proceed in presence of cationic (Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide) and anionic (Sodium Dodecyl Sufate) surfactants. Samples of clay soil without calcination presents only kaolinite and quartz as compounds with cristallinity. Clay soil calcined at 400 0C with fiber and 800 0C were dehydroxyled, causing a phase change form kaolinite to metakaolin; when the kaolinite structure was maintained in clay soil calcined at 400 0C without fiber. In thermal analysis, the energy released by the fiber is sufficient to cause the phase change of kaolinite at lower temperatures relative to the same without fiber, promoting the process of dehydroxylation of the material in softer environmental conditions. The variation in time of calcination studies and ratio fiber:clay evidence that both influence the dehydroxylation and rates fiber:clay larger than 1:2 and the time of three hours are the best conditions for formation of metakaolin. Adsorption isotherms of AM exhibit changes in isotherms format, clay soil calcined at 400 0C without fiber and clay soil without calcination shows L-type isotherms and best correlation with Freundlich model, typical for favourable multiple layered adsorption; when the materials calcined at 400 0C with fiber and 800 0C shows C-type and correlation with Langmuir isotherms, typical monolayered adsorption in materials with microporous surface. The study of adsorption in presence of surfactants indicated that interactions among cationic surfactant with claysoil and anionic surfactant with AM prejudicing the adsorption of AM and results in less dye remotion of aqueous phase.
