Developing Comic Book and Graphic Novel Collections in Libraries

This research study has several objectives. The first is to research graphic novels and comic books, their history and the issues this visual and literary medium has had with censorship, with preconceived notions that the medium is only meant for a juvenile audience, and with the development of rating standards. The second objective is to study current literature that has been written by scholars and librarians on this medium. This exploration of graphic novels and comic books and the scholarship and collection development efforts related to them provides a foundation for considering the issues and challenges which current and future librarians may have to face, in maintaining this literary form in library collections. The third objective is to conduct a focus group and to survey librarians in Tennessee from a range of backgrounds in order to consider a number of questions, including: if these librarians have encountered patrons who challenged having these books included in their institutions’ collections, what age range the surveyed librarians believe this medium is meant to appeal to, and how the librarians would rate content in comic books and graphic novels; such as, violence, language, sexual activity, etc.; including terms used by publishers in their rating standards to describe different levels of content. The results from this study showed there was quite a difference between what librarians feel is appropriate for the levels they were given and the types of content; with there being usually at least a 2 - 3 year age difference between the top two to three options chosen or there being a difference between the participants selecting an age range and selecting either “All Ages” or “None” as appropriate. The literature research and the data obtained from the survey along with the responses received from the focus group indicate that, since the majority of participants stated they “sometimes” experienced selection difficulties and problems with cataloging and shelving these books, picking an appropriate age range for a comic book or graphic novel is very subjective and librarians and publishers are still a long way away from agreeing on the appropriateness of the content.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the periodical collections of public libraries in the Triangle region of North Carolina in terms of young adult titles. Research questions targeted how public librarians provide their young adult patrons with access to periodical collections, address acess to periodicals available through the Internet and develop periodical collections in response to research findings on young adult reading. Collections were evaluated in terms of collection policies, placement, reference to other collections, and content. While the research revealed that collections varied in terms of responses to several of the research concerns, the collections showed some consistency in terms of collection policy and response to research findings.

Evaluating and improving collection tree protocol in mobile wireless sensor network

There has been growing interest in the Mobile WSN applications where mobility is the fundamental characteristic of the sensor nodes. Mobility poses many challenges to the routing protocols used in such applications. In this thesis we evaluate the performance of Collection Tree Protocol as applied in mobile WSN scenarios. The simulation study shows CTP performs poorly in mobile scenario because of the frequent tree re-generation resulting from node movements. We compare Collection Tree Protocol with reactive ad hoc network routing protocols. The simulation results show that collection tree protocol performs better than reactive MANET protocols in terms of data delivery ratio and control overhead under low traffic rates. The end-to-end delay obtained in case of reactive protocols is also higher compared to that obtained when using CTP, which is due to their route discovery process. This thesis presents an improved data collection protocol Fixed Node Aided CTP based on the analysis of CTP. The protocol introduces the concept of fixed aided routing into CTP. It is shown that our enhanced CTP outperforms CTP in terms of data delivery ratio and control overhead chosen as performance metrics. / UOIT

Open stope hangingwall design based on general and detailed data collection in unfavourable hangingwall conditions

This thesis presents new methods to improve open stope hangingwall (HW) design based on knowledge gained from site visits, observations, and data collection at underground mines in Canada, Australia, and Kazakhstan. The data for analysis was collected during 2 months of research at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Ltd. Callinan Mine in Flin Flon, Manitoba, a few trips to the Cameco Rabbit Lake mine in northern Saskatchewan, and 3 years of research and employment at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher mine near Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. Other sites visited, where substantial stope stability knowledge was accessed include the Inco Thompson mines in northern Manitoba; BHP Cannington mine, Xstrata Zinc Lead Mine, and Xstrata Copper Enterprise Mine, in Queensland, Australia; and the Kazzinc Maleevskiy Mine in north-eastern Kazakhstan. An improved understanding of stability and design of open stope HWs was developed based on: 1) Three years of data collection from various rock masses and mining geometries to develop new sets of design lines for an existing HW stability assessment method; 2) The consideration of various scales of domains to examine HW rock mass behaviour and development of a new HW stability assessment method; 3) The investigation of the HW failure mechanism using analytical and numerical methods; 4) An examination of the effects of stress, undercutting, faulting, and time on stope HW stability through the presentation of observations and case histories; and 5) Innovative stope design techniques to manage predicted stope HW instability. An observational approach was used for the formulation of the new stope design methodology. To improve mine performance by reducing and/or controlling the HW rock from diluting the ore with non-economic material, the individual stope design methodology included creating vertical HWs, leaving ore skins or chocks where appropriate, and rock mass management. The work contributed to a reduction in annual dilution from 14.4% (2003) to 6.3% (2005), an increase in zinc grade from 7.4% to 8.7%, and increasing production tonnes from 2.1 to 2.6 Mt (Capes et al., 2006).

This thesis describes the design of a RISC architecture for high speed data acquisition. The structure of existing data acquisition systems is first examined. An instruction set is created to allow the data acquisition system to serve a wide variety of applications. The architecture is designed to allow the execution of an instruction each clock cycle. Ovarian synchronization and superstimulation in wood bison (Bison bison athabascae)

For this thesis our objectives were to establish an efficient method of ovarian synchronization and superstimulation in bison, and determine the effects of gonadotropin treatments on oocyte collection efficiency and quality in bison. In the first study we conducted two experiments to develop an efficient protocol for synchronization of follicular wave emergence during the anovulatory season. In Experiment 1, we compared the synchronizing effect of follicular ablation (n = 9) and treatment with 2 mg estradiol (E-) 17β in oil (n = 10), while in Experiment 2, we compared follicular ablation (n = 9) and treatment with 2 mg E-17β + 100 mg progesterone (P4; n = 10). Results showed that the degree of synchrony did not differ between ablation and hormone treatment groups in either Experiment, but follicular wave emergence was more synchronous in both treatment groups compared to the untreated control phase. The second study was conducted to develop an efficient method for ovarian superstimulation and oocyte collection during the anovulatory and ovulatory seasons. During the anovulatory season, one experiment was conducted in two replicates to compare the superstimulatory effect of 2500 IU of eCG (n = 10) given intramuscularly vs two doses of 200 mg of pFSH each (n = 10) given subcutaneously. Additionally, the effect of 25 mg of pLH given 24 hours prior oocyte collection on oocyte quality and collection rate was evaluated for each superstimulatory treatment. Results showed that treatment with pFSH induced a higher superstimulatory response and more cumulus oocyte complexes (COC) collected than did eCG during the anovulatory season. Furthermore, treatment with pLH increased the proportion of expanded COC that were collected with ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration. Two experiments were conducted during the ovulatory season, to develop an efficient protocol for superstimulation and oocyte collection. In Experiment 1, we compared the effect of two intramuscular doses of 200 mg of pFSH in saline (n = 11) vs two intramuscular doses of 200 mg of pFSH in a proprietary slow release formulation (SRF; n = 11). In Experiment 2, we compared the effect of a single dose of 2500 IU eCG intramuscularly vs two doses of 200 mg of pFSH administered subcutaneously. Results showed that a 2-dose regime of pFSH, diluted in either saline or a slow-release formulation induced a similar superstimulatory ovarian response in wood bison, while bison given a single-dose of 2500 IU eCG had a significantly lower ovarian response. In summary, synchronization of follicle wave emergence can be effectively accomplished in wood bison during the anovulatory season and follicular ablation, E-17β and E-17β + P4 treatments all shortened, and decreased the variability in the interval to follicular wave emergence. In addition, oocyte collection by transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration from superstimulated bison was feasible and practical. Finally, treatment with pFSH was more effective than eCG to induce ovarian superstimulation for ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration in wood bison during both the anovulatory and ovulatory seasons.

La bande dessinée amphigourique chez l'éditeur belge Fréon : exploitation singulière d'un médium en transformation

Dès la fin des années 1980, de jeunes auteurs, désireux de s'affranchir du poids des contraintes de la bande dessinée classique, se sont regroupés afin de mettre sur pied de nouvelles structures éditoriales adaptées à leur ambition créatrice. C’est ainsi que fut créée en 1994, par un groupe d'auteurs belges, la structure éditoriale Fréon. Les œuvres qui y sont publiées, et particulièrement celles de leur collection Amphigouri, détonnent dans le paysage classique de la bande dessinée, révélant un projet éditorial singulier dont notre mémoire a voulu faire état. À partir d’un échantillon de quatre œuvres, nous avons tenté de cerner les caractéristiques qui singularisent ce projet éditorial et d’en évaluer les enjeux pour le domaine de la narration graphique contemporaine. L'analyse systématique des quatre ouvrages nous a permis de relever, tant aux niveaux technique, formel, narratif que thématique, les caractéristiques communes qui construisent l’identité de cette collection, l'exigence de la démarche qui l’anime. L’articulation de ces caractéristiques nous aura ainsi conduite à l’identification du «concept» du projet éditorial qui est l’assise de la collection. Nous en aurons conclu que les œuvres amphigouriques attestent d’une volonté éditoriale cohérente, précise et exigeante. Plus précisément, la collection Amphigouri revendique une utilisation résolument poétique des ressources du médium. Les principales caractéristiques de cette approche semblent être la création d’une nouvelle expression plastique, l’économie du scriptural, un investissement rigoureux de la contrainte modale, l'opacité et la polysémie du récit, la faculté de résister à une lecture immédiate, le choix d’exploiter les arts graphiques «traditionnels», mais également le souci d'une réflexion sur l’acte de narration. Notre démarche nous aura ainsi permis d’analyser une production par laquelle les ressources intrinsèques de la bande dessinée sont mises à profit: une production qui nous laisse entrevoir les nouvelles avenues que le genre mixte du 9e art est susceptible d’emprunter. ______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Fréon, Amphigouri, bande dessinée, narration graphique, modalités expressives.

Characterizing the Flax Core Collection for Earliness and Canopy Traits

Early maturity is an important objective for breeding flax adapted to the Western Canada. Crop canopy traits influence seed yield; however, studying its effects is challenging due to the complexity and limited knowledge of the genetics of this trait. The objectives of this research are : i) to characterize flax accessions from the Canadian gene bank collection for early flowering, maturity and canopy traits; ii) to identify SSR markers associated with plant branching and leaf area index (LAI); iii) to use Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to identify canopy variables with significant effects on yield. The flax core collection, consisting of approximately 381 accessions, was grown at the Kernen Crop Research Farm in 2010 and 2011. Additionally, 17 early and 17 late flowering accessions from the flax core collection were screened and their phenotypic responses in both growth chamber and field environments were measured. A large amount of phenotypic diversity was observed in long day and short day environments in these experiments. Some accessions appeared to be more photosensitive, while others were photoperiod insensitive. The genetic control of canopy traits such as LAI and plant branching were studied using association mapping. Genotyping of the core collection was conducted using 375 SSR markers. Population structure analysis assigned the 381 flax accessions in the core collection into four distinct groups. Model comparison revealed that the mixed linear model reduced spurious marker trait associations. A total of 26 markers were identified to be significantly associated with plant branching and LAI. The simultaneous examination of crop phenology and canopy traits to seed yield was performed using SEM analysis. The results indicated greater plant stand resulted in higher irradiance absorption and which resulted in greater seed yield. Days to flowering had a significant negative effect on seed yield and growing degree days to maturity had a significant effect on seed yield. Plant branching and plant height had a positive non-linear effect on seed yield. This study has provided several insights into molecular approaches and statistical methods to improve flax breeding.
