The service sector is of fundamental importance to the global economy, but the layout of organizations in this sector is typically not approached with the same intensity with which physical arrangement is discussed in industrial environments. The 'wicked' problem of employability development in HE degree programmes : experiences, understandings and peceptions of lecturers and studentsCui, Fengqiao (Vanessa) January 2014 (has links)
For more than a decade, universities around the world have been placed with great responsibility to develop their students’ employability for political, economic and social reasons. Though many policies, research and practices have tried to address the issues and challenges employability development in HE faces, to date it remains a ‘wicked’ problem for higher education. Through a close up research framework, this study explored and examined the experiences, understandings and perceptions of lecturers, and students from two English Post 92 degree programmes, in an educational discipline, regarding employability and employability development. In order to illuminate some of the critical issues, in an attempt to understand ‘why employability development is so problematic to higher education’, this study took a reflexive phenomenological approach to look at how lecturers and students make sense of employability and employability development, through their own experiences. As well as looking at the two groups separately, it also compared their perceptions and understandings to highlight any dissonances they have, which are crucial to the complex and ‘wicked’ problem of employability development in their programmes. As lecturers and students hold diverse perspectives on employability in HE that is often in conflict, it was expected that there would be no “one size fits all” solution. In addition, this study found that employability has certainly added complexities to higher education. Certainly, it has led the students and lecturers to have complex issues within their roles and identities, in relation to employability development in their programmes and in HE in general. As such, this study reflexively examined those issues, and concludes that although employability development in HE will remain complex and ‘wicked’, through reflexive research and practices, vital issues relating to lecturers’ and students’ roles and responsibilities can be illuminated and solved.

Apical root resorption is among the most commom and undesirable counterside effects of orthodontic treatment. Thus it has been extensively studied in order to be prevented or minimized. The present research aimed to radiographically determine and quantify root resorption on incisors after retraction of the anterior segment. The root resoption and it's relation to the root movement or incisors tipping were considered. Upper and lower incisors of 12 to 25 years old patients, both gender, orthodontically treated with fixed appliance and premolars extraction were evaluated in the present study. The measurement of root resorption was obtained by the differences between root length on periapical radiographs, before and after incisors retraction. Distortion of the radiographic image and incisors tipping change control were controled using the methodology proposed by Linge & Linge (1983). Pre and post incisor retraction lateral cephalometric radiographs were used to establish the relation between root resorption and the tipping of the incisors and vertical, horizontal and total movement of the root apex. Based on the obtained data it was concluded that there is significant root resorption during incisors retraction movement, varing from 1.51 mm to 2.37 mm, and it is not related to the movement of root apex or to the tipping change of these teeth through the bone.

Our research program runs through the musicality circuit in Galp?o29, which is located in the neighborhood of Ribeira, in Natal-RN. From this location we seek to draw a cartography of musicality spaces. In Natal?s night opened up spaces for action of collective organizers of parties, inviting young people to attend the events present at the festive agenda of Galp?o29. The festivities opened environments, and in their midst, invited the participants to the action. The notion of close, in our thesis, seeks to present the form of relationship between bodies with the environments present in our city. On those parties we could find young people pouring their desires in their own bodies, microphones, announced flyers of events, calls for consideration and participation of performances. We found DJs and bands who composed musical productions and spread it in the costumes, to act on stage. The public were faced with participants acting in the scene by creating their own closes. We questioned the creation of work spaces where momentary freedoms are realized, where the body drunk to music and moves of everyday overcodings of city?s life. The creation of festive plateaus make up micropolitical effects on the city?s scene, through the celebration of life and composition of musicality that are expressed in their minor effects. Then we draw a cartography of close, showing how the creation of spaces and performances take place in Natal?s scene between the flashes captured in the events and how the closes are dragged to other city environments.

Two peculiarities of the film The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer,1928) are explored in this essay: its unusual close-ups and its strongly expressivecharacter. We start from the idea that both characteristics are closely related andwe seek to clarify this relationship making use of Gilles Deleuze’s affection-image and Georges Didi-Huberman’s dialectical image. Up MagazineFried, Therese January 2007 (has links)

Stellar Multiplicity Meets Stellar Evolution and Metallicity: The APOGEE ViewBadenes, Carles, Mazzola, Christine, Thompson, Todd A., Covey, Kevin, Freeman, Peter E., Walker, Matthew G., Moe, Maxwell, Troup, Nicholas, Nidever, David, Prieto, Carlos Allende, Andrews, Brett, Barbá, Rodolfo H., Beers, Timothy C., Bovy, Jo, Carlberg, Joleen K., Lee, Nathan De, Johnson, Jennifer, Lewis, Hannah, Majewski, Steven R., Pinsonneault, Marc, Sobeck, Jennifer, Stassun, Keivan G., Stringfellow, Guy S., Zasowski, Gail 21 February 2018 (has links)
We use the multi-epoch radial velocities acquired by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey to perform a large-scale statistical study of stellar multiplicity for field stars in the Milky Way, spanning the evolutionary phases between the main sequence (MS) and the red clump. We show that the distribution of maximum radial velocity shifts (Delta RVmax) for APOGEE targets is a strong function of log g, with MS stars showing Delta RVmax as high as similar to 300 km s(-1), and steadily dropping down to similar to 30 km s(-1) for log g similar to 0, as stars climb up the red giant branch (RGB). Red clump stars show a distribution of Delta RVmax values comparable to that of stars at the tip of the RGB, implying they have similar multiplicity characteristics. The observed attrition of high Delta RVmax systems in the RGB is consistent with a lognormal period distribution in the MS and a multiplicity fraction of 0.35, which is truncated at an increasing period as stars become physically larger and undergo mass transfer after Roche Lobe overflow during H-shell burning. The Delta RVmax distributions also show that the multiplicity characteristics of field stars are metallicity-dependent, with metal-poor ([Fe/H] less than or similar to -0.5) stars having a multiplicity fraction a factor of 2-3 higher than metal-rich ([Fe/H] less than or similar to 0.0) stars. This has profound implications for the formation rates of interacting binaries observed by astronomical transient surveys and gravitational wave detectors, as well as the habitability of circumbinary planets.

Dynamical Formation of Close Binaries during the Pre-main-sequence PhaseMoe, Maxwell, Kratter, Kaitlin M. 09 February 2018 (has links)
Solar-type binaries with short orbital periods (P-close equivalent to 1-10. days; a less than or similar to 0.1. au) cannot form directly via fragmentation of molecular clouds or protostellar disks, yet their component masses are highly correlated, suggesting interaction during the pre-main-sequence (pre-MS) phase. Moreover, the close binary fraction of pre-MS stars is consistent with that of their MS counterparts in the field (F-close = 2.1%). Thus, we can infer that some migration mechanism operates during the early pre-MS phase (tau less than or similar to 5 Myr) that reshapes the primordial separation distribution. We test the feasibility of this hypothesis by carrying out a population synthesis calculation which accounts for two formation channels: Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations and dynamical instability in triple systems. Our models incorporate (1) more realistic initial conditions compared to previous studies, (2) octupole-level effects in the secular evolution, (3) tidal energy dissipation via weak-friction equilibrium tides at small eccentricities and via non-radial dynamical oscillations at large eccentricities, and (4) the larger tidal radius of a pre-MS primary. Given a 15% triple-star fraction, we simulate a close binary fraction from KL oscillations alone of F-close approximate to 0.4% after tau = 5. Myr, which increases to F-close 0.8% by tau = 5. Gyr. Dynamical ejections and disruptions of unstable coplanar triples in the disk produce solitary binaries with slightly longer periods P approximate to 10-100. days. The remaining approximate to 60% of close binaries with outer tertiaries, particularly those in compact coplanar configurations with log P-out (days) approximate to 2-5 (a(out) < 50 au), can be explained only with substantial extra energy dissipation due to interactions with primordial gas.
