Advisements on collaborative software development for learning on mobile platforms.

Martinazzo, Alexandre Antonino Gonçalves 27 June 2011 (has links)
The application of mobile electronic devices in Education has been increasing since the last decade. Supporting collaborative development:cognitive challenges and solutions of developing embedded systems

Hyysalo, J. (Jarkko) 02 December 2014 (has links)
Abstract The development of embedded systems is becoming increasingly challenging; it is intellectually demanding knowledge work that requires collaboration among a wide range of skills. Software development is a largely cognitive activity, based on the worker’s internal mental processes rather than on physical labour. Developers face several individual and team cognition-related challenges in their work, including complex decision-making and problem-solving processes. Therefore, it is suggested that the software development process should be modelled as a set of problem-solving activities. This thesis proposes that supporting the cognitive work of collaborative development requires addressing the entire system’s life cycle with practical solutions. In this work, the above-mentioned challenges are addressed in terms of communication and collaboration practices, knowledge management and coordination, and transparent tools and processes. Moreover, these solutions are integrated into a workflow that structures and supports the development process. Finally, a development process is outlined that addresses the decision-oriented nature of software development in such a manner that the necessary data is provided for decision points that guide and coordinate the development efforts. A qualitative research approach has been chosen, and the work is based on interviewing industrial experts. Several cases were set up to define the state of the practice in industrial organisations developing embedded systems for different domains. Current challenges were identified and solutions were developed and validated in case companies. The main result of the dissertation is a set of solutions integrated into the organisational workflow to support collaborative development. The main principles are that the necessary information must be provided and work and its objectives must be justified and put into the correct context. The industrial cases indicate that utilising the suggested solutions can improve collaboration among organisations and teams by helping disseminate and use the required information. Mitigating the cognitive burden speeds up the development work and reduces the effort required from developers and decision makers. In this manner, organisations may achieve better results, primarily because the produced data and results will fulfil their purposes better and provide less waste. Tutkimus toteutettiin useassa eri teollisuuden organisaatiossa. Aluksi määritettiin lähtötilanne organisaatioissa sekä kirjallisuuden perusteella, kartoitettiin ongelmat, jonka jälkeen kehitettiin tärkeimmiksi havaittuihin ongelmiin ratkaisuja. Työn tuloksena esitetään joukko ratkaisuja, jotka yhdistetään organisaation työnkulkuun. Lisäksi esitellään päätöksentekoon painottuva kehitysprosessi, jonka lähtökohtana on havainto, että vaadittavien tehtävien sekä työn tulosten on vastattava oikeaan tarpeeseen – työlle ja halutuille työn tuloksille on annettava riittävät tiedot, perustelut, päämäärä sekä oikea konteksti. Tapaustutkimukset osoittavat, että työn tulokset parantavat organisaatioiden välistä yhteistyötä helpottamalla oikean tiedon keräämistä, saamista ja käyttöä. Lisäksi ylimääräisen kognitiivisen taakan vähentäminen nopeuttaa kehitystyötä ja keventää kehittäjien ja päätöksentekijöiden työkuormaa. Täten organisaatiot voivat saavuttaa parempia työn tuloksia lähinnä siksi, että tuotettu tieto ja tulokset vastaavat paremmin tarpeisiin.

Applying Cooperative Development in Exploring College English Teaching in a Large Class Format in China

Yang, Fan 01 January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Large class size as a growing phenomenon in developing countries is closely related to two reasons: initiatives to achieve universal education and rapid population growth (Bendow, Mizrachi, Oliver, & Said-Moshiro, 2007; Shehu & Tafida, 2016). Given the fact that the large class phenomenon cannot be eliminated within a reasonable amount of time, it is important for teachers to develop effective strategies to teach English in large classes (Hayes, 1997). The purpose of this study was to understand in what ways post-observation discussions lead to increased self-awareness by a College English teacher of her pedagogy, especially related to large class teaching, and to provide insights which might be useful to teachers who teach large classes in China and around the world. The research site for this study was a four-year college in northern China. Data were collected from document analysis, observations, and discussions to answer the research questions. The post-observation discussions were structured by using the theoretical frameworks of the Cooperative Development model and a “collaborative conversation” approach. From a series of data analysis, four themes were generated from the data which included student participation, affective factors, classroom management, and instructional strategies. This study also provided implications of the findings and recommendations for further research.

While unstructured merge tools try to automatically resolve part of the conflicts via textual similarity, semistructured tools try to go further by exploiting the syntactic structure of part of the artefacts involved. To understand the impact of the unstructured and semistructured merge approaches on integration effort (Productivity) and correctness of the merging process (Quality), we conduct two empirical studies. In the first one, aiming at increasing the existing body of evidence and assessing results for systems developed under an alternative version control paradigm, we replicate an experiment to compare the unstructured and semistructured approaches with respect to the number of conflicts reported by both merge approaches. We used both semistructured and unstructured merge in a sample 2.5 times bigger than the original study regarding the number of projects and 18 times bigger regarding the number of performed merges, and we compared the occurrence of conflicts. Similar to the original study, we observed that semistructured merge reduces the number of conflicts in 55% of the performed merges of the new sample. Besides that, the observed average conflict reduction of 62% in these merges is far superior than what has been observed before. We also bring new evidence that the use of semistructured merge can reduce the occurrence of conflicting merges by half. In order to verify the frequency of false positives and false negatives arising from the use of these merge approaches, we move forward and we conduct a second empirical study. We compare the unstructured and semistructured merge approaches by reproducing more than 30,000 merges from 50 projects, and collecting evidence about reported conflicts that do not represent interferences between development tasks (false positives), and interferences not reported as conflicts (false negatives). In particular, our assumption is that false positives amount to unnecessary integration effort because developers have to resolve conflicts that actually do not represent interferences. Besides that, false negatives amount to build issues or bugs, negatively impacting software quality and correctness of the merging process. By analyzing such critical factors we hope to guide developers on deciding which approach should be used in practice. Finally, our results show that semistructured merge eliminates a significant part of the false positives reported by unstructured merge, but brings false positives of its own. The overall number of false positives is reduced with semistructured merge, and we argue that the conflicts associated to its false positives are easier to resolve when comparing to the false positives reported by unstructured merge. We also observe that more interferences were missed by unstructured merge and reported by semistructured merge, but we argue that the semistructured merge ones are harder to detect and resolve than the other way around. Finally, our study suggests how a semistructured merge tool could be improved to eliminate the extra false positives and negatives it has in relation to unstructured merge.

Managing open innovation in process industries

Sjödin, David Rönnberg January 2010 (has links)
The concept of open innovation has received increased attention among practitioners as well as in academia in recent years. It provides a conceptual platform for understanding how external sources of knowledge drive internal growth. In addition, it also addresses the internal configurations needed for managing a more externally oriented innovation process. However, many firms still experience major managerial challenges in trying to adopt the principles of open innovation. The perhaps most important challenge in realizing the potential benefits of open innovation lies in modifying existing innovation activities and processes to incorporate the principles of open innovation, rather than creating something completely new. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to study the problems and opportunities arising when firms attempt to integrate open innovation activities within their development processes. Empirically, the results are based on three exploratory case studies within the process industries. In total, this thesis is based on 73 interviews from 2 process firms and 9 equipment suppliers to the process industries. Data was gathered in several different countries, and collectively these firms represent perspectives from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom.Three papers are appended with the thesis. Paper I studies the overall challenges of integrating open innovation activities within an existing product development process. The key contribution is the enactment of a practitioner-oriented work model, named the open Stage-Gate model, which exploits the advantages of "openness" while simultaneously capturing the benefits deriving from the systematic and structured approach implied by the Stage-Gate process. Paper II studies a concrete application of open innovation by focusing on the development and installation of new or upgraded process equipment in process plants where collaborative efforts by a process firm and various suppliers of process equipment often are required. The analysis focuses on problems and opportunities in different stages of the equipments lifecycle and finds that the content and the intensity of the collaboration should be tailored to the different stages of the equipment's lifecycle. As such, the conclusions highlight the fact that being totally open in development activities is not always the most suitable option. Instead, different degrees of "openness" may be suitable at different stages. Paper III studies collaboration in the later operational stages of a process equipments lifecycle, from an equipment supplier perspective. The results presented in this paper underscore the importance of collaboration in the operational stages as these stages are critical to facilitate technology transfer and production performance.

La conception collaborative avec les fournisseurs : proposition d'une méthode d'analyse par les dysfonctionnements / Measuring benefits of inter organisational collaborations and implementing necessary interface process

Personnier, Hélène 15 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis is focused on collaborative development of new products with suppliers. A method toanalyze failures linked to this type of development is proposed and enables to improve thispractice. This work is based on case studies carried out at Somfy Company, on interviews carriedout with 10 companies and on a quantitative study carried out with the University of Twente. From a literature review and our case studies, a list of failures is proposed followed by a failuresclassification in 5 classes following the customer/supplier collaboration lifecycle. Then, aquantitative impact analysis of the failures on the project performance via a survey is proposedto generalize the case studies’ results. The final result of this thesis is a risk analysis tool appliedto collaborative development with suppliers developed with Somfy and inspired by the FMEAapproach. This tool enables, at the beginning of a collaborative development project, to identifythe most critical potential failures in order to set up an adapted action plan.
