A Classification of Real Indecomposable Solvable Lie Algebras of Small Dimension with Codimension One Nilradicals

This thesis was concerned with classifying the real indecomposable solvable Lie algebras with codimension one nilradicals of dimensions two through seven. This thesis was organized into three chapters. In the first, we described the necessary concepts and definitions about Lie algebras as well as a few helpful theorems that are necessary to understand the project. We also reviewed many concepts from linear algebra that are essential to the research. The second chapter was occupied with a description of how we went about classifying the Lie algebras. In particular, it outlined the basic premise of the classification: that we can use the automorphisms of the nilradical of the Lie algebra to find a basis with the simplest structure equations possible. In addition, it outlined a few other methods that also helped find this basis. Finally, this chapter included a discussion of the canonical forms of certain types of matrices that arose in the project. The third chapter presented a sample of the classification of the seven-dimensional Lie algebras. In it, we proceeded step-by-step through the classification of the Lie algebras whose nilradical was one of four specifically chosen because they were representative of the different types that arose during the project. In the appendices, we presented our results in a list of the multiplication tables of the isomorphism classes found.

Um problema central em teoria de subvariedades é estudar imersões isométricas f : Mn → Qn+kc de uma variedade Riemanniana completa em uma forma espacial sob a ação de um subgrupo conexo e fechado do grupo de isometrias Iso(M). Esse estudo teve início com o relevante trabalho de Kobayashi (KOBAYASHI, 1958), que provou que se Mn é uma hipersuperfície compacta e homogênea no espaço Euclidiano, então Mn é isométrica à esfera usual. Neste trabalho estudamos imersões isométricas em formas espaciais com codimensão igual a 2. Mais precisamente, obtemos uma classificação das imersões isométricas f : Mn → Qn+2c de uma variedade Riemanniana completa sob a ação de cohomogeneidade 1 de um subgrupo fechado G ⊂ Iso(M), de modo que as órbitas principais são hipersuperfícies umbílicas de Mn. / An important problem in submanifold theory is to study isometric immersions f : Mn → Qn+kc into a space form of a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n acted on by a closed connected subgroup of its isometry group Iso(M). This study was initiated by Kobayashi (KOBAYASHI, 1958), who proved that if Mn is a compact and homogeneous hypersurface into Euclidean space, then Mn must be a round sphere. In this work we study isometric immersions into a space form with codimension 2. More precisely, we give a complete classification of isometric immersions f : Mn → Qn+2c of complete Riemannian manifold into a space form acted on by a closed connected subgroup G &sub: Iso(M) of cohomogeneity one, under the assumption that all principal orbits are umbilical hypersurfaces of Mn.

We show that if M is a compact and connected manifold, of dimension n, and is an immersion (formula) regular, that is, when the first normal space N generated by image of the second fundamental form has constant dimension 1, then we can reduce the codimension of the immersion to 1. Other result important in the work show that if M is complete, connected with non-negative Ricci curvature, then f is a cylinder over a curve our we can reduce the codimension to 1 and f(M) is the boundary of a convex set in an a±ne subspace of (formula). / Este trabalho tem como finalidade apresentar uma exposição clara e detalhada de dois dos teoremas apresentados no artigo de Lúcio Rodriguez e Renato Tribuzy sobre Redução de Codimensão de Imersões Regulares em Espaços de Curvatura Constante c. Mostra-se que se tivermos uma variedade compacta e conexa M, de dimensão n, e uma imersão (formula) regular, isto é, quando a dimensão do primeiro espaço normal N gerado pelas imagens da segunda forma fundamental tem dimensão constante igual a 1, então podemos reduzir a codimensão da imersão para 1. Outro resultado importante neste trabalho é o fato de que se a variedade é apenas completa, conexa e com curvatura de Ricci não-negativa, então a imersão será um cilindro sobre uma curva, do contrário, podemos reduzir a codimensão para 1 e nossa imersão será o bordo de um corpo convexo em um subespaço (formula).

[pt] Nicolau Saldanha no seu artigo Stability of compact actions of R(n) of codimension one de 1994 considerou uma ação do grupo R(n) sobre uma variedade de dimension n+1 a qual é gerada por n campos de vetores X1,....,Xn com a propriedade de que todas as suas órbitas são compactas (ação compacta). Aqui ele definiu dois tipos de estabilidade para uma folha: estabilidade local e total, os quais são equivalentes. Em um outro trabalho, Tânia Begazo e N. Saldanha tomando uma ação do grupo de Heinsenberg sobre uma variedade de dimensão 4 concluiram que estas classes de estabilidade não eram mais equivalentes. Agora, neste trabalho tentaremos encontrar condições de estabilidade de uma folha em sua forma mais geral (ie. As folhas da ação perturbada continuam compactas) para uma ação de codimensão 2, usando para isso um exemplo muito conveniente. / [en] N. La Partie I présente l’obtention du développement asymptotique topologique pour une classe d’équations elliptiques quasilinéaires. Un point central réside dans la possibilité de définir la variation de l’état direct à l’échelle 1 dans R^N. Après avoir défini un cadre fonctionnel approprié faisant intervenir les normes L^p et L^2, et avoir justifié la classe d’équations considérée, la méthode se poursuit par l’étude du comportement asymptotique de la solution du problème d’interface non linéaire dans R^N et par une mise en dualité appropriée des états direct et adjoint aux différentes étapes d’approximation.La Partie II traite d’estimations et de développements asymptotiques de p-capacités de condensateurs, dont l’obstacle est d’intérieur vide et de codimension > ou = 2. Après les résultats préliminaires, les condensateurs équidistants permettent de donner deux illustrations de l’anisotropie engendrée par un segment dans l’équation de p-Laplace, puis d’établir une minoration de la p-capacité N-dimensionnelle d’un segment, qui fait intervenir les p-capacités d’un point, respectivement en dimensions N et (N-1). Les condensateurs elliptiques permettent d’établir que le gradient topologique de la 2-capacité n’est pas un outil approprié pour distinguer les courbes des obstacles d’intérieur non vide en 2D / Part I deals with obtaining topological asymptotic expansions for a class of quasilinear elliptic equations. A key point lies in the ability to define the variation of the direct state at scale 1 in R^N. After setting up an appropriate functional framework involving both the L^p and the L^2 norms, and then justifying the chosen class of equations, the approach goes on with the study of the asymptotic behavior of the solution of the nonlinear interface problem in R^N and by setting up an adequate duality scheme between the direct and adjoint states at each step of approximation. Part II deals with estimates and asymptotic expansions of condenser p-capacities and focuses on obstacles with empty interiors and with codimensions > ou = 2. After preliminary results, equidistant condensers are introduced to point out the anisotropy caused by a segment in the p-Laplace equation, and to provide a lower bound to the N-dimensional condenser p-capacity of a segment, by means of the N-dimensional and of the (N-1)-dimensional condenser p-capacities of apoint. Introducing elliptical condensers, it turns out that the topological gradient of the 2-capacity is not an appropriate tool to separate curves and obstacles with nonempty interior in 2D

Estudamos inicialmente resultados de classificação de difeomorfismos de produtos de esferas de mesma dimensão. Tratado isto, estudamos os mergulhos suaves de produtos de três esferas, sendo a primeira de dimensão um e as demais de dimensão maior ou igual a um, com a dimensão da última maior ou igual a da segunda, em uma esfera em codimensão um, e buscamos a total caracterização do fecho das duas componentes conexas do complementar de tais mergulhos. Tratamos com enfoque especial os mergulhos do produto de três esferas de dimensão um na esfera de dimensão quatro, e, finalmente, estudamos problemas de classificação de mergulhos PL localmente não-enodados de somas conexas de toros em codimensão um. / We study initially results of classification of difeomorfisms of Cartesian products of spheres of same dimension. Treated this, we study the smooth embeddings of cartesian products of three spheres, being the first one of dimension one and excessively of bigger or equal dimension to one, with the dimension of the last equal greater or of second, in a sphere in codimension one, and search the total characterization of the latch of the two connected components of complementing of such embeddings. We deal with special approach the embeddings of the product to three spheres to dimension one in the sphere dimension four, and, finally, we study problems of classification of PL locally unknotted embeddings of connected sums of torus on codimension one.
