Coeur d'Alene, also known as Snchitsu'umshtsn, is a Southern Interior Salishan language no longer learned by children. Descriptive work on the language has been carried out since the early nineteenth-century (Tiet 1904 through 1909 in Boaz and Tiet 1930; Reichard 1927-29, 1938, 1939; Doak 1997); however, a formal account of the basic clause structure of this polysynthetic language has until now not been proposed. This thesis presents such a formal analysis within the Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001a, 2001b; Lasnik 1999a, 1999b, 2000; among others), employing the tenets of Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz 1993; Harley and Noyer 1999; among others). Demonstrating that an analysis of person marking morphemes as bound pronouns (Jelinek 1984) is more "economical" in terms of Chomsky's (1995:367)Elementary Principles of Economy, the thesis goes on to account for the phenomena of lexical affixation (Carlson 1990; Kinkade 1998; Gerdts 2003; among others), in Coeur d'Alene as incorporation. Appealing to Hale and Keyser's (2002) theory of conflation as Head-movement (Harley 2004), an approach to incorporation is proposed which captures Chomsky's (1995) claim that head-movement is phonological while at the same time illustrating that lexical affixes in Coeur d'Alene serve as incorporated arguments. The thesis concludes with an articulation of the left periphery (material above vP here), based on the strict ordering of a series of mood, adverbial, model, and aspectual particles. It is shown that this articulation in Coeur d'Alene patterns with Cinque's (1999) proposed universal hierarchy of functional and adverbial heads. In this way, the basic clause structure of Coeur d'Alene is formally presented

The purpose of this thesis has been to define translation and to briefly consider the difficulties involved in literary translation, more specifically dealing with translation from French to English. It has also been its purpose to establish certain guidelines of translation and to exhibit both these principles and the author's skill in a translation exercise. The work selected for translation was the author's translation and those of three other demonstrate that different authors may use various translate the same story, and the end result will be similar in content and effect, although different in style.

Contrairement aux mammifères, le poisson zèbre a la capacité de régénérer son coeur après une blessure importante. Une meilleure compréhension de ce phénomène pourrait contribuer à la conception de thérapies cliniques pour améliorer la régénération cardiaque des mammifères. Dans cette étude, nous avons identifié des voies de signalisation de la régénération cardiaque du poisson zèbre utilisant un criblage génétique chimique. De plus, nous avons identifier la présence d'un facteur de transcription bHLH, TAL1 et nous avons montrer son importance au cours de la régénération cardiaque du poisson zèbre. Enfin, nous avons examiner le rôle du système immunitaire lors de la régénération cardiaque du poisson zèbre et nous avons montrer que la sécrétion des metalloprotéinases (MMP14) par les macrophages permettait la dissolution du caillot sanguin, processus nécessaire pour la réussite de la régénération cardiaque. / Unlike mammals, zebrafish have the ability to regenerate their heart after substantial injury. A deeper understanding of this phenomenon could aid in the design of clinical therapies to enhance mammalian cardiac regeneration. In this study, we have identified signaling pathways in zebrafish heart regeneration using a chemical genetic screen. Furthermore, we identify the presence of a bHLH transcription factor, Tal1 and show its requirement during zebrafish cardiac regeneration. Finally, we examine the role of the immune system during zebrafish heart regeneration and demonstrate a model of scar removal by MMP14 positive macrophages and show that this process is required for successful heart regeneration to occur.

L’élément mariner Mos1 est un élément transposable de classe II qui code une transposase, l’enzyme permettant aux transposons de se déplacer dans les génomes. Cette transposase possède un coeur catalytique DDE similaire à celui des intégrases rétrovirales. Mon travail de thèse a consisté en l’étude de la transposase de Mos1, sous différents aspects. Mes résultats complètent le modèle de transposition précédemment établi au laboratoire et apportent une nouvelle vision de la formation du complexe synaptique qui permet l’excision de transposon du site donneur. Mes travaux ont également permis d’identifier le domaine de liaison à l’ADN de la transposase comme un domaine de type CRO. L’étude de la régulation de l’activité de la transposase, qui est phosphorylée, m’a permis d’élargir le modèle de transposition de Mos1 au contexte cellulaire eucaryote, et des études d’ingénierie de la protéine posent la question de l’impact des facteurs d’hôtes lors de la transposition de Mos1. Enfin, des inhibiteurs de la transposase de Mos1 ont été identifiés et leur mode d’action caractérisé. Ces composés présentent également une activité sur l’intégrase du VIH-1 et une autre transposase à cœur catalytique DDE. / The Mos1 mariner element is a Class II transposable element, encoding a transposase, which is the enzyme allowing them to move in the genomes. This transposase has a DDE catalytic core like the retroviral integrases. My work consisted in studying the Mos1 transposase, under different aspects. My results complete the model of transposition previously established in the laboratory and bring a new vision of the formation of synaptic complex, which allows excision of the transposon donor site. The DNA-binding of Mos1 transposase has also been identified as a CRO-like domain. Work on regulation of the activity of Mos1 transposase, which is phosphorylated, allowed me to expand the model of Mos1 transposition in a eukaryotic cell context. The engineering of the protein were also conducted and questions about the impact of host factors on Mos1 transposition. Inhibitors of Mos1 transposase have been identified and characterized. These compounds also inhibit HIV-1 integrase and an other DDE transposase.
